For Christian people, the new year begins with the First Sunday of Advent. This is not how the rest of the world marks time, but that’s ok. We mark time in Christ, not in Black Fridays, door busters and early bird specials. The presence of Christ in history is the key to the meaning of history in the first place. Over and against the chaotic rush that characterizes the weeks before Christmas, Advent is a season of waiting, stillness, reflection and hopeful expectation. These are all relatively quiet and peaceful experiences. They are the kind of experiences in which people of faith engage. They are the kind of experiences in which families of faith engage.

One of the traditions here at Queens which I have come to cherish is the advent wreath-making in the school cafeteria prior to the first Mass of Advent. Families gather to design and create the Advent wreaths that will be placed in their homes as gentle reminders of the holiness of the season. As each candle of the wreath is lit each Sunday, the gradually growing light of the wreath reflects the gradually increasing joy of the season. Now, for sure, the cafeteria was not all that quiet as the families were constructing their wreaths; but it was a joy to watch families simply being together and working together on a project that was not associated with getting and spending, getting more and spending more. When the wreaths are complete, the families come over to the Basilica proudly bearing their creations so that they can be blessed during the opening rite of the first Mass of the Advent season. As the wreaths are blessed, some families held hands, some stand closely together and one or two have to break their circle in pursuit of a sudden runaway child; but all seem to be pleased that the first lights of Christmas would come from their very own Advent wreaths in their very own homes. The blessing speaks of the gradually increasing light that would come from the candles as one more was lighted each week. That increasing light, of course, is Christ, the light of the world. My hope is that the families who participated in our annual Advent wreath-making party will gather together again on each succeeding Sunday of Advent, will light another candle and will say a simple prayer. That way they can first do something significant as a family and secondly recognize that Christ himself is an integral member of their family. And these occurrences often become lifelong memories for children, the kind of memories that can keep teenagers and young adults close to Christ and close to the Church for the length of their lives. Advent has a twofold character: it is the time of preparation for the birth of the Savior in which the First Coming of the Son of God is remembered as a helpless infant in a stable. And it is a time of preparation for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ at the end of time when he will come as the just judge of the world. God bless you, your family and your time together in preparation for Christmas. Monsignor John Pollard

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of QAS is continuing its annual Share Christmas with the poor this weekend! If a family wishes to do more or if someone wishing to participate does not get one of the names from the tree, they may bring in an unwrapped toy, items of clothing such as warm hats, gloves, scarves, socks, or a gift card to our collection the weekend of December 12th and 13th.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Share Christmas

The instructions for wrapping the tree gift items will be on the cards. Please attach the name cards securely to the front of the wrapped item. This is the only way we will know where and to whom the gift goes.

Remember also to leave your name and telephone number

on the card attached to the back of the name card.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society thanks our parishioners for their past generosity and for all your support in our efforts to help those in need.

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 2

Sunday is the Lord’s Day. Psalm 118 says of it, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Sunday is the day Jesus rose from the dead. For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts. Each week unfolds from Sunday and returns to it only to begin anew again. The Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life. Even for one week, who would want to be at a distance from the heart of the Church, the heart of Christ? The heart of Christ is the source of mercy, compassion and love. Who would want to deprive himself of that access even for a short time?

Religious Education News

As we begin the season of Advent, the Tuesday afternoon classes will gather for class on December 1st. During these weeks leading to Christmas, our students will continue to explore the ways that we can be “ambassadors of Mercy”. They will also experience the many ways Advent is celebrated both in our Church and homes. Be sure to ask your students how Advent can be a great time of preparing for the coming of Peace in our world. Pre School Family Mass On Saturday, December 5th, the parish will celebrate the annual Tree Lighting ceremony before the 5 PM Mass. The Pre- School children will lead us in the blessing of the crèche and lighting of the festival lights before the Mass, and will fulfill roles for reading, the bringing up of gifts, and greeters at this special evening Mass. Be sure to mark your calendars for this event.

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held on select Mondays at 7:30 PM in the Rectory and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
