November 29, 2015 ~ First Sunday of Advent

ADVENT 2015 I don’t know about you but I do not spend a lot of time waiting. Most of the time, I spend time trying to catch up with things that I have to do or an appointment that I have to be at. I don’t like the pace all the time because I know I need to slow down and enjoy the things that happen during the day. Sometimes things just happen that upset a planned schedule for the day. This happens to all of us. Our responsibilities towards our families or parishioners, sometimes redirects our intended plans and sets us on a new path. Advent is a season that is often characterized by the word “waiting”. Symbolically and scripturally our religious tradition speaks of the many centuries that the people of Israel waited for the coming of the promised Messiah. When Jesus came some did not accept his type of Messiahship and we left still waiting and wondering. For Christians in this final era we “await” the second coming of Jesus at the end of time as he promised. What is our “waiting time” to be characterized by? I do not believe many of us will just stop what we are doing and wait for the coming of the Lord. The early Thessalonian community thought they could. St. Paul wrote to them and said the time of the second coming is not up to us but it will happen in God’s time…so he told them to keep doing good things each day and not worry about the time when the Lord will come again. Be found waiting as good servants doing what God wants you to do was his advice to them. So how are we going to fit this “Advent waiting” into our schedule this year? Or should we even try to fit it in? I believe that we should not fit it in but try to live with the hopefulness that Advent brings into our lives. Instead of just waiting we should let the flow of the day – times of fast paced activity and quieter moments remind us that Jesus is already with us and directing our efforts. This Advent time can be for a time to make the effort to at least plan our day as an Advent Day that beings with quiet prayer before all else; that helps view our responsibilities towards others as opportunities to bring others Advent joy and hopefulness. We can do this because God is already among us and with us in everything we do. We just have to slow down and recognize this a little more this Advent season…Fr. Joe SERVING CHRIST IN OTHERS… Bishop’s Annual Appeal We need to think less about our own personal comforts and more about the pain of those who are suffering. We need to look into the face of the poor and see Christ there. Those in need are not a burden they are gifts given by God so we have opportunities to share and to serve. Please make a pledge to the 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift at www.2015appeal.org.

AN INFORMATIONAL SERIES: to Help Understand and Care for Our Parents and Ourselves as They/We Age St. Luke Church, Long Valley December 6, 2015 12:15 to 1:30 PM Taking the Next Steps: Understanding Palliative Care, Hospice, and Preparing for the End of Life Guest Speakers: Marie Peppas, Hospice Nurse January 24, 2016 12:15 TO 1:30 P.M. ---- Taking Care Financially & Legally: Using Foresight to Maximize Care & Financial Security Guest Speakers: Matt Farley, Financial Planner & Tim Duffy, Attorney WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC We are Catholic because we believe: Jesus himself affirms that God is “the one Lord” whom you must love “with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” At the same time Jesus gives us to understand that he himself is “the Lord.” To confess that Jesus is Lord is distinctive of Christian faith. This is not contrary to belief in the One God. Nor does believing in the Holy Spirit as “Lord and giver of life” introduce any division into the One God: We firmly believe and confess without reservation that there is only one true God, eternal, infinite (immensus) and unchangeable, incomprehensible, almighty, and ineffable, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; three persons indeed, but one essence, substance or nature entirely simple. The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph# 202 ADORATION AND BENEDICTION… Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held Monday, December 14th at OLM 7 – 8 p.m. This month the theme is “Mercy”.

PRAYERS OF REMEMBRANCE… In our Catholic faith tradition of praying for our deceased loved ones goes back to the beginnings of the Christian communities. In fact, this custom can be traced back to the Old Testament, where in 2 Maccabees 12:38-46, a Jewish leader by the name of Judas Maccabeus, asked his soldiers to pray for their kinsmen who had fallen in battle, for the forgiveness of their sins, and for God’s mercy on their souls. During the month of November we too pray for all the faithful who have preceded us in death, especially our loved ones whom we remember at each of our masses. BON VENTURE SERVICES CARD CONTEST… The printer of our bulletin is having a “Create A Birthday Card to Jesus” contest. Using an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper folded in half, design a special card to Jesus, wishing Him a Happy Birthday. Don’t forget to write a message inside the card! There will be 5 categories and they will select one winner from each category, Ages 3-5, Ages 6-8, Ages 9-11, Ages 12-14, Ages 15-17. You could win a $100 American Express Gift Check. All entries must be received by 5 pm, on Friday, December 4. Winners will be notified by mail. Forms are available in the Christian Ed. Office. BLESSING OF EXPECTANT PARENTS… We will offer a blessing for any expectant/adopting parents The weekend of December 19th & 20th at all the masses. Please feel free to invite members of your families or friends who might like to receive this blessing. During Advent we remember how Mary awaited the birth of her son. May the Lord bless the children who will soon be born into our families and our church community.

Page 6: November 28-29, 2015 · MONDAY November 30, 2015 9:30AM Paul Shernce Ochwat, K. Tell TUESDAY December 1, 2015 9:30AM George Aires 7:30PM Elsie Burdge WEDNESDAY December 2, 2015 9:30AM

1st Sunday of Advent, November 28-29: …in accordance with the scriptures…Down through history, God provided us with a roadmap. He foretold various signs and conditions through His prophets. These prophets spoke of things that mankind should watch for so that the Messiah would be recognized and believed. These signs or prophecies were given to us in the Old Testament written hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth. There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled through His life, death and resurrection. For example -The Messiah would be a descendant of King David …The Prophecy – Jeremiah 33:14-15 …“The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days, at that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land.” The Fulfillment Luke 1: 31-33 “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” About the prophecy… Jeremiah was a prophet in the southern kingdom, Judah, from 627-587 BC, a terribly turbulent time in the life of the Israelites. Jeremiah offered his fellow Israelites words of hope when everything they held dear seemed to be falling apart. The future will bring what is “right and just” in the land and it will come in the form of a “just shoot”, a descendant of David, who will establish peace and security. The prediction of an eternal Davidic dynasty to fulfill the prophecy of Nathan (2 Samuel 7:12, 14, 16 - the Davidic covenant), was not, however, to be realized in the restoration of the Jewish nation, but found its fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth.

FiRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Jeremiah 33: 14-16 The Lord tells of fulfilling the promise he had made to Israel. He will send a replacement for David, someone who "shall do what is right and just in the land," believed by most to mean Jesus.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2 Paul encourages the Thessalonians to be ready for the coming of the Lord. He explains that although they are conducting themselves in a way that would please God, they should always strive to do even better.
