St. Athanasius Parish, Reading, MA November 27, 2016
FROM THE PASTOR I think my Prayer of Thanksgiving this year would be, “Thank you, Lord, for such a fruitful and untroubled year for St. Athanasius Parish. Please grant us the same this year and into the future!” While it is a fact that we all keep several calendars in our mind (monthly, seasonal, school and youth activity, religious education), all of which determine how active our lives are at any given time, the First Week of Advent, nonetheless, marks the beginning of the Church’s Liturgical Year. In that sense, the Christmas Faire and Thanksgiving mark in a real way the end of one year for our parish and the beginning of another. How appropriate it is, then, to conclude the year with our grand event and then be able to give thanks for its success. In short, I just want to once again thank everybody involved in the Faire for your effort and to say that I am particularly grateful for how smoothly it went. This just made the atmosphere of the parish all that much more enjoyable and welcoming for those who visited us. On a grander scale, the past year as a whole for our parish had the same spirit, which only increases my gratitude to Our Lord and to all of you. We pray that this is a sign of continued blessing during this Holy Season!!

St. Athanasius Parish Outreach
We are expanding our outreach efforts so that we
may better assist those in our community who may
need a helping hand in a variety of ways. We are
looking for volunteers who would be willing to assist
in the following ways:
♦ Drive parishioners to church
♦ Prepare meals
♦ Visit parishioners who may be unable to attend
church
♦ Bake desserts for the Sawtelle Hospice House
Please let us know if you can provide any of these
important services. If you are already on the Hospice
House dessert list, you do not need to volunteer for
that effort again since we already have your contact
information. Please contact Ellen Terry at
[email protected] or 781-944-5431 to volunteer
for any of these programs. THANK YOU!

Looking for Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to help with the
bottles and cans drive on December 3rd from 8-
11am. Please call the office (781-944-0330) to
sign up. This would be a good time to get some
community service hours.
Adult volunteers are needed also.
There are lots and lots of bottles and cans and
therefore lots of work to do and we need as
many people as possible. Even if you can only
come for some of the time, any help is greatly
appreciated.
Worldwide Marriage Encounter
“Oh house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of
the Lord!” As we begin the anticipation of Advent,
let us walk together in the love of God by
participating in a Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Weekend. The next WWME Weekends are Dec 2-4,
2016 in Duxbury, MA and Jan 20-22, 2017 in
Duxbury, MA. For more information, call Stephen &
Michelle O'Leary at 800-710-9963 or visit us at
www.WWMEMA.org.
GIVING TREEGIVING TREEGIVING TREEGIVING TREE Please take a gift request from the bulletin board at the church entrance. The gifts benefit families receiving services from Catholic Charities. At the request of Catholic Charities, we are asking for more gift certificates than specific gift requests. Gift certificates allow more flexibility for the parents as well as giving them the pleasure of
shopping for gifts for their children. Unwrapped gifts should be returned to the church choir loft by December 11th. Gift cards may be left in the box in the entry way near the restroom. Donations of gift wrap are also appreciated so the parents can wrap the gifts for their children. Please call Ellen Terry at 781-944-5431 if you have any questions. Thank you!

Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed Mystic Valley Elder Services Meals on Wheels Drivers deliver healthy meals every weekday to elders and adults living with disabilities, many of whom are homebound. Our drivers provide a nutritious meal, but also a safety check and critical social contact. The few moments of kindness that our drivers provide make this service so much more than just a meal. Additional drivers are needed to meet the increased number of meal recipients. If you are interested in giving back to your community through this part-time job, please apply today. Call Eliana at 781-324-7705 ext. 598 or visit our website www.mves.org/joinus.

Become a Hospice Volunteer “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in
the service of others.” -Mahatma Gandhi
All Care Hospice is currently seeking caring,
compassionate people to offer comfort and support
to our patients and families. As part of the care
team, volunteers serve a vital role in affecting the
quality of our patients’ lives. Each volunteer
opportunity is unique and varies depending on the
needs of the patient and family as well as the
volunteer’s availability and interests. Patient care
may include providing companionship through
conversation, reading aloud, reminiscing, or even
just holding their hand. Other duties help alleviate
stress for the caregiver such as running errands like
grocery shopping and trips to the pharmacy, light
housekeeping or meal preparation. Administrative
tasks involve assembling admission packets, assisting
with mailings, photocopying, and special event
preparation. All Care Hospice serves the North Shore,
Merrimack Valley and Greater Boston.

Would You Like to
Become a Foster Parent?
The Department of Children and Families, DCF, is a
state agency charged with the responsibility of
protecting children from abuse and neglect. DCF’s
goal is to keep children at their home and to support
families so that everyone is safe and healthy.
When this is not possible, the Department works to
find an alternative permanent family for the child.
The DCF will provide you with ongoing support,
training, and financial help. Before you place the call
for more information, give a few moments of
thought to what is really involved. Understand that
you will be changing your life, but you will also be
changing the life of a child.
Our DCF Lowell office number is 978-275-6800.
