During the execution of a perfect strike, the ball only knocks down four pins. You see ten pins explode into the air, but the ball itself makes direct contact with only four of them. A domino ef-fect knocks down the other six pins. It doesn’t take a lot of power to make those four pins fall over, but it does require an extreme-ly well-placed shot to set up an effective chain reaction. Only proper technique results in accuracy that is consistent enough to produce strike after strike.

If bowling were a game of power, the sport would be domi-nated by former football players, body builders, and professional wrestlers. It isn’t. Professional bowlers come in all shapes and sizes! Two of the best professional bowlers who ever appeared on TV were Earl “the Pearl” Anthony and Nelson Burton, Jr. They were not muscle-bound behemoths. They were two of the smoothest bowlers you ever saw, and two of the greatest who ever lived. Both made a good living by regularly beating power bowlers, because they relied on nearly flawless technique.

You get the idea. There is a place for power in the game of bowling, but it is not fundamental to the development of cham-pionship caliber skills. As in any sport, there are both basic and advanced skills. The stance, pushaway, armswing, and release are the basic skills. Power is one of the advanced skills. Build your game on a solid foundation of the basics because without them, you will never be able to develop advanced skills. Without them, nothing else matters (even if you’re lucky).

About absolute truth number 2, what you do: The study of physics taught Lenny the principle of cause and effect. Applied to bowling, it means that where the ball goes and how it behaves depends entirely upon what you do to it. If you want your first shot to hit the pocket, then you need to develop techniques that enable you to send the ball into the pocket. It’s really that sim-ple.

Look at it this way. The approach is fifteen feet long. The lane, foul line to headpin, is sixty feet long. The length of the lane actually amplifies any error you make in your delivery by a factor of four! If you are one inch off at the foul line, the ball may end up as much as four inches off once it gets to the pins. This is why what you do must be repeatable, so that your results are predict-able. It is why learning a proper technique is so important, so that you do the right things, not the wrong things (which get magni-

Was Lenny just lucky, or did he know something that Mark didn’t? To be sure, he knew many things that Mark did not, the most important of which was how to think like a bowler!

He knew better than to complain about the lane conditions; they were the same for both teams. He understood that the game was really about reading those conditions and adjusting to them.

He knew to ignore Mark’s antics. Nothing his opponent ever did was important. He wasn’t bowling against Mark; he was bowling against the pins.

He knew that bowling was much more than just throwing a ball at the pins and hoping for the best. Bowling balls are deliv-ered, not thrown!

He knew to ignore the scores. They were a distraction. They never mattered until the game was over, and they were merely a reflection of how well he had adjusted his skills to suit the lanes. He knew that high scores didn’t happen just because he wished for them; he had to make them happen.

He knew to ignore the fact that this match was for the league championship and that as the cleanup bowler, his teammates were relying on him for the win.

He knew that in order to win, he had to give his team a chance to win. That meant nothing more than making good shots.

He knew that making good shots meant focusing on his tech-nique and nothing else!

Lenny knew technique.

Lenny first picked up a bowling ball at the age of twelve and immediately fell in love with the game despite being lousy at it (he scored 29). He had watched another bowler practicing on the lane beside him roll one strike after another and wondered how he did that. The other bowler made it look so easy. Learning to bowl like “that guy” became a passion for him.

The pursuit of this passion, to become as good as “that guy,” became a lifelong quest. He soon discovered that anyone who even owned a bowling ball had advice to offer about the game. Sadly, he also realized that in many cases the random bits of in-formation he gleaned from one source would conflict with what another source had said. His challenge evolved from learning all that he could about his sport to separating what really worked from what did not.

Now, at the age of fifty-three, he only bowled once a week but carried an extremely respectable 213 average. Yes, he definitely knew something Mark did not. He knew how to bowl. He knew what to focus on and what to ignore. He knew how to give his team a chance to win. Where Mark counted on natural athletic ability, constant practice, and emotion, Lenny relied on experi-ence, education, a thoughtful strategy, and discipline.

Over four decades of bowling had taught Lenny that the only thing that mattered on the approach was technique: repeatable skills that produced dead-on accuracy. To his own surprise, his years of studying the sport had resulted in the discovery of a set of principles that govern successful technique. He refers to them as “the absolute truths of bowling.”

An absolute truth is a concept that applies to everyone wheth-er small, medium, or large; young or old; male or female; right-handed, or left-handed. These truths are as follows:

Bowling is a game of skill, not power. What you do on the approach determines what the ball does

on the lane. The ball travels a line toward the pins.

Lenny’s father, a contractor, had taught him that “a strong house is built on a strong foundation.” When he decided to rebuild his game from scratch, these three principles became the founda-tion for that game. Using them as the basis for separating good advice from mindless drivel, he developed and choreographed a system of simple, well-defined fluid skills that he applied every time he stepped up onto the approach. These skills are:

The StanceThe PushawayThe armswingThe RElease.

This SPaRE system works for Lenny, but it will also work for any bowler. A closer look at Lenny’s system reveals why.

About absolute truth number 1, skill versus power: Many bowlers never achieve their true scoring potential because they rely on their strength to throw the ball as hard as possible. They think that more power will knock down more pins. That may sound logical, but it’s only partially true for a number of reasons. Here are just a few of them:

You want to deliver strikes because strings of strikes produce high scores. That means rolling a very heavy ball a very long way (sixty feet) into a very small pocket over and over again. That requires accuracy and precision. Power alone cannot accomplish this because muscles are unreliable. They react differently each time you use them. When they are cold, they respond one way; once warmed up, they act another way. They tighten up; they loosen up; they get tired and sore. You get the idea.

Trying to develop a power game without first learning the basic skills is like trying to learn to drive a race car without using the steering wheel. All the power in the world is worthless if you can’t make it behave! Whatever strength you have is enough; you must develop skills that direct your strength, not vice versa.

ChaPter 2the education of Lenny

fied). It prevents or, at the very least, reduces the variations in your delivery that destroy your scores and make you utter the inevitable curse, “These lanes suck!”

This principle holds the key not just to making you a better bowler but also to making you a better sportsman and person. How? By helping you learn to take responsibility for your-self. You see, it’s easy to make excuses for failure, something for which bowlers are famous. This absolute truth forces you to face the reality that if your ball misses the target, it’s be-cause you made it miss the target. Once you can admit that you made a mistake, it becomes a simple matter to figure out what it was. You can then eliminate that mistake by making an adjustment to your delivery. Learning to adjust is what makes you better.

About absolute truth num-ber 3, the ball travels a line: This statement is so simple and painfully obvious that you are probably wondering how it could possibly be of any importance to improving your game. To Lenny, it is the holy grail for which he spent decades searching.

What is good technique? This concept, the line, or more accurately the target line, pro-vides the key to answering that all-important question. When combined with the other ab-solute truths, it unlocks the se-cret to determining what is im-portant and what is not. It boils down to this: Good technique is repeatable, puts the ball on your target line, and keeps it there. Any advice that doesn’t follow this rule is garbage because it leads to unreliable techniques.

This line begins at your shoulder the moment you take

your stance and continues all the way down to the pins. It con-sists of two parts:

The path along which you carry the ball during your deliveryThe path the ball follows once you release it

Good technique forms these two parts into one line seamless-ly and effortlessly. Your improvement as a bowler (higher scores) relies on your:

Learning to visualize this line in your stance. To do this, you must first roll a practice shot. The track the ball follows estab-lishes a line. This line will be a function of the lane conditions. You need to visualize this line ending up in the pocket.

Practicing the skills as described, so that you get the ball on that line and keep it there throughout your delivery.

tiP This line provides the basis for another advanced skill: reading lane conditions. Once your line is established, only two things can change it: variation in your technique or in lane condi-tions. Properly maintained lanes are mechanically cleaned and then dressed with oil every day.

This creates the lane condition. Balls rolling on the lane move this oil around, changing that condition. If you eliminate devia-tions in your delivery, any change in your ball’s trajectory must relate to the lane condition. Reading these changes becomes much easier as you gain confidence in the consistency of your skills.

Forty years of bowling taught Lenny that his father had been right—you need to build on a solid foundation. By themselves, the stance, pushaway, armswing, and release are just things you do to throw a ball down a lane to produce random results.

These same four acts, developed into skills based upon three simple yet universal truths, became a delivery system. They be-came a series of finely tuned motions, knitted together, which enabled him to become one of the elite bowlers in every league in which he competed.

More important, these movements are so simple and well de-fined that he found he could teach them to anyone! There is only one thing Lenny likes more than bowling well: teaching other people how to bowl well. It takes him back to his first bowling experience. He had watched that other guy in awe and wondered How does he do that? Now he knows:

The Stance puts the ball on a line to the target, allowing . . .the Pushaway to move the ball along that line and set up . . .the armswing, which develops ball speed along that line, al-

lowing . . .the RElease to smoothly send the ball onto the lane without

altering its trajectory.

Are you beginning to understand how easy the game of bowl-ing can be? Competency at any level depends on the mastery of only four basic skills.

The real beauty of the SPaRE system is not its simplicity, but that it works so well. Virtually anybody can learn and master it.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione

MACMONAGLE TOPS DEAF TRAVEL WITH 779 AT GABLE HOUSE BOWL TORRANCE — It was raining the day before and the morning, the bowlers of So. California

Deaf Traveling League found the approaches stuck at Gable House Bowl. Some tried to use powder on their soles and others tried to adjust to do their best. As the result, only four bowlers made the day’s honor roll list.

For the second time in row, Leroy MacMonagle led the Honor Roll with 779 as it took him two games 170-177 to adjust and finish with 211-221. Francisco Navarro dueled with Gorman Low and won 3-2 by 5 pins with (232) 742 to Low’s (203) 737. Bob Jones had a misfortune of forgetting to bring his bowling balls so he struggled with a borrowed ball before finishing with a 223. The President Ed Abakumoff came two pins short of making the list with 698.

The ladies’ high series that day went to Patricia Morford with 651. Vice President Sharron Caldwell made the day’s ladies high game 199.

The only change in team standings was Abakumoff’s Riverside making a near sweep 17-3 win over L.A. County to leap from 5th place to a tie for 3rd place with Anaheim.

The league had a Turkey Shoot with one turkey each for man and woman making strikes in 3-6-9 frames. William Golyer won the men’s turkey and the 4 women were tied. So the President drew Sharron Caldwell’s name for the women’s turkey.

The league thanks Gable House management and staff taking the league in on short notice. Also the league wishes all a happy Thanksgiving and will finish its first round of traveling at Cal

Bowl on December 9th at 11:00 AM.

KEEPING TABS ON DEAF PRO BOWLER FRANK GALLO, JR.JACKSONVILLE — With PBA South Region Senior 10 tournaments completed for 2012, lets

see how the deaf long time PBA member Frank Gallo, Jr, Jacksonville, FL bowled in them. Gallo. Jr. has a (ss) destination after his name as a super senior meaning he is over 60 years old.

He had picked to bowl in 5 of the 10 events and his best was winning the third event on sched-ule at LaFayette Lanes in Fayetteville, NC. Here is his statistics. PBA South Region Senior Points standings – Gallo, Jr ranks 15th out of 185 senior members in this region bowling in 5 events gain-ing 51,957 points. Pro bowler Tom Baker led with 10 events and 127,702 points.

Earnings – Gallo, Jr. ranks 14th with 5 events $2,200.00. Pro bowler George Pappas led with8 events $6,850.00.

Average (minimum 40 games) – Gallo, Jr ranks 11th with 51 games 211.88 average. Pappas led with 99 games 222.91 average.

NORWALK — Recreation – an entertainment group who has entertained on behalf of the Bowlers to Veterans Fund in Veterans hospitals and other venues throughout the United States for many years suffered a great loss to their organization. Their truck and trailer with all their musical equipment and costumes for the current performing cho-rus were stolen and vandal-ized. The truck (damaged) and equipment (mostly gone) and costumes (vandalized and many gone) was recovered in Texas. There are always set-backs with any organization but to have all of their sound equipment and custom made costumes worth thousands of dollars stolen and vandalized - was a real blow.

While there is insurance to some extent it still doesn’t put the troop back in business in a timely fashion to contin-ue their rigorous schedule of performances. Equipment to replace, costumes to remake and adjusting to the trauma of suddenly having your liveli-hood taken away created a de-pression among this wonderful group. Recreation’s director Jay Mueller is an inspirational person and the entertainment group was spawned from a church oriented program many years ago. The fact that they had faith in God is helping them get through the mishap.

Recreation is special to California and has entertained at our many VA hospitals and bowling association events over the years – always giv-ing a memorable performance. California has led all donors to BVL since recordkeeping began and once more – Cali-fornia comes through.

The California USBC has donated $5,000 to help Recre-ation re-group and get back on the road and entertaining our veterans. God bless.

BK Wins ABTA Title $2,900 at Carter Lanes — (L to R) Kenny Kwan Runnerup $500, Jenny Boonyidee BK’s #1 supporter, BK Jiradej Harnpatakitpanich (Champion, $2,900) Tom Mazzulla (3rd) & David Emrich (5th).

Kong is Perfect at CarterABTA Regular Samson Kong fired a perfect game at Carter Bowl in our 6:00 PM Squad. He won a nice big sidepot and will also get an ABTA Annual Award for his great bowling. Offerring Congrats are Bob Smith (left) and Marv Crowder (right)

FULLERTON — We re-turned to Carter Bowl where we saw 156 entries come out on Saturday for a fun day of bowling. The cut scores were quite high +106 for the men and +78 for the women, on a rather easy shot this week. The Super Seniors added to the board (two men and one Woman) were Jerry Fagan +93, Ely Cruz +90, and Wendy Soo Hoo +27 for the women. Super seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 47 bowlers making it to the semi-finals. During the 6 pm squad Sam-son Kong bowled a 300 in his 2nd qualifying game.

The High qualifiers were Samson Kong for the men with a +236 and for the wom-en it was Ester Licauco with a +105. They will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed draws the Match Se-ries, and this time it was worth $266. Samson would draw the score and he drew a 399. We had no bowler matching that score,. Therefore, we will estimate the Match Series at $900 at Cal Bowl event. Den-nis Kelsey was the last per-son standing for the 3-6-9, he missed on his first shot, and he received a $50 consolation. The pot is $1,600 at Cal Bowl. this weekend.

In our optional doubles, finishing in first were Ping Romero and Stan Por with a 1625 for $130. Finishing in second was Sol Cericos and Stan Por with a 1589 for $110. There was a total of $1,460 paid out in doubles and 26

3-6-9 will be $1,600 • Match Series Est. at $950 • Match Game Still at $3,500ABTA at Cal Bowl Thanksgiving 4 Days Wed-Thur-Friday-Saturday Night Finals

After the semi-finals, the leader was Kenny “King” Kwan with a +160. Finishing in second missing by only 1 pin was Du Quach at a +159 so he will sit out the first round. It was close at the top as our third and fourth seeds tied with a + 156. Kwan had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. Kenny drew a 179. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had one bowler who shot that score, he was Rolly Itchon and he would take home the whole pot of $3,500. We still have three full pots and now a fourth pot started that is at $2,285, so next week we will go for $3,500 again.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Elvin Godoy, Stan Por, John Licauco, Kent Maruyama, Matt Garcia, Deborah Sanders (who lost a close match by a mere 1 pin) and Cecilia Lung each will get $100. In the second round, the four losers were Chonthida Athiprayoon, Emilio Flores, Sam Wu, and Thomas Licauco, each getting checks of $105.

This would get us down to the final five bowlers. The weekly horses are paying a low of $44, Du Quach, to a high of $125, Tom Mazzulla. In one match, the tenth seed David Emirch versus Tom Mazzulla the fifteenth seed. This was another of our good scoring matches where it went down to the tenth frame. David who would finish last needing only a double to win. He was

not able, so it was Tom finish-ing with a 156/206 to Davids 167/196 and advance to the next round. In the other match, it was Jiradej Harnpatanakit-panich the fourteenth seed ver-sus Du Quach the second seed. This was another one of the high scoring matches, where both bowlers bowled good and took it to the tenth frame. In this match it was BK who would come out on top with a 212/243 to Du’s 188/237 to advance. David and Du fin-ished in fourth and fifth getting checks for $110 each.

Our semi-final match was set, and would pit the four-teenth and fifteenth seeds from the semis against each other. In the weekly “horses”, we would see Tom paying $125 and BK paying $50 if they would win their match. This was again another one of BKs best, where he continued his top notch bowling. This again went down to the tenth frame, and it was BK who would edge out Tom who left the 4-7-10 split in the tenth and advance to the title match with a 226/257 to 202/252. Tom would take home $200 for his third place finish. For those lucky “investors” that had BK as a horse, he paid $50.

The title game was set and it would be top our qualifier Kenny Kwan going against fourteenth seed Jiradej Harn-patanakitpanich aka BK. He would start out this match on fire as he would open up the first four frames with strikes, while Kenny would start out with a double and then missed a 10 pin in the third frame. After four frames BK would

have a ten pin lead. The match would stay close all the way to the tenth frame where it was left to BK to finish last need-ing only a mark to win it. He left the 4 pin on his first ball and would barely pick it up and then got seven pins to take home his fourth title with a 213/244 to Kwan’s183/238. He would take home $1,000 for the victory and an addition-al $1,700 for Cash and Carry to give him a total of $2,700. Kenny would take home $500 for his second place finish.

Champion BK, is from Buena Park and used a Co-lumbia Oath drilled by Mike Wahl. BK is single. Bk would like to thank Jenny for all her support, Mike for taking care of his equipment, and a special thanks to Mark Baker for all his coaching and the ABTA staff. He and Jenny Manage the (Super) Sweetie Tahi res-taurant in Cerritos Try it and You will love that food there for sure!!!

Kenny Kwan, Second Place, is from Los Angeles and used a Twisted Fury drilled by Billy Chao. He is married, would like to thank his family for their support, friends for their cheers and encourage-ment, the Mou-Liu league, to ABTA Member and pal An-thony Ta and a special thanks to David Quon. a staunch ABTA member for Years

Tom Mazzula, Third Place, is from Highland and used a Ransom drilled by Vince Sisk. He is married to Kathy and they have two children Matt and Ashllyn. He would like to thank his family for their sup-port, even though on this night they were at Disneyland en-joying a day at the park while dad bowled. He would also like to thank Carter for hosting the tourney and the ABTA and its staff.

The weekly ball sponsor winner of a 900 Global Ball was Robert Ricketts. Each time you bowl, you get a free ticket for this prize given away by our Sponsor, 900 Global. The rest of the results are in the payoff sheet in this paper.

Its history folks as Jiradej Harnpatanakitpanich en-ters the archives as our latest champion.

las Vegas Travel league

by Darlene HomFOUNTAIN VALLEY —

We give thanks for the beauti-ful sunny blue skies that were with us as we met at Valley View Lanes for week 13. We would like to thank the staff for their help and the coffee.

With only two, two hun-dred games shot all day Annie Maae had one of them with a 203/535.

Maxx Paul shot a 526, Marilyn Robinson 512, Kim Cato 511, Cathy Wyatt 212.

Jarra Gallina, one of the under 155 average bowlers shot a very nice 502 series. Nice bowling Jarra.

Fountain Bowl 1 rolled the high handicap series of 1944. High handicap game of 720 was shot by Westminster 2. Westminster2 is still on top with 34 wins.

Well, I guess all the ladies were saving all the “turkeys” for Thursday. I hope you and your families all have a won-derful Thanksgiving. See on the lanes next week @ Cal Bowl 10a.m.

TERRY CHITTENTEN Bowls Her First 300by Frank Weiler

REDLANDS — Terry Chittenden bowled her first perfect game in EMPIRE BOWL’S Young, Old and Restless ladies league, after competing for thirty-seven years. She used her Roto Grip Grand Illusion bowling ball to roll a nice 682 (191 - 300 - 191) series on her big day.

Terry’s previous high game was a 290 bowled in March 2011. Her highest series is a 761 bowled at RIM LANES in Crestline, where the rarefied mountain air makes bowling more fun. Terry currently is averaging 213, just one pin below her highest book average, bowled in 2003-2004 at Rim Lanes.

Chittenten was a regular at Rim Lanes as a junior bowler be-cause her parents (JOHN and LORRIE IACONO) were Rim’s proprietors from 1975 - 2004. She worked at the her parents bowling center from 1975 - 1987. She also coached junior bowl-ers, served as a league secretary for over ten years and was a WIBC house representative for five years.

Terry’s Mom taught her to bowl and had Terry competing in the Citrus Belt Junior Travel League as soon as she was eligible. From there it was on to the Citrus Belt Women’s Scratch Travel League. She has been a scratch bowler ever since.

Terry likes to play the lanes from the corner, usually roll-ing her ball over the eight board and hooking it into the pocket at a perfect six degree angle. I have watched her bowl and am amazed at the speed she generates.

She bowled her perfecto on lanes one and two, moving to the five board that day.

Mrs.Chittenten’s husband Clyde is not a bowler. The couple met in school without Clyde knowing of Terry’s bowling back-ground. He asked Terry to go bowling on their first date because there wasn’t much else to do in Crestline. That date led to a wonderful relationship, marriage, kids and love to last a lifetime. Clyde is still just an occasional recreational bowler, but is one hundred per cent behind Terry’s bowling pursuits.

Terry wishes to thank her parents and husband for their sup-port through the years, the staff at Empire Bowl, and the BOWL-ING NEWS for recognizing her accomplishment. Finally, Terry is grateful to all the bowlers in the Young, Old and Restless League for celebrating her achievement with a cake and refresh-ments.

ray Gibbs Passes

by Andy ClarkNORWALK — Ray Gibbs,

passed away on November 11th due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. The family had a private ser-vice this week and he will be cremated.

I bowled with Ray periodi-cally in tournaments around Southern CA (until about 2001 when he could no longer bowl).

Ray Gibbs sometimes had his name mentioned in the Western Bowling News and California Bowling News.

I know he bowled back in the 90’s in the Whitlock League. Ray was a former City Manager (can’t remem-ber which City) and later an Executive Director of a non-profit agency that helped un-employed workers find jobs, before he retired.

as Deputy Chief of the Explosive Unit for the Fire Department. He felt Robin could do anything she wanted because she worked at it. If she couldn’t get something she worked and worked until she got it. More than a natural – he said she was an athlete who had the great hand-eye coordination and when she wanted something she went after it.

Robin wasn’t very happy to hear her parents had made a concrete decision to move California and she felt upset and a little abandoned because she perceived the family was breaking up and the kids weren’t included in that decision. She lived in NY for a Year and then finally gave in and heeded her mothers words, You can be a big fish in a big pond or remain a little fish in a little pond, and she, Debbie and grandma moved to California. It was time to be together again. The Romeo girls were admired by many and proving the point, when Robin and her sister Tori complained bitterly about having to do dishes, an admiring New York boyfriend sent her a dishwasher!

Like many athletes she was superstitious about some things and for years wouldn’t bowl without her Jet socks on. Her father was a big factor in her life and was always with her when she bowled tournaments. Never one to blow her own horn, Robin was always a lady and was gifted with gen-erosity. At the time of the Oklahoma disaster she had won a $10,000 first place prize in a PWBA tournament and little known was that she donated half of her winnings to the disaster victims.

During her years of bowling she has learned valuable things, not only about form and approach, delivery of the ball and arm swing, but keeping your head in the game. According to author and Coach Mark Baker, who says, “I have had the pleasure of being involved with Robin Romeo three different ways through the sport of bowling. First as her doubles partner, second as her bowling coach, and thirdly, she is now one of the coaches of my bowling camp, “Camp Bakes”. What can I say about her? Simple, she is a class act!! It doesn’t matter if she is competing or coaching, she always gives 100%. People like Robin Romeo are what make bowling such a great game. I’m proud to call her my friend.” She has become an expert at teaching those things to bowlers. She is a believer in helping people to bowl better and currently goes to Mission Hills Bowl in Southern California weekly and for a small fee will coach bowlers.

Robin and her younger sister Tori bowled their share of tournaments together and Tori tells the story that one of Robin’s favorite singers is Meatloaf who sings a song called Paradise by the Dash Board Light. In most of the centers they bowled in there was Karaoke in the bar and one particular night after bowling Robin asked Tori if she wanted to sing the song – an 11 minute rendition yet. They knew the song verbatim but Tori said she needed to shore up the courage with a drink or two and then they launched into it – a male and female part. Tori sang the very animated female part which suited her well and Robin sang the male part. The amazing thing about this spontaneous per-formance is that Robin has always been a more conservative in control person so it overwhelmed everyone. Who would have believed Robin Romeo was a closet Karaoke buff! It went over so well that the cheering crowd gave them a standing ovation! When the word got out about their perfor-mance it became a request at every stop. Tori said when they went back to Oklahoma the next year people didn’t come to watch them bowl they came to hear them sing! When Robin retired from her professional career they surprised her with a party after a doubles tournament and of course – the two gave their rendition of Meatloaf’s Paradise by the Dash Board Light.

Robin’s incredible record of accomplishments include: 18 National Titles (including three majors); 12 Regional Titles (WWPB); six Women’s All Star Association titles; four WIBC Titles; seven California State Titles and two state titles in New York. She has 23 sanctioned 300 games and eight 800 series’.

1989 was a bumper year and she was named Bowler of the Year by seven different organizations and publications. She was named to the Southern California All Star team 16 times, WIBC All American Team six times and Bowler’s Journal All American Team four times and honored in seven Hall’s of Fame the most recent being the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.

Over the years she has been a committed supporter of women’s pro tournaments and has an unprecedented record 77 finals – consecutive years from 1985 to 1989 and a record 80 cashes – con-secutive from 1985 to 1989. Closest to this record is Mark Roth who is in the 50’s. She has been honored for Image – Professionalism and Sportsmanship and was a recipient of the Merle Matthew’s Achievement Award for Outstanding Performance in 1990.

Her most recent win in 2012 was the inaugural Senior Women’s Triple Crown Shootout, presented by the Orleans Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, NV where she defeated Dana Miller-Mackie, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 249-204 in her first match and Lucy Sandelin, Tampa, Fla., 243-208 in the final match. She had recently bested 60 women in the Senior U.S. Women’s Open making her the only woman to win both the U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open and the Triple Crown gave her the Trifecta. Like the Energizer Bunny, she keeps going and she gets better. She says she always does better in the tournaments where you have to grind it out because she was a good spare shooter and got very few splits. She says she tries not to pay attention to what her opponent is doing and just concentrates on her game and it has paid off.

Among her special memories was her Doubles win with Jeanne Naccarato. She met another outstanding performer Jeanne (Maiden) Naccarato early in her professional career. They became roommates and traveling companions for 20 years and just prior to 2000 both had lost their fathers. When the Sam’s Town Doubles came around in 2000 they decided they would win it for their fathers. Robin said it was the first time she and Jeanne could bowl together as doubles partners and it was her most memorable win. Her dad was her mentor and she said was having a real hard time bowl-ing after he passed away. Her timing was bad and she had trouble focusing and so on. “The week before we had bowled in San Diego and didn’t bowl well so I came home before she went to Vegas for the doubles tournament. I practiced a lot and my ex-husband Bill said, “Why don’t you just get up there and throw the ball, don’t even get set just pick the ball up and go.” That’s what she did and she threw a lot of strikes, couldn’t miss. When she got to Vegas she told Jeanne what the plan was and Jeanne said, “Whatever works.” The rest is history... dedicating the win to their fathers was a great motivator, the most emotional win ever and they knew their Dads were watching.

The two drove to all the tournaments to save on money and said it was much easier to be able to go to the next tournament when they were finished. They had so much fun traveling together and they also traveled with Pros Carol Norman, Barbara Renner, Toni Gillard, Pam Buckner, Tori Carter, Rachel Perez and Lynda Barnes. Jeanne recalls their asking for directions and it was always Robin who would ask. Invariably, Robin would return to the car saying, “I didn’t understand a word he said.” Then, Jeanne would try to decipher the directions. It happened so often it became a standing joke.

In many ways her entire life, has been devoted to bowling and turning 50 hasn’t slowed Robin Romeo down. She says the competitive juices are still flowing. She is a collector of bowling memorabilia and has hundreds of items which, of course include her many awards. Her greatest fans are her boyfriend Tom and her mother. The Romeo family is close but all five kids are independent – a tribute to her parents.

What does it take to be a champion? Perseverance, focus, good decision making, temperament, coordination, and it helps to be a class act. That’s Robin Romeo.

Georgia’s George Gohagan III wins Pba all region south Point open;Ishman and barrett team up for Member/non-Member doubles crown LAS VEGAS — Amateur George Gohagan III of Roswell, Ga., defeated Shannon Pluhowsky

of Kettering, Ohio, on the fourth shot in a one-ball sudden death roll off, 10-9, after they tied at 224-224, to win the Professional Bowlers Association All Region South Point Open at South Point Bowling Center on Saturday, Nov. 10. The players threw three matching strikes in the roll-off be-fore Gohagan broke the tie on the fourth attempt.

In a companion event held in conjunction with the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IV, amateur Adam Ishman of Las Vegas and Barrett defeated amateur Raul Rosales of El Monte, Calif. and Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., 502-459, to win the PBA West Region Member/Non-Member Doubles on Sunday.

Gohagan, who earned $3,500, defeated England’s Dom Barrett, 300-298, in a nail-biting semifi-nal round to advance to the title match while Pluhowsky ousted Tom Daugherty of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 247-236, in the other semifinal match.

The All Region South Point Open included two other stunning matches, both involving the finalists. Barrett won his best-of-three-game Round of 8 match against Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., by winning an 11-ball sudden death roll-off after they tied a 280-280 in game two. Both play-ers threw 10 strikes in a row before Troup left a pin standing on his 11th attempt.

Gohagan and Ron Nelson Jr. of Bridgeview, Ill., battled to a 300-300 tie in the second game of their best-of-five Round of 16 match, and each then threw three strikes in the roll-off before Go-hagan’s fourth strike eliminated Nelson’s seven-count. Gohagan went on to win the contest, 3-2, with a 268-253 win in game five.

In the doubles event, first-time partners Ishman and Barrett earned $4,400. They eliminated Chris Klerk of Chandler, Ariz. and Martin Larsen of Sweden, 485-461, in the semifinal round while Rosales and Haugen edged Vince Wood of Moreno Valley, Calif. and Eddie VanDaniker Jr. of Chatsworth, Calif., 438-434, in their semifinal round match.

The All Region South Point Open drew an international field of 157 competitors while the Member/Non-Member Doubles drew a field of 66 teams.

STUDIO CITY — If my calculations are correct and they usually are; summer has come to an end and the bitter cold California winter is steadily creeping in. I was born and raised in Montana so I should be able to handle the below zero temps and the blinding snowstorms that are sure to strike the Los Angeles area. However, if you’re a L.A. native that might be a bit more difficult. Quite a nasty picture I have painted, no? Have no fear! For any of you Angelites looking to stem the tide of winter woes I know just the cure! Bowling at PINZ! Bring your friends! Your family! Or if you’re a pathetic loser come all by yourself! Everyone is welcome at PINZ!!

ADULTSI don’t like to refer to you guys as “Adults” because

if you’re anything like me then you are really just a child trapped in an adult’s body. That being said, you kids have really been bowling like adults lately.
