President’s Message Wearepleasedtoreportthatour2018FallShow&Salewasarousingsuccess.Ourpublicityeffortsworkedquitewell,duetoalotofparticipationbymembers,ourvendorsturnedoutwithafineselectionofplantsforsale,andourshowwasoutstanding.(SeethephotosofPeople’sChoicesinthisissueofOntheDrySide.)Weareparticularlygratefulforthevolunteerworkthatmadethiseventworksowell.

ThegoodnewsofcourseisthattheMBACSSshow&salefuelsoutprogramsthroughouttheyear.Weworktogethersoeverymemberbenefits!

Wearealreadythinkingaboutthe2019SpringShow&Sale,partlytobuildonthemulti-facetedpublicityinitiativesthatworkedsowellthistime.

Forthatevent,weneedtorecruitanewSaleChair.Ifyou’reinterestedinhelpingoutinthisway,letanyboardmemberknow.Wecanprovidefulldetailsoftheroleforthisimportantposition.It’sreallynotoverwhelming,butitrequirestheleadershipofoneofourmembers.

WearealsorecruitingforaMembershipChair.Ourcurrentchairperson,KarenValentine,willcontinuehergreatworkthroughthiscalendaryear,butherfamilyresponsibilitiesrequirethatshehandthistasktoanothermember.Again,shecanprovideallyouneedtoknowforthisassignment.Letheroranotherboardmemberofyourinterest.

WearenowgearingupforourHolidayParty,whichwilloccuratthetimeofourregularlyscheduledmeetingforDecember.Wealwayswelcomevolunteers,andwillannounceopeningsduringourNovembermeeting.

TheHolidayParty,asalways,willincludealiveauctionofexceptionalplantsprovidedbymembers.DetailstofollowintheDecembernewsletter.

Chairpersons’ReportsTreasury:LidiaHernandezherfinancialreportoftheFall2018Show&Sale.Thenetproceedsapparentlyreachedanewrecord,pendingpossibleminorchangesintherecords.Membership:KarenValentinereportedthatshehascompletedtheupdateofthemembershiproster.JorgeQuinonezandSarahMartinwillworkwithKarentoposttherosteronGoogleDrive,andassistaccessbyboardmembers.Karendistributed78ofthenewMBACSSwelcomebrochureattheFall2018Show&Sale,andsignedupnewmemberswhojoinedfollowingthesale.Shealsoreportedattendancedataatrecentmonthlymeetings.Sunshine:SharonLucchesireportedthatmemberMansonWatershadsufferedamildstroke,andisrestingathome.Shewillsendaget-wellcardonbehalfofMBACSS.Program:SarahMartinreportedthatourNovemberprogramisapresentationbyGuillermoRiveraofPlantExpeditions,Inc.,onagrouptriptoMadagascarthatheorganized.CSSA:JorgeQuiñonezindicatedthattheCSSAispreparingtoelectitsofficers.

OldBusinessFallShow&Sale:GaryStubblefieldreportedthatthiseventwentwell,generally,andthatvolunteershelpedtomakeitsucceed.Henoted,however,thatvolunteerswerenotavailableforfinalcleanupandconsequentlytheCityofSanJuanBautistaclaimedourcleaningdeposit,whichwassubstantial.Theboardrevolvedtorecruitacleanupvolunteer(orcrew)forfollowingshow&saleevents.FallShow&SalePublicity:Fallsalewasamajorsuccess,anewrecord.Theboardidentifiedthemaincontributortothissuccesswaspublicity/advertising,whichincludedthefollowingcomponents:• SocialmedialistingsonNextDoor,Craigslist,andFacebook• AnnouncementintheMontereyBayCertifiedFarmers’Marketsnewsletter• Publicserviceannouncements(PSAs)onlocalradiostations• Emailstobuyerswhosignedupatrecentshows• Distributionof“dollar-off”postcardsbyMBACSSmembers• Postingofflyersatlocalgardencenters,etc.,byMBACSSmembers• TomKarwin’sarticleintheMontereyHeraldandSantaCruzSentinel

HavingoursaledateoverlapwiththedateoftheSucculentExtravaganzainCastrovilleseemedtobeunwelcomecompetition,butBayAreabuyers,travellingbycharterbus,stoppedattheMBACSSsaleinSanJuanBautista,andboughtmanyplants.EllenStubblefieldpromotedthisstopoverwiththeSanFranciscoCSS.ThanksEllen!SarahMartinretrievedthepostcardmailinglisttoolateforthisevent,butreadyforfutureshows&sales.OtherpromotionalactionsshouldincludesendingtimelypressreleasestonearbyCSSnewslettereditors,andexploringpossibilitiesforco-promotionwitheventssuchastheSucculentExtravaganzaandeventsinSanJuanBautista.ProjectionScreenUpdate:VFWCommanderDavidAndersmetbrieflywiththeboardregardingthealmost-completeinstallationofthenewprojectionscreen.ThisprojectisagoodcollaborationwithMBACSS&VFW.MBACSSParticipationin2019CSSAConvention:TomKarwinindicatedthattheCentralCoastCSShasinquiredagainaboutvolunteersandadvertisersforthisevent.HewillmentiontheseinterestsduringthegeneralmeetingandincluderelatedinformationintheNovembernewsletter.

NewBusinessBoardResignation:KarenValentineresignedasmembershipchairduetofamilyissues.SheprovidedaletterofresignationindicatinganeffectiveJanuary1,2019orearlier,ifanewchairisappointed.Shealsoprovidedalistofthedutiesofthisboardposition,forreferencebyapplicants.Boardmembersexpressedappreciationforheraccomplishmentsasmembershipchair,anddiscussedwritingandadoptingdutiesforallchairpositions.Springshow:TheSpringShowwillbeApril13&14,2019,againattheSanJuanBautistalocation.GaryStubblefieldwillserveagainasfloormanager,andNaomiBlosswillserveagainasshowchair.Wewillneedasaleschair!

GuillermoRiveraisoriginallyfromCordoba,Argentina,andcurrentlylivesinSarasota,Florida.HeearnedhisPhD.inbotanyattheUniversidadNacionaldeCordoba.

WhileworkingforCordobaBotanicalGardens,hecreatedPlantExpeditions,acompanythatspecializesinbotanical,birding,andnaturalhistorytours,mainlyintheSouthernHemisphere(Chile,Argentina,Brazil,Peru,Colombia,Bolivia,Ecuador,SouthAfrica,Madagascar,andNamibia,butalsointheU.S.A.,MexicoandBajaCalifornia.Heistheownerofthecompany,anditsbotanicalguide.Forthelast15years,hehasbeendedicatedtotheorganizationoftoursthroughoutSouthAmerica,Mexico,andAfricawithemphasisonplants(succulents,bromeliads,orchids),birding,andnature.

Cactus Mammilaria

ThegenusMammillariaisoneofthelargestinthecactusfamily(Cactaceae),withcurrently200knownspeciesandvarietiesrecognized.MostofthemammillariasarenativetoMexico,butsomecomefromthesouthwestUnitedStates,theCaribbean,Colombia,Venezuela,GuatemalaandHonduras.Thecommonname"pincushioncactus"referstothisandthecloselyrelatedgenusEscobaria.

ThefirstspecieswasdescribedbyCarlLinnaeusasCactusmammillarisin1753,derivingitsnamefromLatinmammilla,"nipple",referringtothetuberclesthatareamongthedistinctivefeaturesofthegenus.Numerousspeciesarecommonlyknownasglobecactus,nipplecactus,fishhookcactusorpincushioncactusthoughsuchtermsmayalsobeusedforrelatedtaxa,particularlyEscobaria.
