Cinque Terre — Italian Riviera, ItalyCinque Terre (fi ve towns), Italy is a beau ful and
fascina ng place. The geology is incredibly complexand exci ng, even to non-geologists. It is composed of the Mari me Alps in the west and the Ligurian ‘nappes’of the Apennines in the east. The relief in this area isextraordinarily high, over 3300 feet within 3 miles.Spectacular geological cross-sec ons of the Apenninesare visible on the cliff s along the coast. The cover photoshows a lovely reverse fault.
There is signifi cant deforma on from the Jurassicocean spreading phase to the Late Cretaceous-Miocenesubduc on and collisional phases. The Ligurian, Sub-Ligurian, and Tuscan units – are components of theNorthern Apennines fold and-thrust belt. The highlydeformed strata are a result of the Adria-Europecon nental collision.

This month has been a very sad month. We had three NOGS members pass on. Hank Ecroyd,Phil Johnson, and Tom Klekamp are no longer with us. Please read the memorials in this issue. Theywill truly be missed. Our sympathies go out to their families and friends. Tom was a dedicated memberwho was currently working on the fi eld trip to Baton Rouge.

All geologists learn the fundamental underlying principleof our science, Uniformitarianism, popularized by CharlesLyell with the phrase “the present is the key to the past.”It can be hard to imagine that this phrase was once usedalmost as a marke ng slogan to argue a grand debatebetween catastrophists, those who believed that the earthwas shaped primarily by short-lived, catastrophic events,and those who believed that compara vely slow processesof erosion and deposi on seen on a daily basis couldexplain much of what we see in the world today. Todaymost geologists view the world in a sort of happy medium:many changes do occur gradually, and the processes can beobserved all around us. The Grand Canyon was formed bythe slow erosion by the Colorado River, but some geologiststoday think the modern canyon formed in just 5-6 millionyears, very fast in geologic terms, through the connec ngof some paleocanyons that may have been much older[1].The Louisiana Gulf Coast was formed by sediments fromthe Mississippi River, but most of that sediment comes inshort-lived fl ood events. Change is both fast and slow.
Although past issues of the NOGS LOG are not easily searchable (which we should rec fy), I am certain that I amnot the fi rst NOGS President to men on the phrase. I alsomay not be the fi rst to turn that phrase around for anotherpurpose. I believe the present is not only the key to thepast – it is also the key to the future. In my experiencemost geologists are more comfortable specula ng aboutthe past than the future. But part of my job is an cipa ngthe future to set NOGS up for success.
In previous columns I have wri en about the substan alchanges NOGS has been forced to undergo due to loss of revenue during this industry downturn. We have had tomake tough fi nancial decisions and may have to makemany more to improve our fi nancial situa on. The eventswe observe today suggest that the future of NOGS may bevery diff erent if we are to con nue the great ac vi es wehost through the year. There is a strong possibility that theadver sing revenue we relied on in the past to fund theLOG may not return. (We are s ll looking for an adver singchair if anyone wants to challenge that assump on). Thiscould force us to change the distribu on model for the LOG, Gelimina ng print en rely, or self-publishing a newsle er. Itmay mean that we need to embrace alterna ve revenue

streams. Few organiza ons have been able to profi t fromdigital media – see the demise of so many of the na on’snewspapers, or the reduc on of the local Times-Picayuneto only three days a week to see the impact this has had.Maybe we can buck that trend, fi nd a way to mone ze digitaladver sing, and convince buyers that digital adver sing isas good as print. One possibility the Board has discussedis seeking adver sers outside of tradi onal oil and gas. Atthis point everything is on the table.
We also all need to think about the future of geologyand geologists in New Orleans. At the Deepwater TechnicalSymposium this year the NOGS Geoscience seminar wason “Deepwater Explora on in a Digi zed World,” includingseismic machine learning, or automated interpreta on.Last year I took a machine learning course throughStanford Online, in order to keep my own skills on top of the latest trends, not just in geology, but everywhere. Thefuture is coming at us faster than ever, and it is in all of our best interests to embrace it. I have heard more thanone geologist express dismay at the movement towardcompu ng and a fear that machines are going to take ourjobs away. I believe this is misguided, as much as worryingthat 3D work sta ons would eliminate interpretersbecause we would no longer need to pull out coloredpencils. Nothing could have been further from the truththen, and nothing is now. The reason for machine learningis that data is being generated faster than humans are ableto interpret it all, and because some algorithms can fi ndpa erns in data that humans have never thought to lookfor, had the me to look for, or been able to detect throughthe noise. Machine learning does not take away jobs – itcreates opportuni es by fi nding informa on that we werepreviously ignoring. I will give you a predic on: no machineis ever going to be able to say, “drill here,” convince yourboss to put the money on the line, and then explain whyyou found a dry hole. But it might be able to help you do so.
Besides future technology, we have to look to thefuture of NOGS members. I believe oil and gas will be thebackbone of NOGS for a very long me. However, it is in ourbest interest to ensure that NOGS is the Society of choicefor all geologists in New Orleans. This is both becauseNew Orleans has experienced a steady decline, with upsand downs, in upstream oil and gas employment, but alsobecause jobs for geologists in other industries have grown.We also have to ensure we are a society that is providingbenefi ts to a younger genera on of geologists. NOGSvolunteers like Liz McDade have helped raise the presenceof NOGS on Facebook. We have a YouTube channel, aLinkedIn page, and a new, updated website, thanks to thework of Christy Himel. We have to do more to get and keepthe next genera on involved, and that means staying ontop of the latest trends and being cognizant of the future.

(picture below). The course was focused on salt tectonicsand sequence stra graphy in the Paradox Basin, an analogfor the work I do in the Gulf of Mexico. It had been a long me since I was in the fi eld, and unsurprisingly, I felt a li le
rusty, as my day-to-day work o en involves nothing morethan seismic and a handful of deepwater well logs. Ge ngout West, and seeing rocks up close, reminded me why Ibecame a geologist in the fi rst place. I resolved to get outin the fi eld more o en, and I encourage you all to do thesame. In December NOGS will be leading a trip to see theMississippi River model at LSU. This is a great opportunityto see this truly one-of-a-kind laboratory and learn about
some of the important work being done by geologists inour own backyard. The trip was mostly organized by thelate Tom Klekamp, for whom a memorial is running in thisissue of the NOGS LOG. He gave to NOGS literally up tohis last day, and I will always be grateful for the kindnesshe showed to me, and all he did to make NOGS what it istoday. The past is also the key to the present.

ABSTRACTThe Chicxulub Impact Structure is a leading
candidate for the cause of the extinction at theCretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary. Thisstructure is located on the northwestern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Yucatan in Mexico. The crater is illed and buried by Tertiary carbonates so that surface evidence of the 180 km diameter, 3 km deep crater which resulted from the impact is very sparse. Images of gravity andtopographic data that I collected and/or compiledshow the size and form of the buried crater. Having the history of researching Chicxuluballowed me to recognize impact caused tsunami“ripples” in northern Louisiana 3D seismic data.Justiss Oil granted me access to a core across the K/Pg. I will present some of my research in Mexico, that will illustrate the effects of the impact in northern Louisiana with seismic data, well-log data and core data and will demonstrate theextent of the impact effects with published mapsof the K/Pg Boundary Deposit.
BIOGRAPHYGary Kinsland was born in Eugene, Oregon
6/10/47 and grew up in southwestern Oregon.He graduated from Coquille High School in1965. From 1965 until 1969 he attended the University of Rochester (U of R) in Rochester,N.Y. and received his B.S. in Physics. The next fallhe entered the Geology program at the U of Rand received an M.S. in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1974 pursuing studies in high-pressure earth mantlemineral phases and strengths. After two years asa post-doc at U of R Gary took a visiting assistant professor job at Arizona State University forthe 1976 -77 year where he learned and taught exploration geophysics. In the fall of 1977 he

Hehas remained at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, no longer teachesmineralogy, but hasconcentrated on geophysical research.For several yearshe led a researcheffort dedicated to the development of the coalbed natural gas resources of northern Louisiana. Since 1994 he has pursued research related to the Chicxulub Impact Structure on theYucatan Peninsula of Mexico. He has collectedand interpreted geophysical and topographic data over the feature and more recently hasfound geophysical and subsurface evidence of theeffects of the impact in the subsurface of northernLouisiana. He is now a full professor holding thePioneer Production Endowed Professorship inGeology and Petroleum Engineering.

On Saturday, September 22, NOGS hostedEnergy Day at the Louisiana Children’s Museum.The event drew over 600 a endees and contained energy sources from oil and gas to steam, coal,hydro, nuclear, wind and solar. As children entered the museum, they were able to spin the Energy wheel which had pie-chart-sized shapes for thepercentage of each type of energy. It was apparentthat oil and gas were cri cal and comprised over 65% of our energy consump on in the USA. Also there was a special sta on celebra ng NewOrleans 300th birthday demonstra ng that woodand candles were the energy of the day.
NOGS was joined by our long-term partners the Southeastern Geophysical Society, yy Tulane’sPhysics Department K-12 outreach, Energywiseand STEM NOLA. We were graced with 14enthusias c students from Cathy Boucvalt’s John Cur s High School classes. Our NOGS volunteersincluded Tom George, Doug Bradford, JaredBullock, Mike Fauquier, Mike and Opie Anderson,William Vollenwider and Dianne Lynne. Berniey

In St. Charles Parish, Bayou Des AllemandsField, (G), Costa Energy has completed the #1 Simoneaux, SN 251069, as a gas well in the UL-5Sand, fl owing 2230 MCFD and 77 BCPD thoughperforations 11,440 to 11,464 feet. The well wasdrilled to total depth of 12,475 feet in Sec. 13,15S-20E.
Byron Energy has plugged and abandoned the#1 Weiss Adler, SN 251204, in Shell Island Field, (H), St. Mary Parish at a total depth of 17,766feet. The well was located in Sec. 7, 18S-12E,approximately 1 mile west of production in West Deer Island Field.
LLOX has plugged and abandoned its #1 Patout Bros, SN 251216, in Lydia Field, (I), IberiaParish. It was drilled to a total depth of 9560 inSec. 15, 13S-7E. It was drilled as a rank wildcat,located more than 1 mile from the nearest well.

SHELF AND DEEPWATER ACTIVITIESby Al Baker
During September 2018, the BOEM approved 75Gulf of Mexico drilling permits. Twenty of these were for shelf wells, and 55 were for deepwater wells. Of the total number of permits, there were 5 new wellpermits; 3 were issued on the shelf and 2 in deepwater.
The 3 shelf new well permits were for 2 explorationwells and 1 development well. The exploration permitsincluded one to Gulfslope Energy for their Ship Shoal 351 #1 and one to EnVen Energy Ventures for their South Pelto 16 #1 well. The development well permit was granted to Walter Oil & Gas for their South Timbalier 320 #A-3 well.
The 2 deepwater new well permits were for exploration wells. ExxonMobil received a permit for their Mississippi Canyon 779 #TE-1, and Chevron U.S.A. obtained a permit for their Mississippi Canyon 607 #2 well.
On September 28th, IHS-Petrodata reported that the Gulf of Mexico mobile offshore rig supply stood at 76, which is 1 less than last month. The marketed rig supply consisted of 45 rigs, of which 35 were under contract. The marketed rig supply number was the sameas reported last month, and the contracted rig supplywas 1 less than the previous month. The marketed contracted versus total rig supply utilization rate
stands at 59.2%, and the marketed contracted versusmarketed supply utilization rate stands at 77.8%. Bycomparison, the September 2017 total fl eet utilizationrate stood at 37.2% (versus 46.1% today) with 35 out of the 94 rigs under contract.
As of September 28th, BakerHughes indicated that there were 18 active mobile offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, which is 51.4% of the rigs under contract mentioned above. This active rigs number is 2 morethan as reported last month. Of the 18 rigs, 3 are located on the shelf, and ff 15 are situated in deepwater. At the same time last year, there were 22 mobile offshore rigsoperating in the Gulf of Mexico representing a 22.2%decline year over year.
As of September 28th, the BakerHughes total U.S. rig count stood at 1054 rigs, which are 6 more thanreported at the end of August 2018. Of the 1054 rigs,863 (81.9%) are oil rigs and 189 (17.9%) are gas rigs. A year ago, there were 940 rigs working in the U.S. Thus,the current rig fi gure represents a 12.1% increase in rigs year over year. Texas still has the largest number of rigs with 529, which is slightly over half (50.2%) of the total number of rigs in the U.S. Louisiana has a total of 62 rigs, up 7 rigs from last month.
As of September 27th, the BOEM had accepted a total of 18 of the 144 high bids received in OCS Sale 251, which was held in New Orleans on August 15,2018. The remaining bids that are under evaluation total 126. The 90-day clock for the bid evaluation period runs out on November 13th.

~ In Memorium ~Hank Edmond Ecroyd
Hank Edmond Ecroydpassed away on Thursday,September 27, 2018, atthe age of 63. Hank wasborn on February 12, 1955 in Bad Kreuznach,Germany. Because of hisfather’s military career,Hank grew up in manyloca ons fi nally se lingwith his family in theBelton, Texas area. Hegraduated from Killeen
High School in 1974 and was a star-member of theirchampionship water polo team. In 1977, he graduatedfrom Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree ingeophysics. He ini ally became employed as apetroleum explora on geophysicist with Tenneco Oiland later, in 1980, with Forest Oil in Lafaye e, LA. In1991, Hank moved to Mandeville, LA and furthered hisgeophysical career at Century Off shore, Murphy Oiland Chie ain Interna onal in the greater New Orleansarea. In August 2001, he formed Beacon Explora on,LLC, an independent consul ng and prospectgenera on fi rm, with his business partner and long- me geological associate, Al Baker.
During his 41-year, talented career, Hank wasresponsible for mul ple, commercial discoveries of oiland gas in the U.S. Gulf region. His uncanny ability tointerpret abstract scien fi c data and develop it intodrillable prospects was a rare and commendable feat.Hank was a member of many professional socie es,including the Society of Explora on Geophysicists, theSociety of Independent Professional Earth Scien stsand the New Orleans Geological Society.
Hank’s true legacy is the tremendous infl uenceand economic impact he had on the Honduran familyof his wife, Maria. Through his generosity, Hankwas instrumental with her in establishing a large,commercial coff ee planta on that employs many of her family members. It also provides jobs and incomesfor many others from the village of Choloma locatedin the mountains within the State of Santa Barbara,Honduras. The livelihoods of many Hondurans arebecause of Hank’s vision for the future and hissuccessful eff orts to achieve his dreams for all.
Hank is survived by his loving wife Maria TeceroEcroyd, his daughter Emma Yvonne Ecroyd Tyler, hisstep-son Jose’ Mendoza and step-daughter Ligia M.Mendoza, his mother, Roseland Francois JacksonEcroyd and his sister, Abbess Thecla (formerly SherryEcroyd). He was preceded in death by his father, U.S.Army Sargent Major Henry Edmond Ecroyd. Hank hadthree grandchildren, Maria Jose’ Pascua, Gracia MariaPascua and Jose’ Amiliar Pascua. Hank will be missedby all who knew and loved him.

Phil JohnsonPhil, a graduate of
Penn State, hired on with Pan American Petroleum in 1962, star ng in their Corpus Chris offi ce and fi nished his master’s thesis in Geophysics in 1966. He was transferred to the Houston offi ce in summer of 1964 and
then to their Tulsa General offi ce to work on a specialproject in July of 1967.
I met Phil in 1968 when I also was transferred toTulsa to work on that same special project. In fact, heand I shared a very large offi ce together and becamebest friends then. I worked in Tulsa for 10 years beforeI felt the need to get back to the region to do more“hands-on” explora on-type of work, so I transferredto New Orleans in 1978. To my great fortune, Philfollowed by coming down to New Orleans in Dec of 1981.
Phil con nued with PanAm (which became AMOCO)un l his re rement in June 1995. He did someconsul ng with BP and others and was an independentconsultant un l recently. Phil was an expert in velocitydetermina ons from seismic data, integra on of seismic with well control and imaging enhancements.He has always enjoyed sharing his knowledge withothers and had even set up a blog in recent years. Philpassed away on Monday, October 1, 2018.

A Memory of Tom KlekampIn the eight plus year that I knew Tom Klekamp I can
say the he was a scholar, an ar st, a good and generousman and a good friend. Tom never stopped learningand embraced knowledge with a boyish enthusiasm.In fact, on day he passed we were having a lively on-line dialogue on the geology of Lake Pontchartrain. Hewas a kind person who tried to see people as basicallygood. Many mes, I heard him take a view not his ownto see if the premises were understandable.
Tom was a natural scien st and philosopher. If hehad lived in the past, he would have been a Renaissanceman and would have been quite comfortableconversing with the natural philosophers like ReneDescartes or Charles Lyell. His mo ves were always thejoy of understanding. Tom was not a man absorbed inhimself; he shared his knowledge and understandingfreely. He was not boas ul of his accomplishmentsand was shy in pu ng them forward. He consideredthe opinions of others and was not cri cal in trying tounderstand other points of view. He was generous toa fault. Most of all Tom was a good husband, familyman and friend. Tom’s character gave me the incen veto be a be er and kinder person. In this world so fullof bad actors, the loss of a good man is very hard toaccept. I will deeply miss Tom’s good fellowship, kindnature, intelligent conversa on and joy of learning.

Tom KlekampTom Klekamp received a BS (1967) from XavierUniversity and an MS (1971) from the University of Cincinna . He began his career in 1972 as a geologistwith Shell Oil Company and in 1977 served as districtgeologist for Energy Reserves Group. In 1981 he co-founded El-Can Explora on Inc., and since then servedas director for El-Can. He was also the president of Amber Resources, L.L.C.
Tom was a board member of the Pryor-Motl GeologyScholarship Fund and in 2006 he founded theKlekamp Student Travel Fund, both for the Universityof Cincinna Department of Geology. Tom was anac ve NOGS member and served as a member of the AAPG House of Delegates (2004-07), MemorialFounda on (current), president (2009-2010), editor(2015-2016), treasurer (2002 - term unfulfi lled), andeditorial commi ee for 2005 GCAGS Transac ons.Tom was a major editor for the 2010 Oil & Gas Fieldsof South Louisiana, NOGS last publica on. He was alsothe SIPES New Orleans Chapter treasurer (two terms)and is currently editor of the New Orleans ChapterNewsle er for SPE. He is a member of AAPG-DPA,SEPM, and GSA, and is a Geological Society of Londonfellow.
He was currently the chairman of the Field Tripcommi ee and was organizing a trip to Baton Rougefor a Mississippi River model exhibit. Tom was anamateur astronomer and had a passion for studyingthe universe via his excellent telescopes.
Our friend and colleague Tom Klekamp passed away onOctober 4th, 2018. His dedica on will be very missed.

Another weekendwarrior whose enthusiasm outpaces his skill." I was quitepleasantly surprised and fi nally impressed with his designskills.
