Northwestern High School’s AFJROTC at the Cadet Change of Command
ceremony. Congratulations to Cadet Eryieal Peoples on assuming command
from Cadet D’Sean Hawkins. Both cadets will be graduating this year.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Please see Ms. Elmore in the School Counseling Office if you are interested in any of the
scholarships listed. If you need a paper application, please complete one of the
“Scholarship Request Forms” outside of Ms. Elmore’s office. Scholarships with a red
asterisk (*) do not have paper applications available.
Jamie Nichols Alumni Scholarship* Deadline: November 2, 2018
Amount: 1st place: $1,000 2nd place: $500
This scholarship is sponsored by Northwestern High School alumni, Mr. Jamie Nichols. He
will award the scholarships to a January and June graduate. Criteria: Graduating high school
senior from Rock Hill public schools with a parent or guardian who has been incarcerated for
longer than twelve months post 2005, minimum 2.9 GPA or top 50% of class, 1000 SAT score
or 21 ACT score and community/extracurricular involvement. See Ms. Elmore for an
application. All applications and required documentation must be submitted to Ms.
Elmore by the deadline.
Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship* Deadline: November 15, 2018
Amount: $4,000 - $50,000
This scholarship is sponsored by the Elks National Foundation. Criteria: U.S. citizen and
current high school seniors. You do not have to be related to a Elks member to apply. For

Cheatham-White Scholarship* Deadline: November 15, 2018
Amount: Four year scholarship to NCA&T University
This scholarship is sponsored by North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. It
is memory of Henry P. Cheatham and George H. White, two African Americans who
represented North Carolina in the United States Congress around the turn of the 20th century.

South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation Scholarship* Deadline: November 28, 2018
Amount: Not specified
This scholarship is sponsored by the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. Criteria: Seniors
in a South Carolina high school OR undergraduates in a South Carolina college/university,
2.75 GPA (on 4.0 scale), resident of South Carolina, have a competitive or recreational interest
in golf and must attend an accredited public or private four year college/university in South

South Carolina Teaching Fellows* Deadline: December 1, 2018
Amount: Up to $24,000 ($6000 per year)
This scholarship is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching. It is based
upon academic achievement, references, community and school involvement, an interview and
a writing assessment. Students must attend one of the eleven Teaching Fellows Institutions
(Anderson University, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina, College of
Charleston, Columbia College, Francis Marion University, Lander University, Newberry

College, USC-Aiken, USC-Columbia, USC Upstate and Winthrop University) in order to
qualify. There are no GPA or SAT/ACT requirements but test scores must be submitted. The
SAT code is 3680 and the ACT code is 3873. Applicants must apply online at

Lyceum Scholars Program* Deadline: December 10, 2018
Amount: $10,000
This program is sponsored by Clemson University. Students accepted to the program receive a
$10,000 scholarship to Clemson University. It is an innovative intellectual program where
accepted students study the moral, political, and economic foundations of a free society. Fpr

The Silver Pen Writing Competition Deadline: December 14, 2018
Amount: 1st Place: $1,500 2nd Place: $1,000 3rd Place: $750 4th Place: $500
This scholarship is sponsored by Wellmore of Tega Cay. It is a retirement community that has
provided this opportunity to bring the communication gap between younger and older
generations. Members at Wellmore of Tega Cay will judge the essays and choose four
winners. Criteria: Open to all high school seniors who live or attend school within 25 miles of
Wellmore of Tega Cay. Employees and children of employees at Wellmore of Tega Cay are
also eligible. There is no GPA requirement for this writing competition. See Ms. Elmore for

Dr. Ann Cain Scholarship Deadline: January 7, 2019
Amount: $1,000
This scholarship is sponsored by the Juneteenth-Rock Hill Dr. Ann Cain Scholarship
committee. Criteria: African-American high school senior graduating in June of current
school year, Rock Hill resident from the Rock Hill School District, accepted into an accredited
college/university, plan to major in Education and demonstrate commitment to public service.

Kittie M. Fairey Educational Fund Scholarship* Deadline: January 15, 2019
Amount: Not specified
The Center for Scholarship Administration, Inc. (CSA), a non-profit, independent organization
is the facilitator of this scholarship fund. Criteria: South Carolina resident, cumulative 3.0
GPA (4.0) scale, plan to attend full-time and accredited two or four year college in South
Carolina and demonstrate financial need. Apply online at www.csascholars.org
Harry Hampton Scholarship* Deadline: January 31, 2019
Amount: $5,000 (renewable for four years)
This scholarship is sponsored by the Hampton Wildlife Fund. It is for students who wish to
further their education in the natural resources discipline such as wildlife biology, fisheries
biology, forestry, marine or environmental science. The recipient will receive the scholarship
for four years as long as he/she maintains a GPR of 2.5 or above for a given academic year.

Wallace F. Pate Scholarship* Deadline: January 31, 2019
Amount: $2,500
This scholarship is sponsored by the Hampton Wildlife Fund. It is for students in the natural
resources disciplines of wildlife biology, fisheries biology, forestry or marine science.

David M. Cline Scholarship* Deadline: January 31, 2019 Amount: $2,000
This scholarship is sponsored by the Hampton Wildlife Fund. It is for students who wish to
pursue a degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or forensic science. General biology and
pre-med curriculum students pursuing a degree in forensic pathology do NOT qualify. To

James O. Thomason Scholarship* Deadline: January 31, 2019
Amount: $2,000 (renewable)
This scholarship is sponsored by the Hampton Wildlife Fund. It is for students who wish to
pursue a degree in print or photo journalism, advertising, public relations or mass
communications. The recipient will receive the scholarship for four years as long as he/she
maintains a GPA of 2.5 or above for a given academic year. To apply, visit

2019 Journalism Contest Deadline: February 1, 2019
Amount: Undergraduate tuition and fees
This scholarship is sponsored by the South Carolina Governor’s Committee on Employment of
People With Disabilities. The winner of the contest received a four-year scholarship to the
South Carolina state-supported institution of his/her choice. The scholarship pays for
undergraduate tuition and fees. Each institution has its own definition of tuition and fees.
Criteria: Must be a South Carolinian 16-19 years old, must not have entered a post-secondary
school before March 1, 2019, high school senior OR otherwise qualified to begin post-
secondary education no later than the 2019-20 school year. You do not have to have disability
to enter. See Ms. Elmore for additional information.
York County Genealogical & Historical Society Deadline: March 15, 2019
Amount: $500
This scholarship is sponsored by the York County Genealogical & Historical Society. It was
established to give financial assistance to a deserving high school senior. It is open to public
school graduates of high schools in York County (SC). Criteria: Evidence of an interest in
history or genealogy by writing a 400-500 word essay describing the activities relating to one
or both of these areas in which he/she has participated, 3.5 GPA and must have applied to an
accredited institution of higher learning. See Ms. Elmore for an application.

York Tech Presidential Scholars Program* Deadline: Not Specified
The Presidential Scholars Program at York Technical College provides a select group of high-
achieving students with a unique educational experience designed to prepare them for success
at their choice. Other benefits include: Tuition waiver for LIFE scholar recipients, textbooks
provided for Presidential Scholars courses, designated faculty mentors, exclusive leadership
opportunities and enrichment activities and an accelerated path to a university. Criteria: 3.0
GPA in high school and place into English 101 or higher and Math 110 or higher. Email

Call Me MISTER program * Deadline: Not specified
Amount: $5,000
This scholarship is designed for African-American males who are interested in pursuing a
career in education. MISTER is an acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward
Effective Role Models. Applicants must apply and be accepted to one of the participating
institutions (Anderson, Benedict, Claflin, Clemson, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina,
Greenville Tech, Midlands Tech, Morris College, South Carolina State University, Tri-County
Tech, Trident Tech or USC-Beaufort). Once you complete the college admissions application,
you must complete the Call Me Mister online referral application. This can be accessed at
www.callmemister.clemson.edu.
PALMETTO FELLOWS There will be a meeting for students who met the requirements for the early awards of
Palmetto Fellows on Thursday, November 15th at 6:00 p.m. Eligible students will receive an
invitation in the mail.
Academic Requirements 1. Score at least 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT by the November national test
administration, earn a minimum 3.5 GPA on the South Carolina Uniform Grading
Scale at the end of the junior year, and rank in the top 6% of the class at the end of
either the sophomore or junior year.
OR 2. Score at least 1400 on the SAT or 32 on the ACT by the November national test
administration and earn a minimum 40 cumulative GPA on the South Carolina
Uniform Grading Scale at the end of the junior year.

TRANSCRIPTS
Thanks to all of you who participated in College Application Day 2018. If you completed
AND submitted the form indicating where you completed college applications on that day,
your transcripts have already been mailed. You must let your school counselor know when
you need a transcript mailed. You will need to bring a business-sized envelope and a stamp
for each transcript you need mailed. Please understand that colleges/universities receive
thousands of applications every year and need time to review transcripts. Your counselor will
mail your transcript and document that it has been mailed. We cannot guarantee how long it
will take the colleges/universities to document that the transcript has been received by them.

SENIOR SUPPLIES Mr. Roth from Balfour will be on campus Thursday, November 8th for make-up senior supply
orders. He will be in the A-building lobby during all lunches. If you have not placed your
order for your cap and gown, please do so at that time.
ATTENTION: EARLY GRADUATES The Winter Graduation for students who submitted an early graduation application AND
will complete all of their graduation requirements by December is scheduled for Thursday,
January 10, 2019. It is important that you order your cap and gown ASAP to ensure you
will have them back in time for the ceremony.

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION Please see the message from Mr. Massey below regarding the Veterans’ Day Celebration
All seniors will report to the auditorium on Nov. 12th during PEAK for a special program
commemorating Veteran's Day. There will be an announcement to release seniors prior to the
start of PEAK on this day.
VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL Please see the message below from Mr. Herrington regarding virtual high school.
Please continue to work on required assignments. Semester exams will be administered
December 5th from 3:45 PM-5:30 PM in Room E106.
MAKE-UP SCHOOL Students who have more than 6 absences must recover course credit by attending Make-Up
School ($20 per session).
All students are responsible for contacting Coach Stinson to sign-up for
Make-Up School in the Media Center conference room. Dates are below:

YORK TECH APPLICATION DAY York Tech Application Day is Friday, November 16th from 1pm-3pm in A104 for any Early
Graduates (finishing in December) who plan on taking classes starting in January. If
interested, sign up with Mrs. Bybee in the School Counseling Office by Thursday, November
15th.
CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES!! Congratulations to those of you who have starting receiving college acceptance
and military appointment letters. We share in your excitement and would love to
share your good news with others. Please see Ms. Elmore to have your picture
