November 2018

Dear Supporter,

As I have done for so many years now, I want to wish you a very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season. We continue todo what we have done successfully for so many years now; save the lives of as many pigs as we are able during eachsucceeding year. This year more than 100 pigs have come to us and we have a couple months to go yet. Since manyhave come from dire situations it is so exciting to see them blossom, their faces turn to hope, their wounds from dogs orother mistreatments heal, their thin bodies begin to fill out, and some can now move more easily since they are no longereating junk food or are no longer in tiny pens from which they were never released. Many have been strays, many fromhoarding situations, some from breeders who have gratefully given up breeding and many from owners’ life changingsituations that result in their pigs coming to live with us.

You and so many like you make this possible. Your financial donations, sponsorships, bequests, bags that show up atour donation sites, many many boxes that arrive at our P O Box, art work and so important to me, the huge number ofletters and notes of encouragement when I am feeling despondent are all appreciated. And there is another whole levelof support that I am so grateful to acknowledge and am thankful for. I would like to thank our staff who have hung inthere over this incredibly long, hot summer always working with far too few helpers. Caring for so many pigs each dayis hard work and when 100 plus temperatures persist for many months it is truly a daunting task. Each day presents newchallenges that must be met to provide good care to our pigs.

Our veterinarians never turn us down. We call with a pig or pigs in need and they fit us into their busy schedule. It is socomforting knowing when we have a sick pig we have a competent group of veterinarians to take care of them. Our volunteers are wonderful. Some come to the sanctuary to work each week or more often and do many differenttasks that help to relieve me and the staff of some of our daily burdens. They often show up with treats or entire meals tohelp our day go more smoothly. Some days when we are particularly short of help or have many urgent things toaccomplish I am not sure how we would get by without them. Some of our volunteers come from far away states andstay to help us for a whole week. Others work off-site to answer our phone calls, make wonderful cards, write hundredsof thank you notes to you our supporters, sew blankets, do fundraisers and garage sales entirely on their own.

I also must mention Carrie at Adoptapigaz and Daneille and Matt from Better Piggies Rescue. Together they have foundhomes or foster homes for so many pigs on our list and have transported and arranged spays and neuters for many pigsas part of our outreach. This relieves us of a great deal of time and effort and gets pigs into homes that otherwise maynot get placed or have an uncertain ending.

I am so grateful for all the hands that help to make Ironwood a wonderfulsanctuary. Thank you all and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Mary SchanzPresident & CoFounder

severe ear infection. That wouldbe Nellie…easy to recognizebecause she always looks at you

with her head cocked like she’strying to figure you out. Amber ismissing parts of her ears and has alot of facial scars from a dogattack so she is easy to distinguishfrom her friends. Lily has only

one ear, again from a dog attack.Rambo is the super sized whitepig in Special Needs Field.Dexter is the big spotted guy inNorth Field. Another pig namedDexter that lives in the NorthwestField squeals over and over at thetop of his lungs every day atbreakfast time. You not onlyremember who he is but you learnto recognize his voice from threefields over!

Just like the troublemaker in the

taught elementary school for18 years before becoming a“pig lady”. Every August

when school started and theclassroom filled with 25+ newfaces, each child got a name tagand wore that for a few days untilI learned who was who. Some ofthem got known quickly; the classclown, the helpful one, the non-stop talker, the troublemaker, thesuper smart one, etc. Thosefalling in the middle of all thatwere remembered by personalityquirks or their looks but thenames were learned andremembered before the week wasout. Well, the pigs can’t wearname tags, so you just have to doyour best to learn their names. Some of them are easy becausethey are so unique. For instance,Churchill is the big white 550pound hog. Kind of hard toconfuse him with anyone else. When you go into Sunset Fieldthere are several larger thanaverage pigs but the biggest andpushiest is Big Charlotte. Shemakes sure that everyone knowsher! classroom that all the teachersalready seem to know byreputation, there are a handful ofpigs here that everyone learns torecognize quickly for their ownsafety. Winnie in the North Field

is one that you have to keep aneye on. Most of the time she isfine but there are moments whenshe gets the urge to bite people sowatch out for the black and whitepig whose white encircles themiddle of her body. Far EastField has two pigs to beware of,Mayzee and Stinkbug. Mayzee isthe small white girl, the onlywhite female in her field. She isfast and sneaky and has bitten

several of us. Stinkbug is a largesolid black pig. That descriptionis not very helpful since themajority of the pigs here are solidblack. With the black pigs youhave to learn body size and shape,

George and which was Walter.George is solid black but Walterhas one white front foot. I begancalling him Walter White Foot toget that ingrained in my mind.Same thing happened with twobrothers, Bob and Randy, wholook an awful lot alike. Bob has asmall patch of white hair on hisforehead while Randy’s is allblack. I had to think of thebobwhite quail and associate thatwith Bob (in my mind he is BobWhite). Tressie, one of our longtime staff members, helped me

with two brothers inthe North Field. Zeusand Titan looknothing alike, one isgray and the other isblack with whitemarkings but I hadtrouble with the

names. Tressie said she thoughtof the metal Titanium and metal isgray in color so therefore Titan isthe gray pig. It worked for me!

Liz and Janelle are sisters, bothblack with white markings. Theone with the “short white” on herfront legs is the one with the shortname, Liz. Janelle has “longwhite” on her front legs and hasthe long name. Morris in EastField looks a lot like all the otherblack pigs in his field but he has asmall mole below his right eye, so

the wrinkles on the forehead, notches on the ears….anythingthat distinguishes them fromothers. Stinkbug is the one thatwill most likely be chomping histeeth at you.Lollipop in Lil’East Field is asweet girl butwhen thesandwiches withthe pigs’medications arebeing handed outshe turns intoJaws. People being trained to feedin that field quickly learn whoLollipop is and know to keep theirfingers out of her range.

And speaking of handing out themedications, that is the numberone reason staff members mustlearn to distinguish among thepigs and learn the names. Themeds come in a peanut buttersandwich inside a Ziploc bag withthe pig’s name on it. Each fieldhas a bundle of med bags thatmust be handed out to particularpigs. It can be confusing anddifficult, so you learn tricks tohelp you remember. Everybodyhas their own techniques. Afather and son pair came in yearsago and for some reason I hadtrouble remembering which was

he is Morris the Mole. Clark,Dudley and Caroline, siblings inLil’ East are hard to tell apart.Clark is the easiest because he hasa large white ring around hisshoulders. I picture the wordsClark and large, both with “ar” inthe middle. Caroline and Dudleyare more difficult because theirwhite rings are about the samesize as are the white patches ofhair on their foreheads. Whenteaching new staff those pigs wesimply tell them to look for maleand female parts to tell thedifference. Violet and Mona aresisters, both white. Violet has ablack circle on her back whichhelps me because I think of “dotthe i” in Violet’s name. Mona issmaller too which helps until

cards of each pig, some withhelpful hints like “missing pieceof left ear”, “has split right ear”,“has deep scar on right side”, etc.Short of ear tagging everyone, anidea that Mary and I nixed right atthe beginning, it’s just a matter ofpicking out things that help youremember the pig and its name. Iuse a lot of word associationwhile other people depend oncolor markings. Everyone hastheir own learning/teachingtechnique. We share ideas to helpone another along the way.

And now for your test. Which ofthe brothers, Pedro and Miguel, has a heart on his forehead?Which of the friends, Richie andGriffin, has a folded ear? Whichof the brothers, Java and Kava, has white on his forelegs? Whichof the brothers Zipper and Buttonshas the white dot on his forehead? It’s an endless name game to beplayed with 585+ pigs atIronwood. But each pig does

have his or her own name and istreated and loved as an individual.

---Donna (I’m the one with short hairwearing glasses and a camo ballcap.)

Roxanne comes along. She’s notrelated to them but lives in thesame field and is a white girlabout Mona’s size. Mona hasseveral cute little black dots onher nose while Roxanne only hastwo. Batman and Robin are

brothers that look verymuch alike; black with whitefront legs and a white bandacross their shoulders.Batman’s white band is widerthan Robin’s. To rememberthat I think of the charactersthey are named for. Who was

Issue 85 IRONWOOD PIG SANCTUARY Page 5

www.ironwoodpigs.org [email protected]

the larger person? Batman, ofcourse. And being larger he needsa larger cape, thus the wider whiteacross his shoulders.

Sometimes if the look alikesaren’t standing together it is

almost impossible to knowwhich one you’re looking at.Sapphire and Ginny live inthe same field…Sapphire isbigger and rounder thanGinny but if they’re not sideby side, who knows! Sisters

Sharona and Londyn…Sharonahas shorter legs and Londynlonger legs but again, if theyaren’t together it’s hard to tell.Arlo and Cole…both solidblack boys that hang outtogether. Cole has morewrinkles on his forehead whichis easy to see in the summerwhen they’ve shed their hairbut once the thick winter coat isin place there goes that helpfulhint.

So when people ask us how weremember the names of all thepigs, there is no easy answer. Wedo our best and some of us knowmost or all of them. Other staffmembers are learning as they go.We do have identification booksdivided by fields with picture

Ironwood onAugust 4, 2017along with hismother Lucindaand his sisterLatoya.

They werebeing cared forby a mannamed Johnnyliving andworking at the

cotton fields about an hour’s drive from Ironwood. The owner lived in Phoenix and had asked him to carefor her pigs.

He had them in a pen but since he had not receivedany money from her for food he was feeding themfood from his garden. When he fell on hard times andhis car broke down and he was being evicted, heturned the pigs loose so they might have a chance to

survive on theirown. Remark-ably Ben and Ifound Johnny anhour beforefriends werecoming to helphim move hisbelongings andhe would havebeen gone.

The pigs werelocated about a mile from where he was living and wenever would have found them had he been gone. They were wandering near the barn where they hadbeen kept. They had water from the canals for thecotton and there was a pasture with a water trough for

some horses. The dad andone son couldnot be found.Lucinda waspregnant andJohnny saidshe had hadtwo previouslitters all ofwhich weregone exceptfor JohnnyRocket, Latoya and the baby we could not find.Lucinda was quite social and we were able to coax herinto a carrier without much difficulty but her son,

JohnnyRocket andd a u g h t e r ,Latoya, wereelusive anddifficult tosecure in acarrier sincethey had notbeen social-ized. Butthey werehungry and

we were eventually able to coax them into the penwhere they had been kept and finally got them safelyinto carriers. What a relief it was to have them safe! These are the things that keep us going.

The rest is history as they say. The three pigs all livetogether in the Main Field. While Latoya has becomepretty social, Johnny Rocket remains shy and keepshis distance, but as you see from his picture he hassettled in quite happily.

ucy and Oscar arrived at Ironwood in April of2015. They were relinquished to us becausetheir “Mom” had cancer and could no longer

care for them. For quite some time Mom came tovisit and broughtthem treats. Thepair were sort oflike Jack Spratcould eat no fatand his wife couldeat no lean. Lucywas and remains abig heavy set girland Oscar was alean boy with a

misshapen body. We dubbed him Oscar Hoo sincewhen he talked to us he always said, “Hoo Hoo.”Lucy has quite an attitude and due to theirpersonalities and physical conditions they were notput in the samefield together atfirst. However,Lucy caused somuch com-motion in herfield that shewas broughtback to a penthen laterreleased to theNortheast Field where Oscar Hoo and Carnie live.Lucy and Carnie enjoy roaming around the field to besure they do not miss out on any goodies that may bepassed out to others while Oscar Hoo is more of ahomebody.

Carnie arrived at Ironwood in October of 2015. Shewas being released to us because the HOA where shelived said the owner had to give her up. “I have a fouryear old Juliana Mini Pig and she needs a new home.”The lady who had her said Carnie was a service pigand was very friendly. She sent us a picture of thiscute baby pig. We thought great and expecting a

small pig, went to pickher up with amodest sizecarrier tobring herhome. Well,we weregreeted at thegate by a verylarge pushypig, now fouryears old. Weimmediately

knew we would have to return with a GIANT carrier.Carnitas was her name, but we quickly changed thatto Carnie. She was full of herself and still is to thisday. Beforeshe wasspayed andstill living inthe holdingpen, many astaff memberended upjumping ontoa shelter tosafety whenCarnie was inheat and outfor her yard time.

Carnie is full of personality and loves attention butalso doesn’t mind taking a swipe at you if you are notcareful and have food that she wants. We do love herthough. --Mary

hroughout the bi-monthly newsletters of2018 I have introduced

you to several different fields andtheir residents that are not usuallyincluded in our regular tours. This time we will visit a field thatwas originally built for agroup of olderpigs coming froma sanctuary inApache Junction,AZ that finallyclosed its doorsafter several years ofattempts to shut themdown due toinadequate housingand lack of medicalcare. Ironwood took small groupsof pigs from this particular rescuewhenever the owner would allowus. One of those earlier rescues inMay of 2010 was a poor old guynamed Spike whose eye wasbulging out of the socket. Weimmediately took him to see ourvet but the infection behindSpike’s eye had gone too longwithout treatment and sadly hewas euthanized to prevent furthersuffering. When we finally took

the last group of the ApacheJunction pigs in 2013 andprepared an area for them to live,it was named Spike’s Field inmemory of the one who never gotthe chance to improve his life.

Antaris and Big Momma are theonly two of the original ApacheJunction pigs still living inSpike’s Field. Both girls arearound 15-16 years of age nowand are dealing with the effects ofarthritis as most elderly pigs do.Even though both lost theirlifelong friends to age relatedissues, each has formedrelationships with other pigs whoare part of the Spike’s Field herd.Antaris hangs out with Thelma

and Delta Dawn oftensharing a house with bothgirls. Schnuddl sleeps in aneighboring shelter. BigMomma spends her timewith Rasputia who hadjoined the herd back in itsearly days as well as Peggy,Dottie and Piggy Smallswho all came in later. Forquite a long while there were

just a dozen or so pigs living inthis mid-sized field, but inSeptember of this year we added11 new pigs to bring the totalpopulation up to 22.

Spike’s Field is L shaped with sixclusters of shelters situated

under large shaderamadas. Eachcluster has poolsand mud wallows inthe center where thepigs can loungearound with oneanother and relax inthe shade. In threecorners of the L, thereare single houses set up

for those that need or want sometime to themselves likenewcomers Dexter and Woody. As with all the various fields atIronwood, the housing comes indifferent sizes so the pigs canhave the choice of being alone orsharing with their friends. Thepigs will tend to buddy up moreas the temperature gets colder.Pigs put off a lot of body heat andthey are smart enough to takeadvantage of that when needed.

Since many of the residents ofSpike’s Field are in their teens, their diet needs have becomeindividualized out of necessity.Snort, the oldest of the bunch, hasa deteriorating jaw and needs asoft mash and extra time to eat.Her best friend Squeal has ahistory of urinary tract problemsand gets served diluted juice with

his meals. Dottie eats really fastand was getting more than hershare of grain from the feedtroughs. Thelma and Princess area bit thin and need extra rations.Schnuddl was simply “toohelpful” to the person trying tofeed the herd which translates into“being a royal pain”. PiggySmalls was unable to keep upwith the others in the feed troughsdue to his mobility problems.Samson and Delilah both need

wet mashes because they chokeeasily while eating. Dexter, oneof the new additions to the herd, kept getting in fights duringmeals. For these and similarreasons, a lot of the pigs are fed inindividual pens so that they can

enjoy their meal peacefully andget the appropriate amount offood. There is a feed stationwhere the grain and hay are stored

with a table where the feeder canprepare the individual bowls forthe pigs being fed in pens. Onmost days about half of the herdgathers to watch and wait for themeal to be served. Schnuddl, being ever so helpful, stands on

the fence peering over the edge ofthe table to oversee thepreparations and offer heradvice which most often is,“Please put more grain inmy bowl!” and “Hurryup!” The pigs are verysmart and know exactlywhich pen belongs to themand will go directly thereonce the feeder heads outwith the bowls. Gates areopened and pigs pop rightin eager to get their meal. Manytimes Squeal holds back though,so his gate is left opened for himto contemplate going in while therest of the piggies get in place andget fed. He likes the idea ofsaving the best for last and willmeander inside to be the last onefed. The remainder of the herd isfed in several troughs and bowlsplaced in one section of the field.

After the grain is finished and thepigs are let out of their pens, alfalfa hay is scattered around the

field for the pigs to graze on attheir leisure. The person feedingthat field will open all the pengates while setting out hay so thepigs can come on out to getstarted. Once the hay is down thatperson goes back to gather all thefood bowls and close the gateswhile the pigs are munching on

hay. During this process Dottietakes advantage of all the gatesbeing open and dashes from onepen to the next “cleaning” all thebowls as quickly as possible

The juice isheavily diluted with water withjust enough vanilla syrup added tomake it irresistible. Squeal lovesjuice time!

Because of your donations, BigMomma and Antaris have spentthe last six years living in comfortwith space to roam, receivingmedical care when needed andenjoying the opportunity to formnumerous friendships with otherpigs. Snort and Squeal havemaintained their closerelationship while also becomingbuddies with Peggy, Delilah andSamson. Your support allowsLyla, Daisy, Precious and Princessto receive individualized care asthey grow older while stillenjoying the opportunity to live ina field with a herd. Newcomerslike Johann, Mozart, Pablo andWoody have the chance toestablish a homestead and enjoylife within a herd. And thanks toyou Schnuddl has the freedom toexpress herself and let herpersonality shine through.

before they get picked up.Naptime is at the top ofeveryone’s list once the hay isgone and tummies are full. Dottieis usually the last pig scroungingfor scraps before settling down tograb some sleep. (Are you takingnote of a pattern here with Dottie?Look at that belly!) Around thistime someone from the wateringteam arrives to clean and refill thewater bowls, pools and wallows.Depending on how hot it is on aparticular day a few of the pigswill get up to have a drink of freshwater or a quick roll in a fullwallow. If they time it just right, they can get a shower from thehose. That’s always fun andrefreshing!

Squeal gets a little extra attentionbecause of his past problems withurinary stones. He always has

diluted juice with his breakfastbut is treated to more juice aroundnoon. Squeal knows to come outand meet the person bringing hisjuice. Dottie, of course, is usuallythere sticking her nose in trying toget some too. Later in theafternoon another staff personwill bring out a peanut buttersandwich for Squeal and one forhis best friend Snort. They bothhave medications tucked insidethe treat that they take twice daily.
