November 2017

A small issue this month as events ramp down so there is not a lot of

issues to talk about. However the major automotive event is unfolding as I write on this Friday 20th October 2017, that is obviously the clo-sure of GM Holden and their plant in Elizabeth, I drove past there the other day and the big yard was absolutely full of new cars, I guess they will be the stop gap between the arrival of imported models. You may recall the new MG that was on display at our National Meeting this year, I have not seen any marketing of this product yet, I wonder why ? On a not so brighter note it is sad to see two Vale notices in this issue, I guess this is a sign of the times as we are all getting older. Well not that old that I can’t go Super Sprinting this weekend!!!

PRESIDENTS REPORT From.. .Adrian Ward

H i Members and Friends

November, WOW !! Have you started your Christmas shopping yet ?? Don't forget our Club Regalia Shop for the MG gift for that special person. Speaking of Club Regalia, Geraldine has resigned from this position after many years of dedicated service, and as I said at the October Meeting, Geraldine and Wayne have both made an out-standing contribution to our Club's func-tioning over many years. Thank you VERY much to you both.

Did you make it to the Climb To the Ea-gle ?? If so tell us about it at the Novem-ber Meeting, likewise the visit to Finch Restoration at Mt Barker. We are look-ing forward to this function. If it has Steve Spong's name on it, it will be a "first class" function.

The Kimber Run - November 12th, the premier Club event of the year. Berry, Rebecca and Dick have put lots of thought and effort into this event to make it a success. I do hope you have an entry in, you won't regret it.

November 24th at the Club Rooms sees another Dick Manning Motor Sport Function, with Club Patron Ed Ordynski introducing Stewart Bowes and his World Rally Championship ex works Toyota Celica rally car. This will be a function not to be missed. Supper pro-vided.

November 26th - Have you ever done a Steve Spong breakfast run to Ros and Alan Foweraker's at Younghusband? They are spoken of as a really top 10 out of 10 event, Rosa and I will finally be there to enjoy their wonderful hospitality.

D e c e m b e r 7 t h throught to 10th - Adelaide Rally. Make sure you do get involved in this event, in one way or another. Club member, and "Organizer Extraordinaire" Dick Manning is Deputy Clerk of Course and would sincerely appreciate anyone able to volunteer their time for road clo-sures etc for this event.

December 15th - Christmas Dinner - Don't forget to register your attendance with Bev Waters for this function, as seats are limited.

Hoping to see you soon in your MG at a Club Function. Keep on MG'ing.....!! Regards Adrian Ward President

MG Car Club of South Australia

MGC NEWS MGC mutterings from Richard Mixture, November 2017

H ello again, it's Richard here. Did you read the English Motor maga-

zine on the 4th November, 1967? Yes

that’s 50 years ago. That nice young Register Co-ordinator gave me a copy that he had received from that nice old Queenslander, you know who I mean, yes that’s right, it’s Bruce.

Well, 17 days earlier on the 18th October

at the Earls Court Motor show the MGC was released to the public and all the journos were keen to test this new six cylinder MG. The Motor article was one of the best I have read. The heading says “Softly, Softly – Stable high speed cruising; smooth, quiet engine sluggish at low revs; good roadholding; clumsy steering; good brakes and economy; seats comfortable but lack support; dated finish and controls.” The MGC they tested was NJB 649F which ap-pears to be the only time this car was written about in a magazine. The en-gine was “described in detail in our Oc-tober 21

st issue, the new engine is a

modified, lightened and seven-bearing version of the old Healey six:” “With 53% more power yet only 18% more weight the MGC can be expected to go

much quicker than the B, and it does: top speed, for ex-ample, was 118.2 m.p.h. for our hard-top two seater, com-pared with the 106.5 m.p.h. attained by the similar version of the MGB which was tested in 1964.”

Talking about the positive aspects in the article it article says “Certainly the new model amply satisfies one of the prime requirements of grand touring – the abil-ity to cruise with complete effortlessness at high speeds.” “Also GT in character are some improvements to interior safety and comfort: rubber winders for the windows, neatly recessed door locks and some welcome additional fore-and-aft adjustment for the driver’s seat.” It does say that rake adjustments for the seats are “primitive and inadequate as ever, the heater has inferior controls and remains an extra, the glove com-partment is crude ...” “Despite these faults, general comfort is quite good and there are few cars that can outpace the MGC at anything near its £1,163 price tag” You’d have to fork out around £20,000 to buy one today.

“Performance and economy ... it pulls without hesitation, pinking or vibration making for pleasant driving around town – and the quiet hum of the exhaust is the predominant noise.” Yes, we all like that noise. In fact on leaving the October Register meeting that well known spelling error, TD McNobb, thought that Dean’s BV8 sounded won-derful until he heard that beautiful six cylinder throb, (err... should we call him

November 2017

McThrob?). “With the throttle floored at, say 1,500 r.p.m., the car takes some time to build up speed until the engine reaches 3,000 r.p.m. when it begins to pull firmly and continues to do so with silky smoothness right up to 5,600 r.p.m. limit, at which it sounds quite un-strained.”

“As might be expected from a capacity increase of over a litre (compared to the MGB) the fuel consumption has gone up, but the difference is small. The over-all consumption was 19.3 m.p.g. com-pared to the 21.3 m.p.g. of the ordinary MGB and the 20.9 m.p.g. of the GT ver-sion.”

“Handling and brakes With 210 lb. more weight and an increase in front roll stiffness, pundits have been predicting tremendous under-steer for the new MGC. But in fact the weight distribution is very little changed compared to the MGB, although the car is 3½ cwt. heavier overall. Other factors which work against an increase in un-dersteer include an increase in power and the fact that the front tyres are run at 4 p.s.i. above the rears.” Motor Road tests MGC

“Servicing and accessibility The rather heavy bonnet is released by a pull knob awkwardly located on the passenger’s side. The big six-cylinder engine fits neatly into the MG com-partment and all the most important service points such as the oil filler cap, radiator filler cap, dip-stick, carburettors, brake and clutch reservoirs, coil, distributor and oil-filter are easy to get at. Servicing is needed every

3,000 miles and the requirements are similar to those of the MGB.”

Well it’s the most positive contemporary report I’ve ever read. The journo did rec-ognise the fact that he was testing a grand tourer rather than a sports car like the MGB. Either that or he had been looked after rather well by BMC.

Remember ladies and gentlemen keep ‘em tuned,

Rich

VALE NOTICES ALAN FREDERICK GRIFFIN

07/01/1933 - 18/09/2017

I t seemed appropriate that one of Alan's four current sports cars, his

road going MGTC, was centre stage outside the Funeral parlour on October 6, when a large number of the MG fra-ternity joined others in paying homage to long-standing MG member Alan Grif-fin who passed away mid September. Alan's technical draughtsman skills lured him to working in UK, where he and wife Barb motored many miles in his first MG acquisition, a late model TD Mk II. On relocating back to Australia, they raised their four sons, and it was Michael Griffin, 50, (initials MG !!) who really enlightened us at the funeral with a stunning eulogy, expanding on Alan's seemingly never-ending abilities within that garage, where he loved noth-ing more than working on his "toys". In latter years the Griffin stable at Black-wood included a restored MGTD, black MGTC, along with TC Special and Sun-b e a m A l p i n e . U n f o r t u n a t e l y , health issues in recent years precluded Alan from fully appreciating these sports cars. Possibly one of the latter Club events that the Griffins were seen at was when the white TD took part in the

MGTD 60th "Birthday Party" at the Club-rooms a few years ago. Alan supported Barb over the years in her full involvement with the Cub Scout movement, but it did seem that MGs really were a significant pre-occupation for this family. For many years Alan worked at the Ray Finch workshop where he was the model of exemplary craftsmanship. One of the real MG highlights for Barb & Alan Griffin was when they packed up their TD in a container and joined the Bahnishes and Pearsons (Snr) in taking their cars over to UK for several MG runs - a significant undertaking. Amongst the significant number of MG fraternity who paid homage to Alan at his funeral were: Wenona and Joy Pear-son, Daphne Bahnisch, Curly, Arthur Ruediger, Trevor Driver, Andrew Willing-ton, Ray Finch, John Bray, Russell Garth, David McNabb amongst many others. See you up in Octagon Heaven, Alan..... David McNabb

ber of the MGCCSA, car restorer and of Ivey Fuel Run fame. Survived by his wife Elaine.

Here is Alan Griffin sitting in his recently acquired PA, chassis 1425

which has the rather unique feature of having a "suicide" drivers door

and a non-suicide passenger door. This car was imported by Lanes Mo-

been made in NSW. The first owner was P.R. Black who I have not come

across before and Alan is the only other known owner. Registration

MGA MAGNETTE NEWS From...Sandra Cardnell

MGA/MAGNETTE REGISTER MEET-ING HELD AT THE MG CAR CLUB

CLUBROOMS ON 21

ST SEPTEMBER 2017

We met at the Clubrooms instead of the usual member’s garage this month. 22 members came along and there were 6 MGA’s, including the British Racing Green 1500 owned by Gary and Velli Algate. This was displayed in the back annexe because Gary and Velli have recently had a new hood fitted. Al-though black is the original colour for the model, they went with the tan stayfast canvas. It looks really good and just needs a little settling in time before go-ing back to Frank Spencer (yes that’s right, but not the one from Some Moth-ers Do Hav’em) at Greenacres for some tightening and other adjustments. Thank you to Gary and Velli for bringing the A to the meeting for us to check out the hood.

Because a couple of MGA 50th Anniver-

sary badges were not picked up, I have four spares if anyone is interested - $55 (incl GST).

Allan Semmler (MGA Twin Cam) an-nounced that he is winding up his engi-

neering business, but will retain some equipment at the Superloc premises. He had made a part for Scott Stephen-son’s car - it looked like a disc with a groove around the outside – and I can’t remember what it was called. He is will-ing to undertake manufacturing small parts for members if they are unable to source parts elsewhere (he mentioned charging, but it would not be exhorbi-tant, just enough for him to keep his hand in).

Geraldine advised that the Vintage Collingrove on 1

st October would see

November 2017

Motorsport Mutterings From Murray Stephenson

T he 2017 club motorsport year has finished and we’ve had a great year

of sprints, hillclimbs and motorkhanas as well as our own National Meeting and the Challenge in Victoria. The first draft of the 2018 CAMS calen-dar is out and we are working through the date clashes and venue availability but it should be another fun year. The usual mix of local events will be joined by a Nat Meet in Tassie and a Chal-lenge in SA. So it’s now time to get those cars tidied up and ready to go for another full season. Keep watching the calendar on the web-site but the following events may be of interest.

November 10 to 12 – Legend of the Lakes

A number of MGCC members are going to Mount Gambier to compete in the Legend of the Lakes.

It’s a great event run over two or three days near the centre of Mount Gambier. It’s worth a look if you have the time for a run to the Mount.

Friday 8 December – Shannons Adelaide Rally

MGCC SA is managing the rally stages on the Friday at Mallala. It will be two stages, a motorkhana type course on the skidpan and a sprint on the circuit. We will be running the stages and mar-shalling spectators and competitors. If you are able to assist there may still be time to go to and register for the Friday with MG Car Club. All helpers will be given a free pass to the Adelaide Mo-torsport Festival for the Saturday and Sunday in Victoria Park.

VIEWING THE BAY TO BIRDWOOD From..Steve Spong

Breakfast Run - Sunday 24th September 2017

I n line with requests for the Septem-ber Breakfast Run to take the form of

a viewing of the Bay to Birdwood Classic Car Parade, the resultant turn out was very disappointing as evidenced below. Others may well have set up their own viewing posts elsewhere along the route but the location for the Club was posted on the website.

It was not a brilliant day weather wise but it was at least dry; and there was a terrific display and range of cars to be waved past.

Well done however to those in the Club who took part in this year's run itself.

MGB REGISTER EVENT From...Steve Spong

Sunday 1st October 2017 Victor Harbor

D ue to the efforts of Wendy Sauer, the MGCCSA were invited by the

Victor Harbor Council and the Ocean Street Committee to arrange a display of MGs as a part of their "International Coffee Day" celebrations. So our thanks to Wendy in helping promote the Club.

This was a town event which included an artisan market, art display and work-shops, buskers, shopping and of course a coffee competition to find the best place in town. Plus we had a visit from the Steam Ranger and second steam loco.

Although the day was cold and overcast it remained dry and our cars did attract a lot of public interest, including one from the Victor Harbor "Town Crier", a local volunteer who promotes tourism.

Organised through the MGB Register, a total of 31 various MGs were displayed in the centre of town on Warland Re-serve. This display included not only MGCC members but also fellow MG owners invited from the Victor Harbor "Historic Motor Vehicles Club", with whom we have participated with at vari-ous events over the years, plus some

local MG owners who are yet to join any car club but who were hopefully inspired by the day. Apologies to any who did not get to record their attendance.

Amongst the cars on display was a local time warp 1969 MGB. This world beater had been unregistered since new and displayed a true milage of only some 600 miles. (See photo befow)

So many thanks to all Club Members who displayed their cars and of course to those locals who supported the event with their cars, and to those who helped with the setting up and marshalling. Thanks too to the various MGCCSA members who came along in support but were unable to bring their MGs, and

MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS From ..Diane Holmes

MG Car Club of South Australia

Thursday 12 October, 2017.

T he run to the Riverside Hotel at Tailem bend was an opportunity to

blow the cobwebs out of our cars, start-ing out from the Wallis Theatre at Mt Barker for coffee where David signed us in and then returned home, everyone then took off to Tailem Bend via the old highway through Nairne, Kanmantoo, Callington etc; We zipped onto the freeway instead of going through Murray Bridge, I think a lot of people actually went straight down the freeway as there was already a good crowd when we arrived and it was a good turn out of members, the meals were pretty good then it was off home on the freeway. This was one time I didn’t take my cam-era so there are no photos for the run. An interesting footnote, the attached motel is fully booked already for the Su-per Car event at the Bend Racing Circuit 24-26 August 2018 !!! Editor…….

WELCOME TO THE PAECH FARM

FOR 9 NOVEMBER OUR LAST RUN FOR 2017.

This will be a return visit for some mem-bers as we visited there in 2010. Steve & Bev Paech are the present owners, but the property has been in the family for four generations since 1908 near Wistow / MtBarker. They have a won-derful collection of memorabilia, which they have been collecting since 1970. The exhibits ranged from stationary en-gines, tools, railway items, documents, books, working exhibits & much more for the men. The ladies can enjoy looking at

the beautiful handmade gowns dating back to the 1900’s as well as jewellery, personal items, documents, lacework, tatting & recipe books . . .all with a story. We are welcome to wander through the rooms of the home & to relax & enjoy the glorious spring garden.

The barbecue lunch & salads will be followed by the tour & ending with the afternoon tea. Bev is a very good cook & the memory of the food lingers with me.

There is no report from the lunch to Tailem Bend as I couldn’t make it due to a cold & David checked all the members in at Mt.Barker. The Paech’s can cater for more mem-bers this visit – no need to bring chairs, but still the need to bring your own alcohol. Booking a couple of weeks ahead would be ideal. We will be meeting at the Crafers Hotel at 10.30am & departing 11.30am. PLEASE BOOK EARLIER THIS MONTH if you would like to partici-pate. Diane & David Holmes email [email protected] or phone 8336 4557.

PRE-WAR & T REGISTER From...John Bray

THE BIG NIGHT OUT IN PAECHTOWN.

5 October 2017

A s was expected it was a big turnout in the big shed of Peter & Bronwyn

Micklem on a coolish night , ideally suited for the “burn” up through Hahndorf to their home at Paechtown. Thankyou to Peter & Bronwyn for a great supper , hot fire and heaps of seats in the shed. The big toys had been moved out to accommodate the en-thralled members of which 37 signed in with 13 T Types and 1 Y Saloon to-gether with other MG cars of later and more comfortable vintage. Apologies. Received from M Lyons (coming good), A Pearson, I Buckley, J Tamke, A Bate, R Jellet & M & J Green-wood. Mike Greenwood rang me to say that his daughter had died suddenly the week before leaving two young children which of course is a tragedy to the whole fam-ily, our thoughts and condolences went out to Mike and Jan for their loss. Vale. Long standing member Alan Grif-fin passed away mid September after a short illness in care at Kalyara Care Fa-cility at Belair. David Mc Nabb has penned a tribute to Alan for the maga-zine, our condolences once again go out

to Barbara and the boys of which Mi-chael and David have had involvement with the car club over many years with their father Alan and his cars. Apology. To the” brown baron “ Mozza Linehan for leading him into the Crafers Park N Ride the wrong way against the tide of the buses, well the horn was ex-ceptionally laudible under the circum-stance, hate to admit it but I got it wrong. The Vicar of Dribbly. A prominent member of our group who was recently at the Goodwood Revival this year “confessed “ to the meeting that dress-ing up was on his agenda and in fact that he had fashioned a collar of the faith from an ice cream container and masqueraded as the local vicar, all good fun indeed for a while , however he was found wanting when challenged by a real and authentic man of the cloth. Tutt tutt Peter C best stick with the tweed jacket and deer stalker in the NA I sug-gest. ps: More tea Vicar ? Car Sales . com : Well, there was a bit of trading transacted at the meeting, a most attractive TD changed hands very very quickly, the new owner apparently overcome by the emotion of the night and his prayers with a little help from the “vicar” were answered and the deal done !

November 2017

Quote: When a man opens a car door for his wife, It’s either a new car or a new wife. HRH Prince Phillip General Business: The very observant Russell Garth commented that our “serial pest” one John Neilson was spot-ted on TV at the MCG Grand Final pres-entation , what an amazing fact, he bobs up everywhere. Good to see John at our meetings again cause you got to know that I am lining him up for a visit one night next year to see the 50 year owned MG TC. Russ produced a scrap book on MG going way back in the club with some interesting facts on our former racing identity Dean Hosking who still holds a record in a Cooper Climax years back. Geraldine Hough gave a briefing of the filming in Adelaide of the formula 1 car and others through Henley Beach road underpass (Bakewell Bridge) for the Adelaide Motor Sport Festival coming on 7 December, vision is going onto Face-book. Ian Hobbs looking for a photo of an MGA Mk11 block, why I am not sure but he will respond. Peter Auld has a genuine 1250 wheel , shallow dish and a 19 inch pre-war wheel 24/24 lacing.

Arthur and Bazzica are off to Yamba with the ND & J2 for the MMM rally, pho-tos by Terry Wright of Arthur’s ND at Collingrove Hillclimb were on display, Terry actually got a ride with Arthur up the hill, how exciting for 007. Don Walks reported on his SA’s pro-gress and was delighted that Graham Loader was in the right place at the right time to collect a couple of brackets and deliver them to him saving a heap on DHL freight into Goolwa Beach. Peter Shipside. Shippy still talking about the WA Tickford sold in Vic. But wants to start his own society with Don Walks at Goolwa. Can you believe, the “GT Boys “ ? Sounds like a couple of overaged musicians to me. John Davies and the XU1 Torana rip-ping up the hill got some air play, but like the old guys sitting in the dress cir-cle I could not hear all of it, apologies John. Hearing loop: Investigations are under-way to source an electronic hearing loop for those who sit in the front row behind the Coordinator General at future meet-ings, it would be simpler to supply bat-teries for hearing aids I think, however if that fails I will yell louder. More speed Vicar ? Talking about Motor Sport Festival, our self confessed

Vicar took on the 3 TC’s on the freeway going home in the dead of night, the for-mer Peter Ivy TD rebuilt by the mercurial Ray Finch , really left us for dead, the new owner of that high speed vehicle is going to have his work cut out holding it in check, hope that he has told his wife about the purchase. I cannot name him at this stage just in case as it was an instantaneous purchase.

Next Meeting. Traditionally November , Hotel dinner. This year it is the STANLEY BRIDGE HOTEL, Verdun ( Photo of venue oppo-site) ust off the freeway Hahndorf Turn-off 7.00pm, we have a group booking. Meet at the Crafers Park N Ride at 6.15pm for the run leaving at 6.30 via Stirling, Aldgate, Bridgewater, German-town Hill into Verdun. Menu will be emailed prior to 2 November. December . The long awaited visit to the Southern Connection, Donald Walker’s shed and cars is on SUNDAY 10 December , details to be advised, will be leaving from a designated location at about 8.30am at this stage to Goolwa Beach.

Hopefully there will be a further visit on the way home over at Strathalbyn. One more, Home cooking; Where most men think their wives are ! Anon. That’s about it for October, hope to see you at the pub dinner Nov 2 , Stanley Bridge Verdun.

John Bray, Coordinator General & Supreme Ruler of the Register.
