As Boating Season Winds Down, Prepare Your Safety Gear For 2018Before stowing watercraft, inspect safety and mechanical equipment.

Fall marks the end of boating season

for many in Northern Arizona and as owners prepare to stow their watercraft until the spring, it’s an ideal time to in-spect life jackets, safety gear and me-chanical equipment. Getting repairs done in the offseason and taking stock of safety equipment will help ensure a successful start to the 2018 boating season — and it’ll give you a few more quality hours with the boat before storing it.

“Take advantage of the end of the boating season to look for anything that may need repairing and to take inventory of life jackets and other safety gear,” said Josh Hoffman, boating-safety education

coordinator for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. “By doing this now, you will have a head start in the spring and can make sure all the mechanical equipment is working properly and that all safety gear is stored correctly.”

The following steps will help ensure the boat or watercraft is stored properly for next year and you’re ready to safely hit the water in 2018:

1. Inspect life jackets for any rips, tears, mold, mildew and worn areas. Also check to see whether the label is still readable before storing life jackets in a dry location. Arizona’s climate is tough on life jackets, and on average they need

3. As ev-ery watercraft owner should do every time he or she leaves the lake, pull the vessel’s drain plug, and dry and clean the hull. Doing so helps prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species like quagga mus-sels.

4. of dings, pitting, cracks and distortion, and that they are secured properly. Inspect the hull for blisters, distortions and cracks.

5. for any leaks or damages, giving special attention to fuel lines and connections. Damaged fuel hoses could either be cracked, brittle or soft. Also ensure the engine exhaust and ventilation systems are function-ing properly. As with fuel lines, inspect all belts, cables and hoses that may have been damaged during the season. Ensure

Lake Havasu Marine Association Named For Prestigious AZGF Award Of Excellence

The Lake Havasu Marine Association

prestigious Arizona Game and Fish De-partment Award for Ex-cellence.

Marine Asso-ciation President Jim Salscheider was nominated this year for the award by the Yuma Director of Arizona Game and Fish, Pat Barber. Barber cited the Marine Association’s efforts in maintaining and

tunities, wildlife conservation, and recre-ational boating safety as key elements for winning the award recognition. Barber also noted the association’s continuing

vasive species.

An Asset To Havasu Community“They’ve been a great partner for us,

and an asset to the Havasu community,” Barber said. “They’ve never failed to step up when asked, and sometimes we don’t even have to ask. They work hard and take their contributions seriously…they’re a real asset.”

According to Barber, the Award for Excellence has been given to commu-nities throughout Arizona for several

which a Havasu based organization has been a recipient.

Aids In ConservationSince 2005 the Marine Association has

taken initiative in aiding environmental agencies against invasive species, con-serving native species and enhancing rec-reational opportunities on Lake Havasu. The group has been instrumental in the construction of launch ramps, launched a cooperative boating registration program with Game and Fish and began an un-

A millennial offers tips for getting younger boaters on the water.

Both boaters and those who rely on boating to make a living lament that there doesn’t seem to be as many younger boat-ers these days. The statistics back that up. According to the recently published BoatUS Magazine feature “Why Aren’t Millennials Buying Boats?” (October 2017), approximately 41 percent fewer 20- to 39-year-olds owned boats in 2015 than in 2005. And while millennials may boat about as much as their parents did,

Why Aren’t Millennials Buying Boats?

McGlynn, who is a professional manage-ment consultant, may have some answers.

Lower incomes, student debt, lack of technical knowledge or mechanical ex-perience, and a culture shift that eschews conventional ownership in favor of rent-ing take their toll on millennial (born be-tween 1982 and 2000) boat ownership.

“Young people are not giving up on boat-ing, just going about it in a different way: chartering, borrowing, and riding along,” says McGlynn, a live-aboard who recent-

along with her husband, Robin. While owning a boat can be pricey,

McGlynn reports, “I’ve met a number of

get out on the water without breaking the bank, such as millennials who are partici-pating in cooperatives, who share a boat among friends, or who live aboard a boat instead of renting pricey apartments in major American waterfront cities. Several boaters interviewed for the story men-tioned the increasing popularity of wake boats, in part because they carry more people and they’re fun.”

McGlynn ultimately writes that, in general, millennials prefer the sharing economy. She asks, why would you buy a ski house, when all you have to do is Airbnb it? She suggests it’s the same with boats. “20- to 39-year-olds love boating for the same reasons their parents did. They see it as an opportunity to socialize, create family memories, and adventures, and unplug from work. Boating has the potential for a watershed moment among millennials.”

The BoatUS Magazine feature also in-cludes creative tips on how young people

“Jim could have easily spent the past decade focused on how to get more boats sold and on the waters of Lake Havasu,

a broader vision,” commented Barber in his nomination of the Marine Associa-tion and Salscheider for the award.

Salscheider Commited To Education, Responsibility

“But instead he recognized the ben--

nerships with government agencies, local businesses and members of the public, and rallied Marine Association volun-teers to spread the message that the free-dom to boat comes with a commitment to boater education and personal respon-sibly.”

Salscheider remarked that credit for the Marine Association’s accomplish-ments extended far beyond himself.

“This has been a testament to our board of directors for its leadership, and a testament to our volunteers who have done all the work,” Salscheider said.

“Almost 10 years ago, when I took over the Marine Association, we agreed that whatever happened, we would have a seat at the table with agencies that make rules and regulations for boating on the lake,;I believe this tells us we’ve succeeded in doing that.”

‘OOPS MOMENTS’ — Boat hooks and brush handles can accidentally scratch and mar fine boat finishes. Shurhold Industries’ patented Handle Mate PFD slips over the aluminum shaft of its Telescoping and Fixed Length Handles to protect gelcoat, paint and chrome. And, because those “oops moments” happen, like dropping the tool overboard, the innovative device keeps it floating for easy retrieval.

Don’t Miss Deadline To Add Ice/Freeze Coverage To Your Boat’s Insurance Policy

In the winter, in northern states and in northern portions of other states where freezing temperatures are the norm, boat-ers who put their boats into heated indoor storage have it made. With their boats warm and dry, they may have little con-cern for freeze-related damage to their engines.

Winter storms can knock out power and heat, however, leading to ice forming inside the engine block and catastrophic engine failure. And, if a boat’s engine is winterized by a do-it-yourselfer and freeze damage occurs, the owner could be on the hook for the damage. So what can you do to protect your boat over the

winter?Boat Owners Association of The Unit-

ed States (BoatUS) says ice-and-freeze coverage may be a smart option. Inex-pensive and typically offered as a policy “rider” to boats stored in cold climates, it’s something to consider. BoatUS Ma-rine Insurance offers the add-on coverage for as little as $25, but also advises that most insurers won’t offer the coverage once temperatures get cold, usually the end of October, so check with your in-surer now.

Said BoatUS Vice President of Under-writing Mike Pellerin, “All it takes is a falling tree limb to take out power to a

Improve Your

AccuracyBY JOHN ANDERSON

We shooters are all alike: No matter how close our groups are, we wish they were closer. We wish we shot better at long range, or on the move, or in low light, or from a different position, or with our non-dominant hand — well, you get

We all know that practice is the best way to improve our accuracy, but not all of us have the time to get to the range as often as we should, and the range can be pricey even with a membership. For some of us, the range is a good distance from our job or our home, making practice even less practical. Fortunately, there are

LaserLyteI’ve written before about the LaserLyte

that Margie gave me for Christmas. That thing is great! What I really like it for is to practice shooting on the move, or while the target is moving. I’ll have Margie hold the target and rush down the hall toward me, or dart from side to side in and out of different doorways. Or I’ll have her pre-tend to crash through the front door and attack me while I’m sitting in my chair.

You would be absolutely amazed at how long it takes you to grab a weapon

those conditions, even though you are ex-pecting it. That 21-foot rule is a joke.

Firing Accurately Is KeyIn case you’re not aware of what that

is: Years ago a guy did an experiment to see how far away an attacker could be in order to get to you and stab you before you could get your gun out and shoot him. The “rule” he came up with was 21 feet away.

However, the people being attacked were expecting it, and they had open-car-ry holsters. In real life, I bet if you were just strolling down the street or through the mall, an attacker 50 feet away could reach you before you became aware of

The MantisX attaches to the rail of your gun and works whether you have it facing forward or backward. You won’t even notice it’s there.

There are several different screens in the app to show you what your mistakes are, how to correct them, how you’re doing over time, etc.

This is the traditional error target, showing you what is probably making you miss.

Why Am I Missing? When Margie is rushing at me down

the blue gun at the LaserLyte target she’s holding, and aiming at an area about 7 inches across. When I miss (more often than I care to admit), I have no idea why I’m missing — am I pulling to the left or right? Shooting too high? Too low? What the heck is going on?

The LaserLyte is helping both Margie and me to be better shots, and it’s also giv-ing us lots of practice drawing from con-cealment, but we still needed more help.

You can check out the LaserLyte sys-tem at www.laserlyte.com.

MantisXI’m sure you’ve seen the error chart

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE THE OUTDOORS

There Are So Many Useful Gifts To Enhance Their AdventuresBY MARGIE ANDERSON

Before you know it, the holidays will be upon us and we’ll all be scrambling

love. If someone you love also loves the outdoors, here are some ideas that are sure to please.

Good Maps Are EssentialBuild Your Own

-ing, hunting, off-roading, RV-ing, or geo-caching, good maps are essential. The best way to get the perfect map is to visit MyTopo.com and build your own. These are especially great for hunters because you can choose the hunt unit you prefer and get a detailed topo map of the entire unit on one sheet.

You can also choose from a variety of sizes, and you can choose layers as well — such as land ownership, etc. The price depends on the size you choose, but the hunt unit maps are just under $35. For

with a gps built in, there is no subsitute for being able to see the entire lake at a

strategy. Kayakers and any one who just loves

maps invaluable. Go to omnimap.com to

There Are Map Apps TooI have downloaded a complete set of

National Forest Maps

like camping, hiking, and exploring is a set of National Forest maps. You can buy them online or you can go to a Forest Ser-vice Ranger Station and buy them.

These maps include a ton of informa-tion, such as camping, boating, snow ski

the ones you need for each trip. When you open the maps, you see where you are in real time, which helps immensely with navigation.

We use this constantly, and there is a version for the ipad as well, but if you want to see yourself on the map you’ll need an iPad that is cellular capable. You don’t have to actually have cell service on it, but it won’t have GPS if it isn’t cell capable.

There are many other map apps to be had, but you have to be careful – some charge a monthly fee and unless you’re going to use all the special features, it re-ally isn’t worth it. That being said, travel-ers often use an iPad or a small laptop for maps and other information, or just to use whenever they check into a hotel.

For Hikers: A Small DaypackIf a hiking newbie is on your list, why

not buy them a small daypack with a hy-dration bladder? I recently found one on Groupon for under $25. You can gift it as is, or put some small essentials inside.

plies, survival bandana, a pocket knife, insect repellent sheets, sunscreen packets, and a couple of books of hiking guides for the areas my new hiker likes to visit. You can tailor the bag to suit the person you’re giving it to, and it’s sure to be a hit.

Wrap A Laptop Or TabletOne thing that really makes a

laptop or tablet great for travel is a GRID IT Wrap Sleeve. They come in a variety of sizes and allow you to keep essen-tials right where you need them – with the laptop or tab-let. The GRID-IT for a 10-inch tablet is around $22,

mosquitoes. The perfect solution to that is the 2-in-1 LED USB Rechargeable Waterproof Mosquito Killer Bug Zapper Light Lantern. That’s a really big name for such a small item — it actually weighs less than half a pound and is only 3.5 x 5 inches.

You can set the light at 20, 50, or 100 percent depending on the situation, and it attracts and zaps mosquitoes and other an-noying insects to give you up to a 16x16 foot bug-free zone. It’s also completely waterproof so you can rinse it clean, and it has a cage to protect you from the zapper.

A single charge can last 6 to 20 hours depending on the light brightness you select, and it can be hung or stood on a surface. This is perfect for campers, RV-

charging cord is included, and the lantern is under $25. You can get one at bulb-america.com.

GoSun Go Is An Excellent GiftThe GoSun Go Solar Stove is still in

the project stage, but estimated delivery will be April of 2018. This is one of the best gifts you could give a camper, RV-er, or even a prepper — it’s a portable so-lar oven that holds up to 14 ounces and can reach temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It cooks most meals in 20-30 minutes and stays hot for hours. Use it to boil water for your instant meals or to make coffee too.

If you go to kickstarter.com and pledge

GoSun Go Stove when they ship. You can buy larger GoSun Stoves right now — the GoSun Sport is $279 and will bake, roast, or steam a meal for two people in min-utes, using just the power of the sun.

In our beautiful state of Arizona, where we are blessed with so much sunshine, this stove is ideal. The Sport folds down to a 7.5-pound package, perfect for car camping or an RV. It would also be great

trips. Check them out at gosunstove.com.

I pick them up at Sportsman’s Ware-house for around $8 each. In fact, almost every time I’m there I pick up a couple. I’ve eaten them and they are all delicious. Just add hot water and wait a few min-

RV/Land CruisingFALL CAMPING AT THE LAKE

Enjoy The Beautiful Weather And Outdoor Life

The weather is cooling down, but lucky for us in Arizona we aren’t about to be buried in snow. In fact for us, the most beautiful time of year is now set-tling in. What’s more fun in the fall than camping? So, whether you’ll be pitching a tent or lounging in an RV, there’s very little preparation to get ready for amazing desert sunsets and outdoor life.

Getting Ready For CampingAside from making sure you have the

lights, bug repellant, and the like), you will also want to make sure you are pack-ing plenty of water and sunscreen (yes, even in the fall).

Enjoying The Desert SafelyHave we mentioned having plenty of

water even during the fall? Okay, so the other things to be aware of when embark-ing on a camping journey in the desert include being familiar with snakes, scor-pions, lizards and the like. Know how to spot them and how to avoid them. Re-member it’s their home, not yours.

Also, it’s important to have a GPS tracking device of some sort on you at all times when choosing to hike. Also, remember that the desert cools down substantially at night; so pack layers of

clothing for comfort.

Camping-Related ActivitiesWhile sitting around enjoying adult

beverages and s’mores is the ideal camp-ing activity, here in the desert we also have numerous activities that are greatly enjoyable. For example, the star gazing in the deep darkness of the desert is sec-ond to none.

When camping at a lake, like Roo-sevelt Lake, you can also enjoy water sports during the day including kayaking, wakeboarding, and tubing. Hiking is a fa-vorite pastime of Arizonans and there are trails (covered and uncovered) for your enjoyment.

At the end of it all, camping is an af-fordable and healthful way to enjoy some family time. Get out there and enjoy that beautiful fall weather!

My Off-Road Experience: Lessons LearnedEditor’s Note: The story that follows

(and is continued on www.westernout-doortimes.com) explains how these les-sons became crucial for Tonya and her husband.

BY TONYA GARDNER

My husband and I recently purchased a UTV as we wanted to be able to spend time together and experience new things together. We had taken it out for a few rides and had a great time, but thought the trails we had gone on were way easier than we anticipated.

It Started WellWe did a few easy and moderately

rated trails that we could have done with our car. We decided to try a new trail:

trail, learning that others had taken ve-

our UTV.

would have no problems. We travel from

the Beeline Highway. There is a little trail that cuts back to the west with a parking lot.

We parked our truck, unloaded the UTV, got our supplies ready, and we were all set for a great day of exploring.

Then The Doubts BeginWe downloaded a map of the trail we

wanted to follow from the Web site with the reviews we had read. There was a sign posted “Road Closed: Bridge Out Ahead”. We noticed the map did not fol-low the trail that led to the closed bridge, so we backed up to follow the trail on the interactive map.

As we continued down the trail, we

cult to pass, but we made it. After we got

back out. We thought we were good to go, since it was a loop we knew we wouldn’t have to go back through the rocks we had just passed. Gosh, were we wrong!

We were determined to make it to

other people had said the trail was pretty easy. The farther we went, the crazier the trail got. Keep in mind we are fairly new to off-roading in Arizona.

We were getting really close to the mine on the interactive map, so we kept moving forward. There were times I had to get out of the UTV and guide my hus-band as to how to maneuver through the rocks and ruts in the trail that cut back and forth. The ruts were made from rain run-ning down the trail.

Enter Large BouldersWe got to the bottom of a hill and fol-

lowed the trail to the left. We stopped when we saw some large boulders in the trail. We backed up and looked to see if there were other trails we could take be-cause we were unsure we could make the turn through the boulders.

We discussed how we did not want to have to go all the way back up the steep mile long hill we had just come down. We also looked at all of the maps we had with us, to see if another trail was there, only to discover the trail we had taken was not on any other maps, except the one we had downloaded.

And now the “fun” begins: Their ad-venture (misadventure?) is continued on www.westernoutdoortimes.com.

United States public holiday, observed annu-ally on November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in

the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, in-

cluding Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holi-

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, a U.S. public holi-day in May; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veter-ans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service. It is also not to be confused with Armed Forc-es Day, a minor U.S. remembrance that

honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

We checked another rocky shoreline to see if this was the only spot they were hitting. No, smallmouth bass turned on everywhere we tried from 2-4 p.m. Fish caught immediately went from none to too many.

This reminds me so much of spring-

best for us but that feeding period may enlarge as weather continues to stabilize and the full moon continues to “wayne”.

exhibited the same behavior. They did not bite in the morning but when the same

I suspect the same timing pattern will

A Close Relationship “There has always been a close re-

lationship among individuals who en-

hunting and camping; it’s just a matter of the time of year. Southwest off-roading and RVing are the recreations of choice in fall and winter that give-way to boat-ing and watersports in spring and summer and no-where in the country is that fact more evident than Lake Havasu City.

“Motorsports and outdoor recreation are a natural cross-over blend of similar interests. Because of that, we plan to capture the spirit of these complementa-ry markets by offering an opportunity to browse, compare, and shop for the latest and greatest in off-road vehicles, trucks, Jeeps, sand cars, ATVs, UTVs, 4 X 4s, buggies, rock crawlers, motorcycles, electric vehicles, RVs, toy haulers, travel trailers, boats, pontoons, kayaks, paddle-

scooters, golf cars, camping equipment, and all related accessory products and services in one convenient place.

There’s Room For Everybody“We expect our exhibitor list to rep-

resent a mixture of local, regional and national brands,” continued Brown. “There’s room for everybody at this Expo,

no matter how big or small. And what’s so appealing about the Windsor 4 venue is that it affords an enormous space to prop-erly display these extraordinary products, and in some cases, even demo them. It’s the perfect environment at the right time of year for an outdoor recreation Expo of this kind.”

Additions/Renewals This YearMaking it even better in 2017 is the

recent renovation and expansion of the Windsor 4 special-event area with a brand new seven-lane launch ramp and additional parking lot. “We have plenty of room to expand the Expo and accom-modate more RVs and boats than ever be-fore,” said Brown.

“We’re also adding a couple of new di-mensions to the Expo this year, which all guests should enjoy — boats in-water at the demo dock ready to take prospective customers for a ride before they make a

a ‘Hot Wheels’ racetrack where kids and

adults can choose their favorite cars and enter the competition to win great prizes.

“And, thanks to the renewed partici-pation of the Lake Havasu Hobie kayak dealer, Southwest Kayaks, the popular Lake Havasu Paddlefest is returning to the event agenda on the white-sand beach of Windsor 4 on Saturday and Sunday. Paddlefest is open to everything with a paddle: kayaks, paddleboards, outriggers and canoes. It is a great opportunity for people of all ages to share their passion of non-motorized water sports. Paddlefest

poker run, games, activities, tips from paddling experts and demo opportunities to try the latest products.

Come By Boat”Boaters are also encouraged to come

to the Expo by boat. The new Windsor 4 London Bridge Channel Beach adjacent to the Kings View condos is now open and available for boaters to beach their boats. The beach will accommodate over 50 boats and is less than a two-minute walk into the Expo. There’s no charge for beach parking; normal Expo admission prices will prevail.”

More Details/InformationThe Sand - Water - RV Expo will be

open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18 and on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 9 p.m. to 3 p.m. Adult admis-sion is only $5.00, children 6 and under are free and on-site parking is also free. Food, beverage and beer garden conces-sions are on-site; dogs are okay on leash. The Lake Havasu State Park, Windsor 4 venue is located on London Bridge Road approximately one-half mile north of the London Bridge directly behind the Hamp-ton Inn.
