Fall Candlelight Dinner In the Myers Inn
B.W.A.H.S. cooks are preparing a traditionalhomemade fall Candlelight dinner to serve in the MyersInn Museum at 6 p.m. Saturday, November 18.
The menu will include turkey and dressing, marinatedbeans, mashed potatoes and gravy, wilted salad withbacon dressing, cranberry relish and pie for dessert.
Richard Helwig will present Thomas Nast’s Civil WarEra Santa for a bit of history.
Seating is limited so be sure to get your tickets early bycalling Damon at 614-745-4375.

Celebration was Very Successful
The house was very well decorated inside and out. Theweather was perfect.
Many thanks to Tim and Amy Welsh for opening theirhome and grounds to the public as a fund raiser for theBig Walnut Area Historical Society. Although the finaltally is not in on the funds, all who worked on the daydeclared it a success.
Fay Armstrong, a descendent ofthe builder of the Inn camefrom Washington D.C. to shareher family history in her great-great-grandfather’s home.

Ground Observer Corps
Suzanne Allen will provide the program on the GroundObserver Corps (GOC) for Big Walnut Area HistoricalSociety at 7:30, Tuesday, November 14, in the MyersInn Meeting Room. The program is free. Guests arewelcome.
During World War II, there were 1.5 million civilianobservers at 14,000 coastal observation posts to searchfor German and Japanese aircraft. That program endedin 1944.
During the Korean War in 1950, Continental AirCommander Ennis Whithead proposed formation of a160,000 civilians into a Ground Observer Corps tooperate 8,000 observation posts scattered in gapsbetween the radar network sites. By 1951 there were210,000 GOC volunteers manning the 8,000 posts butwhen the were tested on quickness of getting thesighting info to the twenty six filter centers they werefound wanting. They revised the plan again and calledit Operation Skywatch in 1952. By the late 1950s, radar

While Allen was collecting data for her memory books,some of the people recalled the original program. When she compiled the second book, Don Bryant gaveher many names and information to include in her book. She contacted these people and put their storied in“More about our past in the Big Walnut Community.
Allen, a Big Walnut School Middle School teacher,spent most of her childhood in the community. Justbefore her mother, Maxine Link, died she gave Suzannea blank family history and asked her to do the familygenealogy like she did the pedigrees on her horses. A few years later, after thinking about her Mom’s wish,she joined Polly Horn’s Community Library class forwriting family histories in book form. For almost tenyears she worked on writing her first book on my Dad’sfamily, the Link family. “ I asked family members manyquestions at various family gatherings and learned somuch history from family members that I hadn’t heardbefore,” noted Allen.
Following retirement she has written three family
histories, a history of Sunbury Halter & Saddle 4-HClub, two books of memoriesof Big Walnut residents, aK i n g s t o n T o w n s h i pBicentennial Memory book, abook on local early railroads,h e l p e d w i t h BWAHSBicentennial cookbook, 4-HClub cookbook, and a BuffaloBill Re-enactors cookbook. She also wrote the script forthe Buffalo Bill Re-enactmentswhich was performed by 4-Halumni, horse loving persons,local historical re-enactors, andfriends for five different localBicentennial celebrations inSunbury and Mt. Vernon. Ideas for the script came froma 1901 autobiography ofWilliam Cody (Buffalo Bill).

Allen is a charter member of 65 year old SunburyHalter and Saddle 4-H Club and has been a leader for50 years. She is active in the Delaware CountyGenealogical Society and has proven 29 ancestors asPioneers. She assists other looking for their ancestors.
Suzanne is also a member, a docent and activevolunteer in Big Walnut Area Historical Society. Sheis responsible for the identification and honoring theveterans buried in cemeteries in the Big Walnut schooldistrict. Each Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, sheand her 4-H Club help BWAHS mark graves.

Lepola is Heritage Day Honoree for 2017. BillComisford, president of the historical society, presenteda certificate of appreciation to Lenny for all he has doneto promote preservation of local history through theyears. Lenny’s name is the 32nd name engraved on theplaque in the entry of the Myers Inn Museum.
Sunbury Fall Heritage FestivalWas a Hit in Spite of the Wind
At 2:30 on October 15, the sky was black and wind wasgusting up to 40 m.p.h. Rhonda Mourne, chair of theevents on the square, decidednot to let the weather dictate. It was a good call. While thewind continued most of thelate afternoon, the rain heldback to sprinkles.
Over 300 children took homea free pumpkin - the ruler forthe crowd size.
Sue Comisford chaired thehappenings in and around theMyers Inn. Demonstrators andcrafters moved into the Inn tokeep supplies from blowing
away. Children dipped candlesand made thaumatropes and Abraham Lincolns to takehome.
Rug hookers Mary Jo Georgeand Gwen Hess were joined byothers to work with children totry their hand at hooking.
Blacksmith Rick Helwig worked inthe barn. Ragrug maker LindaO’Quinn worked onthe porchfor visitors of all ages to see. Karen Meyer sold her books,while President AbrahamLincoln strolled the grounds tochat with the guests.

Docents and Guides Neededfor GRE 3rd Graders
General Rosecrans Elementary School third graders arecoming to the Myers Inn at 9:30 Monday morning,November 6th. 105 students, their teachers and someparents will walk to the Museum to learn some localhistory to supplement the 3rd grade community historyclasses.
We will have six groups of children to get through sixstations of information. Each group needs a guide tolead them through all the stations in the allotted time.
Guides should wear historic costumes to add to theambiance of the day. Guides will not need to handlediscipline problems or present a history lesson.
If you are free to help call Polly at 740-965-3582. Wewill be done by 11:00.
Sunbury Korean andVietnam Veterans To BeHonored November 12
Historical society members, American Legion andSunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H members will meet inSunbury Memorial Park to be sure the veterans of theKorean and Vietnam wars have flags and flag holderson their graves.
Suzanne Allen and Warren Owen are identifying thegraves and researching the individual soldiers so theirmilitary history will be read by a 4-H member torecognize the men and women who defended ourcountry.
After the ceremony is completed veterans and 4-Herswill go to the Town Hall for a potluck dinner.
