Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)

When I'm worried and I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep And I fall asleep counting my blessings

When my bankroll is getting small, I think of when I had none at all And I fall asleep counting my blessings

I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads And one by one I count them as they slumber in their beds

If you're worried and you can't sleep, just count your blessings instead of sheep and you'll fall asleep counting your blessings

"Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)" is a popular song written by Irving Berlin and used in the 1954 movie White Christmas. It is commonly performed as a Christmas song, although the lyrics make no refer-ence to the holiday. The song arose from a personal experience of Berlin when his doctor suggested he try "counting his blessings" as a way to deal with insomnia brought on by stress. In a letter to 20th Century Fox executive Joseph Schenck, Berlin wrote:

"I’m enclosing a lyric of a song I finished here and which I am going to publish immediately… You have always said that I commercial my emotions and many times you were wrong, but this particular song is based on what really happened. ... The story is in its verse, which I don’t think I’ll publish. As I say in the lyrics, sometime ago, after the worst kind of a sleepless night, my doctor came to see me and after a lot of self-pity, belly-aching and complaining about my insomnia, he looked at me and said “speaking of doing something about insomnia, did you ever try counting your blessings?”

Berlin then incorporated the song in the film White Christmas to advance the relationship between the char-acters played by Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. The sentimental theme reminds listeners to remem-ber how much they are blessed instead of fretting about short-term problems.

Maybe we need to be reminded of that as well. So often our focus in life is on what we don’t have instead of the blessings we do. Sometimes it’s very easy to take even the smallest blessings in life for granted. I found in my file the following and thought I would share it with you this Thanksgiving:

I’m Thankful For the taxes I pay because it means I am employed.

For the mess to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends. For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.

For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government because it means we have freedom of speech. For the huge heating bill because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means I can hear. For the pile of laundry because it means I have clothes to wear.

For the weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means I am alive.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you know…

Cherry Hill has an automated external defibrillator (AED) which is a portable electronic device that auto-matically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibril-lation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and can treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, al-lowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.

With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson. Ours is located at the bottom of the Weir Foyer stairs to the Sanctuary on the left wall.

The American Heart Association recommends a 3-minute response time from collapse of patient to the use of an AED.

Youth are now meeting in Room 222 in the CE wing to enhance security, safety, convenience and the availability of internet access. We are beginning the refurbishment of room 228 (former computer lab) for the youth to use going forward. This will place the nursery, children and youth all in a cohesive area. We have been participating in the rewards program now for four years and out of the current 207 members of our congregation, we only have

15 signed up to participate! That is only a 7% par-ticipation. Now I am thinking that there are more than 15 members that shop at Kroger on a regular basis, but they haven't linked their card to the church. Even if you only shop there once in a while, it is still worthwhile. Check the bottom of your receipt and it will show the church’s name as the designated or-ganization for rewards. If you have an email address, then you can do it online at https://www.kroger.com/account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow, (or call the office and I will help you), if you don’t have an email ad-dress, then you need to go to the customer service counter at any Kroger and have them do it for you. YOU MUST RE-ENROLL EVERY APRIL TO DESIGNATE AN ORGANIZATION This is EASY MONEY for our church! Money that we can definitely use, and will cost you nothing extra, except your time to enroll. Please designate the church today.

Don’t forget to vote! Our member, Jim Thorpe is running for School Board, along with one other candidate to fill a two-year partial term. There are also four people running to fill two six-year terms.

MONDAY NIGHT STUDY GROUP

WRESTLING WITH ANGELS

Monday Evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Chapel Parlor

Our Monday Night Study group will continue their discussion of some of life’s more difficult questions this month. Have you ever found yourself asking one of more of the following questions?

Why didn’t God answer my prayers? If God is so good, why is there so much evil in the

world? The Bible says to forgive, but how can I?

Why is there senseless tragedy? Is it okay to doubt?

Why is it so hard to love?

If you have, then you are invited to join us on Mon-day evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Chapel Parlor for the study, “Wrestling with Angels: An Intimate Look at the Tough Questions of Life”. Through moving testi-monials and the commentary of noted authors, some of the most troubling questions of faith and ethics are wrestled with and given insight in this in-spirational video series. Our remaining schedule of topics is as follows:

November 7 - Forgiving: How Do I Forgive & Get On with My Life? Lewis Smedes

November 14 - Doubt: How Can I Question & Still Believe? Madeline L’Engle

November 21- Love: Why is Loving So Hard? Keith Miller On Monday, November 28, the group will begin a four week Advent/Christmas study, “The Redemp-tion of Scrooge: How to Go From ‘Bah! Humbug!’ to a Blessed Advent and Merry Christmas”. This study, based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, will explore the world of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Cratchits, with an eye to the Christian Faith. Along the way we will meet the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come and learn about living with and for others in a world blessed by Jesus.

While not required, copies of the book, “The Re-demption of Scrooge” will be ordered for those who wish to have a copy. The cost is $10.00 per book. Those interested should speak to Rev. Mark Phil-lips. Child care will be provided for the class if re-quested.

SUNDAY MORING BIBLE STUDY 8:45 a.m. – Room 222

Our Sunday morning class continues to explore the first twelve chapters of Genesis with Dr. John Whit-field.

If you haven’t been to this class yet, there is still time, as the study will continue this month. Join us upstairs in Room 222. There is lively discussion, helpful insight from John, and good fellowship. Hope to see you this month!

Meghan’s Meghan’s Meghan’s Meghan’s Music Music Music Music Muses Muses Muses Muses

Why Do We Make Music for Worship? Part I Music is an essential element of our worship services at Cherry Hill Presbyter- ian Church. On any given Sunday morning - or Wednesday evening! - at our church, the services normally begin and end with music; we sing hymns to- gether as a congregation; and the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir offer ensem-ble music that they have worked on in advance. It is easy to see that we spend the better part of every worship service making or listening to music together.

But have you ever stopped to ponder why we make music for worship? If you are like me, you probably take it for granted that music has been and seems like it always will be an integral part of our worship ser-vices. Indeed, music-making is a cherished tradition in churches worldwide. But every once in a while, it is worth-while and fun to reflect on why we do, what we regularly do, to find meaning in our habits. Over the next few months, I will be reflecting on this question in the pages of the Messenger: "Why do we make music for worship?" This is a question that I love to think about as a Music Minister, and I warmly in-vite you to reflect with me. Perhaps together we will find new meaning in making music for worship on Sun-day mornings and Wednesday evenings at Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church! Blessings,

UPDATE

Hurricane Matthew has caused death and destruction across the Caribbean and southeastern United States, including more than 800 dead, thousands injured, and the destruction of communities and crops, especially in Haiti. In Haiti, PDA is leveraging long-standing church partnerships to assess damage and to develop long-term disaster recovery and rebuilding strategies. Ecumenical partner ACT Alliance has already issued an ap-peal for over $1 million to assist relief efforts in Cuba, and is working with partners throughout the Caribbean to evaluate needs in Jamaica, the Bahamas, and beyond. After immediate needs are addressed, PDA will remain, drawing upon its strong relationships and effective prior development efforts in the region. Throughout the southeastern United States, PDA has reached out to pastors and presbytery leaders in areas impacted by the storm. Extensive flooding and storm surges throughout the region have damaged many homes and churches. National Response Team members are mobilizing to visit affected presbyteries and to support local development of disaster response and recovery plans. In the coming weeks, PDA will begin deploying teams into as many as seven presbyteries and providing assistance to congregations muck-ing out as the waters recede. Presbyterians are reminded to pray for those who suffered loss of family or home or for those who are working tirelessly to provide rescue, humanitarian aid, and spiritual and psychological support. Star Theater Kitchen Update

The new cabinets have been installed and now the countertops are getting built and finished. We are nearing the end of the construction and closing in on cleaning and restocking it. Once completed we will need some volunteers who can help to do the cleaning and re-stocking.

We ordered all new appliances for the kitchen. The old appliances were just that - old. Having been unplugged for the construction, we were uncertain if they would come back on and for how long.

We have had a generous do-nation from a member who bought the new stove for this kitchen and another one for Memorial Parlor kitchen. We are looking for more members who might be able to “buy an appliance” to offset the costs. We have a refrigera-tor for $570, a dishwasher for $300, and a micro-wave for $180. If you are interested, please let Lisa Levangie know in the office.

Light Fixture Cleaning Party! Saturday November 12th at 9 a.m.

The same day as the Outdoor Fall Clean Up is happening outside, we are looking for some volunteers to help clean the globes in Memorial Parlor and, if that gets finished, move on to the ones in the Sanctuary.

It is a huge endeavor, so the more people to help with this project the faster it will go and the more that will get accomplished.

There is a sign up sheet in the foyer to let us know how many can help. Please bring rubber gloves and dishpans or small buckets to form teams to clean each fixture.
