Computer Science – STEM

Beyer currently offers many STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) courses and is the only high school in Modesto with a designated STEM center. Computer Science education is a growing segment in STEM education and Beyer is proud to offer three Computer Science courses: Pre-Engineering Programming, AP Computer Science A and coming soon, AP Computer Science Principles. Students can ballot for these courses at Beyer for next school year!Didyouknow?• Computing occupations

make up two-thirds of all projected new jobs in STEM fields, making Computer Science one of the most in-demand college degrees.

• California currently has 68,388 open computing jobs.

• The average salary for a computing occupation in CA is $109,410.

Source: www.code.org Parents are encouraged to explore STEM career fields, such as Computer Programming, with their student.

Instructional Norms – College and Career Readiness This year, teachers are continuing to place emphasis on three instructional norms as we continue to ready students for their college and career aspirations after high school.• During instruction, teachers provide students with multiple and frequent

opportunities to discuss and collaborate using complete sentences and academic language.

• While reading, teachers create predetermined text-dependent questions requiring students to cite textual evidence in their responses.

• During mathematics instruction, teachers provide frequent and ample opportunities for teachers and students to demonstrate the standards for mathematical practice.

The band has also had competitions in Dublin and Union City, garnering more awards such as best percussion and auxiliary. Next up is state championships on November 19-20. This year the preliminary competition is held in Merced with finals being held in Clovis. In addition to competitions, the band performed for some Japanese Homestay students in a rally at Beyer. They also play pep tunes at football games and do a lot of fundraising. If would like more information about the band, their schedule, or any fundraising activities, please visit our website at: www.beyerband.org.

Congressional Merit Award

Congratulations to senior Andrea Samano, who was presented the CongressionalMerit Award by Congressman Jeff Denham at an awards reception in October.

Beyer Marching Band and Color Guard The show this year is titled Joy, based on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and using original music written by the band staff. The finished show will be about seven minutes long. This means each band member must memorize the entire piece plus their field movements for the entire seven minutes. On September 24, which was Weekend Band Camp, they had the entire show finished and premiered the show for parents, friends, and alumni. It was a great start to the competition season.

National Merit Semifinalist

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program based on scores from taking the 2015 PSAT. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. From the approximately 16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from the group of finalists. Beyer High School extends our congratulations to Pratima Gangupantula as a National Merit Semifinalist for the Class 2017!

The band’s next competition was the Sierra Cup Classic held at Fresno State University on October 22. The band did very well at the competition taking 1st place along with best music, general effect, percussion and visual awards. Performing in Bulldog Stadium is always a thrill, especially with the challenge of going up and down the ramp that leads into the stadium. It takes a lot of help to get all of the band’s equipment and instruments into the stadium. One of the highlights of this competition is the opportunity to hear the Fresno State Bulldog Band. Each year they put on a show that makes you say “wow”.

After spending several months in preparation, the band is now in competition season. Their first competition was the Valley Christian Quest Classic held at Chabot College in Hayward on October 8. It was a good first time out, performing in perfect weather. The band came away with 1st place and top awards for general effect and percussion. For the freshman, this was the first time they had competed in full uniform. The weight and bulkiness of the uniform takes a little getting used, but they all did well and learned a lot.
