President’s Corner
A BIG THANK YOU TO THE 23 MEMBERS WHO CHECKED OUT 47 LOG CABIN BLOCK KITS FOR OUR OPPORTUNITY QUILT. We have 21 more to make! Carol Masulonis and Karon Clay will be collecting your completed blocks at the November meeting, as well as checking out the final 21 kits to com-plete the top. Our goal is to put the top together in January. Mary Lewis has hand appliquers to help with the border. This quilt is going to be spectacu-lar! Carol Lipp has ordered the table cloths for the Salvation Army’s dining room. As most of you know, the Salvation Army does not charge us for the use of the facility, because of our charitable work. The table cloths are our way of thanking them for their generosity. We are collecting toiletries for the single ladies at the shelter. Sheila Walker has created tote bags for the toiletries we collect. Since we will not be at the Salvation Army in December, because of our Christmas Party, please remember to bring your donation to the November meeting. The November meeting is the deadline for sign-
ing up to attend our Christmas party. I have heard
that our Christmas Party is a lot of fun! I was un-
able to attend last year, because of my first
cataract surgery. See Sue Baker at the November
meeting to sign up (only $11.00 for dinner and
fun).
Happy Quilting,
Ruth Baggs

Board Meetings
The board meets on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 at the Salvation Army. Members are welcome!
Manatee Patchworkers Membership Meeting
October 3, 2016
President Ruth Baggs opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a reminder to silence cell phones. The minutes of the September meeting were approved as read. Treasurer Jane Ellis reported on the bank balance. The guild will revert to a calendar-year fiscal year, and our tax return will be due accordingly. Vice President Jerry Stube couldn’t be here. Signups were available for the Stack and Whack workshop on Saturday, October 8 (cancelled due to storm), the Sit and Sew workshop on November 12, and the PHD challenge, beginning this month. Fifty-three members signed in at the meeting, but 68 were present, along with one new member and six guests. The name-tag drawing was held, which included a pattern from Happy Apple. Opportunity Quilt kits are ready to be picked up. Ruth presented sample blocks. The quilt requires 64 blocks, and 66 kits were made. When you look at the paper-piecing pattern, it is marked by lights and darks on the stitching side. Members were asked not to trim or remove the paper so the blocks stay in shape. A group will later take the paper off. If you aren’t famil-iar with paper piecing, members will offer help at the November Sit and Sew. Ruth has extra strips at home if anyone makes a mistake and needs a replacement strip. The quilt will be color-ful, with an appliqué border. The committee would like to have the blocks back by the next meeting if possible. Ruth thanked Carol Lipp for cutting all the fabric strips to size. No report from the Communications committee. Rose Ryan and Janice Dentler, Community Service: Rose reminded members of the October 4 meeting from 10-3 at the Humane Society to make dog beds. You can bring a machine or come and help stuff beds and mats. It is time to make a quilt delivery to Guardian Ad Litem, since we have 41 quilts to do-nate. They can take almost any size from baby to adult. Sue Baker reported on the Holiday party. She will have directions to Southeast High School at the November meeting. It will be a very special event that members won’t want to miss. The menu includes Chicken Cordon Bleu, Kings’ rolls, brownies, tea, lemonade, coffee or water. Alcohol is not permitted on school grounds. No report on cottage groups or library. Cindy Cook sent out one card. Show and Tell began with trapunto projects from the Mark Sherman workshop. The program featured Mary-Jeanine Ibarguen with a lecture and trunk show on scrap quilts.

recognition, please let Cindy Cook know

Community Service The November workshop will be on Friday the 18th at the Salvation Army. We’ll work on a variety of tasks, so come join us! We delivered fifty quilts to the Guardian Ad Litem program this month, along with twelve dog beds and eight cat mats to Bishop Animal Shelter. We also received a very generous donation from Cyndy Andrea of a number of totes full of fabric for community-service use, so we have plenty of new-project possibilities!
In addition to our regular Community Service work-shops, those interested in helping make dog beds and cat mats can meet at the Humane Society con-ference room on 14th Street. The next workshops will be on Tuesday, November 8 and possibly on December 12. If you have any questions, contact Janice Dentler at [email protected] or Rose Ryan at [email protected].
Carol Masulonis is our Cottage Group Coordinator.
Contact her at [email protected]. Your cottage group should be mostly members but can include others—think of it as a recruiting tool! Cottage
groups mean fellowship, friendship, and accomplishment! Carol would like to encourage our
snowbird members to form a cottage group which will meet during the fall and winter months, so contact Carol
if you’d like to be a part of that group!

We have retreats, bus trips, classes and a biennial quilt show with vendors and an opportunity quilt. Newsletters are published monthly and are available on our website. If you don’t have access to the
internet, you can provide stamped self-addressed envelopes and we will mail your newsletter. Officers are elected in the spring of even-numbered years for two-year terms. Members of Manatee
Patchworkers make charity quilts which are donated to organizations chosen by guild members; workshops are held to produce quilts.
To help make your guild experience a happy and productive one, we want to get to know you better.
There are many ways you can become involved with the guild: hold an office, serve on the board, join a committee and/or participate in activities. Please check all the areas below which interest you.

To all members:
Please help support our upcoming classes. The instructors work hard to provide quality classes for your education and enjoyment and we as a guild pay a lot of money to bring them to you. Each student
pays only a nominal fee of $35 (members) to take a class, plus your supplies. Whenever possible, I will have classes that use what you have, but if a speaker/teacher has a kit that is necessary, please support them as well. These are professionals who do this as their income. Please remember that copying and
sharing books and patterns is in violation of copyright laws and we cannot support that activity. You must each have your own book or pattern...it is the law. Your support and participation will insure that we can continue to have speakers and classes. We have been able to secure a new loca-tion for our classes (thanks Janice Dentler!) at the Humane Society in Bradenton. They are going to be
great to work with, and you can feel good that the multiple dog beds and cat mats that have been made and donated were the reason we have been offered this facility at
NO COST!
