. News from Grade 1 French Immersion Math WOW! Who knew working with numbers could be so much fun! We have welcomed "Zero My Hero" ‐ the most powerful number and watched how he turned the number 1 into 10, and then 100. We built "Fantastic Five" and "Terrific Ten" frames and used them as anchors for describing different numbers, such as 7 is 2 more than 5 and 3 less than 10. The students used snap cubes to show a number form 11 to 20 and then shared their ideas with the class. This encouraged the students to try different combinations. We used the hundred chart to find number patterns for counting by 10's, numbers that are "more than" and "less than" a number, and the calculator to solve simple addition problems. The students really enjoyed challenging each other to see if they could come up with the right answer to an oral addition problem using the calculator. We have also taken a survey and done a tally to answer the question "When will we have the first snowfall"? We are predicting that it won't snow till December ‐ does that make you smile or frown?
In grade one we LOVE Halloween. In the weeks leading up to Halloween we learned spooky vocabulary, a Halloween song, C’est l’halloween by Matt Maxwell, we learned to read a short Halloween book and we even did some Halloween writing. The week of Halloween was great
fun! With the help of a couple volunteer moms we were able to do some very exciting Halloween stations which the students circulated through in small groups. At the first station the students were transformed into scary spiders (des araignées) by making spider hats. They wore
their hats all day long and some even took on the persona of a spider. Then, the students practiced their French colours by colouring a Haunted House colour by numbers (une maison
hantée) which demonstrated their ability to read the colours in French independently. At the third station, students turned into witches (des sorcières) and with their eyes closed touched many
ingredients for Witches’ Stew including; eyes, worms, hair, etc. The students shrieked in delight as they touched the ingredients and tried to guess what they were actually feeling. Halloween
was a blast! Joyeux Halloween

NEWS from CFLC The last few months in the CFLC have been exciting, we've made silly putty and painted a pumpkin for Halloween. We have painted and colored up a storm, and happily made a mess and new friends. Our art work is displayed just outside our classroom. Many of us have shared the camaraderie of a 'family-like' setting to play and interact, along with a healthy snack! (coffee for adults and apple juice or water for children also available) The Learning in our Neighborhood (LION) RV has been visiting with the families and providing an excellent chance to explore 'learning through play' with activities in math, language, creative and science activities. This program is open to parents/caregivers with children between newborn to six years old. As of November 13, 2015, the program will be coming indoors and sharing space with the CFLC program to enhance and continue to 'learn through play'. All are welcome! The CFLC is also running a 'Mother Goose ' program on Wednesdays at 1:15 - 2:30pm. This program will run till December 9, 2015. Mother Goose is open for newborns to 12 month olds. All are welcome to come for stories, rhymes and cookies / juice.
