Hello Members,Thank you to members who supported the Club at our recent AGM. We looked back on a very

successful financial year for the Club. For the first time in approximately 7 years, flying hours and member numbers increased. The Club also reported the largest operating surplus in 10 years. This was in part due to improvements in our training products and increased enrolments in the College. We were lucky to gain an influx of students from ECU during the year. Changing banks enabled us to restructure our finances and revalue our assets, and acquire an S model Cessna 172. Together with the re-birthing of VH-RCF, this signalled the beginning of the long-awaited fleet refurbishment. We went on to acquire 3 additional Cessna 172 Ss. The Club also won the contract to provide flying training to Polytechnic West. With growing enrolments in the College, and two new classes of Polytechnic West students imminent, we are building towards another big year at the Club. Last year was also notable for the great strides made to comply with the new CASA regulations - parts 61 and 142. We made good progress towards modernising our computer hardware and applications - a process that is never as simple as it sounds. These many successes are due to the hard work of our dedicated staff, who have worked incredibly well under difficult conditions. In the flying department, we are grateful to CFI Trevor Jones and his team of instructors for dealing with the increase in new students and the impact of the changing regulations. Glen Caple and his team have done an outstanding job responding to a number of incidents, doing SIDS on our own fleet, and the C152 refurbishments, as well as the regular maintenance of our heavily-worked fleet. On top of this they managed to take on additional retail work. The increased flying activity placed an additional burden on all our administrative staff, especially those in operations and accounting, and we thank them for rising to the challenge. CEO David Currey was the glue holding the whole machine together, and David should be proud of achieving this outstanding result. We have a great team. At the AGM - Life Membership was awarded to Rod Garnaut. Rod has been involved with Racwa since the 1960s, and he has built an extraordinary flying résumé in that time, representing the Club at the ALACs no less than 25 times, and in the Wings International against New Zealand at least 10 times. Rod has helped Racwa win the Federation Cup on many occasions, and he has been the Individual ALAC Champion on 8 occasions. Rod has demonstrated great dedication and loyalty to the Club as a committee member and active volunteer. He is a worthy recipient of Life Membership. Rod retired from the committee at this AGM, and we thank him for his service to the Club.

Onwards andUpwards

We welcomed James Murphy to the committee at the AGM. You might have seen James flying his Jabiru or working at Murrayfield. He brings great experience and enthusiasm to the committee, and we hope to see James involved in the development activities at Murrayfield. It has been a busy period at the Club. A busy bee was held to tidy the gardens, and it was refreshing to see so many dedicated members rolling up their sleeves. Thank you to those who attended. The Club was asked to arrange a fly-in to Langley Park as part of the City of Perth's Heritage Week, and a number of vintage aircraft were expertly flown into Langley Park for the display. Brian Hernan gave an excellent presentation regarding the history of Langley Park as an airport. The day was a great promotional success for the Club. On Sunday 18th October the inaugural Greg Hill Competition was held at Murrayfield. This is a competition between the pick of the instructors, members and college students, flying a combination of flour bombing, practice forced landing and precision spot landing. On this occasion the instructors won overall. VH-UWC, our newly refurbished C152 named after Greg Hill, will be officially unveiled at the upcoming WALACs to be held in Bunbury in early November. Greg's mother Mary will attend the ceremony, and at the same event we hope Mary will present the trophy to the instructor team. We are very grateful to the Hill family for making a very generous contribution to the C152 Refurbishment Fund, and we are honoured to have Greg's name on the aircraft. There have been a number of recent opportunities to keep up-to-date with emerging issues. Both CASA and AirServices recently visited the Club to give presentations. Don't forget about our monthly Aviation Workshops and Industry Presentations - these are an excellent way to continue learning. The next Aviation Workshop will be combined with a New Members’ Night on 17th November. We've been busy at Murrayfield, with more members making the most of efficiencies of flying OCTA. We continue to host the Air Force Cadets regularly. The Club uses Murrayfield as the preferred site for Instructor Training, and a new demountable building has increased classroom space. Michael Chlopek has been busy promoting the Club, with a Learn-to-Fly held in Mandurah. In breaking news, the highly-anticipated Members' Benefits Scheme will be launched in November. More details of this exciting new program will be communicated shortly. As if there wasn't already good cause to fly with Racwa - this will be another great reason to retain Racwa membership, and to attract new members to the Club.

Good afternoon Mr CurreyIt was a pleasure to speak with you this afternoon.Rick has provided the most exemplary level of customer

service in supporting my recent weekend trip to Geraldton in EEP. I discussed this trip with Rick some months back, and having finalised the dates (18-20th), Rick ensured that an aircraft I was both familiar with and endorsed on was available. EEP was delivered to us with plenty of hours available, and performed beautifully as befits one of the Club’s machines. Tie down kits and ELTs were on the bench when we arrived, and with the courtesy of one of your instructors we were signed out with absolute ease. I am embarrassed to admit that I do not recall the young gentleman who checked my flight plan, weight & balance, licence and medical; but I wish that his service to the club be recognised in whatever way is appropriate. Having not met me before, he graciously spent the time to carefully go through my plans, to advise me on matters of detail and to ensure the customer service and safety culture of the Club. I am sure you have his records on file for signing me out on the 18th, please pass on my sincere thanks to him.Mike Thomas did my dual check a few weeks ago. All your instructors are of the highest calibre, but Mike demonstrated a commitment to his rather ham-fisted student (me!) that levels on the extraordinary. As discussed, I am interested in a retractable and CSU rating, with a twin rating to follow. If Mike was available to take me through these steps I would be more than delighted. To be a member of Racwa is a privilege never to be taken lightly. I am sorry I cannot attend tonight’s AGM; please register my apologies. I am re-organising my professional duties, with a view to perhaps (in the next year or so) nominating for Racwa committee. I finish my position on the Board of Directors for

To introduce myself, I am James Murphy and a flying member of Racwa. I bring a diverse and relevant skill set in many key areas such as aviation, finance, organisation and

engineering. Both of my daughters and I are active members of Racwa. Emily is currently the youngest Racwa female pilot who has just completed her first solo at just 15. We continue to actively volunteer in aid of bettering Murrayfield and the Club for its members, with Katie helping with Murrayfield Ops. My flying career has extended for over 30 years, starting with a trial flight in a Microlight on my birthday at the age of 21 at the foot of Box Hill in Kent. Once bitten the story is so very similar to the rest of you, but I was lucky enough to have had the privilege of holding a Flying Instructor rating culminating in holding a position of CFI in a flight school in Cornwall. In 2013, Emily & I flew around Australia in a Jabiru 230D which was featured in Tarmac Topics. In addition, I have served in the British Army as a member of the Special Forces and later completed my officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. I was then posted into the Royal Engineers, starting with a field squadron and ending in bomb disposal.

With Operations currently booming, we were in what could be called the midst of a parking crisis. Cars were almost parking on top of each other to avoid

paying a ridiculous sum of money outside the club. From Andrew Eldridge’s President’s report: “After struggling with restricted parking space for almost 2 years, we have convinced

JAH to relinquish their grip on our old parking area in exchange for a modest rent [and] members and visitors

Sign Choice

From a business perspective, I run a Project Management consultancy which has seen my professional skills bring multimillion dollar projects through to completion in areas such as building a mine for BHP and successfully transitioning PathWest into Fiona Stanley Hospital, to name but a few. My major focus is Murrayfield, as I strongly believe this is the Club's future and salvation. I intend calling members with appropriate skill sets, in the coming months to lend a hand, and bring Murrayfield to an operational level that will befit us all.I look forward to chatting with all of you over the next year, and if you see me, just introduce yourself, as I am one of your representatives and am always interested in your input.

are once again free to come and park at no expense.”We are fortunate to now have access to a substantial area of parking. Without the additional space, access by emergency services was restricted and this could have created disastrous consequences.. As members we must acknowledge how privileged we are to have a space for parking and maintain and respect the area. We would like to keep this area strictly for our Members and Patrons, that is why new signs have been erected in the 3 parking areas owned by Racwa; staff & member parking ONLY in the

small car park and lots adjacent to the hangar, and patron parking in the larger lot that was once paid parking. These signs could not have been made possible without the benevolent contributions of Gary Evans and his contact Trevor Jones at Sign Choice Midvale, who did us a great deal.Ronnie from the hangar was also a great help in pulling down the ticket signs that once controlled that portion of parking. We believe that having this area will only encourage business and benefit the Club.

A huge thanks goes to those who gave up their Saturday morning on Grand Final weekend, brought along tools and

equipment to tidy up the grounds around the club at the Spring Busy Bee.Staff and members of the public who arrived at the Club in the ensuing days gave great feedback on how much better it looked with grass neatly cut, winter weeds removed, plants and roses pruned and plenty of TLC given to all the garden beds. Almost an entire Skip was filled with the rubbish. The pavers were cleaned and returned to sparkling order. Spiders and cobwebs did not stand a chance and were blown away with the powerful water blaster borrowed from a kind memberThe great turnout enabled all this to be achieved in three hours and everyone was away by 11-30 to watch the Hawks and Eagles. Our next Busy Bee will be after Christmas / New Year with attention turning to maintenance of the clubhouse and hangar. Support from the membership again will be appreciated as

always, as many hands make light work.

“I would recommend WAAC to anyone who's thinking of becoming a

pilot” said Lauren. “The support system and peer network from studying full time, plus the ability to learn from each other’s mistakes and share

the overall experience makes you a much better pilot.”Lauren Dowding recently completed her Commercial Pilot Licence flight test, starting her flying journey on the Aviation College’s September 2014 intake after graduating from John Septimus Roe Anglican College and their aviation program. Lauren believes she couldn’t have done it without the support of her parents, the executive team at Racwa and her ground lecturers. “Everyone at Racwa is so passionate; they make you want to spend more time here.” Completing her Commercial Licence in exactly 1 year and 1 month, Lauren believes she has grown and really matured in the time she has spent flying with the club. Her next step is tailwheel endorsement. “I have great appreciation for Biplanes” said Lauren. “I did a "Scenic Route Victor 65" with Billy Saville in the Tiger Moth and you realise there is really nothing holding you in; just wood and fabric – a truly amazing experience.” Lauren’s ultimate goal is to fly a Boeing 747 one day “they’re legendary machines that have carried the

industry” and finish her career at the RFDS “flying amazing planes to awesome places, and helping to save lives in the meantime; what other profession can say they do all that?”.Lauren also recently became a member of the Australian Women Pilots Association (AWPA). “They have really good social events and are another great support system.” Lauren is meeting girls from the RAAF, developing her skills and growing in the industry. She's looking forward to being part of the

association as more women participate. She encourages all girls in aviation to be involved and experience the value of having a strong support network. “I appreciate everything Racwa and the Aviation College has done for me, and hope one day to give back as much as you have all given me.”Congratulations Lauren and all of our Achievers - we look forward to seeing you around the club and wish you all the best with your future career.

Murrayfield MattersThe sunshine is here. Last month had excellent conditions

for flying. This month has yielded the same results. Warm sunny days with stable conditions and little to no wind.

Excellent for first solos. To start with, I would like to congratulate Emily Murphy. On the 26th of September Emily was the youngest student pilot at Murrayfield (and maybe WA) to achieve her first solo. 15 years and 2 weeks. She has worked extremely hard and her father and new RACWA committee member James Murphy is as proud as punch. Well done Emily. The second is Ben Ham. Ben started flying with me on Trial Flights a little under 2 years ago. On the 16th of October Ben went solo in a little over 2 weeks of full time training. Ben plans to fly 4 to 5 days a week until he completes his commercial licence. A long road ahead. Great work. The Australian Air Force Cadet Camp was also held here during the last week of September. A separate article has been included in this issue. Congratulations to them as well. Finally, I missed this in the last issue, but congratulations to Glen Webster and Danielle Moran for both passing their RPL flight tests. Two more very hard working students who both want to take it to the end.Last month, I only had a small article with my work load, but there isn't much difference this month. It was a staggering 100 hour month not including the cadet camp and instructor training. The Aerobatics Competition was held over 3 days. An excellent event which drew a crowd. The Greg Hill Trophy saw the instructors victorious (as it should be). Pinjarra RSL were kind enough to invite me to their Department of Veteran Affairs expo evening. The evening is to inform local members of events and activities in the Pinjarra / Peel Region. It was great to be a part of it and we hope to be back again next year. Finally, the Mandurah Learn to Fly Day was held with two seminars in the day. It was a great success with 20+ people attending. Most were walk ins off the street and we would be surprised if a student doesn’t come from this. I would

like to thank members James and Emily Murphy, Doug Whitfield and Guy Birchell for volunteering their precious time to promote our club. In addition I would like to thank Eloyise Braskic for her dedication and hard work, especially with everything that is on her plate at Jandakot. The months get busier and busier. Glenda has finished another Instructor training course with a new one starting in early November. Our Murrayfield Formation group is flying strong with another flight booked late October. Anyone is welcome to join us.Newly elected RACWA director James Murphy is hard at work finalising the preparation to commence works on the aerodrome. With intentions to have a construction road built soon we are hoping for hangars to be available within 12 months. Watch this space. Congratulations James and welcome aboard. Once again, my student is waiting for me so I will sign off.Remember, with the increased demand on aircraft at Jandakot, Murrayfield has a fleet ready to go. Despite our growth here, there is always room for members to hire. AND IT'S CHEAPER.Until November.

Greg Hill Memorial TrophyThe instructor team, led by Nicole Stoddart, are

claiming bragging rights after wresting the Greg Hill Memorial Trophy from the student’s team, who have

won the event since its inception in 2013. The Greg Hill Memorial Trophy was held at Murrayfield Airfield on Sunday 18th October. Previously known as the GM’s Trophy, the competition saw teams of Instructors, Students and Members competing for the trophy. The competition includes a practice forced landing, flour bombing and a spot landing. Two Student teams were entered, one from Western Australian Aviation College (WAAC) and the other from Polytechnic West. After a thorough brief by Andrew Eldridge - the battle commenced. With the three eager judges ready in the aircraft, the Instructors piled in to show the Students and Members how it was done. Zac was leading the way, closely followed by Brendan, with Nicole rounding out the tail. Initial impressions were that the Instructors were here to prove a point. The second round saw the WAAC Students enter the ring. Lead pilot was Ian, with Simon closely following behind. With the two students in the air, the weather began to wreak havoc but this did not deter them, with excellent results seen by both (possible reason for additional points???). Simon was the first person of the day to hit the target with his flour bomb. Max began the competition after the short rain delay and provided the students with the boost needed to make the competition close. With the weather not playing ball and the visibility significantly reduced - we took an early lunch break. The barbeque was manned by John Ridgway and all the competitors were well fed and ready to go by the time the weather had cleared and we were underway again.

This time saw the Polytechnic West Students take to the air. Although the team of Austen, Tjaart and Trent were all new to flying training, they put up a great fight in some trying conditions. The day's competition was also the first time the trio had experienced flying a low level circuit and performed well considering. The last round of the day saw the experienced Members try their hat at the competition. Rob, James and Rod put up a great fight and produced some excellent scores in difficult conditions. With the competition now complete and all members from each team having had a shot at the three rounds, the scores were tallied while the teams waited eagerly in the hangar. Soon Andrew gathered the troops, only to build the suspense by informing everyone that the results would be announced in the coming days when David Currey returned from vacation.Tuesday morning saw the announcement everyone had been waiting for - for the first time since the competition's inception, the Instructors had come away victorious. The day saw a lot of funny moments and many stressful ones too, but overall it was a day enjoyed by everybody competing as well as those who came to spectate.Photos - Ramin Yekani from “Blue & Black Photography

Richard and friends he has dragged in are finding out the hard way how to put together this all metal aircraft “using only the tools found in any garage”. A witty and thoroughly enjoyable talk. Now 80% done with 80% to go!Brian Hernan then told us about Sir Hubert Wilkins, Polar Explorer and Aviator.General John Monash compared him to Lawrence of Arabia and said he was the bravest man he had ever met. The list of his life accomplishments is astounding and yet so few know of him. He was more widely known and feted in America than in his native Australia. From September 27 to October 4, eleven lucky Air Force Cadets participated in the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) Bi-Annual camp at Murrayfield to

complete their First Solo training. The AAFC interview young men and women for a position on these camps, which are held in the April and September school holidays. The training is intensive, with cadets flying two sorties a day and receiving ground briefings to enable them to reach the standard for their first solo

flight. This camp was sadly held up for a 4 day period of excessive 15kt plus crosswinds which prevented 6 cadets from

Up Up 'n' Awayachieving their goal of a solo flight. However, each cadet successfully achieved the standard for solo and would have undertaken this epic flight had the wind been more forgiving. As the Manager of Murrayfield, I was happy to have the Cadets here for a week. They were well behaved and treated the aircraft with respect. The place was always clean and tidy. It is truly a pleasure having the AAFC at Murrayfield. As an officer in the AAFC, it was a delight teaching them, and we look forward to many camps to come.Congratulations again to the young men and women of Elementary Flying Training Course (EFTC) 2/15.

Uniform Whiskey Charlie was the next cab-off-the-rank for our fleet refurbishment project. Refurbishing our fleet is not an easy task. It draws on a lot of resources, from an already work

pressured hangar and from our benevolent member contributions that have been incredibly valuable for this much needed upgrade. UWC was fitted with new interiors and a fresh coat of club livery and now stands beside RCF as an aircraft we can be proud of.Our Cessna 152’s are in great mechanical condition, completion of the SIDs inspections have affirmed this and so now our attention must be focused on the aesthetic condition of our fleet. We encourage our members to take care of our aircraft and clean up after themselves. To make Uniform Whiskey Charlie even more special, UWC holds Greg Hill’s name. A kind contribution from Greg’s family expedited the refurbishment process, and we are honoured to display Greg’s name on UWC and continue to fly with such a good friend of the club.

“Anyone can fly a plane, to fly RFDS takes a different kind of person” said Gavin Healy, the General Manager of Royal Flying Doctor Service

(RFDS) Western Operations when he spoke about the kinds of people he would employ to a RFDS pilot position. “We already know you can fly a plane – to apply for the role you need your licence, we’re looking for a person who stands out, who can stay focused even though you know what might happen in the back of the plane.”We were fortunate enough to secure Gavin Healy for our Industry Presentation in September. Gavin is the General Manager of the RFDS Western Operations: a subsection of the Royal Flying Doctor Service which serves nearly 2.5 million kilometres, the largest subsection for the national aero-medical organisation.RFDS provides emergency primary health care to those living in rural, remote and regional areas of Australia, which in Western Australia means 23,000 hours worth of flying annually, assisting 34,700 patients and transporting close to 9,000 patients. “It’s difficult to maintain what we do” said Gavin “especially for the amount of hours we fly every year.” Comprised of a fleet of 15 aircraft, predominately Pilatus, as they are the most efficient, the RFDS maintains the aircraft through a third party provider. Gavin was employed at the RFDS to improve processes and commercialise the not-for-profit culture. Before leaving high school, Gavin was told he wasn’t bright enough for the PPL standard set by people in the aviation industry. Gavin proved them wrong. He began his flying journey with a Junior Grade 3 instructor named Mike Pottier, at the Royal Aero Club; before moving on to flying low level operations for The Agricultural Protection Board, tracking various types of animals throughout WA. Gavin has been a flight instructor for an organisation flying out of Jandakot and was Chief Pilot for Rottnest Airlines. “I never allowed myself to become stagnant” said Gavin, “I always ask, how can I better myself, I’m always looking for a challenge.” Gavin went on to become the Flight Standards Manager for Skippers Aviation, a role he spent 12 years in, training and checking and ATO on Metro 23’s and Dash 8’s; “Skippers was a well paid role” admitted Gavin. “There were people under me, I had numerous endorsements and management were handling the staff routine, but it wasn’t enough for me.” Gavin explained how he found flying big jets boring, so he took some management courses and set his sights on working with the RFDS. Gavin’s advice on career progression: “constantly ask yourself, is it fulfilling?” Gavin asked questions and made contacts, he ultimately made a decision where he wanted to go and put the steps in place to make that happen. “Have a goal and take advice” said Gavin “I had a mentor who steered me on.”To qualify for an interview with the RFDS you must have at least 2000 hours. A couple hundred of those must be at night and at least 500 hours turbine IR. Gavin explained how the interviewing process itself would consist of 3 parts: a written assessment, a conversation and

practical with the aircraft. “The written assessment is just a formality to weed out the lazy candidates” said Gavin “We’re more interested in the type of person we’re employing; we get to understand that part in the second section.” Gavin explained the second section of an interview with the RFDS involves speaking to the head of training and the chief pilot. “We’ll ask you questions that have nothing to do with aviation” said Gavin, “have a think about what that means.” Gavin went on to speak about who he would employ to the RFDS role: “We already know you can fly a plane – to apply for the role you need your licence, we’re looking for a person who stands out; we’re looking for someone who is civil, polite and can get along and interact with people” said Gavin. The final part of the RFDS interview process involves a practical assessment on the PC12.“We don’t expect you’re going to fly it well” mentioned Gavin, “but we do expect a level of competency – in life you don’t always get it right the first time, but ask for a second chance and show improvement” that was Gavin’s advice. Gavin’s advice for those considering embarking on a career flying for the RFDS: 4 “Pilots who are the most successful take the jobs that are less than ideal” – Gavin advises to push yourself to work the jobs that no one else wants. You will put up with a lot more but you learn a lot more from the experience.

4 The next 2-3 years in Australian aviation will be hard, but Gavin suggests that the tourism industry isn’t going anywhere- there will still be jobs for pilots in Australia

4 If you choose a path to the RFDS and you're a successful candidate it will be the best experience of your life, from gravel strips to landing on roads that the local police need to close down. Anyone can land on 60ft of Tarmac, not everyone makes it.

4 Attitude is everything.“You need an ATPL to work for me” announced Gavin. RFDS Western Operations have recently ordered 3 Pilatus PC-24 Jet aircraft which max take-off weight can reach up to 8,006kg – a requirement only an ATPL can satisfy. “More important than that I believe you shouldn’t employ someone you can’t promote” said Gavin. “Do your ATPLs while you’re still in study-mode and get them done early.” Gavin holds both Australian and New Zealand ATPL licences of his own. Even if you never use your ATPL, it’s knowledge that is important for every pilot to understand. Overall, the RFDS is about making a difference, “We’ll employ you if you are the right person” said Gavin, and that’s probably not a bad direction for your career and your life in general.
