November 2014 Issue 26 Number 11
Grand Knight Message
Thanksgiving
It seems like yesterday was just summer. But here we are, the month of November, Thanksgiving month. We should all take the time and pause a few moments during this month to reflect on the many blessings we have received. We should also look at those moments that are not particularly pleasant and be thankful for the experience. It is these events that build character and bring us closer to the Lord. I always remember Max Ehrmann’s Desiderata when unpleasant events happen. He concludes his poem with, “With all its sham and drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.” This month we also celebrate Veteran’s Day. Let us all thank the veterans in our council who have served honorably in the Armed Forces. We also need to continually pray for those Christians being persecuted in Iraq and the rest of the world. This month is also the mid-term elections. I strongly
encourage all of you to vote. This is the only way we can change the course of governance in this country, not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of our children and grandchildren as well. We will also have the Memorial Mass on November 25, to honor those brothers who have gone before us. We also have the annual
Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels on Thanksgiving Day. If you can spare a couple of hours delivering meals to those who are not able to fend for themselves or who are alone, please do so. There are other program activities planned for the entire month. Please check the calendar for all events. Please try to recruit a new brother at every opportunity that presents itself and be sure you have a Form 100 with you at all times. Last, but certainly not least, we are still looking for volunteers for bingo on Monday and Thursday nights. A VERY SAFE AND HAPPY THANGSGIVING TO ALL OF YOU.
Vivat Jesu, Gabe Franco - Grand Knight
Family of the Month
Brother Vahwere and Muhimwali Kavota
I am proud to name Brothers Vahwere and Muhimwali Kavota as November’s Family of the month. These brothers have done
marvelous things for the council. They are both very involved with youth activities, to include Laser Tag party, Halloween Party, and the upcoming Youth Christmas
Party. Both are also very active members of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hampton VA, acting as ushers and greeters. Both are always there to assist in any way they can, whether it is volunteering for bingo or adopt-a-spot. Congratulations, Vahwere and Muhimwali for a job well done!
Knight of the Month
Brother Chuck Olson
I am proud to name Brother Chuck Olson as November’s Knight of the Month. Brother Chuck is an active member of the St. Jerome
Church in Newport News and volunteers many hours in support of parish activities. He was instrumental in the success of the State Organizational Meeting held in October. Brother Chuck is also an energetic volunteer for
the council’s bingo operations, selling progressive bingo games. He is always there to lend a helping hand, such as blood drives, Peninsula Agency for the Aging dry goods packing, and degree exemplifications. He is also a member of the council’s first degree team. You can always rely on him when volunteers are needed. Congratulations Brother Chuck for a job well done.

Souls in Purgatory
The month of November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory, whose feast is celebrated on November 2.
With the exception of the last Sunday, November falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time
and is represented by the liturgical color green.
According to Catholic Church doctrine, Purgatory is an intermediate state after physical death in which those
destined for heaven "undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven". Only
those who die in the state of grace but have not in life reached a sufficient level of holiness can be in Purgatory, and
therefore no one in Purgatory will remain forever in that state or go to hell.
The word "Purgatory", derived through Anglo-Norman and Old French from the Latin word purgatorium, has come to
refer also to a wide range of historical and modern conceptions of postmortem suffering short of everlasting
damnation, and is used, in a non-specific sense, to mean any place or condition of suffering or torment, especially one
that is temporary.
The Catholic Church teaches that the fate of those in purgatory can be affected by the actions of the living. The practice
of indulgences helps the faithful as remission before God, through the mediation of the Church, of the temporal
punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven. Indulgences may be obtained for oneself, or on behalf of
the dead.
As we dedicate this month for the souls in purgatory, let’s pray for our beloved deceased and the soul of the faithful as
we pray:
O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory.
Remember not their offenses and negligences, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity.
Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to
face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to
their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world."
Amen.
From the Deputy Grand Knight
Brothers - The month of November is truly a month of giving Thanks. On the Fourth of the month, we can show our thanks for the right to vote. On the Eleventh of the month, we can show our thanks to our outstanding men and women we call Veterans. On the Twenty-Fifth of the month, we can gather together to celebrate a
memorial mass for our Brothers who are no longer with us. Lastly, on the Twenty-Seventh of the month, we can sit down with family and friends and celebrate our National Holiday of Thanksgiving. So much to be thankful for and one whole month to put it all together. Please plan on attending the events set up by the Council. Brother Knights work hard to give excellent events, and our participation is what makes us a truly outstanding Council. Also, please make sure that you fill out a Fraternal Survey by the end of the month. This information is essential that we can show the state of Virginia how much our council does for charity, community and our youth. Have a great month and a very special holiday.
Vivat Jesu, Dan Richard - Deputy Grand Knight

NOCTURNAL ADORATION - Blessed Sacrament Chapel (OLMC):
Join us on the FIRST FRIDAY (10 PM – 6 AM) for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The Holy Hour consists of Powerful Readings, Silent and Recited prayer. The next Nocturnal Adoration is the weekend of November 7/8. Join brother Knights and their families as we prepare to meet
the Lord. Many of our loyal and dedicated members have passed or are getting older. We need some help on the early morning hours. No need to make a long term commitment - choose any hour, you will be surprised and gratified. Families are encouraged to attend anytime.
Fraternal Benefits Agent
You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not
You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need.
When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older. If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the extension is a great blessing for me – and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn’t help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members? Whether you’re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. Call for a free consultation today. I look forward to discussing coverage with you.

From the Faithful Navigator
Thanks and Prayers to Our Veterans... We give thanks and praise for our nation's veterans. We honor them for their faithful service to our country, and for what they have done to defend and preserve our freedom. Generation after generation, young men and women have answered our country's call. And as a result, many of their lives have been changed forever. We are grateful to all who have served, whether in peacetime or in periods of conflict. We especially remember those who have been tempered by fire, those who continue to bear wounds of the body or the spirit as a result of what they endured. They lie in our veterans' hospitals or struggle for recovery in rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. They suffer from post-traumatic stress and “survivor” guilt. They yearn for peace in their souls. It is our prayer to God to heal their wounds, to banish whatever inner demons may haunt them, and to give them peace within so they may return fully to their families and to society. Let us thank our country's veterans—those of past generations, and those who continue to earn this title today. May we never forget what our country has asked of them and what they have given in return. Help us to care enough to give them the respect and honor they are due. In Memory… “We can shed tears that they have gone, or we can smile because they lived. We can remember them and only that they have gone, or we can cherish the memory and let it live on.” Join us on November 25 as we remember our deceased Brothers and Sir Knights of this Council and Assembly. Thanks for your support… Sincere thanks to all who assisted (set-up, pricing, donating, tear-down, purchasing and general support) in last month’s Rummage Sale. Net proceeds of $1086 will be equally divided between the Council and the Assembly for their chosen charities. Items not sold were donated to the Boys and Girls Club and St. Vincent DePaul Church Outreach Ministry. Important Dates… November 1 - Fourth Degree Exemplification, Richmond, Virginia (Predicted to be our largest “2430 Class” in
recent years!) November 4 – Assembly meeting (6:30 p.m. Potluck Dinner, 7:10 p.m. Rosary, 7:30 p.m. Veterans Salute) November 4 – Election Day! November 25 – Memorial Mass November 27 – Happy Thanksgiving!
Fraternally, Harold Hairston
