RALLY REPORT Watch this space for the Junee goss. You will have to contain you excitement until next month’s Gas Bottle to get the low down on the Junee Rally. The keener participants are already here – the Nelsons were the first into the starting stalls, arriving on Monday the 24th and were well established when Rob and I arrived on Tuesday. The rush was well and truly on today (Wednesday) with the Hensons early arrivers, followed shortly after by Kathy Barrett and Graham Peel, the Summerfields and Gayle Berthold and Ian Sharpe. Apparently some of us couldn’t wait to get here on our designated day – Rob and I were only 2 days ahead of ourselves! May the Christmas Rally festivities begin!

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SPEED LIMIT CHANGES

Since September 1, the road rules in South Australia have changed to require motorists to slow down to 25 kmh when passing emergency roadside incidents. The new rule applies to incidents involving all emergency service vehicles including Country Fire Service, Metropolitan Fire Service, State Emergency Service, South Australian Police and South Australian Ambulance Service. If you are passing a stationary emergency vehicle with red and/or blue flashing lights, you must slow down to a safe speed and not exceed 25 kilometres per hour. This does not apply to roads divided by a median strip where the emergency vehicle is on the other side of the road. If you will be travelling in South Australia and would like more information, go to www.mylicence.sa.gov.au/drive25 NEW REMOTE BREAKAWAY BATTERY MONITORING REQUIREMENTS FOR NSW

For those of you who have vans registered in NSW, read on. All States require that caravans / trailers over 2,000kg GTM also have a breakaway system. A breakaway system is a way of automatically turning your caravan electric brakes on in an emergency. If your caravan was to become uncoupled while towing, the breakaway system has a battery that will operate the brakes for at least 15 mins. In NSW there is an extra requirement that the charge condition of the caravan breakaway battery can be monitored from within the towing vehicle. The monitor must be visible or audible to the driver and indicate that the breakaway system has a charged battery. The laws apply to all caravans registered in NSW. It does not apply to interstate visitors towing caravans registered in another state or territory and travelling through NSW. Remote monitors to can be purchased separately and are available to suit most existing breakaway systems. Forthcoming Social Events

Social Convenor’s Report

Thank you to the eleven members who joined me at Regatta Point for a picnic lunch to celebrate the Melbourne Cup. The weather was perfect and we found a shady spot by the lake for our afternoon together. There was a variety of special hats worn on the day and this added to the excitement of the occasion. Plenty of nibbles were provided and the odd glass of wine was seen to be enjoyed, prior to a variety of lunches, cups of tea and delicious slices.

The sweep was organised by 2 o’clock and some discussion took place regarding the horses that were drawn - with the assistance of those who had studied the form guide, so we had a rough idea of what to expect. A decision was made to pack up our bits and pieces and walk up to The Deck cafe where we could have a coffee and perhaps, watch the race on TV. While there was no TV available, the manager provided us with a radio which he set up outside for us. There was much excitement as the race got started and even more when it finished. Dorothy accepted first prize, on behalf of Joe Cocker, picking up a massive $6 for the win. Gai collected $3 for her second place and Joe Slaats gratefully accepted his $1.50 for third place. Maureen Vavra took out the prize of 50 cents for the horse that ran last (sadly, it was the horse that collapsed and died after the race and my horse injured his leg and was put down). It was agreed by all that it was a good, fun afternoon which, otherwise, would have been spent at home. Thanks again to all who shared this great social afternoon!

Our next social event was on Wednesday 19th November when we met at Adore Tea on O’Hanlon Place in Nicholls at 10:00 am. Adore Tea is a rather different experience for anyone who hasn’t already been there. Just three of us, Anne Dowling, Kathy Barrett and I, took the opportunity to visit this popular venue where we indulged in some beautiful food, chilli chocolate and green tea, with plenty of chatter between sips and mouthfuls. Again, the weather was beautiful for our outing.

On Friday 12th December, we will meet at the Cotter Picnic Ground at 11:00am for a BYO barbeque lunch. Bring a fold up chair, just in case, and wear some comfortable walking shoes if you feel you might like to have a wander.

FOR A GIGGLE … What is Celibacy? Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances. While attending a Marriage Weekend, My wife and I listened to the instructor declare, 'It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other..’ He then addressed the men, 'Can you name and describe your wife's favourite flower?' I leaned over, touched my wife's hand gently, and whispered, ‘White Wings Self-Raising Flour, isn’t it?’ And thus began my life of celibacy … How to tell if your cat is charged …

Vice President John Jenkin welcomed the visitors to the Club: Grant Fowler, Rob and Jennie Lehimius, Andrew and Anne Bray.

On the sick list are: John Peers who is continuing to make slow progress in the Prince of Wales Hospital. He has been visited by a number of people from the club. We are being informed regularly of his progress. Ted Miller was at the meeting and it was lovely to see him out and about.

John Jenkin handed out the membership packages to the following new members, Greg and Margaret Mason, Michael and Carolyn Turner, Tom and Kerry Graf.

Minutes: The minutes of the meeting of 12 October 2014 had been circulated in The Gas Bottle. Peter Schilling requested that the 16 National Rally report be amended to read that the tasks relating to the 2016 National Rally are being coordinated by all members of that committee and not by him. It was moved by Kathy Barrett, in the absence of the Secretary Dorothy Kraft, that the minutes be accepted as amended. The motion was seconded by John Jenkin. Carried.

Matters arising out of the minutes: Nil.

Correspondence:

a. Newsletter from Newcastle Caravan Club.

b. email from SUNMAS - a business involving Dinosaurs.

c. email from Malmsbury Bakery and Gallery, Central Vic encouraging us to stay in Central Victoria,

Tiger proposed that John Peers’ membership be suspended until such time as he is able to resume activities with the Club. The proposal was accepted unanimously.

It was moved by Treasurer Tiger Lyons and seconded by Joe Slaats that the Treasurers Report be accepted. Carried.

Membership Secretary: Kathy Barrett reported that it was pleasing to have the new members join our club this evening. We have another three prospective members in the pipeline.

Members are requested to advise any changes to personal or van information by email or phone to enable the database to be kept up to date. In particular, members are asked to check their van length. Caravan parks need to know the length from the hitch to the rear of the van, including any tyres or tool boxes. Please check the measurements and advise Kathy as soon as possible.

Rally Convenor's Report: Waine Summerfield reported on the following:

Page 10: NOVEMBER 2014 - Canberra Caravan Clubcanberracaravanclub.org/files/gb201411.pdf · Vice President John Jenkin welcomed the visitors to the Club: Grant Fowler, Rob and Jennie Lehimius,

Dalmeny - Thank you to ‘the paparazzi’ - the Gas Bottle reporter, for the great photos from this rally. They are on the club's web site.

Junee 29-30 November. The Club Christmas Party Rally. The Rally is now closed. Anyone who hasn't paid for the dinner and transport, please do so as soon as possible. Gail Welsh has offered to tow the trailer. Ian Sharpe is the Gas Bottle reporter.

Boorowa- New Year’s Eve Rally 30 December 2014-1 January 2015. Please note this is a midweek rally. For those with their names down already, please check that you have the correct arrival and departure dates. There is still room for more people but numbers are needed as soon as possible so that any necessary bookings can be made. A Rally Marshal and Gas Bottle reporter are still required for this rally.

Tumut – 24-26 January 2015. Long Weekend. For our new members and visitors this is our traditional Australia Day rally. There are a lot of activities that happen at this rally. It is the weekend that we have our Iron Man and Iron Woman events in which everybody can participate. We also attend the local Australia Day ceremony in the park. We need 24 vans or more to attend to hold our auction which raises some funds for the club. Members and visitors donate items to be auctioned. We have a traditional BBQ which will be subsidised by the club. Kathy Barrett will be Rally Marshal but a Gas Bottle reporter is still needed.

Bong Bong – The rally sheet will be available at the December meeting. This is a famous race course in the highlands just east of Bowral. Power and water are available as well as showers and toilets along with a good recreation area.

Condobolin - A reminder that this rally is on the Canberra Day Long Weekend. Please put your name on the rally sheet. THIS IS NOT PART OF THE ROVING RALLY. The Roving Rally starts at Lake Cargelligo on Tuesday 10 March. If you are going on the Roving Rally and you would like to attend the Condobolin rally you must put your name down on the Condobolin rally sheet.

Likewise, if you wish to attend the Leeton Rally then you must have your name down on the Leeton Rally Sheet prior to leaving Canberra on the Roving Rally.

Website Convenor: Joe Vavra reported that the Dalmeny photos have been loaded onto the Website.

Joe spoke about the 25 November evening at Road Tech Marine where they will showcase their store and offer a 10% discount for purchases by CCC members. They have also suggested they would like to support the 16th National Rally. Please get behind this evening

The Gas Bottle Editor: Members are reminded that Gas Bottle items should be sent to the following email address: [email protected]. All contributions are welcome.

Social Convenor: Judi Tregonning reported that 12 members enjoyed a picnic lunch at Regatta Point to celebrate the Melbourne Cup.

Wednesday 19 November will see our next social function at Adore Tea at O'Hanlon Place in Nicholls at 9.30am.

It is planned that on Friday 12th December at 11.00am we meet at the Cotter Picnic Ground for a BYO barbecue lunch. Bring a fold up chair and wear suitable footwear if you feel you might like to go for a wander around.

Junee Christmas Party. A reminder to gather your Christmas lights and decorations for your van and your Christmas party table. Remember to bring an unwrapped gift for the 'Giving Tree'. If any young children will be attending the dinner, please bring a wrapped and labelled gift for them so Santa can present it to them. Any dietary requirements should be advised as soon as possible.

National Rally Report: Ray Swift reported that the committee has not met since the last club meeting but following the publishing of the task sheets we have had a number of offers of help. They were Kathy Barrett, Joe and Maureen Vavra, Lance and Barbara Court, Joe Slaats, Bill and

Page 11: NOVEMBER 2014 - Canberra Caravan Clubcanberracaravanclub.org/files/gb201411.pdf · Vice President John Jenkin welcomed the visitors to the Club: Grant Fowler, Rob and Jennie Lehimius,

Anne Brown and Gai Berzins. Jim Donlan, Grant Jarrett, Jim Coates and Phil Bruce were also added over the past few months.

We have had assurance from Ancestry.com that they will join us at the rally to run seminars for those interested in finding out about their past ancestors.

Maureen Vavra has been ferreting away lots of useful information to help her as she takes on the big task of looking after the catering.

National Rally Treasurer - Bob Dal Santo gave a report for the National Rally. It was moved by Bob Dal Santo and seconded by Waine Summerfield that the report be accepted. Carried.

There are 409 vans registered at this point.

Peter Schilling has the latest 16th National Newsletter if anyone would like to look at it.

National Association of Caravan Clubs - Ray Swift attended the AGM and directors’ meetings in Sydney last Tuesday and Wednesday. He said that they were very productive meetings with framework laid down for a more streamlined company meeting twice yearly with an endeavour to better serve the State Associations.

One of the more divisive items thrashed out was funding of the NACC and making a scheme workable and acceptable to all. From January 1 the $5 registration fee will be abolished and from 1 July a levy of $1 per van member will be charged across the board to help finance the Association. Any member wishing to establish that they are a member of a club associated with NACC will register and receive a proof of that membership. That will enable them to receive any of the benefits gained by the association Australia wide including the Ken Tame Insurance scheme. Negotiations have commenced with a number of caravan chains and commercial bodies.

There were reports on past and future national rallies which were most helpful.

It was agreed that the states would assist us to get information out to all caravan club members. We will send information to state secretaries who will forward it on to club secretaries who in turn will circulate to club members. This should ensure that every club member with access to emails will be kept up to date.

Roving Rally Report - Those going on the rally were able to meet at the Canberra Southern Cross Club before our General Meeting.

Joe asked for 2 cheques for payment to Caravan Parks who have requested deposits. Seconded Gordon Ferme. Carried.

General Business:

Heather Ferme, herself a dog owner, reminded everyone that the Club has a strict rule where dogs are concerned. Dogs are not permitted at Happy Hour, in the marquee or at social functions where food is being eaten. It is the dog owner's responsibility to tether their dog and not let it stray to other vans.

Discussion was put forward about guests attending rallies but who were not intending to become members of the Club. Heather stated that we need to follow the constitution. She said that it is appreciated that some prospective members living outside Canberra find it difficult to come to a meeting and this will have to be addressed. The club is missing out on membership because of this problem.

Jim Donlan said he spoke to TruBlu at the Canberra Home and Leisure show and reported that they would like to come to a meeting and give a presentation. Heather Ferme suggested that maybe the February meeting might be a good time. Jim said that TruBlu also suggested they would like to be involved in 2016 National Rally.as a Stall Holder.

Angry Lotto: 1st Prize - Carolyn Turner 2nd Prize - Sue Schilling. $55 went to "Kitty"

Page 12: NOVEMBER 2014 - Canberra Caravan Clubcanberracaravanclub.org/files/gb201411.pdf · Vice President John Jenkin welcomed the visitors to the Club: Grant Fowler, Rob and Jennie Lehimius,

Members were advised that the next meeting will be held on 14th December 2014 at 7.30pm at the Southern Cross Club. Woden.

There being no further business, the meeting was declared closed by the President at 9.05pm.
