The Loudest Applause A celebration of incredible volunteerism and positive ageing, came across at the 2013 Ballincollig Tidy Town awards. At the grand age of 99 Joe Kavanagh still manicures his lawns to a billiard table standard and rightly received a round of applause, matching the levels that greeted the news of the Entente Florale silver award. Joe is a source of inspiration.

In fact all older people are potential sources of inspiration, which helps to be more forgiving about possible foibles. My own father has superb eyesight. A cataract operation was so successful that it meant he no longer had to wear glasses. The only problem was people didn’t recognise him, so he is still bespectacled but noticed! Speaking to him on the phone though is an audible challenge. Gone are the days when you might have talked about the shenanigans of government, it doesn’t matter which colour it is, they are always wrong; or raise issues like Climate Change which to dad is “nothing new under the sun”- it is just the way the weather is.

So my father would not have been applauding the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, saying they are 95% certain it is down to human activity. Not that many of us were actually applauding.

In fact as I listened on the radio, the report left me with a chill creeping down my spine. If I reach my 94th year just before the middle of the century, what will be the state of play? Will governments have been on a war footing and bravely collabo-rated over this volatile certainty, and made sure my last years are spent peacefully in my rocking chair, even possibly tending the lawn? Or will they, as I suspect, continue to flout their green credentials, but not let the issue shape all their policies as a war footing requires? And what about my children’s children who will be the actively ageing in 2090, when the worst outcomes of climate change are predicted? Like many, I vaguely hope technology will save the day. Of course faith in a God who from the beginning brought beauty and purpose out of chaos is the hope I hold on to – I will not be alone when I rock my chair! But faith was never meant for cruise control, easy living. The God who brings order out of chaos is the God of justice. This is a justice issue. Because it is over consumption of the earth’s resources which means there is something new under the sun – some rather unwelcome activity. Therefore I need to pray, act, and speak out. and also to be an example—be someone who may even inspire others to act.

And age is no limit to being a source of inspiration. For the Tidy Town guests it was Joe. For myself and the climate change issue it is Jennifer Sleeman. At over 80, not only is she an example of active ageing, but a godly justice campaigner from Clonakilty, who was the person who I heard say we need to be on a war foot-ing over the issue of climate change. In 2008 she also formed the Sustainable Clonakilty group http://www.sustainableclon.com/ .

Jennifer won’t like a lot of praise, but if we act now, she’s the sort of person who our children’s children will be applauding in 2090 ….please God.

Making Ballincollig Beautiful

Congratulations to Ballincollig Tidy Towns on their silver award for the Entente Florale flower festival. It is not so such competition as to who comes first, like the Tidy Towns awards, but a test to improve the living environment of local cities, towns and villages throughout Europe.

So for Ballincollig to be awarded a silver medal on their first attempt is quite some achievement, especially when you are competing with towns whose councils pay for the work to be done, while in Ireland it is carried out by volunteers .The total amount of hours spent in Ballincollig this last year is estimated at 5,075 which when divided by the minimum wage of €8.65, amounts to a pay bill of €48,000! It must be said though, that the County and City Council did give much assistance to help the Tidy Towns committee.

Church-wide ‘Census’ of the Church of Ireland

population to take place in November

In November, the Church of Ireland will be undertaking a ‘census’ of the worship-ping Church of Ireland population for the first time in many years.

On three Sundays in November (3 November, 17 November and 24 Novem-ber) clergy and parish officials will be attempting to ascertain the age profile and gender profile of those attending services in Church of Ireland Churches throughout Ireland. Worshippers on those Sundays will receive a card on which they will be asked to indicate their gender and age. The card will be completely anony-mous.

The objective of the census is to provide information on the worshiping Church of Ireland population and to enable parishes, dioceses and the Church at an island-wide level to make decisions for the future based on an up to date analysis of the Church of Ireland’s popu-lation.

It is anticipated that the 2013 census will be repeated every three years in order to enable the Church to examine trends in worship attendance and ministry through-out Ireland.

The census allows for parishes and dioceses to collect their own more detailed figures if they wish.

It is anticipated that a summary of the figures will be printed in the Book of Reports for the General Synod in 2014.

So Sunday PM is back again after the summer. This is our weekly group for any-one in secondary school. All are welcome! Our evening usually starts with a cup of tea and chatting as everyone arrives. Then we play a silly game to get us all warmed up and mixing together. This really helps us to break the ice with anyone new who may be there each week as well! Then we often have a short talk and then split into small groups to do some Bible study and discuss

the talk a bit. After that we are all ready for some food and a chance to hang out and to chat together!

This term we are enjoying doing the Youth Alpha course. We are doing this be-cause it gives us the chance to look again at the foundations of our faith. It also gives us a chance to invite any of our friends who might be interested in exploring questions of faith. We are also really excited to welcome some young people who are considering confirmation into Sunday PM and this course is a really good way for them to really think about their faith and if confirmation is right for them at this stage.

The group is currently about 40 teenagers and 5 leaders with about 30 people coming each week. About 2/3 of these would be from families in the parish and the rest are friends who have come along and kept coming, or people who were going to Glow or Glow Max and have started coming to Sunday PM to go a little deeper. We are really excited this term to have three of the teenagers who completed the Growing Leaders course last year joining the leader team as junior leaders.

It would be great if you could pray for us all as we think again about what it means to be a Christian for what we are learning to really help us grow in our relationship with God and to connect faith and everyday life, especially for those who are con-sidering confirmation next year. Please also pray for the leader team, for continued energy and enthusiasm, a new team member would be very helpful as well as we continue to grow and as Katie goes on maternity leave. Finally we long to remain a community who are loving and welcoming, and who live Jesus command “by this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” John 13:35. So it would be great if you could pray for us to keep doing that too! Matt, Katie & the team

Advent non-perishable food collection, starting mid-November, the beneficiaries this year will be

Cork Simon Community, Cork Penny Dinners and Ballincollig branch of St Vincent De Paul.

Bring your contributions any Sunday to any of the three churches.

Blarney Update

November marks my first anniversary in the Parish and I am truly thankful for the love, care and sup-port I have been shown in many ways in the parish over these 12 months. I have been doing a lot of listening, a lot of working and I look forward this year to moving for-ward. This year one of my main priorities is to further develop links within Blarney – figuring out how the church can engage with the community – and share the good news in ways which are helpful. It has been a great joy to welcome a couple of new families along to worship with us within Blarney congregation over the past couple of months. It is my hope and prayer that they may be joined by others as we grow as a church. As we look around at nature we see things growing and developing …. As a church we are called to be a growing church – both in numbers and in depth of our own learning. This is a challenge for us all. It is my prayer that we would be a growing church … but for this to happen we all need to be making links between the communities in which we live and work and what happens on a Sunday Morning. We have just set up a facebook page for Blarney church – please do “like” us! Robert

Ballincollig Shopping Centre Presence ...what’s it all about?

It was Gail that introduced me to ‘acts of kindness’. We gave away biscuit bars in the green in Blarney years ago. Then, when we had Connect 2012, ‘acts of kind-ness’ started in the Ballincollig Shopping Centre. We set up our presence in the empty corner opposite BB’s Café. What happens now is we (parishioners and helpers from the Roman Catholic church in Ballincollig) receive an email from Ian calling a meeting for Connect. There we discuss what ‘acts of kindness’ will hap-pen, depending on the time of year, e.g. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, exam times, Christmas—or some event in the parish. A date is set with Jim O’Leary, Manager of BSC. He is very keen that we keep a presence there whenever we can. People are asked to volunteer with whatever gifts they have, for instance: face painting, making crafts, prayer & blowing up balloons! Giveaways are distributed very quickly. I think we must have broken the record last Valentine’s Day—we gave away 100 roses in 10-15 minutes!

Every child loves receiving a balloon, and especially Robert’s. He makes all sorts of animals and objects with them! We do meet people who are willing to talk about their faith whilst their children are having their faces painted. Others just want to know why we are doing this and who is supporting us. Some ask how much it costs, and when we say it’s free you can see how delighted they are to receive something for nothing—and then they’re often happy to talk.

None of this would happen without prayer—so maybe if you feel that handing out a ‘giveaway’ isn’t your thing—well please just pray that God will touch people on the day. I always look forward to this day as it’s a great way to show strangers how we as a church can serve God by serving others in our community. The joy I get from the day is seeing a person’s face light up and smile or just say ‘hello’. I go home with a smile on my own face, knowing God has answered our prayers and guided through an outreach in BSC. Laurel Watts

A few points from the sermon series…

Ian’s Talk (Ephesians 2:11-22) Purpose—’...seeks to be a church for eve-ryone’ Barriers and signs excluding people are every-where, including our hearts, and Jesus came to destroy those barriers in the power of the gospel. We should: • build households with windows—so we are

transparent for all to see • Have strong structures—with Christ as the

cornerstone • Use the spiritual power grid. God is present in

his temple, his body, our church today—this is all hollow without God.

Robert’s Talk (Ephesians 3:1-13) Purpose—following Jesus’ example of serving our community, making disciples. A disciple is like a learner driver who is always wanting to learn to be more competent and open to a deeper understanding, recognising that everything in life can teach us about being a disciple—even if it doesn’t seem obvious. Paul’s discipleship led to him being arrested and jailed. But this was for the benefit of the Ephesian church, and the church to come. In Ephesians 3:7-13 he makes this point twice, at the beginning and the end of the paragraph. In between he is overflowing with the great truths of the grace of the Gospel and the central role of the church in being God’s instrument of grace. In fact—the church is to be the hope of the nations. So Paul uses his imprisonment to inspire the Ephesian church to be disciples and do great things for the Gospel.

Matt’s talk (Ephesians 1:3-14) Purpose—Experiencing the generosity of God Verse after verse speaks about the many blessings of God—He is a generous giver. We experience them with excitement like children waiting for Christmas presents. The blessings of this life are fleeting, such as a lovely day in Kerry can be followed by a drab one the day after! But God’s generous blessing is total and guaranteed now, like a deposit, by the Holy Spirit. The challenge is that we are blessed as we stay in the centre of His will and don’t put ourselves at the centre of the universe. So, for example—are our homes for-tresses to hide away from the world, or places with open doors that are welcoming and mirror God’s generosity? As a church, are we safe enough to heal and dangerous enough to grow?

Dear Friends,

We have now been open for 6 years and we have had many successes and much for which to give thanks!

In the original vision for The Haven, we sought to provide a half-way house between ‘the high street’ and ‘the Church’ for those who found little relevance in existing church models. To this day this principle has remained vital. The means of achieving this has changed as we sought to ride the waves of the financial downturn and the challenges of altering our structures to suit the resources available. What has developed is a fascinating eclectic community of individuals willing, even curious, to dialog with one another about faith, hope and love.

One major change was the decision last June for Padraig and Evanne, Beth and Lindsey to move the Unbound (www.unbound.ie) premises over to Bridge St. in Cork where they have found a very suitable location with greater footfall. Please visit and support them whenever you can as they continue to reach out with a Christian presence in the city (and Killarney too!). The now vacated bookshop portion of The Haven (which belongs to Scripture Union) will be either leased or sold. Please pray that a suit-able “neighbour” will be found!

We continue to focus on simplifying the operating model for The Haven Café, and we now run it with staff from employment schemes, in coop-eration with The Bridge as before, with Tim Jenkinson supervising. The staff are resilient and hardworking and we are providing a place where people can get back on their feet after challenging times in their lives. We feel that God is very much at work in people’s lives and our ability to serve them in this way is a direct continuation of our original calling as Tim and Sr. Bridget continue to provide a strong Christian presence.

Page 11: November 2013 2

We continue to host four Toddler groups on weekday mornings, provide space for a number of groups who provide services to the surrounding community and host three different ethnically diverse church groups on Sundays and a number of other meetings during the month.

The Open-Mic nights which provide many people with an alcohol free music zone every Friday night recently celebrated its first anniversary and is a popular community amateur and impromptu music venue! It even has its own Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Havenopenmic) and you can sample some of the acts from its first anniversary celebration on http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/39755572.

The Counselling service which provides a professional service to many clients and a training venue for trainee counsellors continues to grow and is also providing an essential source of income to pay the on-going costs of the mortgage.

We know that many of you have been very faithful supporters of The Haven over these last years and we do hope that you will continue to support us and Padraig and Evanne in Unbound in any way you can. We would both be deeply grateful for any extra prayer and financial support possible which would allow the Christian witness and ministry of The Haven to continue and grow.

With thanks for your support and understanding as we continue to serve the people of Cork and Munster. In faith,

Bill Lane, Tim Jenkinson, Sr. Bridget Dunne, Trustees – Cork Christian Trust.
