If resale is your biggest concern, a minor kitchen update may enhance resale opportunities more than adding a home office. 2. Decide how to finance the renovation. There are three basic options: refinancing, home-equity loans and home-improvement loans. If you have little or no equity in your home, lenders are more apt to approve a home-improvement loan, which usually costs an extra point (percentage of the loan). Refinancing is taking out a larger mortgage than you had before, but the loan is based on the projected increase in value of the home after renovations. Home equity loans are similar but usually carry lower closing costs offset by paying a half a point at closing. To see which financing option works best for you, have your bank calculate and compare the price of the loan, closing costs, and future interest costs. 3. Avoid credit card debt. Don’t ever finance a home-improvement project with a credit card. Interest payments are not deductible, and the interest rates are too high. Remodel With A Sound Financial Blueprint

Home renovations need to be planned with care. You don’t want to spend so much money improving your home that it becomes significantly more expensive than other homes in the neighborhood.

Here are some strategies for planning a remodeling project that makes financial sense:1. Decide what your primary objective is. If resale is

your biggest concern, a minor kitchen update may enhance resale opportunities more than adding a home office.

Improving Window SecurityIf you have double-hung windows, make your home

safer by following this suggestion from the Yonkers, NY, Police Department: With the window closed, drill a hole, angling it downward, through the top corners of the inner frame, partially into the outer frame. Insert a heavy pin or nail. This will prevent the window from being opened from the outside.

If You Could Take It With You . . .A very wealthy man was lying on his deathbed. He had

worked so hard all his life to attain his great wealth that he hated the thought of leaving it all behind.

Suddenly he saw a bright light, and an angel appeared over his hospital bed.

“Please,” the rich man said. “I tried to do so much good with the money I’ve made in my life—couldn’t I please bring some of it with me to Heaven?”

“You know the rules,” the angel said. “You can’t take it with you.”

“But I built roads and hospitals and schools all over the world!”

“Hmm . . .” The angel thought about it. “Well, maybe just this once.”

So that man instructed his lawyer to liquidate as much of his accumulated wealth as possible and buy gold bars. When his time came, he had two heavy suitcases full of gold lying next to his hospital bed. Then, in a flash, he arrived at the Pearly Gates, a suitcase in each hand.

“What’s this?” asked St. Peter when he came out to process the man.

“The angel said I could bring this in with me,” said the tycoon.

St. Peter opened the suitcases, saw the gold, and stared at the man in surprise. “You brought a sidewalk?”

Watch For Sugar Hidden In FoodsYou know that avoiding sugar is one key to

maintaining your weight and your health. But do you know all the supposedly “healthy” foods that sugar can be hiding in? Be on the lookout for these hidden sources of unnecessary sugar in your diet:✦ Salad dressing. A dressing that’s low-fat or fat-free can

contain 5-7 grams of sugar per serving. ✦ Flavored yogurt. Yogurt may provide protein, but the

fruity varieties often include up to 25 grams of sugar per 6-ounce serving. Buy plain yogurt and add your own fruit instead.

✦ Pasta sauce. Commercial pasta sauces frequently add sugar as a flavor enhancer. Skip those that list sugar among the first three ingredients.

✦ Granola bars. Oats, nuts, dried fruits are all good, but the extra sugar added to most granola bars (along with trans fats) can undercut their nutritional value.

Taking An Obstacle... And Created An Opportunity

Good ideas can be found in the most unexpected places. Here are two business ideas that sprang from challenges that would have meant failure to most people:★ During the construction of a high-speed railway line in

northern Japan, a long tunnel had to be drilled through Mount Tanigawa. Water from the snows melting on the mountain’s peak seeped into the tunnel, and engineers had to design a system to drain it. One maintenance worker suggested bottling the pure mountain water and selling it. The water was marketed under the name Oshimizu, sold in vending machines at train stations, and went on to encompass fruit juice and tea products sales of $50 million a year by the mid-1990s.

★ An entrepreneur went to California during the Gold Rush the 1840s to seek his fortune, but instead of panning for gold, he planned to sell tents to the thousands of treasure hunters. To his disappointment, the weather was so mild that most of the miners were able to sleep out in the open instead of investing in his tents. So he cut up his products and used the thick cotton material to stitch heavy, durable work pants. They became a hit, and the man’s name, Levi Strauss, is a household name today.

Talking TurkeyHere are some interesting facts about turkeys:

• Turkeys are native to North and Central America; fossilized remains of the birds date back 10 million years.

• Domesticated turkeys cannot fly. Wild turkeys can fly short distances at 55 miles per hour; they can run at speeds of 25 miles per hour.

• Wild turkeys live in hardwood forests with grassy areas. They roost in trees.

Cranberries Can Improve Skin ToneIf you'd like your skin to have a rosy, healthy glow for

the winter, ask for extra helpings of cranberry salad this holiday season or drink cranberry juice. Nutritionists say that the high levels of Vitamin A and antioxidants in the tart berries help regenerate skin cells and improve skin health and tone.

Let’s Talk TurkeyTurkey is the traditional choice for

Thanksgiving dinner (and Christmas!). As you, your family, and friends sit down to your meal, feast on these facts about this popular poultry:‣ What’s in a name? Turkeys are native to North

America. According to various sources, the word “turkey” comes from: its Native American name “firkee”; the word “tuka,” the Tamil word for “peacock,” coined by Christopher Columbus when he mistook the bird for a type of peacock (it’s actually a member of the pheasant family); the first birds being shipped to England through the country of Turkey (by the Spanish) and being mistaken for another bird with the same name from Africa. By any name, they’re delicious.

‣ Yes, turkeys can fly. Wild turkeys, that is. Domestic turkeys are bred and raised to be so heavy they can’t take flight, but wild turkeys can fly at up to 55 mph for short distances. They can also run at a top speed of 20-25 mph.

‣ Order your turkey early. About 45 million turkeys are consumed every Thanksgiving. The average Thanksgiving turkey weighs about 15 pounds. Approximately 20 million turkeys are the main course at Christmas dinner.

Quote“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” -John Fitzgerald Kennedy
