Food Facts by Lorraine Mace

We are bombarded daily with information about how to maintain a healthy diet, but

how many of the so-called facts we take as gospel are really true?

Frozen or tinned fruit and vegetables are not as nutritious as fresh

This all depends on how the fresh produce has been kept. If it has languished in the fridge for a week then it may not even have as much nutritional value as tinned or frozen. Generally speaking, though, frozen or tinned produce has as many vitamins as fresh.

Vegetarians don’t eat enough protein because they avoid meatVegetarians usually eat a wide variety of protein-rich foods, such as legumes, dried peas, beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds and soy products.

All fibre prevents heart diseaseStudies have shown that it’s only soluble fi bre, found in products such as oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, lentils, apples, strawberries and citrus fruit that appears to lower cholesterol.

Insoluble fi bre, found in wheat bran, whole grain products, fruit and vegetables, hasn’t been directly linked to boosting heart health, but it is believed to help prevent certain cancers, such as colon cancer, so has other health benefi ts.

All vegetable oils are good for the heartThis is a sweeping statement and one often quoted, but not all vegetable oils are good for you.

Coconut, palm and palm kernel oils (often found in packaged goods, such as biscuits and cakes) contain saturated fats, which can be detrimental to maintaining a healthy heart. The same is true of vegetable oils which have been hydrogenated (or partially hydrogenated). It’s essential to read the nutrition panels on labels. The words ‘partially hydrogenated’ indicate the inclusion

of trans-fatty acids, which aren’t good for your heart.

On the other hand, extra-virgin olive oil, canola, saffl ower, sunfl ower and corn oils contain polyunsaturated fats, which are believed to help lower cholesterol. The same goes for peanut oil, but that should only be used if you are certain there is no one in the family with a peanut allergy.

A low-fat diet guarantees weight loss Low-fat does not necessarily mean low-calorie. If we’re talking about a low-fat diet with a high intake of fruit, vegetables and fi bre-rich foods, then yes, the title might well be true because they not only are low-calorie but are also fi lling.

But what about the huge array of low-fat products calling to us from the supermarket shelves? We need to read the labels instead of assuming that they’ll be good for weight loss. Many of these products have a high sugar content. Another thing to look for is the fi bre content. If this is low then you may feel hungry soon after eating because it isn’t fi lling enough. After all, pure sugar is fat free but nobody is going to believe that will fi ll you up and help you lose weight.

As with most things in life, exercising commonsense is the best guide to healthy living.

Local charity The Trussell Trust has launched its biggest ever Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Last year The Trussell Trust took 3,882 Christmas shoeboxes fi lled with gifts to Bulgaria’s poorest and most marginalised people. In the past year the Trust has met more people in desperate poverty across Bulgaria. To give these people Christmas gifts the charity needs Salisbury people to donate more gift-fi lled shoeboxes than ever.

Bulgaria Operations Manager Rich Parsons says: ‘The joy brought by a Christmas Shoebox is hard to describe. For people who have almost nothing, a shoebox fi lled with simple things like toothbrushes and teddies makes a big difference. We’ve returned to poor communities to give them Christmas Boxes and found their shoeboxes from the previous year displayed in pride of place. Many of the people we give shoeboxes to have been abandoned or rejected, these Christmas gifts help them know that someone cares.’

Rich adds: ‘This year we have the opportunity to visit more poverty-stricken communities with shoeboxes, but to be able to give out more gifts we need people in the Salisbury area to donate more. That’s why we’re asking everyone who gives a shoebox to tell a friend about our appeal. If everyone helps out in this way we could brighten many more Christmases this year!’

Christmas boxes are put together by people in the UK, each shoebox is wrapped in festive paper and fi lled with small gifts such as soap, stationery, gloves, hats, toys and sweets. The Trussell Trust distribute the boxes to orphanages, poor Roma communities, women’s refuges, refugee camps, prisoner’s children, poor rural schools and isolated elderly or disabled people.

Christmas Shoeboxes can be taken to The Trussell Trust at St. Michael’s Community Centre or to The Strawberry Fox in the Cross Keys Shopping Centre.

Firework NightLast year we had a Guy Fawkes night; I just don’t understandHow a little get-together could have got so out of hand,It started in the morning when poor Grandad lost his cheer“Has anyone seen my cashmere scarf? It seems it’s just not here,”He found it, hours later, and let out an anguished cryWhen he saw it on the fire; the kids had ‘borrowed’ it for the Guy,My husband had too much to drink; was making quite a scene,He did something with the cous cous that was verging on obscene, My guests admired the bonfire, where the flames were getting higher,In part, due to my son, who’d put his school books on the fire,My friend said very calmly, “Look, we haven’t got that long,Calm down and have a drink, ‘cos nothing else can now go wrong,”Then a shout came from the garden; in a voice so loud and clear,“Look! Grandpa’s going to try to launch a rocket from his rear...”

Motion SlicknessCouch potatoes beware: games want to make you move

So which should you choose? If you’ve already got an Xbox or a PlayStation then it makes sense to go with the appropriateadd-on for your system; however, if you’re buying a brand new console then there are other issues to consider - not least the rumour that

the Wii will be replaced with a Wii 2 next year. Both Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move are still taking their baby steps, so if you’re in the market for a new console we’d suggest going for the one that has the games you want to play now.

Whether it’s making a fool of yourself playing virtual sports or kids petting virtual animals, modern consoles want to make you move.

Nintendo started it with the Wii, whose easy, motion-controlled games made it a firm family favourite and the most successful of the current crop of consoles. Now Microsoft and Sony want a piece of the action. Microsoft’s offering is called Kinect, while Sony has PlayStation Move.

Both inventions are add-ons for existing hardware, so Kinect is for the Xbox 360 while Move is for the PlayStation 3, but they work in very different ways. Move is a combination of Wii-style wireless controllers and a webcam, while Kinect doesn’t use controllers at all.

Let’s look at Move first. The key component of Move is the PlayStation Move Motion Controller (£34.99), which looks like a TV remote with a golf ball stuck to it. That ball - called the Orb - changes colour if there is more than one player so that the system can tell one player from another. The PlayStation Eye camera (£24.99) tracks the orb(s) and decides where you are, while motion sensors within the controller work out where you’re pointing it and how fast you’re moving it. Depending on the game that means your motion controller could be a tennis racket, a sword, a gun, a karaoke microphone

or anything else games designers come up with. For traditional gaming you’ll also need the navigation sensor, which costs a further £24.99.

Kinect takes a slightly different approach. Its sensor bar (£129.99) does all the work, so you don’t need to hold anything at all: you can drive a car by holding your hands in a steering wheel shape, or play dancing games by actually dancing. Kinect can use facial recognition to log you into Xbox Live and it can track four people’s movements simultaneously.

While both Microsoft and Sony have huge lists of game companies who’ve promised to support their technology, the actual launch line-up of games is pretty thin. As with the Wii it’ll be a while before game developers work out how to use motion sensing technologies to their full potential.

We’ve mentioned the Wii a few times now. Is it obsolete? Far from it. The Wii is still the best-selling games console, and the original Wii sensor has been upgraded with the smoother, more accurate Wii MotionPlus. There’s also the Balance Board that Wii Fit uses to great effect, and Nintendo has also come up with the Vitality Sensor, a finger-mounted pulse detector that nobody seems entirely sure what to do with.

Let’s look at Move first. The key component of Move is the PlayStation Move Motion Controller (£34.99), which looks like a TV remote with

PlayStation Move

XBoX 360 Kinect

If you think video games mean teenagers slumped on sofas - or if you’re a parent hoping a new console will give you a bit of peace and quiet on Christmas Day - then think again: today’s all-singing, all-dancing consoles expect all-singing, all-dancing players too.

Window DressingWindows are everywhere in your home and whether they have an attractive view or not, they deserve to have something special to ‘wear’. Do you want curtains or blinds? Look at the style of your home and complement that. Blinds give neat, modern and simple lines while curtains provide an impression of warmth and softness. When choosing curtain fabric, ensure you don’t skimp on the quantity as too little will spoil the effect. Tie backs are practical as well as decorative, especially if there’s a lot of material in your curtains. The amount of curtain fabric needs to be at least twice as wide as your window. If you have small windows, choose a longer curtain rail to extend further across the wall space. Floor length drapes also make windows appear larger and create an overall look of luxuriousness. For French windows or those with a fabulous view, don’t let the curtains draw attention away from the vista. Something simple and neutral will be practical

and not overwhelming. Stick to shades of one colour, matching or toning with the rest of the room for a neat and classy look.

Remember that repainting your room will be cheaper than buying new curtains, so make sure you are completely happy with them before committing.

Kids CornerWelcome to the NEW Kids Corner which aims to provide information on where to go, things to do and pretty much anything that’s child related! If you would like to advertise or submit an interesting article or event on these pages we would love to hear from you. Call 01725 511098 or email [email protected].

Football For kidsNO! Don’t turn the page over. I hate football as well. Loathe it. Especially the slippery, shiny material they insist on using to make the kit. Why can’t they use a nice cotton or linen? Anyway, despite my allergy to nylon I did manage to enrol my son on a football course last Spring and watched in awe as James, the pony tailed

instructor, managed to hypnotise fifteen children into an orderly line to take a shot at kicking the football into a goal ONE BY ONE. A miracle I thought, as I have never managed to get my two into a neat line even when bribing them with chocolate buttons for tea. Then I watched on as James continued to herd them all from one game to another using the football to make them run, kick, hop, jump and he made them laugh. Children don’t appear to want to rebel when they respect the person teaching them as they just simply want to have a good time and they seem to be comfortable when a lesson is clearly structured and they know what is expected of them. My son made new friends, learnt how to control the ball, accepted nylon plus his confidence rocketed. For me, I think I fell a tiny bit in love with James and his magic powers and have begun dreaming of all the alternative hairstyles that would most suit him.Writer, Mum, wannabe hairdresser (Our lovely Hayley Thornton!)

SALISBURY CATHEDRAL CHOIR’s popular annual open day ‘Be a chorister for a day’ is on Saturday 13 November. An informal and friendly way for boys and girls in school Years 2 - 4 to find out about the fun and opportunities offered by chorister life, the day includes rehearsing and singing alongside the cathedral choir. David Halls, the cathedral’s Director of Music, looks forward to welcoming many youngsters. “The children have a great time with the current choristers. I am particularly trying to reach families with musically talented children who are not aware of the many opportunities being a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral offers. Our choristers are ordinary children from ordinary homes who happen to have a talent for music. Our open day is a good way to show families what a fantastic time choristers have and see for themselves that becoming a chorister here is both desirable and possible.” Any child in Years 2, 3 & 4 who would like to be a chorister for a day is welcome. For further details and an application form email: [email protected] or telephone 01722 555148. The closing date for returned application forms is Saturday 6 November.

JOHN GLEN MP WILL BE HOLDING SURGERIESon the following dates:

Friday 5th November1.30pm - 3.30pm

12 Brown Street, Salisbury

Saturday 13th November 10.00am - 12.00pm

Venue TBA

The past month has included party conference season – my first as an MP – and a very different experience it is too.

The big platform speeches that make the news are just a tiny fraction of what goes on behind the scenes.

So busy was I, participating in fringe debates and meeting representatives from various charities and trade bodies whose interests are aligned with those of my constituents, I spent no time at all in the main hall listening to the various calls to action!

However, I know from my postbag and email inbox exactly what the people of Salisbury made of some of the headline-grabbing announcements and will be working hard in the coming months to make their voices heard in Westminster.

I didn’t stay long at conference before slipping away from the hurly-burly to take part in an international defence roundtable, related to my membership of the Defence Select Committee.

Back in the real world, the brief recess gave me a chance to spend more time in Salisbury, visiting dozens of constituents and organisations and performing the opening ceremony of Landford Village Hall’s new meeting room.

A recent interview on Spire FM, reflecting on my ‘settling-in period’ as Salisbury’s MP, gave me pause for thought. Casting back through my memory and reviewing my diary of engagements, I realised that I was closing in on my 1,000th appointment and had written nearly 2,000 letters to – and on behalf of – constituents.

If you want to help me on my way to these milestones, or have anything you wish to discuss with me, do get in touch!

Spice of Life - Star AniseThis attractive and unusual star-shaped spice is the fruit of an evergreen tree related to the magnolia. The rays of the star are seed pods. Picked before it ripens, the stars are dried and sold whole or ground. The flavour is stronger and more bitter than aniseed and star anise is used extensively in Chinese cooking. In the East, where it grows, it is used in much the same way as aniseed is used in the West; for flavouring confectionery and drinks.

For an authentic Chinese taste, star anise can be added whole to the dish during cooking. It is an ingredient of the ready-made spice mixture called “Chinese Five Spices”. This blend commonly contains star anise, cloves, cinnamon, fennel and Szechuan pepper. Star anise works well with pork and duck dishes.

Star anise is often made into a tea as a remedy for rheumatism and also used as a digestive aid. It also has diuretic properties. A chemical extracted from star anise is used to create the influenza drug, Tamiflu® and with the recent epidemics, there have been temporary shortages of the spice. Now the chemical is created artificially.

You could also add this pretty spice to pot-pourri for its attractive appearance as well as its scent.
