Roger Bulla Survives KR-2 CrashWe are down to two Rand Robinson KR-2s on the Western Slope after a mishap at the 5th Annual KR Gathering at KMVN,Mount Vernon, Illinois, last month.

One pilot crashed on landing in the am, caught by gust on landing, and about eight hours later GJT pilot Roger Bulla setdown in a bean field after reporting that he would not make the runway. Roger’s Rand Robinson design was totaled, butthank goodness, Roger was not. Banged and bruised with 5 broken ribs, he cautions us to heed his mishap and haveplenty of fuel aboard.

Roger’s KR-2 flew about 3 ½ hours on a full tank. At just 3 hours however, and miles short of the runway, things becamevery quiet as the engine quit. He clipped the top of trees and nosed into a bean field 1 ½ miles short of the airport, the KR-2 disintegrating around him. That was the bad news.

The good news was that Roger had the presence of mind to immediately radio his situation. A Medivac helicopter was justdeparting the airport and upon hearing his transmission altered course, headed in his direction, and actually witness thecrash. “I was separating myself from the collapsed fuselage and people were there right now. I was alone maybe one anda half minutes.”

The chopper had Roger to the hospital in St. Louis in another few minutes. How is he now? “I flew that plane for 22 yearsand loved every minute. I think I just might look around for another KR-2 project,” remarked Roger. We send Roger bestwishes for a speedy recovery.
