// The Cheek, (formally known as Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds) had great critical acclaim in 2008 with the release of their EP ‘Slow Kids’, being warmly received by the likes of NME and Q magazine. A classic 5 piece indie band with a sound delightfully similar to that of Britpop’s finest; their eagerly anticipated debut album is due for release in early 2010. Don’t miss the chance to get an exclusive preview of new tracks from this quirky bunch on Sunday 1st November before everybody else falls in love with them too.

// Amy Studt recorded her first demo at the age of 14, leading to her being signed to major label Polydor. After varying levels of success over the years, Amy’s back to rekindle our love for angst-y girl rock and going it alone. Once named the UK’s answer to Avril Lavigne, Amy now adopts a harder edged and more mature sound than her mid-teens pop phase. Think more along the lines of PJ Harvey and Kate Bush and you’d be getting close, catch Miss Studt at The Joiners on Monday 9th November.

// Coining their name from the nearest exit of the M4 to their home town, The Joiners welcomes Reading’s Exit Ten on Thursday 19th November. The bands cited influences range from the likes of Killswitch Engage and In Flames to Muse, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley. Having played both V and Download festivals this summer, and with Kerrang proclaiming that ‘If there’s any justice in the world, they’ll be f**king huge’, Exit Ten will are set to blow your mind.

// Screaming and shouting their way onto the music scene, Towers of London hit the scene hard in 2005 with their debut album ‘Blood, Sweat and Towers’. Their music is a mix of post punk rock with a pinch of heavy metal. Since their most recent album ‘Fizzy Pop’ (released October last year), Towers of London have been fairly quiet, until now that is. This one’s definitely for fans of brash hardcore rock ‘n’ roll as they end their ‘Back to Basics’ tour at The Joiners on Sunday 29th November.

// HAUNTED STEREO - CROSS THE SEA EP LAUNCH// Haunted Stereo make the kind of music that’s perfect to listen to on massive headphones and lets you disappear into your own world. However live they’re a different outfit, the kind of band that capture the audience’s attention and keep it for the whole show. Formed in 2007, they’ve released two EPs, ‘In Bars’ and ‘Tree House’, with the title tracks of both have been played on Xfm and BBC6 Music, amongstothers.

The band uses more then 15 instruments between them, with a copious amount of different layers and the contrast of male and female vocals adding another interesting element to this talented bunch. They’ve garnered rave reviews for their new release ‘Cross The Sea’, with fans such as Q music proclaiming ‘It’s so lovely when you discover something genuinely beautiful’. All proceeds of the single version of ‘Cross The Sea’ will go straight to Amnesty International. If you’d like to support Amnesty’s campaign for Human Rights then you can download the track exclusively for just £1 from: http://amnestybrighton.bandcamp.com/track/cross-the-sea-2

They’ll be headlining The Joiners at the ‘Cross The Sea EP’ launch on Saturday 28th November, alongside Thomas Tantrum, The Moulettes and Woven Bird.

// THE MODERN FIGHTING VEHICLES// The Modern Fighting Vehicles are a four piece indie/alternative band who formed in 2005 and have been consistently working hard and promoting themselves. They left University, family and friends to chase their dreams and spent every waking hour writing, preparing and pushing. Since then they’ve performed at over 400 live events from Southampton to Edinburgh, and are now showcasing themselves to the nation as part of the BBC’s introducing program.

They’ve just come back from taking a year out to write and experiment, where they also set up their own independent label ’We Make Records’. The lads are really looking forward to their comeback headline gig at The Joiners, regarding the venue as ‘home’; “We’ve been playing for Uncle Pat and his crew since 2005 and coming back is always a pleasure. Mr Mike Breach behind the desk is the key ingredient, he’s producing our debut record at the moment and no man makes us sound as powerful, like a snappy, phat bass tsunami. We’re looking forward to it big time.”

Their debut single is out on iTunes in January, with a release party to coincide and album to follow. In the meantime you can catch The Modern Fighting Vehicles headlining The Joiners on Friday 27th November, supported by Two Spot Gobi, The Reservoirs & Purple Afros.

// BAND OF SKULLS - 15/10 @ THE JOINERS Thursday night was quite the Southy love-in with home grown talent aplenty playing Band of Skulls homecoming at the Joiners, on the final night of the band’s six date UK headline tour. Drawings’ set saw the crowds grow and grow while I See Sparks indie charms set the mood for the heaving room with a solid set. By the time Band of Skulls took to the stage (fresh from a 3 song set and Q&A session at Solent Uni), the temperature was near melting point. Showcasing songs from their debut album ‘Baby Darling Doll Face Honey’, the evening’s headliners proved why they were sound tracking the next instalment in the Twi light series alongside acts such as Thom Yorke and Grizzly Bear. Songs such as ‘I Know What I Am’ and ‘Fires’ displayed the many faces of the bands own listening, and made for an engrossed crowd. They’ve been compared to many legendary bands old and new, including Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, The White Stripes and Kings of Leon however at the core they simply make good old fashioned rock music at that doesn’t feel dated or out of place in 2009. The comparisons to the aforementioned bands won’t stop anytime soon however it’s onstage where they set themselves apart and we look forward to watching their star rise even higher.

// LOS CAMPESINOS - 22/10 @ THE JOINERSSold out and eagerly anticipated by all those with a golden ticket, Los Campesinos! return to The Joiners was always going to be something of a party. The night began with a song-and power point presentation no less, about Halloween from Rob Taylor, aka Sparky Deathcap. Taylor’s lo-fi style and comic observations were a perfect match for the evenings atmosphere, and only excelled with the introduction of his backing band, his friends and headliners, Los Camp. Next up were Copy Haho (pronounced caw-pee ha-hoe), formed at high school in deepest darkest Stonehaven; all guitars and Ian Curtis stares, they were a perfect complement to the night’s proceedings with current single ‘Wrong Direction’ going down a right treat. Last but not least were Los Campesinos!, playing this tour as an eight piece with Sparky Deathcap on guitar, leaving lead singer Gareth to pose and play as a young Jarvis Cocker. This may only be new member Kim’s second show but old favourites such as ‘We Are Beautiful We Are Doomed’ and ‘Death to Los Campesinos!’ sound as vivacious as they did way back when. A few technical glitches regarding a lead did little to dampen people’s spirits, instead providing a platform for golf ball anecdotes, and general on-stage banter. All together now, ‘Sweet dreams, sweet cheeks, we leave alone…’.
