William Tenney Lindsay, Jr.1924-2007William Tenney Lindsay, Jr. was bornon the fourth of April, 1924 in Scran-ton, PA, the son of William TenneyLindsay and Gladys Axford Lindsay.He graduated Scranton Central HighSchool in 1942 and served in the U.S.Army Signal Corps from 1943 to 1946,participating in the invasion of Oki-nawa and the occupation of SouthKorea.

He received his bachelor’s degreein chemical engineering from Rensse-laer Polytechnic Institute in 1948 andhis Ph.D. in physical chemistry fromM.I.T. in 1952.

His 30-year career at WestinghouseElectric Corporation was at the BettisAtomic Power Division, 1953-1959,and the Research and DevelopmentCenter, 1959 to 1983. He was tnvolvedat an early period in the nuclear gener-ation of power as Supervisor forAdvanced Development Chemistryduring construction of the Shipping-port, PA nuclear power plant. At theWestinghouse Research and Develop-ment Center he was Manager of thePhysical and Inorganic ChemistryDepartment with wide-ranging respon-sibilities.

In later years at Westinghouse, as asenior consultant, he became an inter-nationally recognized expert on thechemical thermodynamics of aqueoussolutions at the high temperatures ofpower plants. He was invited to lecturein Europe including the former Czecho-slovakia, Japan, Australia, Canada andthe United States. In retirement he con-tinued as a consultant to the electricpower industry, 1983 to 2007, working

Notable NewEnglandChemistsby Myron S. SimonA pleasant surprise came to me byemail not very long ago. LauraClaggett, Manager of Knowledge andLibrary Services at UOP LLC, emailedme the following message: “I foundyour name on the web as the NESACSArchivist. While weeding our book col-lection, we found a slim 80 p. volume ofthe ‘Seventy-Sixth meeting of the ACSunder the auspices of the NortheasternSection, Swampscott, MA September10-15, 1928. It is in pristine conditionand it seems a shame to throwit away”.

“Did we want it?” “Of course,” Ireplied that we would very much liketo have it and thanked her for her kind-ness.

The book arrived this morning,and it is a historical delight. It wasmeant as a souvenir of the meeting, andI am sure that there still must be copieson book shelves around Boston, since itis nicely bound and doesn’t take upmuch room. I am equally certain thatthere are not any chemists still aroundwho attended that meeting, but I hopethat there may be some alive who haveseen this little book already, and rel-ished its contents.

The book includes the entertain-ment program of the meeting ... yes, themeeting did include a golf tourna-ment..., boating and fishing , tennis,and even flying,, “Boston by Air”, a 20minute trip over Boston and the neigh-borhood with the “Associate Aircraftof Boston”, in a 10-passenger 3-motorplane, for what was at that time thehigh price of $10. There was, however,no mention of scientific papers.

The real treats are the biogra-phies of “Notable New EnglandChemists” by Lyman G. Newell, BU,and Tenney L. Davis, MIT. The biog-raphies start with John Winthrop,Jr., and go up to Charles William Eliot,1834-1926 and Theodore William

Richards, 1868-1928.With the permission of our editor I

plan to publish the biographies andother interesting bits in future issues ofThe Nucleus. ABSTRACTPeer-led Team LearningWe will discuss a model of learningchemistry and other sciences thatencourages students to join an intellec-tual community, accommodates diverseapproaches to learning, and harnessesthe power of peer interaction to helpstudents build conceptual understand-ing and succeed in their coursework.The Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL)

model provides an active learningexperience for students, creates newleadership roles for students, andorganizes faculty/student partnershipsto catalyze change in educational prac-tice. A modest reduction in traditionallecture or recitation time makes roomfor a weekly peer-led workshop wherestudents solve problems and debateand discuss scientific ideas. The work-shops are guided by students (peer-leaders) who have done well in thecourse previously and are trained for

their leadership roles. We will lead apanel discussion on the origins of thePLTL model; its impact on students,peer-leaders and faculty; and lessonslearned about facilitating change in theway we teach and students learn; andpotential for continued growth anddevelopment of the model. ��

AuthorBiographiesDavid K. Gosser, Jr.

David K. Gosser, Jr. is Professorof Chemistry at The City College ofNew York (CCNY), the flagship col-lege of the City University of NewYork. He received a B.S. in Chemistryfrom St. Joseph’s University (Philadel-phia) in 1981 and a Ph.D. in PhysicalInorganic Chemistry from Brown Uni-versity in 1986. He is the author of thewidely used monograph “CyclicVoltammetry: Simulation and Analysisof Reaction Mechanisms,” and hasused electrochemical methods to for-mulate the widely accepted “inner-sphere electron transfer catalyzeddecomposition” model for the mecha-nism of action of the anti-malarial drugartemisinin. Dr. Gosser founded thepeer-led team learning (PLTL) modelfor General Chemistry at CCNY, and,with support from the NSF’s SystemicChange in Chemistry and NationalDissemination programs, has led theeffort to develop the PLTL model andto disseminate PLTL to general chem-istry and other chemistry sub-disci-plines, as well as to other scientificdisciplines. He is currently ProjectDirector of a Howard Hughes MedicalInstitute Undergraduate Science Edu-cation grant at CCNY, and is the authorof a new textbook, General Chemistryfor Peer-led Team Learning, a “smallfootprint” book which fully integratestextual readings and active learning. Two-Day Short Course: LABORATORY HEALTH AND SAFETY Sponsored by the NESACS Committee on Continuing Education.

Designed to Improve the Skills and Marketability of Practicing B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. chemists,

at a registration fee about half of that charged at National ACS Meetings.

Laboratory Safety has become a concern of ever increasing importance, with many laboratory operations becoming substantially altered from traditional practices due to safety considerations. Yet few chemistry

practitioners have had any formal training in this area. This Short Course, which has been offered

successfully at numerous professional meetings since 1985, is being made available to the Northeastern Section at a tuition fee greatly reduced from that normally charged at National and Regional Meetings.

and Animal Hazards; Handling Glassware; Eye and Face Protection; Planning for Emergencies; Handling

Equipment Display; Needs Assessment; Employee/Student Involvement; Safety Program Planning;

Questions and Answers.

INSTRUCTOR: Christina Dillard has extensive experience as an EHS specialist with a broad background in

laboratory safety, including chemical, biological and radiological safety, hazardous waste disposal and

emergency response. In addition to serving as the Assistant Director of The Laboratory Safety Institute,

headquartered in Natick, MA, she is a faculty instructor and EHS consultant providing safety training and

services to laboratory professionals in industry and academia. She has received excellent reviews for her

presentations of this program to numerous diverse groups. The Committee on Continuing Education feels

fortunate to be able to present this training program by a pre-eminent authority from this Section.

IntroductionThe history of chemistry in Argentina, both education andindustry, was described in “Chemistry in Argentina” byProf. Maximo Baron (Chemistry International, Volume 22,No. 4, July 2000, pages 97 - 101.) This article was our intro-duction to chemistry in Argentina, and to the AsociacionQuimica Argentina. (AQA). Contact with the author led to amutual exchange of information, ideas, and enthusiasm forchemistry.

In October, 2006, one of us (DJE) visited AQA head-quarters to begin an in-depth exchange with many outstand-ing ambassadors of chemistry in Argentina. One of theoutcomes of that meeting was a request by members of theAQA for information from members of the AmericanChemical Society (ACS) about the programs and services itprovides to its members. It is our intention to share our pro-fessional organization’s approach to serving chemists andthe chemical profession in the hopes of encouraging cross-fertilization of approaches between chemical communities.

This interaction comes at a fortuitous time. Asimproved communication and transportation technologiesshrink our world, national organizations are expanding theirhorizons to include international relationships. ACS is noexception, and is broadening its international activities.

The Publications Division and Chemical AbstractsService (both divisions of ACS) are fully international, andderive more than half of their revenue from outside theUnited States. Other parts of the organization, especially theCommittee on International Activities, are actively workingto create international partnerships, protect the rights of sci-entists and engineers, and address the needs and interests ofscientists in developing countries (Chemical and Engineer-ing News, January 15, 2007, page 54).

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has long recog-nized the importance of Latin America, and in fact offersmany resources for chemists in this area of the world (seewww.science.oas.org/RLQ/). Química (quimica.wikispaces.com), a freely available web site, was recently created incooperation with national chemical societies throughoutLatin America to build community among those interestedin chemistry in this region.

One reason for this interest is the continued growth ofthe chemical industry in this region, caused by ample re -sources and strong demand for chemicals. With a chemicalenterprise valued at more than US$100 billion annually, andwith more than 20% of U.S. chemical and related productexports being shipped to the region, Latin America is animpor tant contributor to the world’s chemical enterprise. Infact, recent studies show that more projects are in the works,or at least under study, in Latin America than in Asia. (Chem -ical and Engineering News, January 8, 2007, pages 19-20.)

American Chemical Society: Founding and FinancingThe American Chemical Society (ACS, chemistry.org) wasformally founded in 1876 to “bring chemists together in sci-entific and social intercourse, to establish a reference libraryand a chemical museum, and to secure rooms for these pur-poses.” Thirty-five chemists attended the initial meeting inNew York on April 6, 1876, at which the constitution andbylaws were adopted.

Over more than 125 years, the ACS has grown toinclude almost 160,000 individual members, and to have an -nual operating revenues of over US $400 million. ACS hasevolved to include many different facets, and serve the needsof a wide constituency with a large staff. The ACS headquar-ters in Washington, D.C. is home to about 700 staff members(the majority of whom are in the publications division). Morethan 1,000 additional employees work at Chemical AbstractsService (CAS, cas.org), located in Columbus, Ohio.

Very early in its history, ACS began publishing, notonly the scientific papers presented at its meetings, but alsoabstracts of other papers and structural databases. The publi-cations division of ACS (pubs.acs.org) currently publishesalmost 70 journals that cover more than 20 scientific areas.The first of these, the Journal of the American ChemicalSociety, began publication in 1879, and in 2006 publishedover 1500 articles. All ACS journals now offer online sub-mission for authors, online peer review, and web-based sub-scription services.

Since 1907, CAS has indexed and summarized chem-istry-related articles from more than 40,000 scientific jour-nals, in addition to patents, conference proceedings andother information sources. CAS provides pathways to pub-lished research in the world’s scientific literature, includingvirtually everything related to chemistry, as well as a widevariety of data in the life sciences and other disciplines. Intotal, abstracts for more than 25 million documents are nowaccessible online through CAS. The annotated databasesthat result from this work are available to the chemical com-munity on a subscription basis.

This early start and comprehensive coverage gave ACSa large database of information, and provided a solid finan-cial foundation. One of the things that differentiates ACSfrom most professional societies is its funding model.Almost 90% of the society’s income comes from informa-tion services (CAS and Publications). Membership duesmake up a small percentage of the organization’s operatingrevenue. In return for their annual dues (currently US$136),members receive discounts on ACS publications and infor-mation services, can develop their skills and careers throughservices and networking opportunities, and can grow profes-sionally by attending professional events.

The information technology landscape is changing, andACS is adapting. With both CAS and the Publications divi-sion, a delicate balance must bemaintained between allowingthe broadest possible distribution of scientific information,and protecting the quality of that information. For example,current practice for most ACS journals is to allow authors,upon publication, to distribute up to 50 free e-prints of theirpublished articles to interested colleagues. After 12 monthsthe access restriction is lifted, allowing unlimited, freeaccess to such articles via those same author-directed links.A new program, Authors Choice, which was announced inDecember, 2006 allows the author of an accepted article tosponsor immediate open access, or free distribution, for theirarticle. Time will tell if authors and institutions are willingto pay to allow immediate open access to their articles.

Chemical Biology, an ACS journal, is experimentingwith new electronic features, including Ask the Expert, acollaboration wiki, and a glossary of chemical and biologi-cal terms. Local Sections and Regions Develop Geographic Com-munitiesDuring the very early years of the ACS, communication andtravel across the country (the United States is about 3.5times the area of Argentina) were slow and difficult.Because of this, local chemists in New York, where themeetings were held, tended to dominate the society eventhough it had a national charter. Frustration with this led tothe formation of the Chemical Society of Washington in1884, by chemists in that area. Eventually, the national soci-ety reorganized to form the best of both worlds - a single,national, organization with many local sections.

Local sections are a great way for groups of chemistswho are geographically close together to organize, network,and advance professionally. Each member of the ACS isautomatically assigned membership in one of the 189 localsections. Each local section covers a small geographic area,ranging from one major city to parts of several states,depending on the population density of chemists. Local sec-tions range in size from small (having fewer than 200 mem-bers) to very large (which have 3,200 members or more).Local sections receive some funding from the nationalorganization - a basic allotment plus a small additionalamount for each registered member. Most local sections alsocharge dues, ranging from US$2 to US$15 per year. Thenational organization provides leadership training for localsection officers, ideas for programs and outreach activities,tour speakers, web site hosting, and more.

Local sections elect their own officers, publish newslet-ters, hold regular (usually monthly) meetings, organize out-reach activities that expand the public’s understanding ofchemistry, and much more. Local sections allow chemistsand chemical professionals to connect with others in theirgeographic area, enhance their own professional develop-ment, and organize and attend technical meetings on topics

of interest to the local community. Some local sections havejoint meetings with other professional societies, which helpsto create connections between disciplines, and between sci-entists.

In addition to local sections, the ACS also divides thecountry geographicallyinto10 regions, eachof which includesseveral states. In each region, a regional organizing commit-tee is responsible for hosting an annual or biannual meeting.Regional meetings generally attract between a few hundredand a few thousand chemists, depending on the region, andlast 3 to 4 days. Regional meetings consist of a technicalprogram (oral presentations of research projects, grouped bytopic into symposia), workshops on special topics, postersessions, and often award banquets and other special andsocial events. These regional meetings can be an economicalway for members to expand their professional horizons. Technical Divisions Promote Publication, Peer Review,and Professional Discussion In addition to the geographic organization of local sectionsand regions, ACS members also participate in divisions byareas of professional interest. Each ACS member chooses towhich of the 33 professional divisions they will belong. Onaverage, each member belongs to about one division, withthe Organic, Analytical Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistrydivisions having the most members. Divisions charge duesranging from US$8 to US$55 per year, elect their own offi-cers, and are responsible for fostering face-to-face exchangeof information between chemical professionals with similarinterests.

The majority of this takes place via topical program-ming at national meetings (see below). Newsletters andweb sites keep members informed of current events, confer-ences, publications, and more between meetings. For exam-ple, the Chemical Health and Safety division coordinateselectronic bulletin boards, listservs, and publishes a journal(Chemical Health and Safety), which is sent to all divisionmembers. CHAS covers issues ranging from safety (OSHA)and environmental (EPA) regulations to safe handling ofhazardous waste, from the latest innovations in effectivechemical hygiene practices to rulings on safety-related law-suits. For example, the newsletter of the Chemical Healthand Safety Division recently published an article entitled“Global Harmonization System and Chemical Hazard Com-munication”, which described significant changes on thehorizon for all Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) usersand preparers. The Division of Chemical Education spon-sors the US National Chemistry Olympiad, and providesstandardized tests for the field of chemistry.

A small number of divisions are organized around othertopics, such as Chemical Technicians, Business Develop-ment & Management, and Small Chemical Businesses. Eachallows a group of chemists with similar interests to shareinformation with their professional peers, both formally(oral and poster presentations at national and regional meet-ings) and informally, through newsletters, web sites, andpersonal contacts.

National MeetingsNational meetings, open to all chemists, provide an opportu-nity for members to present research results either orally oron a poster, talk to other scientists in related or different dis-ciplines, and network with colleagues from all over theworld (about 10% of the attendees at a national meeting arefrom outside the United States).

The ACS holds two national meetings each year, one inthe spring and one in the fall.

The main attraction at every national meeting is thetechnical program - lectures and poster sessions presentingthe latest in scientific research on every conceivable topic.Each division organizes sessions on topics that fall into theirareas of expertise. Oral sessions can last from one half-daysession to 5 full days, depending on the amount of interestand number of speakers. Poster sessions are generally heldat night, in conjunction with social hours and networkingopportunities.

Another major part of the national meeting is the Expo-sition, where vendors run booths showing off their latestproducts and services. Many vendors also host educationallectures and social events, or provide sponsorships of tech-nical sessions or social events.

One drawback of national meetings is that no matterhow big they are, the majority of ACS members are unableto attend. However, new methods of electronic communica-tion are enabling the society to provide some of the benefitsof these meetings even to those who are unable to physicallyattend. Some divisions are recording important sessions andposting audio or video on their web sites, others are havingpopular papers re-presented to online audiences. While pio-neering efforts are being made in this area, many questionsremain to be addressed, such as who should have access tothese presentations (anyone, only ACS members, only divi-sion members...), how long presentations should remainonline, whether or not will they be considered prior publica-tion by journal editors, and who will decide which and howmany symposia should be made available. Leadership and Professional DevelopmentThe president of the ACS, elected annually by the member-ship, is its main spokesperson and representative. The maingoverning body is the Council, comprised of councilorselected by each local section and division. The number ofcouncilors varies by size of the local section or division.Councilors serve on the committees that oversee the opera-tions of the national organization. Serving on these commit-tees offers not only a way to give back to the profession, butbuilds relationships between chemists who would never havemet otherwise. Current standing committees include Nomi-nations and Elections, Economic and Professional Affairs,Ethics, Chemical Safety, International Activities, Profes-sional Training, Women Chemists, and Younger Chemists.

The Women Chemists Committee leads the society inattracting, developing and promoting women in the chemi-cal sciences. It sponsors both a breakfast and a lunch at eachnational meeting, where chemical professionals of both gen-ders listen to speakers and discuss topics such as work-life

balance, the art of negotiation, and making career transi-tions. It also provides support to increase the number ofwomen faculty and women chemists in industry.

The Younger Chemists Committee exists to encourageparticipation in ACS by younger chemists (by definition,under 35 years old, or just starting out in their career). YCCmembers, both nationally and in Local Sections supporteach other as they navigate the critical first years of theircareers. Younger chemists bring fresh new ideas to theorganization and are mentored by current ACS leaders.

Student affiliate chapters also exist at many college cam-puses, exposing students to the organization, the profession,and professional chemists, while continuing their education.Student affiliate groups are usually led by a professor, andmay take tours of chemical plants, put on chemistry demon-strations for the public, and organize career fairs.Career Management and DevelopmentOver the years, ACS has developed a number of services toaid chemists as employed professionals, and to help themadvance their careers. Workshops are presented at bothnational and local section meetings on writing resumés,interviewing, and many other aspects of managing a profes-sional career. A Career Consultant Program was establishedin 1990, through which trained volunteer chemists offeradvice and career guidance on an individual basis to anymember who requests it. TheCommittee on Chemistry and PublicAffairs is responsible for advice andrecommendations for ACS action onpublic policy matters involving thechemical sciences and technologies.The Committee on Patents andRelated Matters considers patentsand other related items insofar assuch consideration and possibleaction are appropriate under theSociety’s Charter.

Registration Report and 2009National Meeting Registration Fee• As of August 20, 2008, the ACS fallnational meeting had attracted13,800 registrants. Totals in selectcategories are as follows: Regularattendees 8,196; Students 3,087;Guests 481; Exhibit Only 546; andExhibitors 1,490. In keeping withthe objective of the National Meet-ing Long Range Financial Plan, pre-viously approved by the Board ofDirectors and Council, the Meetingsand Expositions Committee voted tosupport an increase of $10 for the2009 national meetings advance reg-istration fee.

Membership Activity• In 2007, the number of paid newmembers nominated by current ACSmembers was 1,559. Currently,there are 988 paid new memberapplications. The Society’s Mem-ber-Get-a-Member program is ontrack to have its best year ever.

Professional Employment Guide-lines• The Committee on Economic andProfessional Affairs submitted itslatest version of the ProfessionalEmployment Guidelines for consid-eration. These guidelines offer abroad spectrum of recommendedpractices in employment for profes-sional scientists and their employers.The Council will vote on the Profes-sional Employment Guidelines at the2009 spring meeting in Salt LakeCity.

Revision of the Division FundingFormula and Formation of a NewDivision • After a motion to recommit failed,the Council VOTED, as recom-

mended by the Divisional ActivitiesCommittee (DAC), to accept arevised division funding (allocation)formula. DAC reported that the for-mula improves clarity, offers sim-plicity, and rewards collaborativeprogramming between divisions.The change will take effect in 2009for 2008 activities.

• The Council also VOTED toapprove the formation of the Proba-tionary Division of Catalysis Sci-ence and Technology. The primaryobjective of this probationary divi-sion is to provide a “home” for thechemical science of catalysis withinthe ACS in a way that will alsoinsure a continual connectionbetween this science and the essen-tial chemical technology of catalysis.

Special Discussion Item• A special discussion item was put onthe Council agenda by PresidentBruce Bursten. The discussionfocused on Achieving Sustainability(e.g., Energy, Water, Food): Whatcan/should ACS do to address thiskey global scientific challenge? Tokick off the discussion, ACS BoardChair Judy Benham invited Councilto participate in identifying the chal-lenges and developing solutions. Shehighlighted new and ongoing activi-ties, such as the Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions podcasts andrelated information, available onlineat www.acs.org/globalchallenges.She also sought Council input onmember involvement and ACS pro-gramming in support of Goal #3 ofthe Strategic Plan: “ACS will be aglobal leader in enlisting the world’sscientific professionals to address,through chemistry, the challengesfacing our world.” Councilorsengaged in a robust exchange, offer-ing several useful comments andsuggestions to address how the Soci-ety might develop initiatives toaddress sustainability of the world’sresources, including energy, water,and food. Thirty-five councilorsoffered a wide variety of sugges-tions, which will be studied. Coun-cilors and others who have ideasshould send them to [email protected].

ACTIONS OF THE BOARDOF DIRECTORS The Board’s Standing and SpecialCommittees• The Board of Directors receivedreports from its Executive Commit-tee, and the Committees on Grantsand Awards, Public Affairs and PublicRelations, Professional and MemberRelations, and Budget and Finance.On the recommendation of the Com-mittee on Grants and Awards, theBoard VOTED to approve nomineesfor the 2009 Perkin Medal and the2009 Othmer Gold Medal. On therecommendation of the Committeeon Professional and Member Rela-tions, the Board VOTED to approvein principle a proposed alliancebetween the ACS and the RoyalSociety of Chemistry (RSC) entitled,Research in Chemistry for Society/Sustainability (RICHES). On the rec-ommendation of the Committee onBudget and Finance, the BoardVOTED to include funding requestsfor the ACS Leadership Develop-ment System and ACS Green Chem-istry Institute® in the 2009 budget,and to accept the 2008 report fromProgram Review Advisory Group, asamended. The Board also acceptedthe recommendations from the 2008Financial Planning Conference withone modification.

• The Board received a status reportfrom its International StrategyImplementation Task Force and anupdate on plans for a Board-Presi-dential Task Force on Education.The International Strategy Imple-mentation Task Force is charged withimplementing the recently approvedSociety international strategy, andthe Board-Presidential Task Force onEducation will attempt to answer thequestion: “What can a Society with160,000 members uniquely do thatcan have a transformative effect oneducation in the United States?”

Strategic Issue• The Board of Directors continued itsdeliberations of the global scientificchallenge Sustainability (e.g., energy,food, and water) and considered aproposed set of principles from the

of teaching and research in organicchemistry with an emphasis on reac-tion mechanisms and free radicalchemistry. Except for sabbatical yearsas a NSF Faculty Fellow at the Univer-sity of California, Berkeley (1971-1972) and as Fulbright SeniorResearch Scholar at the Albert Lud-wigs Universität, Freiburg, Germany(1979-80), he has been activelyengaged in teaching organic chemistryfrom freshman to postdoctoral fellows.His leadership role in revising theundergraduate curriculum in Chem-istry was recognized by the Universityof Rochester’s Award for Excellence inUndergraduate Teaching in 1974.From 1975-79, he chaired the Chem-istry Department and subsequentlyserved as Associate Dean for GraduateStudies from 1982 to 1985 and Deanof the College of Arts and Sciencefrom 1988 to 1991.

In 1995, Jack Kampmeier andVicki Roth introduced the Peer-ledTeam Learning Workshop in his coursein organic chemistry. Since then, Jackhas been involved in all phases of theresearch, development and dissemina-tion work of the national Peer-LedTeam Learning project supported byNSF from 1995-2005 and led by DavidK. Gosser. He continues to vigorouslysupport the implementation of thePLTL Workshop model in othercourses, disciplines and institutions asa superior way to help students learn.In 1999, Jack Kampmeier received theCollege of Arts, Sciences and Engi-neering Goergen Award for Distin-guished Achievement and Artistry inUndergraduate Teaching and theChemical Manufacturers’ AssociationCatalyst Award for Excellence in Col-lege Chemistry. Since 2005, he hasbeen Professor of Chemistry, “Emeri-tus, but not Retired.”Pratibha Varma-Nelson

Pratibha Varma-Nelson recéeivedher B.Sc. in Chemistry with first classfrom the University of Pune, India, in1970 and a Ph.D. in 1978 from theUniversity of Illinois in Chicago in

Organic Chemistry. The title of herthesis was “Protein Ancestors: Het-eropolypeptides from HydrogenCyanide and Water”. From 1977-1979she studied the effects of essential cat-alytic residue modifications on confor-mation and binding affinity inanhydro-chymotrypsin while she com-pleted a postdoctoral fellowship inenzymology at the Stritch School ofMedicine, Loyola University, May-wood, Illinois. She joined the facultyof Saint Xavier University, Chicago in1979 as an Assistant Professor. In 1992she was promoted to Full Professorand was elected co-chair of the sciencedepartment for a three-year term. AtSXU she taught courses in OrganicChemistry, Biochemistry, and Environ-mental Science. In 2002 she receivedthe SXU Teacher-Scholar Award. Shemoved to Northeastern Illinois Univer-sity in July of 2002 as Chair of theDepartment of Chemistry, Earth Sci-ence and Physics. At NEIU she devel-oped and taught a Capstone Seminarcourse and Biochemistry.

Since 1995 her scholarly activitieshave been focused on exploring alter-native ways of teaching chemistry.Since 1995 she has been involved inthe development, implementation anddissemination of the Peer-Led TeamLearning (PLTL) model of teaching.She was an active partner of the Work-shop Chemistry Project, one of the fiveNSF-supported Systemic Reform Proj-ects in Chemistry. She has been a Co-PI of two NSF-funded NationalDissemination Grants awarded to thePLTL project and part of the manage-ment team of the Multi- InitiativeNational Dissemination (MID) Project.She has co-authored a book, severalpapers, and manuals about the PLTLmodel. Pratibha was the director of theWorkshop Project Associate (WPA)Program, which provided small grantsto facilitate implementation of PLTL,and was the director of the Chautauquacourse on PLTL offered annually from1998-2005. In addition she was afounding Co-PI of the NSF-fundedUndergraduate Research Center, Cen-ter for Authentic Science Practice inEducation, (CASPiE). Pratibha hasserved on the advisory boards of the

Molecular Science Project at UCLAand the Process Oriented GuidedInquiry Learning (POGIL) project. Sheis currently a member of the advisoryboard of Chemical and EngineeringNews (C&EN), a weekly news maga-zine for professionals in the chemicalsciences, and on the editorial board ofthe Journal of Science Education andTechnology.

In August 2008 Pratibha com-pleted a two-year term as a ProgramDirector (rotator) at the National Sci-ence Foundation in the Division ofUndergraduate Education before join-ing Indiana University-Purdue Univer-sity Indianapolis, where she is aProfessor of Chemistry and the Execu-tive Director of the Center for Teach-ing and Learning. ��

He was President of the Pitts-burgh Chemists Club, Chairman of thePhysical Chemistry Group of the Pitts-burgh ACS, as well as, among manyothers, memberships as WestinghouseCorporate Representative: ACS Cor-poration Associates, IUPAC, Interna-tional Committee on Thermodynamicsand Kinetics, International Society forElectrochemistry, Belgian Center forCorrosion. He was US Coordinator forCorrosion in High Temperature Waterand Steam in the US/USSR JointWorking Group on Corrosion.

During his retirement in Hopkin-ton he served in many local activities:Board of Health, Chamber of Com-merce, Historical Society, RepublicanTown Committee, Couples Club andFramingham LLL and Silver Grays.

Lindsay died on November 11,2007. He is survived by his wife,Alice French Lindsay, and two sons,Douglas and Andrew. His sisterEleanor had died earlier.

SummaryHopefully, this perspective has pro-vided some idea of the products andservices the American Chemical Soci-ety offers its members. By offeringmembers several different ways togroup themselves (local sections, pro-fessional divisions, regions), and thenletting those groups govern them-selves, a tremendous amount of flexi-bility is obtained within the overallstructure. Guidelines, best practices,and multiple channels of communica-tion allow groups to share what hasworked with each other, and build oneach other’s successes.

But even with all this flexibility,changing times require changes inpolicies, procedures, and sometimesstructures. ACS overall is constantlyre-evaluating and adjusting to changesin the chemical industry, workplace,and world. chemicals. He promoted many chemi-cal industries. In 1643 he began themanufacture of iron in Lynn and atBraintree. In 1648 he was granted acommission by the General Court ofMassachusetts to manufacture salt. In1650 he planned a chemical stockcompany, the first in America, for themanufacture of saltpeter, and in thenext year was granted the first monop-oly by Connecticut for the working oflead, copper, tin, antimony, vitriol,alum, etc. In 1662, during a trip toEngland, he read before the RoyalSociety a paper on the manufacture oftar in New England, and in the follow-ing year carried out for the Royal Soci-ety experiments on the brewing of beerfrom maize. He was a famous practi-tioner of medicine and made use ofchemical remedies which he preparedhimself. He was a member of theRoyal Society and a friend and corre-spondent of Robert Boyle, of KenelmDigby, and of George Starkey. In hislarge library there were many booksdevoted to chemistry and medicine,and also a number of alchemical bookswhch had formerly belonged to Dr.John Dee. Many of his books, manu-scripts, and letters are still preserved inthe library of the Massachusetts His-torical Society, Boston, Mass. He diedat Boston, and is buried in the sametomb with his father in the churchyardof King’s Chapel.” ��

The Executive Director/CEOReport• The Executive Director/CEO, alongwith several of her direct reports,updated the Board on the followingitems: the ACS Green ChemistryInstitute® Strategic Plan; the WebPresence Initiative; emerging issuesaffecting the Society; recommenda-tions resulting from the new IRSForm 990 filing requirements; andthe activities of Chemical AbstractsService, the Publications Division,and the Society’s General Counsel.The emerging issues discussion wasparticularly vibrant as the ACSBoard considered many of the keyfactors and trends that affect Societymembership. As a follow-up to thesereports the Board took severalactions. The Board VOTED toamend its Regulations to conformwith the new IRS Form 990 filingrequirements; and on the recommen-dation of the Joint Board-CouncilCommittee on Publications, theBoard VOTED to approve the reap-pointment of several Society journaleditors.

Other Society Issues• The Board received an update on itssubstantial progress toward achiev-ing its 2008 goals, and discussed adraft of proposed 2009 goals. TheBoard concluded its session withintroductions and briefings fromseveral international dignitaries rep-resenting the Royal Society ofChemistry, the German ChemicalSociety, the European Associationfor Chemical and Molecular Sci-ences, the Canadian Chemical Soci-ety, the Mexican Chemical Society,and IUPAC. ��
