Projected Image of the Month “Tubingen” By Jorg Lange
Print of the Month “Stromness Whaling Station, South Georgia”
by Keith Gillard
PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hi everyone, It has been another busy month for the club and various committees with lots of work going into the remainder of this year’s program and planning for next year, as well as the collection of images for the FCC Interclub competition and our own Image of the Year competition. With the final points score competition upon us, competition is heating up, good luck to everyone with the last few images for the point score competition, and the Image of the Year competition. The finishing touches are being put into the end of year presentation evening and dinner, which is shaping up to be a great night for all. The night promises to be a great event for both members and their partners. You won’t want to miss out on this night so don’t forget to get your name down. A big thanks to all the businesses that are supporting the night through sponsorship and the donation of prizes. Please support these businesses where you can. Thanks to everyone who contributed images towards the entry for FCC Interclub competition. The quality of the images was fantastic and I’m sure the club will get some great results. The introduction of a new “Introduction to Image Editing” day focusing on image editing software has proven very popular with lots of members wanting to attend. We look forward to seeing the results from the knowledge gained in the future. Thanks to everyone who has offered help out by providing their time and expertise, our clubs success depends on these members being prepared to share not only their knowledge but also their time. We are looking forward to the presentation by accomplished photographer Sue Robertson on “Creative Photography”. Sue’s signature style is sombre and moody using different techniques to create unusual effects, this will make for an interesting evening.
Cheers, Simon Finch

Our next guest speaker for the night of 4 November 2008 is Sue Robertson. She is speaking on the subject “Creative Photography”. We asked Sue some questions to help members know a little bit more about her before her presentation. Sue is currently a member of the St George Photographic Society. OK Sue – are you a “film” or a “digital” buff? I spent most of my life dabbling with a camera of some sort or another. I finally came into my own with the advent of digital photography. Why did digital photography grab you? Digital photography gave me the freedom to experiment with different techniques and to create unusual effects. It has allowed me to push the boundaries of conventional photography. Have you developed a signature style of photography? Yes - I try to create photographs that are both sombre and moody. I have worked in this direction ever since purchasing my first digital SLR. Where do your main interests lie? My main interest lies in Black and White images which allow me more scope to produce mood and feeling. Your website suggests you have an interest in nature/bush themes? Yes. I spend a lot of time wandering through the bush and parks around southern Sydney trying to capture the essence of the Australian bush. I have compiled a portfolio of poetic images from nature, which, while not necessarily fitting into the rules of photography are nevertheless pieces of art. The images rely on light, form, and colour, and have a soft painterly feel. What recent awards have you won? I recently won the Top Shot Award at the Federation of Camera Clubs National Competition, and also first place in the Photojournalism Category, at the 2008 Sutherland Shire Photographic Society National Competition. I also had three finalist images in the Canon and Digital Photography Magazine Image of the year contest and won two Silver Awards. Don’t miss out on hearing and seeing Sue Robertson’s presentation on November 4. If you want to

A WEEKEND IN CANBERRA
OCTOBER 4TH
– 6TH
2008
Following a week of beautiful warm sunny days leading to our Canberra weekend, Alia’s worst dream of rain, rain and more rain looked like a real possibility. After raining all Friday night we woke up to a grey wet sky that looked like setting the tone for the whole weekend. But while the weekend was not clear of the occasional passing shower, on the most part was fine and we got plenty of photography and socialising in.
Our first official date on the itinerary was the late lunch early buffet dinner at the Capital Country Holiday Village on Saturday afternoon. By 5pm, having been fed, most of us headed off to the Carillion on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to begin our night shoot. It was a pretty casual evening with groups heading off in different directions. Some headed off to the Australian War Memorial that was lit up with photographic images. Others turned their cameras to Anzac Parade and the view to old and new Parliament House and others to any number of different sites around the shores of the lake that were also beautifully lit up. By 9pm, with rain threatening, most of us headed back to the village, gathering in the village’s out-building for drinks and nibbles and a good old chat.
Sunday proved to be a very big day – with lots of activities planned. For some it started before 5:15am with calls to the Balloon Aloft people to see if the hot air balloons would be flying that morning. The day for some did not end till after 11pm. I for one did not make it that late. After a very big week, I was falling asleep at the dinner table and I hit the sack shortly there after. But from all reports the evening in the village’s out-building was just as sociable as the previous night. But more about the events of the day……….
After a late
night, not quite as many made it to the hot air balloon shoot early the next morning as was originally
Page 5
FJKF intended. We met the Balloon Aloft people at the Hyatt at 6am, shortly there after we headed off in convoy to the proposed take off site. The final take off site can vary while on route and Sunday was no exception. After heading off to the other side of the lake and stopping a couple of times to let off test balloons to check wind direction we ended up almost back on the door steps of the Hyatt on the grounds in front of Parliament House. The activities leading to the launch of the balloons proved a worth while and a great reward for the early start. Others chose the slightly later start and went to the wetlands to photograph the wildlife in the early morning light. Disappointingly reports indicated that while the sounds of wildlife were all around, actual sightings were few and far between. But I understand the walk around the wetlands was never the less very enjoyable. At least it was not as cold as when Alia and I were out scouting locations in May. That morning the car was covered in ice and it was very chilly.
By 8 am many of us were either just stirring or heading back the village to enjoy a lovely buffet breakfast before heading off to Floriade. Most of the morning was overcast which proved great for photographing the beautiful fields of tulips and other flowers. Anything from close up to wide angle and for some a study in people who numbered nearly as many as the flowers themselves. Ah…. A little exaggeration there, but it was busy. By afternoon we headed off to the Canberra Deep Space Complex at Tidbinbilla. While the promised tour did not live up to expectations, the drive was very pleasant and it did present an opportunity to photograph some unusual structures. At this point, the lure of the footy Grand Final became too great with some making tracks back to camp to watch the festivities. Back at camp we enjoyed a great BBQ dinner with many partying on till late. Monday morning saw the last of the organised activities. The tour behind the scenes of the National Library’s photographic collection, and how it is stored and cared for, proved to be one of the highlights of the weekend. It was a rare chance to see some socially significant and historic photographs dating back to our early history right through to recent digital images. I believe 56 people joined us for our Canberra weekend, most of who managed to obtain accommodation at the village, with everyone joining in on at least one of our social get togethers during the weekend. From all reports everyone had a great time. While I did assist Alia in the planning for the weekend, it was Alia who really put the weekend together, and it was Alia who lost sleep worrying if it would rain and if it would all work to plan. I think she deserves a huge thank-you for an excellent and well planned weekend. Thank-you Alia. By Jenny Bailey

Congratulations to Margaret Fagg who won Top Folio Print of the Year for “Ribbon Dance”
The competition is a component of APS (Australian Photographic Society http://www.a-p-s.org.au/ ) which is an Australia wide
organisation. The aim of the Society is to promote, improve, share and enjoy photography in Australia offering services specifically
designed to improve photography and photographic skills.
The society organises folios where 5-10 members send images, prints by post, there are
also digital folios. Each member of the folio comments on and scores each of the prints
except their own. The folios go around a number of times per year with a winner for each
round. The winning print from each round of the folio is then sent into a central folio
competition. These are then judged for Top Folio Print.

FJKF !WHO IS INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PHOTOGRAPHIC JUDGE? The FCC Education Sub-Committee have sent out 4 forms for members who might be interested in becoming photographic accredited judges for the FCC. • Identification of Experienced Judges • Application to be placed on the List of FCC Accredited Judges • Guidelines for Persons Applying to be placed on the list of FCC Accredited Judges • FCC Accreditation of Judges Mary Spence has the details and could email you the documents for you to consider if you are interested. Just email Mary and ask for the above documents:- [email protected] Mary has to reply to the FCC by the 15th November 2008. Please note that nomination by a club and submission of an application form does not automatically mean that the applicant will be placed on the FCC
list of accredited judges. All applications will be reviewed against a detailed set of criteria and opinions about the suitability of each applicant will be obtained from at least two experienced FCC judges. If considered necessary, the applicant may be observed and evaluated while judging at a club competition. The FCC have said ,if a club member who is interested in becoming a FCC accredited judge but does not currently have substantial judging experience they should not be nominated at this stage. They will have the opportunity to work towards FCC judging accreditation through the 2009 education programme. The FCC also said, if the clubs can suggest any topics that should be included in the 2009 education programme or make any suggestions about the training of judges, please write to Mary Spence who will pass it on to the
FCC Education Sub-Committee.!

There are many fun external competitions to be entered…… for example my husband (Ian English)
and myself entered the Hunter Valley Gardens Photographic Competition for 2008. We both made it
to the final 10 and I was fortunate enough to be given a “Highly Commended Award”, presented to
me at the Hunter Valley Gardens by Ken Duncan and Andrea Robinson for my entry “Seedburst”.

FJKF MEANDERINGS THROUGH THE VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY AND EAST GIPPSLAND – February 2008
Words and pictures by John and Joan Asplin
Joan wanted to see Victoria’s high country without snow. Now that we are retired, and with a new car to try out, we could go anytime! First stop at the border was Lake Mulwala, a man-made lake. It has an eerie atmosphere due to its drowned forest, still visible after 70 years. It is home to lots of water birds and apparently good fishing.
We drove around the lake through Yarrawonga and then towards Beechworth, staying next to Lake Sambell, enjoying a colourful sunset. Following a few heavy overnight storms, we checked out the Spring Creek Cascades in Beechworth Gorge – well worth it.
Moving on, and continuing to climb, the mountainous scenery became even more beautiful and the historic towns in the area were a photographer’s delight. Had we been there in autumn, as all the post cards depicted, we would have been even more pleased, especially around Bright.
There is breathtaking scenery from atop The Horn on Mt Buffalo. We decided to go there for the sunrise! WHEW! Quite a steep and rugged climb to the 1723m summit, but what a reward! - 360° of mountain tops and mist, shadows and crags, crows, falcons and a short sighted Lyre bird which came
within 2 metres of John as he stood at the lookout! Mt Hotham, even without snow, is spectacular. Falls Creek
showed more of the bushfire destruction of the Alpine forests and we enjoyed a good walk through the gnarled, twisted, burnt out
Page 9
FJKF gums to the preserved “Wallace’s Hut”, built in 1889, and now a National Heritage site.
Bogong Mountain (NB no moths anywhere), and the village of Mt Beauty nestled at its foot, was a great sight from Sullivan’s look out. Mt Hotham, even without snow, is spectacular. Falls Creek showed more of the bushfire destruction of the Alpine forests and we enjoyed a good walk through the gnarled, twisted, burnt out gums to the preserved “Wallace’s Hut”, built in 1889, and now a National Heritage site.
From an 1825m elevation we were downhill from there, almost 300km down the Great Alpine Road to sea level at the Gippsland Lakes. On the way the scenery constantly changes - mountains, valleys, forests - dead and alive, wildflowers, rolling hills, farms and vineyards. We had a good lunch in Omeo at Twinkle’s café. It was then on to Paynesville, a very pretty lakeside village, where we stayed at Captain’s Cove, with more boats in one place than I’ve ever seen before! The dominant water bird is the black swan, hundreds of them. Just out of Bairnsdale, we came across the Silt Jetties, which are deposits of silt from the Mitchell River, as it enters Lake King. These jetties are 8 km long. We drove out to the end through developed land with farms. We also took the car ferry over to Raymond Island and found a colony of photogenic koalas. South was Port Albert, where we spent a very rainy day.
At Lake’s Entrance, along the main street, are some unique and clever carvings, from complete tree stumps, dedicated to WW1 times. Another day we did the long walk out to the actual Lake’s Entrance into the ocean. The swirling currents along the canal and the remaining historical engineering and maritime structures made it a very interesting place.
Page 10
FJKF We next enjoyed a guided tour through the Fairy Cave at Buchan, before continuing to Orbost and Marlo and we found where the Snowy River meets the ocean.
The east coast beaches are beautiful: Cape Conran, Bemm River, and Mallacoota’s Bastion Point to name a few. We returned home via the east coast of NSW, covering 3,002 km in 21 days. Great holiday- we took many photos. Footnote : 6 days later our car was smashed up and it took 95 days to repair. When we finally got it back we just had to try it out again, so in August we took off on a month long trip to Queensland ….. but, that’s another story. _____________________________________________________________________
These stories and photographs are of great interest to all members, so please send me your holiday story, your adventure, short trips or long trips. If you need any help email me at [email protected] or talk to me at Club Meeting nights. Dianne English

MEMBER PROFILE : JENNY BUNN How and why did you start in photography? Joining the Castle Hill Photography Club was my first step in becoming a good photographer, I hope. Before then I just took photos on special occasions every now and then with a Canon Powershot. I was going on an extensive overseas trip and wanted to take good photos. I bought a Canon SLR and then realised I needed support if I was to get the best out of it. I saw an article in the RSL magazine and couldn’t believe my luck.......A DIGITAL CAMERA CLUB AT THE RSL. I immediately joined.
Do you remember your first camera? My first camera was a Box Brownie. My parents developed the photos in the laundry. I was very young and only had limited access. Also film was expensive.
What are your photographic goals ? My photographic goals are to become a good photographer in all settings. I hope to develop a creative bent, something I see in some of our members.
What type of photography do you find the hardest to take? I find it hard taking photos while standing in the shade looking out into sunlight and taking photos from a moving vehicle.
What photos do you like to take the best? I like taking casual portrait shots and find them very rewarding when I see the person and their personality looking back at me. I’m always looking for that photo that’s a bit odd, quirky. Photos with a bit of humour are always good.
Whose photos in the Photography Club do you admire the most? I admire most of the photography I have seen at the club, it is all special. I often wonder how did they do that or what a lucky shot....right place, right time. However, Tony Spence seems to have a creative bent that I hope some day to mimic.
What are your thoughts on today’s Judges? The Judges....They obviously put a lot of time and effort into their judging and of course have a lot more experience than myself. But, I don’t always agree with their decisions or comments as, we all have our preferences.
What advice would you give to a new beginner in photography? This is a hard question. I suppose to take as many photos as they can. Learn what their camera can do. Get good resource material. Join the club and ask club members for advice if they have a problem.
Do you follow any sport or team or have a hobby? I have no choice, my family follows League, so I have learnt a bit along the way and can have a loud opinion on the rules, ref’s decisions and inconsistencies. I play tennis, do Pilates, sew and go to Art classes, which results in me doing a lot of painting. I want my photography and art to merge. I want to take good photos that I can paint in acrylic.
What has been your favourite holiday and travels? I have loved everywhere I have been; each place is special in its own way. If I had to choose I would say Egypt as it was my life’s ambition to go there and Ireland’s a lovely place, great people and party central. America is good too, what can I say; I like them all. Name one thing we don’t know about you? You may not know that I’m a really a hundred year old woman in disguise. Just kidding, just feel like it sometimes. You may not know that I’m a nurse specialising in Cardiology and Medical Research. Do you have any suggestions for the Photography Club? Castle Hill RSL Photography Club appears to be a very well run Club, I have been very impressed. However, sometimes the meetings get a little long and I have to leave early. The competition nights were very long at times but I think you have addressed that. I liked the Trivia Night and found the round tables a more friendly seating arrangement. Any Comments: For myself, as a beginner, I would like to have more workshops on camera settings, how to set your camera in certain situations, how to overcome problems with the settings and how to get different effects with camera settings. Also, accessories for your camera e.g. shade hoods, filter and their uses, how to look after your camera (maintenance). How to take a good photo.... composition, lighting etc. To sum up THE BASICS. But complex to a beginner. I have been to a number of presentations by prestigious photographers and it’s great to see their photos. But I would like to know what they did to get that shot, camera setting, lighting, and can I take a similar shot with my camera? .

NIKON D200 SYSTEM FOR SALE D200 Body
This is a body for those who are serious about their photography. An all metal body ensures great strength and reliability. It was used by many professionals as either their main body or as their backup. It is in perfect condition, only 11,314 exposures. Purchased Mar ‘07 It comes complete with NEW battery and NEW charger, unused strap, manual and both sets of cables. Also included are hard copies of Thom Hogan’s and Ken Rockwell’s D200 guides. Please note that this camera was purchased from a Nikon store in Sydney and is NOT a grey import. This is important when service is required. For a brochure, go to … http://www.nikon.ca/en/pdf/brochures/d200.pdf Including a 4Gb CF memory card…. $1,000 Nikon 18-200/ 3.5-5.6 lens This lens has become the standard “everyday walkabout” lens for Nikon DX cameras. Compact, light AND it has Vibration Reduction! Have a look at Ken Rockwell’s review:-
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm Naturally, the lens is in mint condition and comes with Nikon caps, petal sun shade and soft case. $475 Two 72mm filters, Hoya UV & a Tamron Polariser to suit the lens are also available. $75 for the two
MB-D200 Multi Power Pack and Grip This GENUINE Nikon attachment allows not only two standard Nikon (or 6 AA) batteries to be used instead of just the usual one but it also allows more flexibility when using the camera in portrait mode as the grip has the shutter/on/off button as well as the front and rear control dials. Again, this is in mint condition and has the instruction sheet $ 80
