People will protest, saying that “politics should not be preached from the pulpit,” usually because “there is a separation of church and state.” Most people will be surprised that the teaching of the separation of church and state is not explicitly in the Constitution! It originates from Thomas Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists: “Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between Church and State.” Many people call upon this statement of Thomas Jefferson as the source for this concept of “separation of church and state,” thinking that he and the founding fathers would not permit any religion in government. This is not true. The founding fathers wanted to make it impossible for the new government to decide matters of religious dogma by prohibiting the creation of a state religion. Queen Elizabeth I’s reestablishment of the Anglican Church in 1560 was doing exactly this, that parliament and the Queen were the source of religious dogma. The founding fathers did not want this to continue in the New World. So the state should not interfere with the free exercise of religion. What about morals? Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to George Logan in 1816, saying, “It is strangely absurd to suppose that a million of human beings, collected together, are not under the same moral laws with bind each of them separately.” Therefore, definitely, the state had an obligation to uphold moral laws for our country. All this has been turned upside down today. The founding fathers were concerned with the corrupting influence of the state upon church/religion. Our concern today is the corrupting influence of church/religion upon the state, and so we say that politics should not be preached from the pulpit. But when politics involves morality, we are obliged to preach it from the pulpit. When almost 4000 babies are killed in abortion daily, and we legalize it in an unjust and immoral law, and political figures have the audacity to support it publicly, we are obliged to speak out against this foolishness. And we have the first amendment to back us up. The US Bishops have been doing so heroically. Take note of Cardinal George’s recent comments: Too many Americans have “no recognition of the fact that children continue to be killed [by abortion], and we live therefore, in a country drenched in blood. This can’t be something you start playing off pragmatically against other issues.” Some issues are non-negotiable: abortion, gay marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, euthanasia, physician assisted suicide, etc. So, yes, politics should be preached from the pulpit, especially when our moral compass is pointing in the wrong direction. Yet, we are not preaching politics, we are preaching about the values of the Kingdom of God. Sometimes politics just gets in the way. Make sure you pray before you vote this Tuesday. And pray during the day and afterwards for our new president, whoever he is. He will definitely need our prayers.

Preaching and the Pulpit Father Jay Kythe

Recently I have heard people getting upset about hearing politics preached from the pulpit. People will protest, saying that “politics should not be preached from the pulpit,” usually because “there is a separation of church and state.”

Most people will be surprised that the teaching of the separation of church and state is not explicitly in the Constitution!

Attention Important Notice St. Mary’s Funeral policy is as follows. When there is a funeral at St. Mary’s a lunch is prepared for the family members of the deceased and guests. There are 2 lunch coordinators. The coordinator will contact the family to determine how many guest they are expecting. They will then purchase the main items such as ham, buns and au gratin potatoes. The lunch is then prepared and served by volunteers of the parish. All parishioners are welcome to help out any time. All parish families are asked to donate one of the following to complete the meal: a pan of bars, large hot dish or a large salad for the lunch. Hot dishes can be brought in a crock pot or a casserole dish. These items can be brought in the night before or the morning of the funeral to the church hall. Also please sign sheet to indicate the item brought. If the family/relatives of the deceased would like to bring items for the meal this would be welcome. The policy is being reiterated to all as the last 2 funerals at our church ran very low on food. Your cooperation with this would be greatly appreciated.

Barney & Kay Ostertag wish to thank all of you praying for our grandson, Ben, just 6, who just finished 8 months of intensive chemo. He and Mom were home for only 20 days during that time from the hospital. The brain tumor is gone; however, he needs hearing aids from chemo damage, morphine for painful neuropathy in his legs, and the tumor damaged his optic nerve so he is legally blind. He crawls, but can’t walk at this point. Kay just got back from CA and Ben is such a joy. He is full of love for everyone and God, especially. He is home now and has many appointments for physical therapy. He continues to get his meds and nutrition through his G-tube (stomach tube) although he is eating some food orally now, but not enough to sustain him. His Mom ministers to him with his home meds, anti-seizure, pain, nausea, etc. Please keep Ben and his parents and three brothers in your prayers. At one point, the doctor was perplexed and said he would have to think some about it. Ben told him, “Ask God! Jesus in the one who made me, so he should know how to fix me!” What a guy and what a faith! The nurses called him an old soul in a young body. We thought you would like an update on Ben and hope this isn’t too long. Bless you all for your prayers.

Shepherd’s Center of Cannon Falls Adventures in Learning planners are pleased to announce the next program for Friday, November 7, at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church. Committee members invite you to join them earlier, starting at 9 am to meet, greet and eat before the first speaker, Brenda Voshalike, Cannon Falls Ambulance Director, 9:30 am. The 2nd session of the morning brings an hour of light-hearted and sometimes poignant strolling down memory lane with Heidi Helgren, local Museum Director, and Al Johnson, retired local Attorney. The duo will dialogue regarding people, places and events of past years in Cannon Falls and Goodhue County. Again, the format for the day promises to nurture one’s mind, body and soul! Cost for the day remains $5, which also includes cost of break and lunch. Shepherd’s Center requests attendees pay the five dollar fee regardless of arrival time. Lunch will be served at noon, following the second speaker. To facilitate lunch planning, please register at Shepherd’s Center (263-2136) by Thursday afternoon, November 6.

Election night, at 7:00 pm is the monthly devotion to our Mother of Perpetual Help at St. Mary’s in New Trier. We ask Catholics in our four churches to come to this prayer service on this important night to ask our Blessed Mother and God to intercede for us that we in the United States elect a morally good president who will act according to

the revealed will of God and the foundational principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United Sates of America. We begin with the Rosary and continue with the prayer service and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Please join together in prayer for this critical election result.
