A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORThose who know me know that I’m a huge Disney-file, and I couldn’t be happier to be able

to bring this Disney favorite to life. I saw this animated film in the theater back in 1996 and I am surprised at how much it still resonates today. While the Disney film had a message to tell, this much-darker retelling has many things to say. Peter Parnell explored many themes when writing the book to this show – after all, Victor Hugo was incredibly passionate about political and social issues, so there was a lot to draw from.

While the score and book contain many elements of the Disney film, this new version delves into much darker places and explores themes that children may not understand. Additionally, this retelling brings to light a number of issues facing us today. I urge you to take these messages to heart. After all, Quasimodo isn’t a typical hero. Frollo isn’t just a villain. Esmeralda isn’t a princess. These are ordinary people who are products of both their upbringing and what society has made them. Even the witty Clopin and charming Phoebus have a darker side. These characters are incredibly flawed and make decisions they feel to be right, no matter the cost. Listen to the messages these characters bring you – each character on this stage has a story to tell and something to say. To help bring these stories to life, Parnell uses a story-telling device by way of a show-within-a-show. These 21 balladeers (plus choir) artfully recreate Victor Hugo’s classic while narrating along the way. This concept has always fascinated me and made it much more fun to stage.

A huge shout-out to this 41-member cast who gave so much of their time and energy in creating this show. This music is exceedingly difficult (plus all the Latin!), and each of the Congregants had approximately 144 hours of rehearsal to put this show together. This is a challenging show, and the insanely talented cast has handled it with patience and skill. Faythe Kelly’s Tavern choreography is terrific. Michael Stewart is new to EOT and we are thrilled to have his expertise and skill. Alexis Roberts continues to be my right hand. She keeps this show running smoothly while balancing many tasks. Dalton Hamilton is a genius and we are fortunate to have him back with us. Debbi Lastinger’s costumes are perfect and help to tell the story. Huge kudos to Sean Quinn, Charlie Mezzano (and his masterful visual artistry), Stephanie Fox, this incredible orchestra, the crew and technicians, Betsy Byrd, and Julie Johnston!

As EOT enters its 37th year, I am so fortunate to be a part of such a loving group. From the casts, to the staff; production teams, to technicians; crew to orchestra; each person gives their heart, soul, time, and talent to bring each show to you, and they do so out of love for their craft and families we create within each show. At a time when turmoil, discrimination, and conflict are everywhere, getting to spend my time with these wacky goofballs is balm for the soul.

I hope you enjoy this production and leave the theatre a little more enlightened... and with a little balm of your own. “The world is cruel; the world is ugly; but there are times and there are people when the world is not.”
