The program will run from 10am until 3pm with parents invited to come back at 2:30 for a closing program. We ask that all children bring their

lunches for the day and we will provide drinks and snacks during our time together. We do need the help of those in 6th grade and above to serve as helpers throughout the day. CAN YOU HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?... One of the hardest things that we, as a Church, have to deal with is the way worldly values (and ideas and thinking) are trying to force themselves into the thinking, planning, and celebrations of the Church and its Liturgy. The clearest example is in the celebration of Advent and Christmas. Our Catholic tradition has always seen them as two separate seasons which “flow into and from” each other but are still unique seasons in themselves. Our modern world encourages us to ignore or just “pay lip service to” Advent, start thinking Christmas as early as we can (usually as soon as the Halloween candy is off the shelves – if not earlier) and then, on December 26, start looking ahead to Valentine’s Day, and its hard not to give in. One area where this “attempted intrusion” can cause tension is when it comes to music during Advent and decorating the Church for Christmas. You have heard me say this before, I have heard you say it, some agree and others do not, but I mention this now because this year, the calendar makes it extremely difficult for us, especially in the area of decorating. It is going to be very difficult to get all our faithful decorators to help us this year, because to decorate before Christmas and still recognize the importance of the Advent season means trying to decorate our Church in about 2 hours on Christmas eve (between the end of Sunday’s 11am Mass and the time when people start arriving for the 4pm Family Mass that afternoon). So this year, we are trying to work some of the items we use to decorate for Christmas into our Advent decorations and to use them to highlight the Advent themes of anticipation, waiting and expectation which will allow us to decorate in less than an hour on the 24th. For example, this year, we will wrap the 4 evergreens we set up by the tabernacle in purple and pink ribbons and light one each week in place of the usual 4 candles on our Advent wreath and to set up the crèche/stable during Advent with just hay and the animals to remind is that while “he is near, he is not yet here.” These normally take up a lot of time on decorating day. But to do this, we need to know this week or next that we have about 10-12 people – adults, teens, accompanied children – to make a commitment to help as soon as the 11am Mass ends on the 24th. We also will need our usual decorating help on Saturday morning the 23rd to get everything ready for the 24th (this will be explained as the time gets closer). For now, all we ask is for those willing to give us an hour on the 24th to let us know as soon as you decide (but before Thanksgiving) so we can continue our plans.

THANK YOU
