The pool deck was constructed about twenty years ago of (I believe) CCA pressure-treated SYP. To my knowledge, there has been little, if any, annual or regularly scheduled maintenance or preservative treatments to the wood substrate. All of the wood is severely weathered, and some planking had deteriorated to the point of requiring replacement. The contractor recommended procuring 150 gallons of TegaSeal, and I reduced this to 120 gallons giving him instructions that, if we required more, it would be ordered, but to err on the side of heavy coverage and “soaking / penetration.” The entire pool project consumed only about 60 gallons of TegaSeal, so the contractor has been instructed to proceed with treatment of the soundside pier, another twenty-year-old structure exposed to the harsh Outer Banks environment. The pier should consume most or all of the balance of the TegaSeal product. I hope the addended pictures and commentary convey that the results of the TegaSeal application look very promising. I am not expecting any miracles due to the extremely weathered and deteriorated condition of the substrate but am hopeful the TegaSeal substantially extends the life of the pool deck … RGW * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This is a picture of the TegaSealed Ships Watch Pool taken about 10:00am on 11-November-2005. The sun is at my back. This decking is about twenty years old and much of it was in rather bad condition. The deck was power-washed and bleached prior to TegaSealing. A few planks (dark areas) were replaced by the contractor prior to TegaSealing. Unfortunately, the contractor did not comply with instructions to take “before, during and after” pictures.

This picture is looking towards the sun and clearly reveals the “shiny” TegaSeal cured-polymer coating reflectivity. Again, compare to the prior picture. One of the features of TegaSeal is that it does not mask or overly impact the natural wood appearance unless you are positioned at a fairly obtuse angle to the light source. The pool was closed “early” to permit completion of the TegaSeal project. Both the circular hot tub and pool are also scheduled for additional maintenance. The elevated second-level decking was also TegaSealed.

This is another “into the sun” view of the pool complex.

This is an “into the sun” semi-close-up of the TegaSealed decking adjacent to the hot tub. Note the new planking at the very top and two adjacent new planks about a quarter of the way down.

Another “into the sun” close up picture. You can see the wood is severely checked, cracked and deteriorated from age and weathering. This will be a challenging test to see whether TegaSeal can protect and prolong the life of wood in such condition. With some sections of new planking, we will also be able to observe and compare TegaSeal treatment efficacy between new and old pressure-preservative-treated wood.

Another “into the sun” perspective. Sections of the “new planking” repairs are visible.

A close up of the top-border section of planters that are part of the separation between the upper and lower deck levels. Note how severely the wood had aged and weathered. The heads of a few of the finishing nails are visible. I don’t think the nails were “popped” but more the case of “revealed” due to the wood-weathering substrate loss. Nevertheless, the TegaSeal gives the promise (and appearance) for service life extension.
