Book description:
Tragic, comic, and utterly honest. A Tale of Love and Darkness is at once a family saga and a magical self-portrait of a writ-er who witnessed the birth of a nation and lived through its turbulent history.
It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the forties and fifties, in a small apartment crowded with books in twelve languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. The story of an adolescent whose life whose life has been changed forever by his mother’s suicide when he was twelve years old. The story of a man who leaves the con-straints of his family and its community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen to join a kibbutz, change his name, marry, have children. The story of a writer who becomes an active participant in the political life of his nation.

The Bedside Torah: Wisdom, Visions, and Dream Rabbi Bradely Shavit Artson
Despite the name of this parashah, it opens with the death of Sarah in Hebron, and Abraham’s need to acquire a burial site for her remains. He purchases the Cave of Machpelah, marking the first time a Hebrew owns land in Eretz Yisrael. Recognizing the need to assure the transmission of the covenant, he then arranges for her servant to return to his home-land and find a wife for his son Isaac from among his extended family. The servant discovers Rebekah, of Abraham’s family line, at the well in the oasis, fulfilling exactly the signs for which the servant had prayed. Returning to her home with her, he meets the rest of the family; both her brother, Laban, and her father, Bethuel, recognize the handiwork of God in this fortuitous connection, and ask Rebekah if she wants to return with the servant and marry Isaac. She does.
As the caravan of Rebekah approaches, Isaac is out walking—or meditating—in the fields. They see one another, and, in a powerfully moving moment, the Torah tells us that as she alights, Isaac brings her into the tent that had been his mother’s, loves her, and is comforted for his mother’s death.
Abraham marries again, this time to Keturah, and though he provides for all his progeny, only his son Isaac inherits his blessing, remaining wealth, and his land. By now 125 years old, Abraham dies, and, like Sarah, is buried in the Cave of Machpelah.

Condolences
It is with deep regret we inform you of these recent passings:
Lawrence Ernst, age 74, on November 4th. He is survived by his wife Gail, his daughter Erica (Benjamin) Fleischer, grand-daughters Nava and Rina Fleischer, and son Jason Ernst.
Marilyn Cohen on October 29th after a long illness. She is survived by Ronald, her beloved husband of 63 years; loving mother of Tammy (Harry) Wise, Robbin (Harold) Gross and Heidi (Richard) Solomon and devoted grand-mother of Hannah (Ben Ganon) Wise, Ethan and Louiza Wise, Rachel, Michael and Johnny Gross, Daniel and AJ Solomon. Marilyn was also the dear sister of the late Richard Goodman.
The Anshe Emet community extends its deepest condolences to these families during this difficult time. May they be comforted among the mourners in Zion and Jerusalem. Amen.

The bulk of the work that ICRF supports is in basic research; that is, research to uncover the molecular biological events that lead to cancer in order to prevent or reverse the process.
