LIFE TOGETHER

Go to www.stewardshiptoday.org to get your online copy of Stewardship Today, a monthly publication for parishioners to embrace the importance of stewardship in daily living.

Dear Friends, A parish’s Mission week is one of the most important ones of the year. This year we welcome Fr. Phillip Chircop, SJ, who will lead us in “Praying For Our Lives” with preaching this weekend and the Mission nights, Monday - Wednesday, 7:00pm in Church. Every week usually has its own busy-ness. I want to encourage you to “make the Mission”, give yourself a chance to hear some new preaching, reflect a bit on where you are with the Lord, and join the parish in keeping this Mission week. The graces of the Mission time will unfold for you all through the coming year. I hope you will also take part in “Pancakes For Claire” which begins after 7:30am Mass until 11:30am in Fr. Engels Hall. The event raises funds for the School Library and the Religious Education materials Library. You’ll have a nice breakfast and support two good causes all at the same time. Our parish is approaching the first leg of the Stew-ardship effort, Prayer Stewardship over the next two weeks. Prayer is our first response to the invitation by God to participate in His life. You will be given the opportunity to designate your way of praying for the year. Remember to please pray for the parish too in your plans. Thanksgiving is coming soon and we annually have morning mass at 8:30am with a blessing of bread and wine for your tables that day. What a good way to begin this special day of giving thanks. The Diocese began the 50th Anniversary Jubilee last Sunday at the Cathedral. Born in the Spirit of Faith is the Jubilee theme and one which highlights the work of God in the midst of human success and failures in creating the diocesan life called Baton Rouge. So much good has happened through the Church in the Baton Rouge Diocese over 50 years. You have stories. Sometime this year I want to have a story-telling event which will allow those of you who want to come and tell your story about the Diocese. Have a good week. Love,

SCHOOL NEWS

It was an active first quarter for the students, faculty, and staff of St. Jean Vianney School. We kicked off the 25th Anniversary of St. Jean Vianney School by gathering in the courtyard on the 25th day of school to bury a time capsule containing objects presented by each class. The plan is to dig up the capsule in ten years when the school celebrates its 35th anniversary. God answered our prayers and gave us perfect weather for the students’ Fall Festival. The success of this afternoon was largely due to the organizing and planning of Cecile Martin, Melissa Foshee, and their team of room moms. Thanks to them and the legion of moms and dads who worked this event, the children made some happy memories. Check out pictures of the day on the school’s website. The fun continued that night at The Gator Swamp Fest, the annual fund raiser for SJV Athletics. This year was the most successful year on record, with over $14,000 being raised. It helps make up for last year’s Swamp Fest, which saw torrential rain fall just before opening. Much thanks to those who made this night possible, but especially Shane and Sarah Morrison, Santa Fe Cattle Company, Megan Klock, Lori Huffine, Denise and Lowell Hebert, Cheri Mock, the Dykes Family, Raising Canes, and Baton Rouge Coca Cola. October ended with the annual “Changing of the Street Sign.” This year, first grader Henlee Hoffer won the honors and has dubbed the street “Henlee’s Gator Highway.” (Parents please note, the speed limit on Henlee’s Gator Highway is still 10 mph.) We move into the second quarter of this school year with much anticipation as we all look forward to November, December, and the holidays that these months bring. Keep up with St. Jean Vianney School news and activi-ties… subscribe to the weekly electronic newsletter, SJV Connections, by going to www.stjeanvianneyschool.org and clicking on the "newsletter" tab.

VOCATIONS

By patient endurance you will win your life. Be patient with yourself and with God as you await the sign of your call. If God is calling you, call or email Fr. Matt Lorrain at 225.336.8778, [email protected], or visit, www.diobr.org/vocations.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NEWS THE GIVING TREE Our Advent Giving Tree will be located in church near the Sacristy. Each family wanting to participate in this outreach ministry is asked to take an ornament from the Giving Tree and prepare their gift for the person described. It is important that the gifts be returned under the tree by December 5th. The ornaments will provide an opportunity for us to reach out to those persons facing the holidays with inadequate funds, those who are ill or homebound, and those preparing to receive the sacraments. Please offer your prayers for these individuals during this holiday season.

A CALL TO THE SERVANTS OF GOD : Born in the Spirit of Faith

Our Father Offers Us Forgiveness As we worship and serve together, we enter this season of reflective prayer together. In the Our Father, Jesus encouraged his followers to protect healthy relationships

through the practice of forgiveness. A daily prayer “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” is a regular commitment to ‘clean the slate.’ Even as the Lord cleanses us of sin and forgives us, we are encouraged to forgive others. Please consider your personal commitment and the many ways you might pray, serving your parish as you honor God through prayer. Beseech God for his forgiveness, and seek reconciliation with others. Please pray. Immediately after he encouraged his disciples to pray for daily provision “our daily bread,” Jesus invited them to pursue forgiveness, with their Heavenly Father and with others they encountered. We serve God as part of a great Church whose history stretches far beyond those with whom we share immediate family ties. Our Church family extends across geography and time. The willingness to forge restored relationships through forgiveness continues to serve each parish family well. At this special time, as you pray for yourself and your family, remember to pray for others too.

Thank you to everyone who has made or will be making a commitment of financial and prayerful support to this years Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Please remember, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal provides us with the evidence of the power of our shared faith through our collective giving. And this appeal has been instrumental in the unprecedented growth of good works that have taken place in our diocese over the last twenty-five years. Your support this year is and will be greatly appreciated.

PARISH MISSION November 15th –17th

By Rev. Philip Chiroep, S. J.

PRAY ALWAYS ALL WAYS Come and experience how prayer is larger

than words and more than something we do. Prayer is something we become. It is a habit of the

heart and a posture of the soul. The scriptural challenge to pray always and without ceasing is an invitation to practice

presence, a new way of seeing, a creative way of living.

LECTOR MINISTER TRAINING There will be a Lector Minister Training on Saturday, November 20th at 10:00am in the Church. This is for new ministers and anyone who would like to be retrained.
