BY THE WAY ...

• Once again our Parish Social Service Ministry is gearing up for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Every year this is a very successful tangible demonstration of our concern for the poor and hungry around us. Elsewhere in this bulletin, there is a flier which details ways for each of us to participate in this effort, and dates and places to drop off donations of food. I encourage all of you to join me in supporting this annual outreach.

• Holydays of Obligation - Perhaps it is better to refer to these as "holydays of opportunity," rather than obligation. These are days which celebrate important mysteries of our faith, and when we are asked to attend Holy Mass as if it were a Sunday. This is often inconvenient and requires a certain amount of planning and prioritizing, but the sacrifice we may make in order to "make the effort" is worth it because it allows us to give praise and honor to Almighty God; because it broadens our understanding of our faith; because it allows us to make to our family and the wider world an often-times counter-cultural statement about the importance of our faith in our daily lives.

In medieval times, when holydays were also holidays (the latter word is derived from the former) and opportunities to leave work behind for a day and celebrate, there were originally 36 holydays of obligation. Over the course of the centuries, as living and working conditions have changed, this gradually shrunk to 10. In the United States, since colonial times, we have observed six holydays.

The next holyday is the Immaculate Conception on Saturday, December 8. At the Third Provincial Council of Baltimore in 1836, the Bishops of the United States declared the Virgin Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception to be the patroness of our country, and thus we observe the feast each year as a holyday. The Masses for the holyday at Saint Anthony's will be at 7:30 P.M. on Friday night, December 7, and at 7:30 A.M. and 12:05 P.M. on Saturday, December 8. Plan ahead now to come that day to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, and to pray for our country on our national feast.

In the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun, the main character is at first befuddled, then amused, and ultimately edified by an elderly Italian man who walks under her window each morning on his way to place a fresh bouquet of flowers at a wayside shrine to the Virgin Mary. By the end of the movie, she comes to see the gesture as a simple act of faith and appreciates it for what it is. This coming December 8, be that person yourself, and place a bouquet of your prayers before the image of Mary, who in her faithfulness and openness to God's will is the image of the Church.

• With the help of funding from the Bishop's Annual Appeal, Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests' retirement residence has been a home over the years for a number of our priests. These priests reside there while also serving parishes by celebrating Mass. The Appeal also helps by providing financial support for the extraordinary healthcare needs of our priests. Your gift to the Bishop's Annual Appeal is a concrete way to acknowledge our priests' decades of faithful service to our Church. Please make a gift to the Annual Appeal today as a way of showing thanks. For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2018appeal.org.

• Today in the United States is observed as Veterans Day. We offer the following prayer as a way of remembering all those who have served our country.

God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and who laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom.

We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are harassed by memories too painful for the light of day. '

We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home.

Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and the harvest of peace.

Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor!

Let the peace you left us, the peace you give us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us.

Christ Jesus hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer!

God bless you all,

Father Ray

Protecting Gods CHILDREN

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16 Elijah asked a widow for a cup of water and a piece of bread. She told him she was almost out of flour, and that she and her son would soon starve. Elijah told her not to be afraid, as God had told him the jar of flour would not go empty. So she did as he had asked and prepared bread from the last of her flour. As God had said, her jar did not go empty, and she and her son had plenty to eat. Second Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28 The high priests entered the sanctuary each year and offered a sacrifice, but not a sacrifice of their own blood. Just as people die once and are judged, Christ was offered up once for the sins of many. Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 Jesus expressed disgust over the hypocrisy of some of the scribes for wanting special treatment from the people. He watched the wealthy put large contributions into the collection box, but explained that what they gave was surplus wealth, and not a real sacrifice. He told them the biggest donation was a small amount from a widow, because she had given up the only money that she had to live on.

Albert La Barre Memorial 500 Club” In 2004 the late Al La Barre created the “500 Club” to help pay unexpected maintenance expenses of the parish. All of us who own homes know the feeling of facing a major unforeseen repair. Unfortunately, our annual income does not always allow the luxury of budgeting for unexpected repairs and therefore, the “500 Club” has assisted in the payment of untimely maintenance. To pay tribute to our former Church Trustee we have renamed this worthwhile club the “Albert La Barre Memorial 500 Club” and would be honored if you would think about making a 2018 annual donation of $500. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this “stewardship of treasure” opportunity. Please call the rectory with any questions or concerns you may have regarding this program. A few projects completed last fiscal year with 500 Club donations:

Upgrade of the church sound system Partial funding of new lift in Parish Center/School

Wish List for this fiscal year:

Replace church lighting with energy-efficient bulbs Replace aging rectory appliances Renovate leaky rectory bathrooms

Amazing Things are Happening at St. Anthony School!

Halloween at St. Anthony School was spooky good fun. The students treated parents and friends to a parade around the school and then headed into the gym where each class took the stage to show off their costumes. Sr. Colleen even joined in on the festivities!

We have some amazing student-leaders at SAS. Check out 8th grader, Ryan, teaching the younger students about the mechanics of 3D printers in the SAS 3D Printing club. Our after-school clubs provide our older students with another opportunity to mentor and teach our younger students.
