Letter from the President

Dear SUO Members and Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I invite our membership and guests to the 2017 SUO/AADO/OPDO meeting. Each year our organization grows as we reach out to one another for advice on managing the challenges of academic otolaryngology and residency training. The theme of this meeting is The Application of Innovation and Technology in Clinical Practice and Resident Education. Our keynote speaker, Paul Grundy from IBM, will be discussing “Watson,” the computer with artificial intelligence and how this type of technology will fundamentally change our delivery of health care and also change the way we educate the next generation of physicians. Continuing with the theme of technology, Glenn Green will lead a panel on the uses of 3D printing, both in clinical practice as well as in surgical training, and Christine Gourin will moderate a panel on the advancement of surgical robots.
A newly formed committee of SUO, led by Mark Wax, has been charged with enhancing the sharing of information from our meetings and within our society. One of their initiatives involves web-based curriculum which will be discussed in one of the panels.
Another active SUO committee is the Diversity Committee, chaired by Carrie Francis. They have been highly productive this year, reaching out to URM students and providing exposure to otolaryngology, advice, and mentoring to prepare the students to apply to otolaryngology residencies. One particularly successful event occurred at the AAO meeting in Chicago this year. The Diversity Committee, in conjunction with the Harry Barnes Society, sponsored a luncheon bringing together dozens of students, residents, and attendings to share experiences. The Diversity Committee will present a panel on faculty recruitment and retention.
Our Education Committee will be presenting two panels, moderated by Travis Tollefson and Maya Sardesai, on simulations focusing on communication and feedback.
Another highlight of the meeting will be a lecture and mini workshop presented by Laura Crawshaw, founder of The Boss Whispering Institute and author of “Taming the Abrasive Manager.” We will hopefully come away with better skills to deal with individuals manifesting “Civility Deficiency Disorder.”
Mona Abaza, Chair of OPDO has put together an excellent program for OPDO. One of the panels will address the recent downturn in the number of resident applicants in otolaryngology and what might be contributing factors. More importantly, can we reverse this trend?
I find that the annual SUO/AADO/OPDO meeting is the most valuable meeting of the year for academic otolaryngology. Each year I leave our meeting invigorated and with a list of projects to implement at home. I hope this year’s meeting provides all of you ample ideas to incorporate into your departments and with the excitement and optimism that I feel at the conclusion of these outstanding meetings. We look forward to seeing all of you in Chicago!
