Standalone vs. Enterprise DeploymentNovell ZENworks Asset Management comes in two deployments: standalone and enterprise. The standalone deployment, described in this guide, is designed for small, centralized organizations (1,000 or fewerPCs) and quick. Under the standalonedeployment, all components of ZENworksAsset Management software are installed on a single machine. The installation alsoincludes related software, including Microsoft*SQL Server 2005 Express, Microsoft’s freeSQL Server edition, Tomcat and the Java*runtime environment.

Note: The standalone deployment evaluationshould not be installed on a PC or server thatalready has Microsoft SQL Server installed.

Unlike the standalone version, the enterprisedeployment allows large, highly dispersedorganizations to distribute the architectureand establish local collection points toincrease flexibility and scalability.

For more information about differencesinherent in the two deployments of ZENworks Asset Management, or to evaluate the enterprise deployment, please refer to the Installation Guide(asset_management_installation_guide.pdf),available from the installation wizard or from the CD image.

Exploring Novell ZENworksAsset Management Software ManagementNovell ZENworks Asset ManagementSoftware Management allows you to tracklicense purchases and reconcile them todiscovered products. It also allows you to do the following:

Analyze application usage in conjunctionwith licenses and installationsAllocate purchased licenses to departments, cost centers, sites and individual PCs or serversEstablish and enforce organization-widesoftware standards

Software Compliance Overview

The following section takes you on a quicktour of the capabilities of ZENworks AssetManagement Software Management, guidingyou through a sequence that demonstratesits power.

Viewing Your Discovered Products List

The ZENworks Asset Management Knowledge-base is designed not only to provide accuratesoftware inventory data, but also to present alicense view of this information in ZENworksAsset Management Software Management. To present the license view, we start withsoftware products in the ZENworks AssetManagement inventory and then filter themthrough the license portion of our Knowledge-base. This process accomplishes three things:

Consolidation of related versions, servicereleases and language versions to theminor release level (example: 3.1) into a single product.Exclusion of products, such as browsersand viewers, which do not have licensecompliance implications.Distinction between software suites andrelated components so they are countedproperly for license compliance purposes. For example, if a PC has Microsoft OfficeXP Professional installed, the underlying

components are ignored for reportingpurposes. Conversely, if one or more of the components is discovered on a PC and the related suite is not, the compo-nents are reported.

To see the license view of the software inven-tory collected as part of your evaluation:

1. Launch the Web Console as described onpage 7.

2. View the Asset Management > SoftwareManagement page.

3. From the Discovered Products menu, choose Reconcile to License Record. This is your software inventory—a list of allproducts discovered on the workstationsyou’ve set up to scan. This list is filteredthrough the License Knowledgebase, so that only the products recognized as requiring license tracking are shown.

4. In the Installed Quantity column, drill downto see a list of workstations that have aparticular product installed.

5. Drill down on the machine name to see the distinction between the full softwareinventory and the license view.

Importing and Entering Purchase Records

Novell ZENworks Asset Management SoftwareManagement allows you to record softwarepurchases and reconcile this information todiscovered products. The basis for establish-ing license proof of ownership is the transac-tion itself, whereby key information such asdate, reseller, purchase order and invoice istied directly to compliance status reports.

There are two ways to get purchasing datainto Software Compliance:

Import—you can use a tab-delimited textfile as a source to import purchase data. You can also use preconfigured resellerconnectors to import purchase recordsavailable from select resellers. See WebConsole help for details on reseller connec-tors and import file formats.

Page 14: Novell ZENworks 7.5 Asset Management Evaluation Guide

p. 12

Input—purchase transactions can also beentered through the user interface.

1. From the Purchase Records menu, choose Add Purchase.

2. Complete the purchase record’s headerinformation.

3. At the lower left of the right frame, clickChoose Product.

4. At the lower left of the right frame, clickAdd New Product. (Purchased productsare stored as unique Catalog Products.)

5. Enter information about the product andclick Next.

6. Enter purchase information for the productand click Done.

You have just created a Purchase Recordentry and a Catalog Product entry. You can now tie a Discovered Product to thisPurchased Product (i.e., Product Catalog) by creating a License Record and reconcil-ing it to both the Discovered Product and the Purchased Product.

Reconciling Products

The best way to reconcile DiscoveredProducts with Catalog Products is to use the Auto-reconcile feature.

1. From the License Records menu, chooseAuto-reconcile.

2. Click Start Auto-reconcile at the bottomof the page. A list of proposed LicenseRecords is generated based directly onDiscovered Products; matching CatalogProducts are suggested based on textmatching. If no Catalog Products are listedwith the License Records, no matcheswere found.

3. To create one or more License Recordsand reconcile them to Discovered Productsin one step, select the check box to theleft of a product (or click Select All), and then click Create Licenses.

You can also create License Recordsmanually and then reconcile them toDiscovered Products.

1. From the License Records menu, chooseAdd License Record.

2. Enter information about the License.3. Click Reconcile to Catalog Product.4. Select the appropriate product from the

catalog and click Done.5. Click Reconcile to Discovered Product.6. Select the appropriate product from the

Discovered Products list and click Done.

The License Record is now complete. It hasboth a Catalog Product and a DiscoveredProduct tied to it, and it is the vehicle fortracking compliance for this license.

Viewing Your Compliance Status

Now that you have scanned at least one PC, entered a purchase record, added alicense record and reconciled the PurchasedProduct to a Discovered Product, you canview the compliance status results:

From the Software Management page’s Reports menu, choose SoftwareCompliance > Compliance Report. This report will display the license youcreated along with the License Quantityand the Installed Quantity (both of whichare drill-down values that allow you toaccess supporting license transactionsand related PC information).

Tip: Since the ZENworks Asset ManagementUsage Monitor is enabled as part of yourevaluation software, you may notice that theCompliance Report includes an “Active UsageQuantity” column, showing software usageinformation. In order to collect accurate appli-cation usage information, you must re-scanthe evaluation machine and other PCs andservers that you have previously scanned.

Allocating Licenses

Purchasing and installing software is not theend of the license-tracking story. You mayneed to move licenses between machines, departments or sites. ZENworks Asset Man-agement allows you to allocate licenses todepartments, cost centers, sites or individualPCs. Allocations are designed to allow you toask yourself, “Who should have the softwareinstalled?” and “Why am I allocating a licenseif it’s not used or installed?”

To use ZENworks Asset Management tomanage License Allocations:

1. Under the License Records menu item, click License Allocation > View/EditAllocations.

2. Choose a License Record by clicking thename of the License.

3. Click Allocation Worksheet. A messageappears, “No demographic allocations havebeen selected. To choose a demographic, click Options.” Click OK.

4. To allocate the license from this LicenseRecord to one or more individual scannedPCs or servers, click Add Workstationsat the bottom of the License AllocationWorksheet.

5. Enter criteria in the Find Workstations toAllocate Licenses page and click Search.

6. Choose one or more PCs or servers andclick Done. Licenses have now beenallocated to the selected PCs or servers.

7. To view one of the License Allocationreports, under the Reports menu item, click License Allocation > CurrentAllocations.

Managing Software Standards

To use ZENworks Asset Management tomanage software standards:

1. Under the Discovered Products menuitem, click Manage Software Standards.

2. A list of all Discovered Products is present-ed. Unlike in the License View, all products

are listed here, even those with no licenseimplications, so you may want to catego-rize these also.
