Introduction

This document reflects the necessary guidelines for configuring your network to run the Pathways family of software products using the following supported operating systems:

Server • Novell NetWare 4.x / 5.x / 6.x

Workstations • Windows XP Professional • Windows 2000 Professional • Windows 98/ME • Windows NT Workstation 4.0

This guide assumes that you are installing Pathways for the first time. And while CCC is aware that there are many possible client/server combinations available when setting up a network, this document will cover only some of the most common ones. For further information, please enlist the services of a qualified consultant or network engineer.

The Pathways family of products supported in a network environment include:

• CCC Pathways Appraisal Solution • CCC Pathways Estimating Solution • CCC Pathways Independent Appraiser Solution Warning! Setting up a network requires a complete understanding of networking theory, as well as a thorough knowledge of all supported operating systems. We strongly urge you to enlist the services of a qualified vendor or consultant to install and set up your network. CCC will answer general questions about running Pathways on a network. If you require extensive consultation on your network configuration or the various supported operating systems, you will need to enlist the services of a qualified network technician. CCC is not responsible for the setup or configuration of your internal network systems.

Please refer to the appropriate chapter in this Guide to setup and configure your server and workstations. This must be completed before installing Pathways.

Chapter 1 – Novell NetWare Server Configuration

Overview Pathways is a client/server-based application in which network clients access a single copy installed to the network server. Once installed, the server acts as a central repository for all program and data files, as well as an internal set of file location pointers. Since these pointers reside on the server, they are the same for every workstation accessing Pathways on the network. Consequently, the installation of Pathways must be done from one of the workstations to a commonly mapped network drive on the server.

Important! All subsequent Pathways Program and Data updates must be performed at the same system from which the original installation was run. The Novell NetWare 4.x / 5.x / 6.x server operating systems are very robust and dependable, and make an excellent choice as a server platform from which to run Pathways. The only drawback is that the average end user may find it somewhat difficult to manage and configure. Because of this, CCC strongly recommends enlisting the services of a qualified consultant or network engineer. With this in mind, the NetWare server portion of this document will only address the administrative portion of network configuration i.e., creating groups and users, access rights, etc… The client sections however, will include basic connectivity instructions.

The setup procedures outlined in this guide are provided as an example, and are not meant to be the only possible method for configuring your network. However, we strongly suggest that your network configuration conforms to these guidelines in order to ensure the success of your installation. These instructions assume that your network hardware and software have been properly set up and are functioning normally.

Configuring the Server Verify that the server and workstations meet all minimum hardware and software requirements as published quarterly in the CCC Technical Requirements document. You can find this document located on the CCC website: http://www.cccis.com/. CCC strongly urges that the server and workstations meet or exceed our recommended hardware specifications to ensure the best performance.

Please verify that you have enough disk space prior to beginning your installation of Pathways. You should have at least 4GB of free disk space on your target drive prior to beginning the installation.

Note Although 4GB is sufficient for the installation and operation of Pathways, CCC recommends that the target drive be as large as is practical in order to allow plenty of room for growth.

Novell NetWare servers communicate with their clients basically via two protocols: Internetwork Packet Exchange/ Sequenced Packed Exchange (IPX/SPX) and/or Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Of those two protocols, by far the most common choice used in a NetWare environment is the IPX/SPX option. With this in mind, this guide is going to assume that IPX/SPX is the protocol implemented and is configured with the default Frame Type of 802.2. For further assistance with configuring protocols or any other issues with your NetWare server, please enlist the services of a qualified consultant or network engineer.

Create Pathways Groups and Users With each version of Novell NetWare, various administrative utilities have been developed for the management of users, groups and resources. From old DOS based utilities to the more modern Java based applications that can even be accessed via the Web. Of these different utilities, one of the most commonly used for administrative purposes is the NetWare Administrator. This administrative utility runs from any supported Windows client and can perform all of the tasks needed to successfully configure your Pathways users and groups, as well as many other needed tasks. These capabilities as well as compatibility across all supported versions of NetWare make this utility an ideal option for administration and therefore will be the only option discussed in this document.

The following instructions are not intended to be the only way possible to configure your server, but are meant mainly to be a general guide on how Pathways users and groups should be configured. Furthermore, due to the wide variety of possible configurations in the field, these instructions are written from the perspective of new server configuration rather than modifying an existing server setup. For further help in administrating your network, please enlist the services of a qualified consultant or network engineer.

Note The CCC approved client software for NetWare must be installed on the workstation and connectivity established to the server, in order to have the ability to use the Netware Administrator utility. To create Pathways Users and Groups, follow these simple steps:

1 Make certain that you are logged into the server as “admin”.

2 Using a method of your choice, browse to the following path: (Your NetWare server) > SYS > Public > Win32.

3 Next, double-click on the Nwadmin32.exe file. This will bring up the NetWare Administrator utility.

4 In NetWare Administrator, right-click on the root Organization object at the top of the window and select Create…

5 Select the Organizational Unit object, and then click OK.

6 Enter “Pathways Users OU” in the Organizational Unit Name field, and then click Create.

7 Next, in NetWare Administrator, right-click the Pathways Users OU object that you just created and then select Create…

8 This time, select Group in the New Object window, and then click OK.

9 Enter “Pathways Security Group” in the group name field, and then click Create.

10 Now, again right-click the Pathways Users OU object and select Create…

11 This time select User in the New Object window, and then click OK.

12 Enter “installer” in both the Login Name and Last Name fields, populate the Create

Another User check box, and then click Create. (This account will be used for Pathways installation, Client Setup and program update purposes.)

13 Next, enter both the Login Name and Last Name for one of the users that will be running Pathways on the network, and then click Create.

14 Repeat step 13 until all Pathways users on the network have been created, and then click Cancel.

Add Pathways Users to the Pathways Security Group To add users to the Pathways security group, follow these simple steps:

1 In NetWare Administrator, right-click on the Pathways Security Group and select Details…

2 Click the Members button, and then click the Add button. This will bring up the Select

Object window displayed on the next page.

3 Select all of the users that will be running Pathways on the network, and then click OK.

Note Make certain the user “installer” is added to the Pathways Security Group. 4 Click OK to close the Pathways Security Group window.

Configure users to require a password. To setup user passwords, as well as any other user properties that you would like to configure, please follow these simple steps:

Note We recommend having the same login name and password on both the server and workstation for each user. This will eliminate users from having to log in separately to both the server and their own workstation. 1 In NetWare Administrator, right-click on one of the users that will be running Pathways on

the network, and select Details…

2 On the right side of the window, select Password Restrictions.

3 Populate the Require a Password check box (and any other selections you want to

make), and then click the Change Password button.

4 When finished entering your password information, click OK.

5 Repeats steps 1-4 above for each user that will be running Pathways on the network (including the “installer” account).

Create a share point on the server and grant proper access We suggest you create a directory named “CCCAPPS”. If your server has a separate volume for applications (e.g., APPS), we suggest you create the directory in that volume. If you only have one volume, then create the CCCAPPS directory in the SYS: volume. The Pathways installation program will create a Pathways directory within the CCCAPPS directory. This is the directory into which Pathways will be installed. To create the CCCAPPS directory and then grant proper access, follow these simple steps:

1 Using a method of your choice, browse to the volume that Pathways will be installed to.

2 Create a directory called “CCCAPPS” on the root of the target volume.

3 Next, in NetWare Administrator, double-click on the target volume in order to expand it.

4 Now, right-click on the CCCAPPS folder, and select Details…

5 On the right side of the window, click the Trustees of this Directory button.

6 Click the Add Trustee button.

7 On the right, in the Browse Context side of the window, double-click on the Pathways

Users OU object in order to display its contents in the Available Objects window on the left.

8 Now, in the Available objects window, select the Pathways Security Group, and then click OK.

9 Finally, in the Access Rights section, populate all of the check boxes, and then click OK. This will establish CCCAPPS as the shared network directory and grant the Pathways Security Group the proper access.

Create a login script for the Pathways Users OU As stated at the beginning of this chapter, Pathways requires a common mapped drive from all workstations to the share point on the server. The best way to achieve this is to have your users run a script at login that automatically maps the drive needed for Pathways.

To create a login script for your Pathways users, please follow these next simple steps:

Note If you already have your users running a login script, just adapt the below instructions to your existing script. 1 In NetWare Administrator, right-click on the Pathways Users OU, and select Details…

2 On the right side of the window, click the Login Script button.

3 In the Login Script window, enter the map command as stated above. (Replacing “sys”

with whatever volume Pathways will be installed to, and “P:” with whatever drive letter you choose for Pathways.)

4 Click OK to close the Pathways Users OU Details window.

Backup options A backup system (such as a removable drive, CD-RW, or a tape drive) is necessary to protect you from unexpected disasters that lead to loss of data. CCC strongly recommends that you purchase a large-capacity backup system and implement a consistent backup routine that is strictly adhered to. Backups should be done as often as is practical. Depending on the need, it is best to back up the system on a daily or weekly basis. For help with implementing a backup system, please enlist the services of a qualified consultant or network engineer.

Note The Backup and Restore utility that is installed along with Pathways, was primarily designed to ease the move of Pathways from one computer to another in the event of computer upgrade or replacement. However, this utility can be used as a limited backup system due to its ability to auto run through Windows Task Scheduler. Important! Pathways Backup and Restore will only backup the Pathways work files and configuration files. No program or database files are backed up at all. In the event of a system failure, Pathways would have to be reinstalled first, after which the work files and configuration files could be restored. You are now ready to Proceed to the appropriate Windows Client Configuration chapter of this guide for instructions on setting up your workstations.

Note Prior to installing a Pathways product onto a network, the network operating system should be correctly installed and functioning on the server, and all workstations should be able to successfully attach and login to the server. A qualified computer technician should make any necessary adjustments.

Chapter 2 – Windows XP Professional Client Configuration

Configure the Workstations - Overview Verify that the server and workstations meet all minimum hardware and software requirements as published quarterly in the CCC Technical Requirements document. You can find this document located on the CCC website: http://www.cccis.com/. CCC strongly urges that the server and workstations meet or exceed our recommended hardware specifications to ensure the best performance.

As stated in the Configuring the server section of this guide, the most common protocol used in a NetWare environment is the IPX/SPX protocol. The Microsoft implementation of the IPX/SPX protocol for Windows XP Professional is called the “NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol”.

When the Novell client software is installed, the following required network components will automatically be installed.

• Novell Client for Windows

• NWLink NetBIOS

• NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

These are the only components necessary to get the network up and running. And for the most part, all of the default settings for these components will work just fine.

Note If your network is already set up and running correctly, and is configured to use the IPS/SPX protocol, then you may skip to the Create Pathways users section, later in this chapter. Important! If you haven’t already done so, before proceeding install the correct NetWare client version (as per the CCC Technical Requirements document) on this workstation. If you need further assistance with installing the NetWare Client software, please enlist the services of a qualified consultant or network engineer.

Verify network configuration settings To verify that the required network components are installed and are properly configured, please follow these simple steps:

1 Make certain that you are logged onto Windows as an Administrator.

2 Click Start > Control Panel

3 If the Control Panel is set to Category View mode (designated in the left pane), open Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections. If set to Classic View mode, open Network Connections.

Note If you’re in Classic View mode, the link will read, “Switch to Category View”. If you’re in Category mode, the link will read, “Switch to Classic View”. 4 In Network Connections, right-click the Local Area Connection and select Properties.

5 Verify that the components listed below are present. If not, install the NetWare client software. (Please check the CCC Technical Requirements document for the correct version.)

Note These are the only components necessary to get the network up and running. Additional components listed may be installed for Microsoft networking and should be left alone in case simple Peer-to-Peer network functionality is needed.

6 Select the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol component, and then click the Properties button.

7 Verify that the Frame Type is set to Auto Detect, and then click OK.

8 Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties.

Create Pathways users 1 Make certain that you are logged onto Windows as an Administrator.

2 Click Start > Control Panel.

3 In the left pane, select Switch To Classic View.

Note If you’re in Classic View mode, the link will read, “Switch to Category View”. If you’re in Category mode, the link will read, “Switch to Classic View”. 4 Open Administrative Tools, then Computer Management.

5 In Computer Management, expand Local Users and Groups (by clicking the plus sign next to it).

6 Right-click the Users folder and select New User.

7 Enter the User name “installer” with a password of your choice. (This account will be used for Pathways installation, Client Setup and program update purposes.)

Note We recommend having the same logon name and password on both the server and workstation. This will eliminate users from having to login separately to both the server and their own workstation. 8 Deselect “User must change password at next logon,” and click Create.

Note You may also want to change the settings for the Password never expires and User cannot change password options. 9 Next, enter the User name and Password for the user who will be running Pathways at

this workstation.

10 Deselect “User must change password at next logon” (and make any other selections you want), and then click Create.

11 Repeat steps 9 and 10 for each user who will be running Pathways at this workstation.

12 When finished adding users, click Close.

Add the Installer account to the Administrators group. 1 In Computer Management, under Local Users and Groups, click on the Users folder to

display the contents in the right pane.

2 Now, right-click the “installer” account and select properties.

3 From the Member Of tab, click the Add button.

4 On the Select Groups window, click the Advanced button.

5 Next, click the Find Now button.

6 In the lower window, select the Administrators group, and then click Ok.

7 Click Ok on the Select Users window, and then the “installer” Properties window.

Fast User Switching CCC does not support Pathways running on Windows XP when Fast User Switching has been enabled. The Fast User Switching feature of Windows XP allows multiple users to log onto the same computer without requiring the current user to close their programs. If Pathways were to run simultaneously in two or more sessions on the same system, file corruption could occur. In addition, when you consider the possibility of many logon sessions running simultaneously, each with various applications still open, the effect on performance alone could be quite dramatic. Due to these reasons, Pathways will not be supported to work with Fast User Switching.

Authenticate on the NetWare server 1 Upon boot-up, simultaneously depress the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys on the keyboard when

prompted to do so.

2 In their respective fields, enter the Username and Password for the user that will be running Pathways at this workstation.

3 On the NDS tab (if you don’t see an NDS tab, click the Advanced button), make certain that the correct Tree, Context, and Server information is entered in their respective fields.

Note If the server was configured exactly as described in the Create Pathways Groups and Users section of chapter 1, then the Context must be set to the Pathways Users OU. 4 On the Script tab, verify that the Run Scripts check box is populated, and then click OK.

Important! You must be logged into the NetWare server and the local workstation as “installer” in order to perform Pathways installation, Client Setup, or program updates.

Access Rights One of the features of Windows XP Professional is increased security. System administrators have much greater control over user access to network resources as well as control over user rights and access to the local system. Pathways requires that users have Full Control of both the installation files that reside on the server as well as the Pathways directory that resides locally on each workstation. In order to install, or update the Pathways program, the user must have Administrator level access. This is due to the fact that during the installation or update, program components are being installed and entries are made to the Windows Registry.

Note Administrator level access is only needed during Pathways installation, Client Setup and program updates. The monthly Data and Graphics CD’s can be run by any regular Pathways user. Important! Once Pathways is installed and Client Setup has been run, proper access rights will need to be applied to the local Pathways folder created during the Client Setup process. This includes the server if planning to run Pathways from that station as well. See the Network Installation & Update Guide for Pathways for details. You are now ready to proceed with the installation of your Pathways product. Please refer to the Network Installation & Update Guide for Pathways for more information. Note Prior to installing a Pathways product onto a network, the network operating system should be correctly installed and functioning on the server, and all workstations should be able to successfully attach and login to the server. Verify network configuration settings

1 Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop, (or My Network Places if using Windows ME), and select Properties.

3 Make certain that the Novell NetWare Client option has been selected as the Primary Network Logon.

4 Next, select the IPX /SPX-compatible Protocol (bound to the network adapter), and then click the Properties button.

Chapter 5 – Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Client Configuration


As stated it the Configuring the server section of this guide, the most common protocol used in a NetWare environment is the IPX/SPX protocol. The Microsoft implementation of the IPX/SPX protocol for Windows XP Professional is called the “NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol”.


• Novell Client for Windows NT

• NWLink NetBIOS

6 Choose the correct Adapter from the drop-down menu, and then verify that Auto Detect is selected for the Frame Type.

7 When you are finished, click OK to close the NWLink IPS/SPX Properties sheet.

4 Enter the User name “installer” with a password of your choice. (This account will be

used for Pathways installation, Client Setup and program update purposes.)

8 Finally, Click OK on the New User screen to add the user.

9 Repeat the above steps for each user who will be running Pathways at this workstation. (Substituting the user name “installer” with the correct user name. Also, the other users do not have to be added to the Administrators group, so you can skip that step.)

Access Rights One of the features of Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is increased security. System administrators have much greater control over user access to network resources as well as control over user rights and access to the local system. Pathways requires that users have Full Control of both the installation files that reside on the server as well as the Pathways directory that resides locally on each workstation. In order to install, or update the Pathways program, the user must have Administrator level access. This is due to the fact that during the installation or update, program components are being installed and entries are made to the Windows Registry.

Note Administrator level access is only needed during Pathways installation, Client Setup and program updates. The monthly Data and Graphics CD’s can be run by any regular Pathways user. Important! Once Pathways is installed and Client Setup has been run, proper access rights will need to be applied to the local Pathways folder created during the Client Setup process. This includes the server if planning to run Pathways from that station as well. See the Network Installation & Update Guide for Pathways for details. You are now ready to proceed with the installation of your Pathways product. Please refer to the Network Installation & Update Guide for Pathways for more information.
