The total number of people who have recovered from coronavirus worldwide is 45,175. Total cases worldwide – (Recovered worldwide + Dead worldwide) = Net Active Cases worldwide 89,684 total cases – (45,175 recoveries + 3,058 deaths) = 47,567 net active cases worldwide

General: The new strain (COVID-19) comes from the same family of viruses that causes severe acute respiratory

syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). China’s National Health Commission

(NHC) says that 80 percent of coronavirus fatalities occurred in people over the age of 60, and 75 percent had an

underlying disease. The virus is transmitted between humans, but it is unclear how easily the virus spreads between

people, or during what phase of illness transmission occurs.

Issues with numbers notwithstanding, it appears that COVID-19 rates of infection are leveling off in China while spiking

in other places such as South Korea, Iran, and Italy. A World Health Organization (WHO) official said on 27 February that

the rest of the world—not China—is now WHO’s “greatest concern.”

US government guidance

China: The US Department of State (DoS) raised its travel advisory for China from Level 3 “reconsider travel” to Level 4

“do not travel” on 30 January. The advisory states that those who are currently in China should consider departing using

commercial means. The DoS also announced that it has requested all non-essential US government personnel defer

travel to China due to the outbreak. The US Embassy in Beijing authorized the voluntary departure of non-emergency

personnel and family members of US government employees. The DoS recommended on 3 February that US citizens

remaining in China take precautionary measures, including avoiding large groups and stocking up on food and other

supplies. On 27 January, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) raised its travel notice for China from Level 2: Practice

Enhanced Precautions to Level 3: Avoid Nonessential Travel, which is its highest warning level.

Hong Kong: On 11 February, the US Consulate General in Hong Kong authorized voluntary departure for its non-essential

staff. The CDC rates Hong Kong as Level 1.

South Korea: On 27 February, the DoS raised its travel advisory for South Korea to Level 3 “reconsider travel,” warning

that travelers suspected to have contracted COVID-19 in South Korea could face “travel delays, quarantine, and

extremely expensive medical costs.” The CDC rates South Korea as Level 3. On 29 February, US authorities announced

additional screening measures for travelers from South Korea.

Mongolia: On 27 February, the DoS raised its travel advisory for Mongolia to Level 3 “reconsider travel” due to travel

and transport restrictions imposed in response to the outbreak.
