PIMLICO PRIMARY LOSES ITS HEAD AFTER JUST FOURWEEKSThe head of a new free school, Annaliese Briggs, 27, has steppeddown just four weeks after it opened to 'pursue other opportunities inprimary education.’

In April 2013 it was revealed that principal Briggs was head huntedfrom educational think tank Civitas. When she was appointed she hadnot completed a postgraduate certificate in education. Ms Briggs hashad to defend herself against criticism that she was inexperienced.

Pimlico Primary is sponsored by Future Academies, a charity set upby Lord Nash who this year was appointed a junior education ministerworking under Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Mothers of Pimlico Primary children were surprised having been toldMs Briggs was ill and would be returning. Sources told the Guardianthat Ms Briggs was “not happy because she could not cope with thejob, full stop. It was too much to learn, too quickly.”

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of Westminster Labour Group, said: “The chaos at Pimlico, Churchill Gardens and Millbank PrimaryAcademies, all run by the Future Group which is led by aConservative education minister, needs to be sorted out without delay.

“Michael Gove is clearly conflicted and cannot conduct an inquiry intohis own junior minister’s affairs. The prime minister needs to act swift-ly so that parents and pupils at these three schools can be confidentthat all three schools are being managed in a competent and effectivemanner.”

Susan Rankin-Reid, headteacher of another sister school ChurchillGardens Primary Academy, willleave at Christmas.

Kelly Teddy, the former actingdeputy head at sister schoolMillbank Academy, has alreadybeen appointed to replace MsBriggs.

Miss Briggs is completing aschool-centred initial teachertraining (SCITT) course inWandsworth and will qualify witha postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE).

Being the head of an inner-London school is a tough job which cansometimes be very stressful.

THE CHELSEA & WESTMINSTER SWIMMING CLUB has about 450 youth swimmers, ages 3 to 18, primarily fromWestminster, RBKC and Hammersmith.  You may have seen theirswimmers with the silver hats at Queen Mother Sports Centre.

Queen Mother is one of the club’s main pools, though recently theClub has expanded to the Porchester, Jubilee and Seymour pools, making club youth swimming available in those locations for thefirst time. CWSC, as the Club is known, was named theWestminster Active Club of the Year in 2012 and is Swim21accredited. The Club has been fortunate enough to experienceunprecedented success the last couple of years, including this pastsummer at Nationals, where the Club qualified a record 16 swim-mers and had its first National Champion.

CWSC takes swimmers with some swimming ability into its “hats”program. With swimmers starting as young as 3, the Club has

olderswim-merswhoseentireswim-mingcareerhasbeenwiththe

Club. Swimming is a sport that welcomes children from all overthe area, no matter what school they attend or where they wereborn. In order to do this, the Club needs continued support fromits boroughs, region and national politicians. Its biggest challengeis not the enthusiasm of its swimmers or coaches, but finding poolswhere they can swim. Currently the Club has to turn away 19 outof every 20 interested swimmers. If you have tried out for theClub before, and have not yet been accepted, keep trying and letyour local councillor and MP know that the Club needs moreaccess to swimming pools in Central London. The club maintains a great website, which has a lot of additionalinformation: www.cwswimming.com

A REAL MYSTERY IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOODIf you're not sure what 'private banking' means, you're not alone. In a recent YouGov survey for Duncan Lawrie Private Bank, 32% ofthose questioned said they would be unlikely to consider a privatebank if changing to another provider because they don't know what aprivate bank is, and 34% couldn't name any (1). Matthew Parden, Managing Director of Belgravia-based DuncanLawrie Private Bank said: “The private banking industry has done agreat job in retaining an aura of mystique and exclusivity but this hasbeen to the detriment of many of the UK population, who are desper-ate for a better service but don’t know where to look.“Due to misconceptions, people are overlooking what could be anobvious solution to many of the things that they find disagreeableabout high street banks and building societies, in particular poor customer service.” Duncan Lawrie’s Relationship Managers recently scored 81% forclient satisfaction (20% higher than their peer group) and they currently have capacity to take on a limited number of new clients. If you would like to find out more about Duncan Lawrie or privatebanking in general to see if it’s right for you, visit the website at www.duncanlawrie.com/banking-guide, where you can download theguide, ‘unwrap the secrets to personal banking’ or speak to JohnHilson, New Client Relationship Manager on 0207 201 3010 or 07590 452440.(1) Survey by YouGov of 2,213 adults.(2) Survey by Ledbury Research of 252 Duncan Lawrie clients.

THE PIMLICO DISTRICT HEATING UNDERTAKING (PDHU)opened for the annual Open House London (21 - 22 September) andover 1,000 visitors.

PDHU provides heating and hot water services to over 3,250 homesand businesses via the UK’s first low carbon energy network managed by CityWest Homes, an award winning property servicesprovider based in London.

The PDHU was built in the 1950s, the network was the first major initiative to combat London’s air pollution, ahead of the Clean Air Actof 1956. It originally used waste heat from Battersea Power Stationto supply homes with heating without the use of coal fires, which wascontributing to the London smog.

Visitors were able to view the impressive Caterpillar engines whichpowerPDHU.Those feelingbrave werealso able toclimb the41 metrethermalstore, atowerwhichstores

2,500,000 litres of water.

The CityWest Homes facility provides heating and hot water servicesto over 3,250 homes, schools and businesses in the area. The network releases significantly less carbon dioxide (CO2) into theatmosphere than a conventional power station by generating

electricityclose tothe users. This cutstransmis-sion lossesand cansave up to11,000tonnes ofCO2 emis-

sions a year by displacing the coal fired electricity generation.

Working with Westminster City Council, CityWest Homes has plansto expand the network. This will provide more residents with the bestpossible value for money while helping to make Westminster an envi-ronmentally friendly zone.

During the meeting, they discussed how a_ction can be taken at a

local level to enable people with Tourettes to thrive, and presentedthe Lord Mayor and Dr Brambleby with a document produced byTourettes Action detailing some of the issues surrounding the condition.

Dr Peter Brambleby, Westminster City Council’s director of publichealth. said: “Tourettes Syndrome affects around 50,000 people inthe country – over 2,000 of whom are in Westminster – and yet thecondition is much misunderstood, while people living with it areoften isolated and stigmatised.

“We are committed to ensuring that more is done to ensure thisceases to be the case, and that everybody living with Tourettes inthe borough has the support they need to live full and happy lives.

“The cross-country campaign embarked upon by these fourwomen will go a long way towards achieving that aim, and it isone that we are delighted to support.”

STREET PASTORS was founded in Brixton in 2003 by Rev. Les Isaac. It was basedon a model from Jamaica in which individual churches joinedtogether to take their values out onto the streets. Street Pastorsis an initiative of the Ascension Trust, a registered charity estab-lished in 1993. The initial activities focussed on confronting gangculture, the use of knives and guns nas well as anti-social behav-ior and drunkenness.

In February 2011 a sister organisation School Pastors waslaunched nationally to reduce bullying, anti-social behaviour anddrug use, and to remove barriers to learning. They mentor peopleyoung people within a school setting, and patrol outside to breakpatterns of negative behaviour at the end of the school day.

Individual street pastors are Christians, over the age of 18,committed to a local church for at least one year, who pass anenhanced CRB check and who have a positive reference fromtheir church leader stating that they would be suitable to be aStreet Pastor and are leading a Christian lifestyle. They mustcomplete 12 training sessions spread over a year, covering subjects including conflict management, counselling and basicfirst-aid. Street Pastors is also supported by 'Prayer Pastors',who do not patrol but who provide support to street pastors bypraying for them and sometimes keep in touch with them bymobile phone.

Individual street pastors seek to listen to and talk with people intheir local community, to provide information on local agencies, help and services, and to discourage anti-social behaviour.Practical help provided by street pastors include handing outspace blankets outside nightclubs, and flip-flops to clubbersunable to walk home in their high-heeled footwear; giving outwater, chocolate for energy, personal alarms, carrying bus timetables; and ensuring the safety of vulnerable persons. Streetpastors remove bottles and other potential weapons from thestreets, in order to discourage violence and vandalism. They mayalso have access to sleeping bags stored in church buildings asa last resort.

Many police services have praised the scheme after initialdoubts. Ascension Trust reports that reduction in crime figureshave been recorded in areas where the Street Pastors initiativeshave been operating, which have been confirmed by officialpolice figures. Politicians who have expressed admiration or support for the scheme including David Cameron and BorisJohnson. The general public response to Street Pastors has beenmarkedly positive, even among those who have been observedbeing abusive to the emergency services.

A development towardsabstraction had been evident in his paintings, for example, SquareLeaves (1952) and Winter Harbour (1955) The effect on Heron of theNew York painters, together with his move to live at Eagles Nest, overlooking the cliffs at Zennor, that year was a pivotal point in thetransformation into his now characteristic language of interlinkingforms; his balancing of colour and space. Heron's deepest influenceswere Braque, Matisse and Bonnard and he was connected first of allto the pure abstraction of European lineage, represented by NaumGabo and Pierre Soulages.
