MUNI AUDITOR NAMED
2012CCNA
BY JASON ROESSLEMission Record
It’s time to share your thoughts and help shape downtown Mission.
One of the first opportunities to lend your opinion on what should happen during the revitalization of the area takes place tonight (Nov. 15) in the Leisure Centre audito-rium.
The 3.5-hour event starts with an open house which runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., said Sharon Fletcher, director of long-term planning and special projects, and residents can
speak with the consultants, HBLa-narc, hired to create the plan, and review the storyboards and other materials.
The next portion of the evening is a 30-minute presentation from the consulting team, rounded out by an audience participation-style workshop from 7 to 9 p.m.
“This is open to anyone,” said Fletcher, and will allow people to consider the vision statement and identify concerns.
To encourage participation, the district is rolling out a series of strategies to communicate with
Mission residents.A mass e-mail list (downtown@
mission.ca) has been compiled and receivers can suggest people to add, or forward the message, and the receiver can request to be in-cluded in future disseminations. This e-mail can also be used to send suggestions and feedback to consultants.
More newspaper ads will be pro-duced, and storyboards depicting aspects of the plan will be set up at Mission Library, Leisure Centre, and municipal hall lobby.
Starting Nov. 13, the district has
also leased space in the Commu-nity Policing Office, and will have staff on site Tuesday and Wednes-day afternoons to speak with resi-dents about the proposed plan.
Additionally, a two-day planning charrette is slated for January. The first day is for downtown stake-holders such as owners, lessees and politicians, while the second day is a two-hour public open house.
“The downtown is the city’s pub-lic living room,” said Fletcher, and everyone should make the effort to be involved.
First downtown meeting tonightMission residents are encouraged to take part in the downtown planning process, which begins Nov. 15. RECORD FILE PHOTO

Editor, The Record:When it comes to pro-
viding the last offering of assistance any Canadian veteran will ever need, that being the financial as-sistance to cover the costs of their funeral and burial, what is the Canadian gov-ernment waiting for?
The Royal Canadian Legion first identified this issue at its 2008 national Dominion Convention.
The Legion is dis-mayed by the inaction of this government to bring the long overdue improvements to funeral and burial benefits for veterans and their fami-lies. Instead, it appears the government’s priori-ties are out of sync with the desires of not only veterans, but the public as a whole.
On Nov. 8 Veterans Af-
fairs Canada (VAC) an-nounced it was spending $3.5 million on adver-tising campaigns, social media and “cool prizes” to promote Remembrance Day. While it is important to keep the memory of Canada’s military service alive, this spending could not be more misplaced.
If the average Canadi-an funeral costs $10,000, VAC’s advertising costs
would help 350 veter-ans families with proper funeral and burial costs. Let’s not even talk about the $28 million the gov-ernment spent on promot-ing the War of 1812. Can-ada’s veterans are crum-bling under the weight of disrespect shown to them by the government they served to uphold. There should be no doubt that the issue of adequate fu-
neral and burial support is an urgent issue for World War II and Korean War Veterans.
There are three key is-sues which need to be resolved:
1. The rate of $3,600 provided by The Last Post Fund is greatly inad-equate and has not been increased since 2001;
2. The eligibility for fu-neral and burial benefits
should be granted to low income Canadian Forces veterans.
3. The survivor es-tate exemption was re-duced in 1995 from ap-proximately $24,030 to $12,015 as part of VAC budget reductions. So this means that a veteran’s es-tate if valued at more than $12,000 would not make that person’s surviving spouse eligible for sup-
port for a dignified and respectful funeral.
VAC seems to have some very dull scissors when it comes to “cut-ting the red tape” on the issue of providing the greatest, and last, benefit every veteran deserves — a dignified and respectful funeral and burial.

Editor, The Record:My family has at-
tended Remembrance Day services every year since moving to Mission in 1998.
This year’s was the best one ever. Our entire family wishes to express our thanks for Neville Cox for his pictorial pre-sentation in which he profiled four First World War veterans, all Mission residents at the time.
Cox always gives a very moving and elo-quent remembrance of the war years (this year was his 35th), but this year’s talk and his pre-sentation exceeded all expectations. My father is a Second World War veteran and I grew up being very grateful to all of those who fought for our freedom and sacri-ficed so much on our behalf.
I really appreciate Cox’s eloquent talks every year. It is an an-nual reminder of all that we have to be grateful to the war veterans for. I would like to express my profound thanks not just to Cox, but to all of the hard-working, caring individuals who put to-gether such a respectful and meaningful Remem-brance Day ceremony at the Clarke Theatre.
It made me proud to be a resident of Mission.

Before the 1,200-page, $25-million Cohen Commission report
on the Fraser River sockeye salmon fishery slips beneath the waves, allow me to dip my toe into the river of data that has flowed by in the past three years.
If your information on this hugely complex subject consisted of skimming a few news stories or watching pro-testers on TV, you will likely conclude what urban people have been indoctrinated with for years. The whole issue is salmon farms and whether they are bad or catastrophic.
“Freeze new salmon farms on sockeye migration route: Cohen” said the headline on a Black Press report. Those who read past the headline would learn that Justice Bruce Cohen recommended a freeze on further salmon farms around the Discovery Islands group near Campbell River until 2020. It’s up to the industry to show by that time that the risk is “mini-mal,” or farms there should be shut down.
A B.C. Salmon Farming Association spokesman said only nine of 70 B.C. salmon
farms are in that area. There are no current applications for more.
Let’s say you decide to plunge in, and download the full report from www.cohen-commission.ca. If you go to Volume 2, page 102, you will see a series of graphs that show sockeye runs from rivers other than the Fraser, from Washington all the way up to Alaska.
It’s not a pretty sight. From Wash-ington up to the Central Coast, the Skeena, Nass and up to Yukon’s Klukshu and Alaska’s Alsek, most runs show a decline starting in the 1980s or early 1990s.
This includes runs that migrate down the west side of Vancouver Island, away from salmon farms. Alaska doesn’t allow farms, preferring “ranch-ing” — a strategy that floods the ocean habitat with millions of hatchery fish. These are commer-cially fished and marketed
as “wild.”B.C.’s North Coast has
never had salmon farms. The area has been subject to a moratorium since an NDP-controlled legislative committee gave its verdict on the problem in 2008.
The popular villain in those days was sea lice.
Skeena MLA Robin Austin chaired the com-
mittee that called for an end to open-pen salmon farms in five years. Then-agriculture minister Pat Bell approved one NDP recom-mendation, a mora-torium on salmon farms in North Coast waters.
This was after the Pacific Salmon Forum conducted
its own four-year study, led by former fisheries minister John Fraser.
Similar to Cohen, Fraser concluded that there is no simple answer to this com-plex problem. And they agreed that salmon farms don’t explain it. Cohen’s report makes it clear that the
problem is far larger than could possibly be explained by salmon farms.
Poaching on the Fraser? Cohen didn’t get around to that. His biggest concern was climate change, warm-ing sensitive river waters and affecting ocean condi-tions.
During the Cohen com-mission hearings, the 2010 Fraser sockeye run came in gangbusters, with 35 mil-lion fish. One leading theory is that ash from an Alaska volcano fertilized the ocean, producing algae that sup-ported more salmon feed.
Could it be that salmon ranching from Alaska, Japan and elsewhere is simply depleting the food supply? That too is inconclusive.
Finally, Tides Canada, a U.S. front group that diverts attention from U.S. salmon and oil tankers, spent $25,000 to publicize Cohen evidence. But only as it re-lates to B.C. salmon farms, and how bad they are.

Diehards frustratedThe NHL lockout seems set to go on for weeks, if
not months, and there is still a chance that there may be no NHL hockey at all this season.
While this costs players a lot of money, it may be costing the game itself in more long-term ways. Surveys have indicated that a significant number of NHL ticket buyers are in no rush to go back to the arenas if the lockout is settled.
The economic climate in which this lockout is tak-ing place is much different than it was in 2004-05, when the league lost an entire season to another work stoppage. At that time, economic growth in both Canada and the United States was strong. They were more willing to put up with a labour disruption.
While most Canadian fans are much more likely to be back in their seats when the NHL resumes play, there could be a significant drop in TV viewer-ship. Many fans who watch hockey on TV don’t get a chance to get to NHL games. In markets such as Vancouver and Toronto, it is very hard to get tickets to a game, with many season tickets held by corpo-rations.
However, there is still plenty of good hockey on ice now. Recently, the Canucks’ farm team, Chicago Wolves, played Abbotsford Heat before two close to capacity crowds. AHL action is almost as good as the NHL, and it wasn’t surprising that former Canuck Zach Kassian was one of the stars in both games.
Here in Mission, the Outlaws offer an exciting brand of hockey in an excellent arena at Mission Leisure Centre. Their games can be every bit as exciting as an NHL contest — and at a much lower price.
There are plenty of hockey options available to fans. Many of them are seeking out those options. The NHL and its players had better hope fans retain a keen interest in the game.
Salmon mystery far from solved

The annual Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival starts this weekend with a plethora of raptor-viewing opportunities and free activities.
Visitors can witness the world’s largest gathering of bald eagles. The raptors are drawn to the area by the millions of spawning salm-on that travel up the Fraser River to tributaries, such as the Har-rison River. The estuary is also home to a variety of wildlife, such as trumpeter swans, ducks, seals, bears, coyotes, deer and the white sturgeon.
Although the festival began in 1995 and was one of the largest eagle gatherings at the time, the number of eagles concentrated in the area has grown further since early 2010.
“The Harrison region is part of the winter homeland for over 10,000 bald eagles — the world’s largest concentration of eagles ever witnessed as they forage, fight and feast on the record salm-on runs in the Harrison River,” says David Hancock, Hancock Wildlife Foundation bald eagle biologist.
Hancock will be giving two talks on Sunday: at 9:30 a.m. on the Fraser River Safari tour, and at Tapadera Estates at 1 p.m.
Your starting point can be the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centre on
Lougheed Highway, which will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and staff can guide you to whichever sites interest you.
Starting Nov. 17, the public is invited to visit different venues in Harrison Mills and surrounding areas, including Tapadera Estates, Eagle Point Community Park and Pretty Estates Resort.
For a fee, Fraser River Safari will take you out on the river in
its covered, heated jet boat for a tour. Times are 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., plus 1 and 2:30 p.m.
An Exhibitor’s Fair is sched-uled for both Saturday at Sunday at Leq’a:mel Community Centre. This is a one-stop spot to learn, shop, eat and play, all under one roof.
Don’t miss the educational, environmental, and nature dis-plays, the work of local artists and crafts people, and a variety of green businesses and products.
The Sts’ailes Healing Centre, located at 16300 Morris Valley Rd in Harrison Mills, will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat-urday only, and features bannock, artist demonstrations, Sasquatch Dancers, a salmon lunch and an educational walk and talk.
To continue the festivities, Tourism Harrison will host the Harrison Bald Eagle Weekend, Nov. 24-25. Highlights of the weekend include a photography workshop by expert photographer Graham Osborne, and a talk by Hancock. Boat tours down the Harrison River will also be avail-able to book.
Additional activities events are scheduled in the region through-out December.

BY TOM FLETCHERBlack Press
Chartered accountant Basia Ruta starts work in January as B.C.’s first auditor general for local governments.
The new position caused a stir among local politicians when Premier Christy Clark made it part of her leadership bid for the B.C. Lib-eral Party. Her platform promised to expand the provincial auditor-gen-eral’s office to include a municipal auditor, and to “review the municipal taxation formula.”
Clark’s ministers for local government, Oak
Bay-Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong and now Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, have em-phasized that the Surrey-
based Auditor General for Local Government will compare similar communities through performance audits and publish non-binding rec-ommendations on which are more efficient. That is similar to how provin-cial and federal auditors work, relying on public pressure to move politi-cians to cut down waste.
Local mayors and councillors balked when the idea came up at the 2011 Union of B.C. Mu-nicipalities convention. Some complained about an extra layer of costly bureaucracy, while oth-ers said the province was going to impose tax rate changes on communities.
Those concerns faded as local politicians were assured they wouldn’t lose autonomy, and also faced the prospect of campaigning against extra accountability. Clark promised there would be no costs passed on to local governments to run the auditor’s of-fice. UBCM president Mary Sjostrum, mayor of Quesnel, said Wednes-day she welcomes Ruta’s appointment.
Ruta has worked in the federal Auditor General’s office and was chief fi-nancial officer for Envi-ronment Canada, as well as in private practice au-diting local government, hospital and community organizations.
Tinkering with munici-pal tax rates, especially for industries that sub-sidize popular low resi-dential rates, has been raised and abandoned before, and won’t likely be seen before the next provincial election in May 2013.

The first bright lights of the holiday season will be on display tomorrow night outside Canadian Tire at the Junction Shopping Mall during the second annual Moon-light Madness community celebra-tion and Mission Community Ser-vices’ Christmas Bureau opening.
Mayor Ted Adlem will light the 20-foot Christmas tree at 7 p.m. to kick things off, and there will be sales and events throughout the night until 11 p.m.
Mr. Mikes is hosting a toy drive and the Mission Regional Cham-ber of Commerce is also launch-ing the shop local campaign, Pay It Forward — both programs sup-port the Christmas Bureau.
When you shop local, you are supporting your community. Ac-cording to the Chamber, 73 per cent of every dollar you spend at a locally owned store stays in the community, and 47 per cent remains here even if you shop at a large chain.
“Those dollars then circulate in the community 75 times.”
To support the Pay It Forward program, submit every receipt you get from a Mission store between Nov. 16 to Dec. 15 to the Chamber and 10 cents will be donated to the Christmas Bureau. You can scan or send a copy of the receipt to the chamber’s website (missionchamber.bc.ca) or Facebook page, or drop it off at specially marked boxes around
town. Submit as many receipts as you can, starting at the Junction where there will be great deals at participating stores to help you get your shopping started.
That night only, if you hand in a receipt from a local business or make a donation to the Christmas Bureau, you will get a chance to win a prize — donated by Junc-tion businesses — by spinning the roulette wheel.
More than 25 businesses are taking part in this event. All the night’s events and store specials will be listed at the event tent near the Christmas tree.
Visit each participating store to play the “What’s in the Jar” con-test. Find the jars and write down
what’s in each one on a game card, given out at the event tent. Completed entries can be submit-ted to the same table and random winners will be drawn starting at 10 p.m. The winner will receive the jar and a prize from a local business.
Other activities happening in-clude an ugly Christmas sweater or tie contest, Junction Idol singing contests, a kids’ zone with Santa, and the Library Live and On Tour Car (Lili) will also be on site.
The Mission Elks will be serving hot dogs, burgers and fries with proceeds gong to the Christmas Bureau, and Mr. Mikes (under new ownership) will be serving up Mini Mike burgers for a $2 donation.

15 The Mission Record Thursday, November 15, 2012
Investing in youth projects pays off for the whole community, according to the presi-dent of Mission’s mid-day Rotary Club, Stacey Crawford.
The annual Rotary Dinner and Auction, a joint venture of Mis-sion’s two clubs will be held Nov. 23 at the Best Western Hotel to raise funds for a vari-ety of youth projects. Those who attend, do-nate items or choose to be major sponsors will be helping the youth of Mission from elemen-tary to high school as well as those transition-ing into adulthood.
Among the projects supported by the two clubs are annual post-secondary education scholarships to Mis-
sion graduates, summer camps for elementary students, leadership and career exploration camps for youth 12-25 and op-
portunities for youth to participate in internation-al projects.
Last summer, 11-year-old Jared Kirkwood was
selected by his elementa-ry school to be sponsored by Rotary at Camp Jubi-lee. With words tumbling out as fast as he could manage, Jared described the multitude of camp activities, the friends made and the opportu-nities offered. Archery was his favourite sport at the camp, but best of all was “making friends with every single person there.” His father, Dave, said the major positive for Jared was the interac-tion with so many youth from across the province. It has helped him de-velop the confidence to interact socially and be-come involved with oth-ers in his school.
Rotary Youth Lead-ership Adventures (RYLA) for 18 to 25 year olds instills pas-sion to become a better person and become in-volved in creating bet-ter communities, says Stephanie Turner, a RYLA alumni. Turner and Evan Tyler, anoth-er RYLA alumni, were sponsored by Rotary to attend the four-day re-treat filled with motiva-tional speakers, team-building exercises and opportunities for per-sonal growth.
Tyler took away many lessons, but most im-portantly, he says he learned to listen care-fully and know when to be a leader and when to be a follower. The skills learned at the camp have stressed the im-portance of being com-munity builders.
“We all came away thinking about what we can do to better our com-munities,” Turner said.
Rotary also supports youth in exploring ca-reers in policing by fund-ing participants to the RCMP Youth Academy. A partnership between Mission Public Schools and the RCMP, organizer Glen Schell says many former attendees have gone on to successful careers within the Force while others have dis-covered it may not be the career for them.
Tickets and sponsor-ships for the Rotary Auc-tion and Dinner, which features a show by a professional burlesque dance troupe, are still available by contacting Crawford at [email protected] or calling 604-302-8979.

16 The Mission Record Thursday, November 15, 2012
A long-time Mission resident who quietly served her community continued to do her part even when she passed away last year.
The late Carolyn Edmonds left behind $40,000 to the Mission Healthcare Auxiliary, a group she had served for 35 years. Edmonds served in various positions on the executive, including president, and worked right up to a week or so before her death in December 2011. In the past few years she had to give up her shifts at Reception due to her loss of vi-sion and arthritic pain, but still carried on at home phoning members for the next meeting and any other announcements.
During her years in Mission, Edmonds’ generosity was non-stop. She had been a constant contributor to Transition House, the Mission Hospice Society and donated funds to Mission Community Foundation Hospice fund; she was a Life Member of Hospice. She volunteered at a number of local charities, the Hospice Christmas Tree of Remembrance shifts at Safeway’s or Save On Foods each Christmas; the Cancer Daffodil Days when daffodils were sold outside those stores; she undertook to supply food, including a turkey, toys, clothing and a Christmas tree for a needy family each year.
The funds Edmonds left behind for the auxiliary will be used towards the new building for Complex Care at Mission Memorial Hospital in her memory.

The Mission Record Thursday, November 15, 2012 17
Flu shot clinics have started in Mission, with the final one happen-ing Nov. 29 at the Leisure Centre.
While seniors are particularly vul-nerable to the flu, every year other-wise healthy children also become seriously ill or even die because they didn’t get a flu shot, according to Fraser Health Authority (FHA).
Local residents are reminded that the flu shot is provided free of charge to those at highest risk of severe flu illness, as well as those who are close contacts or caregivers.
New this year, healthy children aged six months to less than five
years of age, and household contacts and caregivers of children less than five years of age are eligible for the free vaccine.
Influenza is the leading cause of preventable death due to infectious disease in Canada, killing thousands of Canadians every year and hospi-talizing thousands more. Influenza spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, face-to-face contact and by touching sur-faces such as door knobs and tele-phones that have been contaminated with the virus, said FHA. The flu season usually runs from November
to April with an estimated 10-25 per cent of people infected each year. A person can have the flu virus with-out knowing it, and pass it to some-one who may become seriously ill. An estimated 200-300 Fraser Health residents, mainly seniors, die every year from complications of influ-enza infection.
The final clinic will be Nov. 29 at the Mission Leisure Centre (7650 Grand St.), 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Bring your CareCard or other government I.D. (valid driver’s li-cense) to the clinic, and please wear a short-sleeved shirt.

THE VIEW FROM SPACESeeing images of Earth from space can induce a variety of powerful feelings, from awe over its beauty to fear over its apparent fragility. Ours is a living, breathing planet and at least so far, we haven’t found any others where life occurs. Seeing pictures of the Earth from outer space is one thing; actually seeing the Earth from outer space is almost invariably a life-changing experience. Consider what various astronauts have said about their view of our planet from space. James Irwin remarked “That beautiful, warm, living object looked so fragile, so delicate, that if you touched it with a finger it would crumble and fall apart. Seeing this has to change a man, has to make a man appreciate the creation of God and the love of God.” Edgar Mitchell observed “Suddenly, from behind the rim of the moon, in long, slow-motion moments of immense majesty, there emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel . . . rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery. It takes more than a moment to fully realize this is Earth . . . home.” Mitchell says elsewhere that “My view of our planet was a glimpse of divinity.” Finally, consider what Taylor Wang felt upon seeing Earth from space: “A Chinese tale tells of some men sent to harm a young girl who, upon seeing her beauty, become her protectors rather than her violators. That’s how I felt seeing the Earth for the first time. I could not help but love and cherish her.” Earth is our home and is entrusted to us for its protection.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Would you leave $500 cash sitting in an unlocked car and walk away? You may say no, but many of you are doing this without realizing it.
RCMP statistics indicate that vehicle thefts in the District of Mission are up 63 per cent over last year. What can we do to bring this number down? Here are some suggestions.
Lock your car This is your first
defense against theft. Have you ever not locked your door as you dash into the convenience store? Many drivers who fail to lock the doors of their vehicle will also leave their keys in the
ignition. The easiest car to break into is the one that’s unlocked. People think that having their car parked at their home makes it safe. However, it only takes a few seconds to remove valuables from an unlocked car. Never assume that because you don’t have expensive electronics in your car that thieves won’t bother your car. You may have your work ID, or spare keys, or spare change in your car, or something that can be used to steal your ID, or a letter that has your address on it.
Leave no valuables visible inside the car
The only barrier between that $500 GPS system, $250 IPod, or
$1,500 laptop, your purse or briefcase is a piece of glass that can easily be smashed. Leaving your valuables or what may appear to be valuable inside your car in plain view is advertising for trouble. If you have to leave something in the car for a short time, conceal it in the trunk, the space under a seat or a blanket.
Be mindful about the inside of your automobile
Thieves don’t want to waste time looking for valuables. They want to know something of value is in the car before they even touch
it. Keep a clean car with nothing of value in it.
Secure your car with a good alarm system or counter theft system
These days many cars come with anti-theft devices, so if you have one, use it. A car alarm is the number one electronic deterrent for a-would-be-intruder. Criminals want easy low risk targets.
Watch where you park
Park your vehicle in a well-lit, high traffic area where passersby, either walking or driving, may serve as
a deterrent to someone who might steal from your car. Try to park near a storefront that will still be brightly lighted, on a main thoroughfare, or under a street light. If your car is too visible it can help deter a criminal for checking it out. If you have a garage at your residence or job, utilize it to protect your car.
Report it Notify your break-
in to the RCMP right away, so that can determine if there are a rash of similar crimes in your neighborhood, and they can take appropriate steps.
Protect your car and contents
The September warm weather was a great welcome to the volunteers of Mission Adopt-a-Block as they came together to begin their annual fall cleanup events.
This years’ events kicked off with the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up in partnership with the Mission Clubhouse on Sept. 21. This clean-up was open to the public and took place along the shores of Hatzic Lake. Over 170 kg of trash was removed.
Next, Adopt-A-Block held the third annual Stream Clean-up on Sept. 22. Two Mission non-profit groups tended to portions of Lane Creek next to the Mission library and D’Herbomez Creek at Heritage Park.
This was followed by another stream clean-up at Windebank Creek, to celebrate World Rivers Day, on Sept. 30, in partnership with volunteers from Cedarbrooke Chateau.
After a full week of waterway cleanups, Adopt-a-Block volunteers moved on to complete the annual Fall Litter Clean-Up over three Saturdays in October.
This clean-up covered several areas around town including Heritage Park, the industrial and harbor areas. This years 108 volunteers collected over 1,180 kg of waste including over 210 lbs of metal.
Adopt-A-Block is a non-profit organization. Each year the society welcomes non-profit groups to participate in the Spring/Fall clean-up for the remuneration of
up to $250 to put towards their special programs and events. All Mission non-profit groups are invited to submit their application for the Spring Litter Clean-Up by Jan. 30, 2013.
Applications are available online at: www.missionadoptablock.com. Beginning 2013, groups will be eligible to earn up to $400 for their club or group.
For information call 604-826-9423 or e-mail [email protected].

“We are pleased that David is stepping up to lead our board,” says Executive Director Vicki Raw. “He has been a trustee for the past year and brings knowledge of our organization as well as his vast experience as a lawyer to this posi-tion.”
Thompson replaces Chilliwack’s Maggie Re-imer who served as chair
for the past three years.“We thank Maggie
for her dedication and hard work which saw us through the Campaign for Health Care Excel-lence in Chilliwack and the initial planning for our upcoming fundrais-ing campaign in Mis-sion,” said Raw.
Joining Thompson on the executive com-mittee are Greg Knill, editor of The Chilliwack Progress, as vice-chair; Gerry Carron, relation-ship manager of TD Commercial Banking in Abbotsford, as treasur-er; Grace Saris, branch
manager of Vancity in Mission, as secretary; and members-at-large, Jinder Sarowa, principal of Robert Bateman Sec-ondary School in Ab-botsford, and Mission’s Heather Stewart.
Rounding out the board are Jason Lum, di-rector of business devel-opment at Myriad Group of Companies and Chilli-wack city councillor; retired business owner Lorraine Hughes of Ab-botsford; and newly elected Mission member Kathleen Rake, a com-munications and social media consultant at Click
Media Works.Appointed members
are Ethel Hooge of the Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society, and Fraser Health’s Diane Miller, executive direc-tor of Chilliwack Gener-al Hospital and Mission Memorial Hospital.
The FVHCF was in-corporated in April 2000 to support the hospitals and health care services within the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital Dis-trict and is governed by a board of trustees made up of volunteers from the communities served by the foundation.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is looking for volunteers to help pro-vide a range of free ser-vices to families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
Volunteers help the Society with everything from making phone calls to caregivers to facilitat-ing support groups.
The need right now is for local volunteers who can facilitate local sup-port groups that meet each month.
The position has a few basic requirements:
• excellent listening and empathetic skills
• knowledge of demen-tia or a willingness to learn
• facilitation skills or a willingness to learn
• formal or informal caregiving is an asset
Training is provided and a one-year commit-ment is required.
For more information on the volunteer posi-tions, contact Armit at 604-859-3889 or [email protected].

Winter clothing donations are needed at Haven in the Hollow, a first-stage housing shelter.
They need coats, scarves, hats, mitts or gloves for men and women (mostly men). Donations can be dropped off at the facility (32646 Logan Ave.) For more information call 604-820-9008.
Haven in the Hollow asking for donations Mission Leisure Centre’s ice rink is one
of five across Canada that will earn funds through purchases of specially marked Mars candy bars.
The Play Your Part campaign is under-way, and when you buy a Mars, then enter the PIN found inside the wrapper at mars-bar.ca, this activates a $5 contribution to-
wards the local rink, courtesy of the candy bar company. Activating the code also en-ters you in a chance to win an instant prize.
The local Leisure Centre will benefit from a minimum of $5,000, and could receive up to a maximum of $20,000 to-wards hockey-related improvements and renovations.
The Leisure Centre is used by minor hockey, lacrosse and ball hockey players, and in 2014 will play host to the B.C. Win-ter Games. Any money derived from the campaign will be put towards replacing the arena’s score clock, which is more than 15 years old, and has recently become unreli-able, according to a press release.

28 The Mission Record Thursday, November 15, 2012
BY JASON ROESSLEMission Record
A board-approved course developed by a Hatzic Secondary
School teacher is al-lowing volleyball players to learn the finer points of the game all while help-ing younger students
succeed in the sport.The Volleyball
Leadership program offers skills and of-ficiating for Grade 10s, leadership and
management at Grade 11 and mentorship for Grade 12 students, with volunteer com-mitments running 12 hours in the first
year, 20 in the second, and 30 in the third and fourth years, said Carolyn Chezzi, pro-gram creator.
The course is out of cycle with the rest of the school, mean-ing students must at-tend in mornings and on weekends, she ex-plained.
“We provide a safe, fun, encouraging en-vironment for all abil-ities,” said the HSS teacher, who runs the classes alongside fel-low educator Lorraine Mar.
Between 30-40 stu-dents are currently tak-ing part, said Chezzi, who said the impetus for the program was a shortage of coach-ing staff and referees. Many of the students become certified vol-leyball referees which enables them to of-ficiate matches and, eventually, get paid.
Four tournaments a year are organized through the program, and the leadership students also go out to Mission elementary schools to help coach and mentor the young-er players.
Mar’s Grade 10 girls team has been having a phenomenal season, said Chezzi.
The group finished first in the Abbots-ford/Mission league and is ranked second going into the Fraser Valleys after defeat-ing MEI, Earl Marriot and Kelowna second-ary schools in the past couple weeks.
Starting today (Nov. 15), HSS will be host-ing Walnut Grove and Surrey Christian starting at 5 p.m., and Hatzic will play the winner at 7 p.m., said Chezzi.
The next games will be at DW Poppy in Langley Friday and Saturday and the top five finishing teams will move onto pro-vincials.

The Mission Record Thursday, November 15, 2012 29The Mission Record Thursday, November 15, 2012 29
Mission’s AA junior varsity football team took down the previ-ously undefeated Carson Graham squad last Wednesday 27-0, pro-pelling the team to today’s game in which a victory would send the Roadrunners into the semi-finals.
Carson Graham was the number one seed team in the division and the western conference champi-ons, but they were no match for Mission.
After two early season losses, the Roadrunners have hit their stride at the right time, winning their last four games by an aver-age of 38 points, said coach John Kapty.
“Playoff wins always feel great, but this was a really good one. We played our best game of the season and got a huge win against a really good team.”
Bryce Fillion carried the ball 27 times for 115 yards and three touchdowns, while Jesse Walker returned a punt 63 yards for six points.
“Bryce and Jesse carried our of-fense today. Our O-line did a great job, and those two guys just kept
making big plays,” said Kapty. “We drove the ball very well. We weren’t getting the big plays, we just moved down the field con-sistently and scored touchdowns when we got the chance.”
On defense LBs Peter Kulba and Dayton Robertson led the way with seven tackles each, while Kulba added two late interceptions to crush any comeback chances. Dylan Uhrich and Rayl Paling each recorded a sack. Mission had five interceptions in total, with Walker, Bicky Gill and Inderpreet Herr each adding one.
The Nov. 15 game is against South Kamloops and starts at 2:15 p.m.
Varsity knocks out Nechako Valley
An upset win over Nechako Val-ley last Saturday at BC Place Sta-dium now pits the Mission Road-runners’ varsity football team up against Windsor Nov. 17 at UBC.
“We were pleased to get done what we needed to today to ad-vance to the next round. Our next opponent Windsor, will offer some difficult challenges and we will need to work hard in practice this week to prepare for them,” said coach Kevin Watrin.
In the first quarter Wayde Car-penter ran an interception 47 yards for a touchdown, and ended the game with two catches, one at 72 yards, and three tackles. Receiver Tyler McStravick also grabbed two out of the air for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Kevin Wiens and Evan Hor-ton continued their season-long offensive dominance, with Wiens going four for seven for 129 yards and three touchdowns, and Horton passing two for four for 18 yards and touchdown. Horton also con-tributed six tackles on the defen-sive line.
Arjun Bhogal tallied also notched five tackles, and Felix Horn had four.
This Saturday’s game starts at 5:30 p.m.
