The Place Christ Prepares For Us – Part 1

In 2008 Pope Benedict XVI made his first visit to the United States. Whenever the Pope visits, it is an extraordinary event, especially for those of us who are Roman Catholic. There is always more than ample media coverage whenever a Pope visits. What the Pope has to say, or what he didn’t say, is analyzed and interpreted and evaluated for us in the papers and on the news. A papal visit is big. Imagine what planning it takes to accomplish something like this. The Pope’s every move is carefully planned: where he will stand, where he will walk, where he will stay, where he will eat and sleep, who he will visit, and who he will converse with and where he will say Mass. A papal visit is something for which careful, strategic and meticulous preparations are made. Catholics want the Pope to feel welcome and comfortable while he’s here. Even President Bush himself went to greet the Pope when his plane landed at Andrews Air Force Base. When the Pope comes to visit, great preparations have been made. And such is the case with any foreign dignitary who visits. But even we ordinary folk, when we have someone coming to visit us, or to stay with us for a while, don’t we make preparations? We clean up the house. We prepare a guest room. We change the sheets, put extra towels out. We plan a dinner menu. We plan things to do while our guests are with us. And so on. We make preparations. It’s what you do when you have someone coming over. What an amazing thing it is to consider that God is preparing for our arrival. Jesus tells us that He goes to prepare a place for you and for me and that He will come and take us there, and we will be where He is. Not only has Jesus come to give us life and an abundant life, a life that could never leave us wanting, He goes far beyond that. Jesus goes to prepare a place for us in His Father’s House. We don’t often hear much about Heaven. Somehow we have assumed that we cannot talk about it. Generally, people regard the topic of the life of the world to come either as too mysterious and wonderful for words, which means there’s no point in trying to talk about it anyway, or that talking about it is somehow forbidden. We mustn’t spend our time considering what Heaven might be like because we have to keep our noses to the grindstone down here on earth and leave such matters to the Almighty. Nonsense. Jesus tells us something about Heaven in the Gospels. He doesn’t spell out all the details, that’s true. But Jesus wants us to know that it’s real. And He tells us about it because He wants to set our minds and our hearts at ease. We can rest assured that there is a place for us in the life of the world to come. You

can count on it. Believe in God and in Jesus Christ. To be continued . . .

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Monday 3:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. Monday 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. Tuesday 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m.

Thursday 11:00 p.m.—12:00 Midnight Friday 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

lunes 3:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. lunes 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.

martes 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. jueves 11:00 p.m.—12:00 media noche

viernes 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

Come join the Catholic Way Bible Study Thursday September 6th as we explore the book of Genesis! We will examine the themes of creation, sin, salvation, covenant and the calling of the Chosen People. The first eleven chapters deal with God and humanity at large. The remaining ones address the special role of the people called to be His very own. You will delve into the unforgettable characters of Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sara, Jacob and Joseph. In addition to the core themes, the study will discuss the relationship between faith and science, the Theology of the Body, moral absolutes versus cultural relativism, the question of evil and so much more!

We welcome all! Whether you are new or experienced in studying the bible, you will gain a deeper understanding of Sacred Scripture while making new friends! All you need is your bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church! We meet every Thursday from 10am-12pm from September through April upstairs in Kemper Hall, Room 205. We do break for the holidays from Thanksgiving through the New Year. The study is $9 which covers the cost of all lessons. If you want additional information, please call Julia Bradford at 281-748-4124 or email at: [email protected].

DIAPER APPEAL We, at the Society of St Vincent de Paul Notre Dame conference, distribute the diapers we receive to the families that come to our food pantry. Our neighbors in need may come to us once a month for food for about 5 meals and diapers for

about 2 days depending how far they are stretched. This past year, we have been able to purchased small sized diapers from San Antonio Food Bank very cheaply. However, we perpetually have a need for size 4 and size 5 diapers; we really need size 4 and 5.

In July, of the 497 families coming to us for food, 76 also received diapers; some for two toddlers. 353 members were listed in these 76 families. Most of the month we were out of size 4 and 5 or distribution would have been greater.

If you wish to volunteer, please contact us for a variety of opportunities. We would love to accommodate you!

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. We are grateful to Red Anderson for several mint-condition books from her wonderful store. Two with the same title, In My Own Words, looking like fraternal twins, caught my attention. Both by female Catholic authors, edited by younger writers, they combine biographical details with exhortations to a full Christian life, from ladies born in 1897 in Brooklyn, NY, and in 1910 in Skoplje, Albania. One has been declared a saint, and the other’s process is well along. Dorothy Day left many writings in addition to her regular articles in the Catholic Worker, the monthly newspaper which she launched in 1933. Phyllis Zagano has chosen and artfully arranged revealing passages from each of the five decades of Day’s mature life: “The Thirties: Founding the Movement; The Forties: The War Years; The Fifties: Pacifism and the Atomic Bomb; The Sixties: Civil Rights and Civil Disobedience; and The Seventies: The Pilgrimage Continued. A contemporary photograph of Day is on the title page of each section, and the picture for “The Seventies” is a charming one of St. Teresa visiting her. St. Teresa of Calcutta is represented by 109 pages of unattributed brief “anecdotes and sayings”, arranged by one of her core followers, José Luis Gonzalez-Balado, from “messages to those involved in her work”. Following a brief biographical sketch, he assembles the quotations in thirteen topics: Holiness, Prayer, Generosity, Christ in the Poor, Love, Home and Family, Virtues, Mary, Life and Death, Smiles, Money, Suffering, Loneliness, God and Christianity, and Our Mission. Each topic is preceded by a title page with a photograph of the saint and a succinct comment on the topic.
