F u n e r a l s e r v i c e s w e r e held a t 2 p . m . T u e s d a y in M a m r e l u n d L u t h e r -an C h u r c h f o r Adolph W. Nelson of 13121 P a i n e Avenue who p a s s e d away Sa tu rday , J u l y 2, a t the Grand Rap ids home of h i s son , M e r r i t t N e l s o n . He was 72.
A na t ive of Spa r t a Townsh ip , M r . N e l s o n s e r v e d 26 y e a r s on the Grand Rapids f i r e d e p a r t m e n t b e f o r e r e -t i r ing In 1945. He s e r v e d a s county f i r e chief f r o m 1947 to 1958 and was r e s p o n s i b l e f o r the o r g a n i z a t i o n of m a n y township v o l u n t e e r f i r e d e -p a r t m e n t s .
A s a Grand R a p i d s f i r e m a n , M r . N e l s o n l e c t u r e d on f i r e p reven t ion in c i ty schoo l s f o r many y e a r s . He a l s o w a s i n s t r u m e n t a l with the l a t e P o l i c e Chief F r a n k O 'Mal ley and Cap ta in C h a r l e s D. Winslow and o t h e r s in founding Youth C o m m o n -weal th , Inc.
