NOTICE boardJune-July 2016

ST LAWRENCE Church Pre-School, based at Hillhouse Church of England Primary School, Ninefields, Waltham Abbey, is teaching its children about gardening and the environment.

Co-operative Funeralcare Waltham Abbey is sponsoring these activities and Phil Clegg and Lisa Bentley from the Co-op presented Nikki Murphy, the pre-school manager, the committee of the pre-school and the children with six trays of plants, two large bags of compost and two packets of cress seeds on April 14 (right).

Phil said: "Co-operative Funeralcare is not just for the sad times – we wanted to support the local community and encourage children to explore their

environment while at the same time getting very messy!"

Nikki added that the generous gifts would allow the children to

discover different sorts of plants, see how they grow and discuss colours.

Revd Kelvin Woolmer, chair of the pre-school

governing body, said: “I was delighted when Nikki said she wanted to teach the children how to grow plants and learn how to look after the

environment. When I mentioned it to Lisa Bentley at the Co-op she was so supportive and we are grateful that the Co-op wanted to be involved and have helped so much by sponsoring the whole project."

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? (left to right): Revd Kelvin Woolmer, chair of the preschool governing body, Phil Clegg and Lisa Bentley from Co-operative Funeralcare, preschool manager Nikki Murphy, and members of the governing body, with the St Lawrence Church Pre-School children.

l Send your church school's report to Month editor Jon Longman at [email protected], stating that parental permission has been given for photos.

DIOCESAN CYCLE OF PRAYER — JUNE and JULY 2016

DIOCESAN Cycle of Prayer editor Revd Bill Howes has died just days before his 70th birthday.

Bishop Stephen has led the tributes to Bill , who was the Assistant Priest at Coggeshall St Peter ad Vincula.

Bishop Stephen said: "Bill Howes was a wonderfully faithful priest.

"Bill loved the people he served and they loved him back. He was a man with a servant heart.

"For 12 years right up until his diagnosis and hospitalisation a few weeks ago he edited the diocesan Cycle of Prayer.

"Bill knew that prayer mattered, that it changes things.

"We now give thanks for his life and ministry and we pray for him; for his wife Carol, for their family and for the churches and communities where he served. May he rest in peace and rise in glory."

Licensed Lay Minister: John Shaw.l Diocese of Coventry (Canterbury).4 Saturday Petroc, Abbot of Padstow, 6th centuryl The 'widow’s mite' from today’s Gospel reading (Mark 12.38 to end) is often used to mean a small amount. But Jesus means the opposite – he means that she gave from her poverty everything that she had. Hers is the deeply radical response to the love of God

that Jesus expects of those who seek to follow him.l Diocese of Cueibet (Sudan).5 THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY l World Environment Day—Loving Father, we praise and thank you for the beauty and goodness of creation around us. Over the past century we have noticed the diminution of the living diversity of creation and of the health of the ecosystems that support it; help us to do our part to stop further decline in the health of our planet by the way we live our lives.l Church of the Province of Myanmar (Burma) and Most Revd Stephen Than Myint Oo, Archbishop.6 Monday Ini Kopuria, Founder of the Melanesian Brotherhood, 1945

His is a beautiful example of generosity. Certainly he was generous with his giving – he sold some land and gave the proceeds to the community. But generosity seems to have been part of his whole character. He shows us that love and service can speak powerfully of the values of the Gospel.l Diocese of Cyprus and The Gulf (Jerusalem & Middle East).

Cycling to church?VELOSTREAMS would like to invite you to join them on "a journey of discovery with God on 2 wheels".

"The vision is a cycling community who also want to know God better, and to reach out to cyclists, families, and young people alike," says Velostreams' joint organiser Colin Baldwin of St Stephen's, Prittlewell.

"Imagine taking a group of young underprivileged teenagers on a trip to see a Tour de France stage or watching a Paris-Roubaix race in person. Imagine raising funds for people who can't afford bikes? What if we could fill a velodrome for the day of young people in our community for an experience of a lifetime. What if we built a community that taught young children to learn how to cycle, rooted and grounded in the love of Jesus as an outpouring of our love for God?

"This is a new venture, and a new thing, a fresh expression of exploring how we, as a church do mission and evangelism. Please prayerfully consider if you would like to be a part of this community. Join us as we ride on the slipstream of God." l Contact Colin on 07789 511910 or Jeremy Blenes on 07538 545120 for details of the rides on May 29 (Southend, Rochford, Hockley, Hullbridge, Battlesbridge, South Woodham Ferrers, Latchingdon, Steeple to Bradwell on Sea), June 26, July 31 and August 28.
