Density
Notes
What is density?Density is a comparison of how much
matter there is in a certain amount of space. (how compact matter is)
Mass: how much matter makes up an object
Volume: how much matter can fit in a place
Which one is more dense?
Demonstration: People in a square
How about this: Which square is more dense?
A B
Which one is more dense?
Now which one is more dense?
B
A
Equations?
Density = mass OR mass ÷ volume.
volume
Units for density: g
cm3
Why is this the unit for density? unit for mass divided by unit for volume
ALWAYS REMEMBER
UNITS!
Sample 1: (Easy)
Frank has a paper clip. It has a mass of 9g and a volume of 3cm3. What is its density?
Step 1. Write the formula
D = M V
Step 2: Substitute in what you know.
D = 9 g 3 cm3
Step 3: Solve for unknown variable.
Step 4: Label your answer
D = 9 g 3 cm3
D = 3g/cm3
= 3 g/cm3
Sample Problem #2 (Medium)You have a sample of plastic whose density
is 0.78 g/cm3 and has a volume of 4 cm3. What is the mass of the plastic?
Step 1. Write the formulaD = M
VStep 2: Substitute in what you know.
0.78 g/cm3 = M 4 cm3
Step 3: Solve for unknown variable.
Step 4: Labeled answer
Mass = 3.12 g
0.78 g/cm3 = M 4 cm3
x 4 cm34 cm3 x
4 x 0.78 g = M
3.12 g = M
Sample Problem #3 (Hard)You have a sample of silver whose density
is 10.5 g/cm3, and the mass of your silver is 3 g. What is the volume of the silver?
Step 1. Write the formulaD = M
V
Step 2: Substitute in what you know
10.5 g/cm3 = 3 g V
Step 3: Solve for unknown variable.
10.5 g/cm3 = 3 g
V x V V x
V x 10.5 g/cm3 = 3 g
10.5 g/cm3 10.5 g/cm3
V = 3 10.5 cm3
= 0.29 cm3
Step 4: Labeled answerVolume = 0.29 cm3
Liquid Layers
If you pour together liquids that don’t mix and have different densities, they will form liquid layers.
The liquid with the highest density will be on the bottom.
The liquid with the lowest density will be on the top.

Liquid Layers….
Check out this picture from your book. Which layer has the highest density?
Which layer has the lowest density?
Imagine that the liquids have the following densities: 10g/cm3. 3g/cm3.6g/cm3. 5g/cm3.
Which number would go with which layer?
Liquid Layers – Try with your neighbor
Which liquid has the highest density?
Which liquid has the lowest density?
Which liquid has the middle density?
Liquid Layers – Try on your own!
Imagine that the liquids on the right have the following densities:15g/cm3 10g/cm3
3g/cm3 9g/cm3
7g/cm3 12g/cm3
Match the colors to the correct densities.
3g/cm3
7g/cm3
9g/cm3
10g/cm3
12g/cm3
15g/cm3
Review
What is the formula for density?What happens if you pour together liquids
that have different densities?Will the liquid on the top have the highest
or lowest density?Will the liquid on the bottom have the
highest or lowest density?
