The b earing of a particular location P from an observer

    O contains two components:

1] the acute angle line OP makes with the north-south line;and

2] an indication if the angle is formed towards the east or west

A course or heading of a ship or plane is the angleformed with the initial side at the north ray measured

clockwise; if the ship is due north, then its course is 0; dueeast, 90; due south, 180; due west, 270.

    Sine Cosine

Standard formula of sine and cosine functions:f( )=a sinb g( )=a cos b

Properties of the sine and cosine functions:y the domain of the co/sine function is and the range is

y|-1 y 1 y the maximum value of the co/sine function is 1 and the

minimum value is -1y the co/sine function is a continuous function; it has no

break in its graphy the sine function is periodic

The period is the length of interval needed to completeone cycle; 2 |b|

The amplitude is half of the absolute difference betweenthe maximum value and the minimum value; |a|

Translations of the graphs of sine and cosine

    Sine f =asinb -h +kCosine g =acos b -h +k

    Domain Range [- a +k, a +k]P eriod [h,h+p]

y if h>0 then the graph shifts to the righty if h0 then the graph shifts upwardy if k
