Vol 2. No 11 October 27, 2015 On Friday 10/23 we had the second meeting to prepare the Parade of Light in the Rotary Room with Yody Yehle from Plymouth, Tammy Demetrus from Up Country and myself. Judy Finch of Ione was unable to attend the meet- ing. Yody, very swiftly made a sketch of the Rotary float, we will have a giant gift wrapped box in the middle surround- ed by smaller ones (all with lights) and a board “Be a gift to the World”. On the sides we will have boards with the Ro- tary sign and the names of the four clubs. In the back we will have two LED Light Showers. The participants will provide their own lights on hats, shoes, necklaces etc. Jim Wilson offered help with the electric part (we will have a small generator). We ask all the club members to help us with shiny gift wrap, ribbons and strings of lights. The board will be de- signed by our own artists to keep the expenses down. I am very pleased to see the 4-Clubs Mar- keting Plan getting traction. The Com- mittee is doing an excellent job, each club will get a report at their board meet- ings. We had an offer from Al Lennox to have the American Legion Hall for free on December 11 if we want to have a multi-club Christmas Party. They will open and attend the bar. Up Country is already committed for their Christmas party on the same day at their regular meeting place but I heard from some other club members that the parties at the American Hall are always great. We will have to provide the catering. I got an email from the Kiwanis Club President, they will have a special break- fast on 11/18 at 7:00 AM at Mel and Faye’s banquet room to honor the fire- fighters. The price will be $16 to $18 per person, depending on numbers. I want to invite Chris Waters to be pre- sent as a guest. Let me know whom else would like to attend and indicate any special guest. ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? By David Postic, a member of the Rotaract and Interact Committee

and a past president of the Rotaract Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA

We all know and love The Four-Way Test. In many ways, it’s an improvement on the age-old golden rule that you should treat oth-ers the way you wish to be treated. It’s a guide for living, a tool for decision making, a moral code. While Rotary has been served well by these four questions, they may not be enough in an era in which Rotary is trying to appeal to more people and have a broader im-pact.

There is another crucial question that we as Rotary members must always ask ourselves, and it is this: Is it fun? This is the question I ask myself with everything I do. If it isn’t fun, I don’t do it. Some people may scoff at that mentality, but in my mind, life is too short to waste on things I don’t enjoy. There are a hundred other organiza-tions I could be a part of. If Rotary isn’t fun, why should I join? And if I am already a member, but I’m not having fun, why should I stay?

Of course, I speak for myself, and perhaps I can also presume to speak for other young people. But I imagine that how I feel is also how many Rotary members feel all over the world. We all want to have fun while serving the sick, the impoverished, the embattled, and the hungry. And in my experience, Rotary can be the most fun part of my life.

But often, clubs become so entrenched in their habits that they forget to have fun. If Rotary isn’t fun, how can we light a fire in the hearts of our members? How can we increase our membership? How can we survive? We must constantly ask ourselves: Is what we are doing fun?

This may not be a question fit for enshrining in the codes of Rotary, and perhaps it doesn’t even warrant recita-tion at weekly meetings. However, it’s probably the most important question we can ask ourselves when making decisions in our clubs. What we do in Rotary is not primarily for our own benefit, but people must enjoy Rotary if it is to survive. This is the real golden rule of Rotary clubs: If what we do isn’t fun, then it’s not worth doing.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY 2.0 The current version of the member-ship directory was a labor of love from John Bree’s efforts when he used the online data. As we have found out, most of that data needs to be updated. Elizabeth Rhein is cur-rently working on the printed version of our club directory. Whereas the starting point for all of the membership’s data is the online membership directory, we could help Elizabeth with this project by (1) verify that your info on the club’s website is cur-rent and accurate, (2) respond to the email that she will send (has sent?) you, and (3)contact her ASAP to verify that she has your correct info. Elizabeth is working hard to make sure that the next version is even better. If you have not heard from her yet, please call her directly.

AND THE WINNER IS… After many weeks of $20 fines, the Paul Harris Fellowship board was finally sold out. Last week we had the drawing to see

who would be the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Tickets

with corresponding let- ters and number were drawn by two of our guests. Tickets #2 and #C found the winning square to be occupied by club member Rick Sprenkel. This is Rick’s second PHF award. Congratulations Rick! Oh, yeah… he doesn’t know yet since Rick and Joann are on another one of their semiannual cruises...

LUKA’S GRAND OPENING Frank announced that the grand opening for Luka’s will be Tuesday Oct 27th from 5:00-7:00pm. Located at 35 Main Street, Jackson, Luka’s is not just a basic bakery, but a bakery which allows Frank to show off his artful talent. Stop by and show your support to Frank and Stan on your way to Tuesday’s rotary club meeting. You just might receive a bit of a treat even if you are not in costume.

OUR TRAVELING ROTARIAN

Past President D’Arcy Porter may be

absent from our weely meetings, but D’Arcy and Michelle are taking ad-

vantage of their travels to visit Italian clubs to spread goodwill and better

friendships. Here he is shown at the Rotary Club of Augusta Sicily last

week. On the far left is their District Governor and to his left is the club

President.

MEETING RECAP

TRIVIA CHALLANGE

Last week, six guests joined us for our trial run of the Trivia Challenge.

Art Long and the committee did an outstanding job as we struggled to

understand the rules and the setup. It was pretty clear that we needed

more than the 20 minutes allotted for the Q&A period. The winning

team is going to be treated to a complimentary round of drinks at this

week’s meeting. Hopefully we will get another chance to experience this

outstanding fun event before the actual fund raiser next spring.
