Saint Dimitry Of Rostov

Saint Dmitri of Rostov is representativeof the strong Ukrainian influence uponthe Russian Orthodox Church at theturn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Heis separately credited as composer orcompiler of the first Russian opera, thelengthy Rostov Mysteries

Valentine's Day

This Valentine's Day issuehas a basket with roses, twopigeons and the inscription:"With holiday of lovers!"

Invention Of The Telephone

The stamp shows the progressachieved by the invention of thetelephone. On the left hand­side of thestamp we have the depiction of anindividual with the first telephonetalking across the world to a "modern"man with a cell phone.

Yuri Khmelnitsky

Yurii Khmelnytsky younger son of the famousUkrainian Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky andbrother of Tymofiy Khmelnytsky, was aZaporozhian Cossack political and militaryleader. Although he spent half of his adult life asa monk, he also was Hetman of Ukraine onseveral occasions in 1659­1660 and 1678­1681and starost of Hadiach.

Mykhailo Khanenko

Mykhailo Stepanovych Khanenko (ca. 1620 ­1680) was a Ukrainian Cossack military leader,and nominal hetman of Right­bank Ukraine from1669­1674 in rivalry with Petro Doroshenkoduring The Ruin.

Daniel of GaliciaDaniel was a King ofGalicia (Halych) (1205­1255), Peremyshl (1211),and Volodymyr (1212­1231). He was crowned bya papal archbishop inDorohochyn 1253 as thefirst King of Rus' (1253­1264). By his death in1264, Daniel had recon­structed and expanded theterritories held by his fath­er, held off the expansion­ist threats of Poland andHungary, minimized Mon­gol influence on WesternUkraine, and raised theeconomic and socialstandards of his domains.He was succeeded inGalicia by his son Lev.

Ship Building

The 2001 Ship Building stamps feature the two ships "ThreeSaints"(30k) and "Twelve Apostles"(20k).

This 30k stamp shows a rural scene ­with a young girl crossing a stream.This picture was created by OlyiaPynych ­ 8 years old.

This 40k stamp shows a young girlwith her mother at a store. This picturewas created by Dasha Chemberzhi ­ 6years old.

Water and Natural Resources

The 2001 Europa issue shows the bottom of the sea floor with its varietyof small fish and aquatic plants against a background of rocks.

Visit of Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II visited Ukraine fromJune 23­27th, 2001. The stamp showsthe picture of the Pope. On his left sideis the view is the view of St. Peter'sBasilica, Rome. On the right side is theview of the Pecherska Lavra, Kyiv.

Holy Trinity

This stamp honors the Feast of theHoly Trinity (Pentecost) also known asthe Green Holidays (Zeleni Sviata),since in Ukraine most doorways aredecorated with green branches on thisday.

Beekeeping

In ancient times, Ukraine was often referred to as a land of wax and honey. The souvenir sheet of 6 stamps depictsbeekeeping through the centuries. The first stamp shows a bee collecting pollen. The second stamp shows the variousaspects of Apiculture ­ the study of beekeeping. The third stamp shows the worker bee. The fourth stamp shows theQueen bee. The fifth stamp shows a unique beehive. Kiev PecherskLavra

One of the holiest sites inOrthodoxy is the KyivanCaves Monastery (KievPechersk Lavra), founded950 years ago. Since itsfoundation as the cavemonastery in 1051 theLavra has been a preemin­ent center of the EasternOrthodox Christianity inEastern Europe. Togetherwith the Saint SophiaCathedral, it is inscribed asa UNESCO World HeritageSite. The monastery com­plex is considered a separ­ate national historicsanctuary, the nationalstatus to which was gran­ted on March 13, 1996.The stamp shows the frontview of the Assumption ofthe Virgin Church, part ofthe monastery complex.

Red Book Fauna

The annual Red Book stamps always show endangered species inUkraine. The 2001 stamps feature the red kite, a type of raptor, andthe tiny jerboa, a three­toed rodent.

Zakarpattia Oblast

Situated in the Carpathian Mountains of westernUkraine, Zakarpattia Oblast is the only Ukrainianadministrative division which borders upon fourcountries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, andRomania. The Carpathian Mountains play amajor part in the oblast's economy, making theregion an important tourist and travel destinationhousing many ski and spa resorts.

Year Of DialogAmong Civilizations

The UN declared 2001 as theYear of Dialog AmongCivilizations, a conceptproposed by then IranianPresident MohammadKhatami. This stamp wasissued to commemorate this.

Dmytro Bortniansky

Dmytro Bortniansky was a UkrainianComposer. He is best known today forhis liturgical works. Bortnianskycomposed in many different musicalstyles, including choral compositions inFrench, Italian, Latin, German andChurch Slavonic.

Khanenko Museumof Arts

Khanenko Museum of Arthosts the largest collectionof foreign art in Ukraine.Shown on the souvenirsheet are three ancienticons from the sixth andseventh centuries. Thefirst stamp (20k) shows theicon "Mother Mary withChrist Child." The secondstamp (30k) shows theicon "John the Baptist."The third stamp (50k)shows the icon "SaintsSerhyi and Bacchus."

10th Anniversary ofIndependence

This sheet was issued tocelebrate the 10thanniversary of Ukrainianindependence. The stampshows legislators carryinga huge Ukrainian flag intothe Legislative Assembly(Verkhovna Rada) the dayUkraine declared it's inde­pendence from the SovietUnion.

The Black SeaThis souvenir sheetdisplays the diversity ofmarine life found in theBlack Sea. The souvenirsheet shows the differentfish, birds and plants foundin the Black Sea area.

7th National Philatelic Exhibition

The 7th. National Philatelic Exhibition was heldin Dnipropetrovsk. The stamp shows a view ofsome buildings in the city's skyline. In addition,there is a picture of a postman on horsebackannouncing the arrival of new mail.

St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas delivers presents tochildren on his feast day. This stampshows the saint sliding a gift under thepillow of a sleeping child

Happy New Year

This New Year issue showschildren in costumes dancingin a ring around a ChristmasTree.

Christmas

This Christmas stamp shows five costumedcarolers.

Kirovohrad Oblast

Between 1752 and 1764, the Kirovohrad Oblastwas a territory of Imperial Russia named NovaSerbia, and existed in this area with anadministrative seat in Novomyrhorod. The areaof the province is 24,600 km2, and its populationis 1.1 million.

Chernihiv Oblast

The Chernihiv Oblast was created as part of theUkrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on October15, 1932. It comprises a very importanthistorical region, noted as early as the KievanRus' period, when the cities of Chernihiv andNovhorod­Siverskyi were frequently mentioned.

Kharkiv Oblast

The oblast is the third most populous region ofUkraine, with a population of almost 3 million,more than half of whom live in the city ofKharkiv. While the Russian language is primarilyspoken in the cities of Kharkiv oblast, elsewherein the oblast most inhabitants speak Ukrainian.

Traditional Costumes

These stamps depict the native costumes worn by individuals in diffrent regions during specific folk cultural orreligious celebrations.The first area represented is Kyivshchyna (upper left). On the 20k stamp, ayoung girls in embroidered outfitscollecting green tree branches for the celebration of Pentecost. On the 50k stamp, a young couple dressed inwinter attire is going carolling in the village.The second area represented is Chernihivshchyna (upper right). On the 20k stamp, is a musical trio ­ "Troyiistimuzyky" entertaining a young girl. On the 50k stamp,is a young couple that have just got married leaving thechurch with lit candles.The third area represented is Poltavshchyna (lower). On the 20k stamp, there is a congregation of people by thewater's edge for the blessing of the water (Vodokhreshchia). On the 50k stamp, there are two young girls in theirembroidered outfits throwing into the water their flower wreath, participating in the ancient midsummer festival,Ivana Kupalo.
