Egypt where he met Muhammed Abduh. He was influenced by Abduh's philosophy and became one of his disciples. In 1898, Rida launched the journal al-Manar which remained until his death. He wrote Abduh's biography and many other works on different aspects of Islamic religion. He defended Shumayyil's views on religion. See Daghir, Masadir al-Dirasat, vol. 2, p. 395.

10. Farah Antun, was born in Tripoli, Lebanon. He left for Egypt in 1897 where he founded al-Jamiah, a periodical that was devoted to disseminating modern French thought. In 1906, he left for New York where he resumed the publication of al-Jamiah for a while, before he came back to Egypt and stayed until his death in 1922. While in New York, he refuted many aspects of Afghani's Refutation of Materialism, a point will be considered later in this study. and was forced to resign as a result of his commencement speech in 1882. His speech was reported in al-Muqtataf, 7 (1882), pp. 158--67. The translation of Lewis's article by N. Bawarshi can be found in N. Farag's thesis, Appendix IV, pp. 406-15.

16. While historians nowhere mentioned Shumayyil's knowledge of the German language, Sharabi indicated that he read a French translation of Büchner's work on Darwinism. This suggests that Shumayyil's translation of Büchner into Arabic was from the French version. H. Sharabi, Arab intellectuals, p. 69. n. 7.

17. The complete translation of the Origin into Arabic was completed in 1964 after the death of Mazhar. This translation will be discussed later in this study.

18. While no writer has yet mentioned this translation. Mazhar indicated its existence in al-Usur, 1930, p. 36. lt is conceivable that he never completed his translation and his work never appeared in Arabic.

19. This translation is the subject of discussion later in this study. 20. See n. 14 of this chapter.

By 1950, Musa admitted that he was mistaken in his convictions: 'I was under the inftuence of Nietzsehe, who called for the obliteration of the weak. Darwin's theory on the struggle for survival and survival of the fittest became my religious belief, and it supported Nietzsche's doctrine.' See S. It is interesting to mention that Chil's story could provide an analogy to Shumayyil's work in the Arab East. lt seems safe to indicate that in both cases an unorthodox publication was the main reason for the diffusion of Darwinism. Moreover. while each area of the refutation was based on religious grounds, in the Arab world there was no official or religious prohibition against reading Shumayyil's work, as happened in Spain.

1. Ibrahim al-Yaziji (1847-1906) son of Nasif al-Yaziji. a classical Arab writer. Ibrahim's writing was mainly on Arab history and language. He launched al-Diya in 1898, a periodical that battled certain aspects of Darwinism with Cheikho. He supervised the Arabic translation of the Old Testament for the Jesuits. Muhammad, editor of the periodical Al-Majalla al-Madrasiya (Scholastic Journal), was a Muslim who followed Hussein's approach. He published an artide entitled 'Al-Din wa al-Ulum al-Haditha' (Religion and Modern Science) which appeared in his periodical in 1903. Muhammad was surprised to find some Arab cirdes still of the opinion that most modern scientific subjects contradict religion and advance atheism among the population. These cirdes, he added, 'Make us think that these sciences were brought to our countries by foreigners for the aim of distorting religion and confusing uso On the contrary, careful understanding of modern science brings us doser to God.' Al-Majalla alMadrasiya, 1 (1903), pp. 161-63. To support his point, Muhammad provided verses from the Quran which encourage people to study science. In fact, he did not discourage the study of modern science. The author quoted verses that discuss natural sciences, astronomy, chemistry, medicine, physiology, natural history, plant science, geography, geology, statistics, history, mathematics, philosophy, political science, biology, law and even linguistics.

Note on Source Material

This study is based on periodicals and books written in Arabic during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The books are found for the most part in the Weiden er and H. Gibb libraries of Harvard University and in the Institute of Islamic Studies of McGill University.

Those who wrote on Darwinism were, then, identified with the help of the following sourees:

1. Y. A. Daghir Dictionnaire de la presse libanaise (1858-1924) (Beirut 1978) (In Arabic).

2. Y. A. Daghir Les Sources arabes de l'histoire de Liban (Beirut 1972) (In Arabic).

3. Y. A. Daghir Massadir al-Dirasah al-Adabiyah (Beirut 1956), 3 vols (Sources of Arab studies).

4. M. Hartmann The Arabic Press oj Egypt (London 1899). 5. J. Zaydan Tarikh Adab al-Lughah al Arabiyah (Cairo 1914), 4 vols

(History of Arabic Language Literature). 6. Faharis al-Mashriq al-Ammah (Beirut 1952) (Bibliographical Diction

ary). 7. Louis Cheikho Al-Adab al-Arabiyah fi al-Quarn al- Tasi Ashar (Beirut

1908), 2 vols (Arab Literature in the Nineteenth Century). 8. Yusuf Sarkis Mujam al-Matbuat al-Arabiyya wa al-Muarraba (Cairo

1928-31) (Bibliographical Dictionary on Arab Publications and Translations).

9. Faud Sarruf, ed. Fihris al-Muqtataj(Beirut 1967-68),3 vols (Bibliographical Dictionary).

10. J. Zaydan Tarajim Mashahir al-Sharq fi al-Qarn al-Tasi Ashar (Cairo 1911).

11. Khayr al-Din Zirkili al-Alam (Cairo 1954-59) (Bibliographical Dictionary).

12. Abdelghani Ahmed Bioud 3200 Revues et journaux arabes de 1800 il 1965, titres arabes et titres translitteres (Paris 1969).

13. Philip Tarazi Tarikh al-Sahaja al-Arabiya (Beirut 1914) 4 vols (History of Arabic Press).

Hartmann, Tarazi, Ahmed-Bioud and Daghir's Presse libanaise were excellent sources for selecting Arab scientific journals of our study period. These dictionaries not only provide the dates and the editors of journals, but also indicate whether the subject matter is scientific, literary, industrial, economic or political.

Note on Source Material 153

In selecting Arab science writers, I have been guided by Zaydan, Cheikho, Zirkili, Sarkis, and Daghir's Masadir al-Dirasat. Of particular importance are the works of Fuad Sarruf, who detailed Arab writings on Darwinism as they appeared in al-MuqtataJ, and Daghir, who provided a section devoted to Arab scientific writings on medicine, mathematics, agriculture, and natural knowledge. Al-Mashriq's bibliographical dictionary included a section on intellectual conflicts among Arab thinkers which was also helpful.

It was relatively easy to assemble the published work of Arab Christian writers. For the Muslim writers who were less known to the students of the Arab nineteenth century, such as Isfahani and Hussein, the material is not as easily available. Only sketches of their writings appeared in some conservative Arab journals like al-Mashriq. Since the work of these Muslims writers are not available in North American libraries, a special effort was made to locate imprints in the Middle East.
