1 NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to the South Salem Elementary School. We are a K-5 school serving the south portion of the Port Washington peninsula. This handbook has been a collaborative effort among administrators, teachers, and parents. It is my expectation that this handbook will be reviewed annually and the contents will be updated as needed. As we enter our 16th year at South Salem Elementary School, it is critical that you read through and discuss with your child/children the contents of this handbook. Some policies and procedures will be very familiar to you and others are unique to the Salem experience. While it does offer some very helpful information, there will be questions and concerns that will arise as the year progresses. As partners, we hope that you will contact the appropriate staff member if we can help in any way. I am looking forward to an exciting school year and the chance to work closely with you and your children. Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome to the South Salem Elementary School. We are a K-5 school serving the south portion of the Port Washington peninsula. TOP 10 THINGS SALEM PARENTS SHOULD KNOW

1. Support Salem School by getting involved in the Home School Association (HSA). The HSA has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to meet everyone’s interests and schedules. It is a great way to meet new people and to be more connected to the school.

2. Your child must arrive at school on time (by 8:45am at the latest).

3. All visitors to Salem MUST sign in and out at our front desk. It is required that all

visitors leave their driver’s license while in the building and carry a visitor pass with them at all times.

4. Teachers at Salem have email accounts. All email addresses follow the same

protocol: first initial of their first name followed by their whole last name @portnet.org ( i.e. [email protected]). Please be mindful that a teacher may not be able to access their email during the school day. Therefore, do not use email for urgent communications or those that require immediate action.

5. Please follow all dismissal procedures as are explained in the dismissal packet. No

phone calls for dismissal changes will be accepted unless it is an emergency. Please email these changes prior to 12pm at [email protected].

6. Lunch cards can be used to purchase lunch at Salem. To add money to your child’s

lunch card, simply send in a check made out to the Port Washington School District in your child’s backpack. A letter will be sent home when the balance on the card is running low. Lunch cards can also be used to purchase water and snack items such as cookies and pretzels.

7. Please call the Nurse’s office directly at 767-5410 when your child will be absent

and definitely no later than 9:00am. Sick children must remain at home until they are fever free or have not thrown up/had diarrhea for at least 24 hrs. Upon their return, you must submit a handwritten note explaining their absence for school records.

8. Parents need to wait in a single file on the car pick-up and drop-off line. Pull

forward when a spot opens on the curb and use curb-side doors ONLY for the children to enter and exit. Please always remain in your car while waiting for the children to be dismissed and remember, NYS law says that cars cannot idle on school property.

9. Please do not call the main office between 2:30pm-3:15pm as we are busy safely

dismissing your children.

10. Please refer to your Salem Student Directory for student addresses and phone numbers as well as all HSA Committee/Chair Person information. All communication regarding the HSA and all important school information is communicated by email. Please make sure the HSA has your email address.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL The official day begins at 8:45am and ends at 2:55pm. Due to individual bus schedules, the actual time of arrival and departure may vary. The Town of North Hempstead Traffic Department has asked that when staff and parents drive to the Newbury Rd. entrance they travel east on Wakefield Ave. and turn left onto Guilford Rd. This allows all cars to turn right onto Newbury Rd. and enter campus. This should minimize the congestion and make the intersection of Newbury Rd. and Guildford Rd. safer.

Arrival Procedures and Options Children may arrive at school anytime between 8:15am and 8:45am.and they will be supervised in the cafeteria. Any student who wishes to purchase breakfast may do so at this time.

• Students who qualify will arrive to school by bus. They will unload in front of the north wing. This area is for buses only and is not an option for parents.

• Students may be dropped off by car in one of two places. On the north side of the

campus, students may be dropped off and walk onto the school grounds by way of Cliff Way. Families may also drop off in front of the building by using the Newbury Road entrance. Once you have driven around the circle immediately in front of the building, you will pull your car into the forward most available spot along the curb. Your children may then unload on the curb side of your car only.

• Walkers may enter campus via Cliff Way or Newbury Rd. Children must use the

west sidewalk on Newbury Rd. if this is your choice.

• Children in grades 4 and 5 may ride their bicycles to school. Children must wear helmets and walk their bicycles once on school grounds. A bike rack is available for locking bicycles near the primary playground. Hoverboards and skateboards are not permitted in the building or on school grounds.

Dismissal Procedures and Options The dismissal of students begins daily at 2:55pm and generally follows this schedule:

• 2:55 All students who are walking from via the kindergarten door are released. • 2:57 All student who are walking via the Cliff Way door are released. • 2:58 All K-2 students who are car pick up and busser are walked to their

locations by their classroom teacher. • 3:00 All 3-5 student who are car pick up and busser are walked to their locations by

their classroom teacher.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURES (as of September 2017)

The Salem Compact Committee which is comprised of teachers, a paraprofessional, parents and me spent this past school year devising new dismissal procedures to ensure the safety for all our students. These will start on September 6, 2017. Below outlines these new procedures:

Walkers

The two different doors for your children to be dismissed from will remain the same (Kindergarten Door and Cliff Way Door). You can choose whether you want your child to walk home independently or be released to an adult. If you want your child to be released to an adult, you will indicate which adults will be taking your child on the dismissal form. They will be required to sign out your child and he/she will not be allowed to exit the building without an adult coming to the door.

Car-Pick Up

If parents choose car pick up for dismissal, your child must be picked up by car. Every Salem family will be assigned a transportation number and will be given two signs with this number (enclosed). The person picking up will need to have this with them at car-pick up. This needs to be placed in the upper right hand corner of the dashboard. All students will be waiting inside the building. As the aide sees the sign in the dashboard, he/she will radio into the school to get your child. They will come out based on the cars that are in front of the school.

Bus Dismissal

We made internal changes where the teacher now walks the entire class down to the bus dismissal waiting areas to increase safety and security. Other than that, bus dismissal remains the same.

Page 7: NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL - portnet.org · ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL The official day begins at 8:45am and ends at 2:55pm. Due to individual bus schedules, the actual time of

7

Daily Dismissal Changes

We ask that daily changes only be made in case of an emergency. All requests must be sent in by email to [email protected] no later than 12pm. Phone calls will no longer be accepted. You can indicate different dismissal choices by day on the dismissal form.

Early Pick-Up By Parent If you need to pick-up your child from school prior to regular dismissal time, please sign out the child from the Main Office. This should only be done prior to 2:30pm. Any child being dismissed early can only be dismissed to a parent in the Main Office. Students will not be dismissed to waiting cars. Parents need to park and enter. If you are sending someone in your place, it is required that you provide a note indicating your approval for this individual to act in your behalf. Bus Regulations Students in kindergarten through fifth grades are eligible for bus service based on distance from school as determined by the district. Bus students will exit from the north wing and will be escorted to the bus by educational assistants. Upon entering the bus, they are expected to sit with their grade level, buckle their seatbelt, and stay seated throughout the trip. It is expected that kindergarteners will sit in the front of the bus and the grade level will increase as you move toward the back of the bus. Climbing across the seats, opening the windows, playing with the emergency door and being generally disruptive endangers the safety of others and may result in suspension of bus service for the offender. Bus Rules

1. NO food on the bus. 2. Stay in your seat. 3. Be on time, the bus will leave as scheduled. 4. Wait in line on the curb for the bus. 5. Go on YOUR bus only. 6. Keep all parts of your body in the bus. 7. Talk softly. 8. Allow the bus driver to concentrate.

If there is any problem on the bus, it should be reported to the bus driver immediately and the principal if needed. If you have any questions about busing, you may call Ms. Robyn Allen, Coordinator of Transportation at 767-5032. Please be advised that district-wide bus regulations only permit children to ride the bus to which they are assigned. No deviation from this policy will be permitted.

It is most important to inform the classroom teacher, in writing, when there are changes in your child’s transportation routine. A note will help reduce anxiety and confusion for your child. In cases of emergency, where you need to call the school to indicate a change of transportation, calls should be made as early in the day as possible and never beyond 1pm. to ensure proper communication to the classroom teacher and the child. Parking Parking in the school lot is not permitted from 8:15am – 3:15pm except for the use of one of our “Visitor” spots that are clearly marked. This is for the parents who need to pick-up a child or drop something off. If you are visiting for a time period of longer than 15 minutes, you should find a legal spot on one of the neighboring streets. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY CARS PARK ON NEWBURY ROAD

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING AND DELAYED OPENINGS

During the winter months there is always the threat of snow and ice and the resulting harsh conditions that can make getting to and from school hazardous for both students and teachers. Please note the following procedures and policies that will be in effect in case of such emergencies. The main district telephone number (516-767-5000) will be programmed at approximately 6:00am with a message announcing a delayed opening or a school closing. The district website will post school closing by 6:00am. (http://www.portnet.k12.ny.us/). The district also activates a Connect-Ed message to all homes when school is closed. Class parents keep phone chains for use during emergencies. Please be sure to keep home and cell phone numbers current with class parents. Do not expect class phone chains to be activated during school closings or delayed openings. Delayed Opening Policy In order to avoid losing an entire day of school when the weather is inclement in the early morning, the School Board has adopted the following Delayed Opening Procedures. If a delayed opening is declared, parents should obtain information from the radio reports and from telephone chains. The fire department sirens will not sound. A delayed opening means that bus schedules will also be delayed one or two hours. For example, if the bus pick-up time is normally 7:54am, a one-hour delay will change that time to 8:54am, and a two-hour delay will change that time to 9:54am. When there is a delayed opening, all programs scheduled prior to the regular opening of school will be cancelled, e.g. breakfast program, morning clubs. A delayed school opening decision can be changed to a full-day closing decision if it is judged that the weather and road conditions will still be too hazardous despite the planned delay. Students attending non-public schools will be equally affected by a delayed opening decision. The School Closing Siren On days that the superintendent has determined schools should be closed, the fire department will sound its siren at 6:30am. All three sirens (Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Polish Hall and Manorhaven Park) will sound in unison and the cycle will be five blasts at four seconds each with a two second interval in between for a total of thirty seconds. This cycle is totally different than any other signal now used by the department and it will only be sounded once, at 6:30am to announce the closing of schools for that day. Public Announcements The following stations will carry information about Port Washington school closing and delayed openings: WCBS-880AM; WINS-1010AM; WBAB-1240AM; WALK-97.5FM and 1370AM; WBLI-l06FM; WKJY-98.3FM; and Channel 12 News. WOR-710AM will post the information on their website (http://www.wor710.com/).

Emergency Bus Stops When a snowstorm hits during the day, school buses sometimes have trouble getting to bus stops in some areas and do not try to go up certain streets. On days like that, the schools call parents whenever possible to notify them of the problem so that the children can be met at emergency bus stop locations. If there are any questions, parents should call the Salem School at 767-5400 for information.

WHO ARE OUR SPECIAL AREA TEACHERS AND WHAT DO THEY DO? Abby Duffy is our guidance counselor and she communicates with children about a wide range of topics. She leads small groups of students in conversations about bereavement, social skills and divorce. She also meets with children as needed to help them work out conflicts with classmates. Parents find her to be a helpful resource for addressing unique family circumstances. She also visits classrooms and conducts lessons with the teachers which are particular to their developmental needs. Kristen Cagnard & Jessica Guarino work closely with our English as a New Language (ENL) students and their families. They help them learn the language and the routines of being an elementary student. Ruth Diaz & Chantelle Persaud are our Math Resource teachers. They work with students who have difficulty with certain math concepts. They also co-teach lessons in the classroom. Stephen Connolly is our general music and chorus teacher. He also assists with a few band instrument lessons. John Akios is our band director and he teaches weekly lessons to those students who perform in the 4th and 5th grade band. SCHOOL POLICIES

MEDICAL POLICIES

Nurse’s Office The nurse’s office is where the student goes when:

1. He/she is not feeling well. 2. He/she has an accident at school. 3. He/she is to take medication during the school day. 4. His/her vision and hearing are tested annually.

The nurse will evaluate the condition and determine if your child should remain in school. If the nurse feels the student should go home, she will call the child’s parents or guardian to come to school and take him/her home. Your child should be picked up within a 30 minutes time frame. If you are unable to be to the school within 30 minutes, please make alternate arrangements so that he/she can be picked up within that time period. When children are ill, parents are asked to keep them at home until they are fever free for 24 hours, completely recovered and able to participate fully in all school routines. The nurse’s office cannot be used as an infirmary where children still recovering from illness are sent. Your child’s emergency contact information is on file in the nurse’s office. It is important that two telephone numbers be provided for emergency purposes and all contacts are up-to-date. Immunizations Children entering the Port Washington Public Schools are required by state law to have a physical examination by a New York State physician within 30 days of entrance. Effective January 2018, immunizations required are 2 MMR, 4-5 DTaP, 3-4 Polio, and 3 Hepatitis B doses, 2 dose series Chicken pox vaccine. Starting June 2018 in NYS, religious exemptions are no longer accepted. New Booster: Students born on or after 1/1/94 are required by NY State to have a Tdap (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) booster. This Booster must be completed by the first day of school provided the student is 11 yrs. old or they will not be allowed to remain in school as per NY State law. Allergies

Food allergies can be life threatening. The risk of accidental exposure to foods can be reduced in the school setting if schools work with students, parents, and physicians to minimize risks and provide a safe educational environment for food-allergic students.

Page 15: NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL - portnet.org · ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL The official day begins at 8:45am and ends at 2:55pm. Due to individual bus schedules, the actual time of

Family’s Responsibility • Notify the school of the child’s allergies.

• Work with the school team to develop a plan that accommodates the child’s needs throughout the school including in the classroom, in the cafeteria, in after-care programs, during school-sponsored activities, and on the school bus, as well as a Food Allergy Action Plan.

• Provide written medical documentation, instructions, and medications as directed by a physician, using the Food Allergy Action Plan as a guide. Include a photo of the child on written form.

• Provide properly labeled medications and replace medications after use or upon expiration.

• Educate the child in the self-management of their food allergy including:

o safe and unsafe foods

o strategies for avoiding exposure to unsafe foods

o symptoms of allergic reactions

o how and when to tell an adult they may be having an allergy-related problem

o how to read food labels (age appropriate)

o review policies/procedures with the school staff, the child’s physician, and the child (if age appropriate) after a reaction has occurred.

o provide emergency contact information.

School’s Responsibility

• Be knowledgeable about and follow applicable federal laws including ADA, IDEA, Section 504, and FERPA and any state laws or district policies that apply.

• Review the health records submitted by parents and physicians.

• Include food-allergic students in school activities. Students should not be excluded from school activities solely based on their food allergy.

• Identify a core team of, but not limited to, school nurse, teacher, principal, school food service and nutrition manager/director, and counselor (if available) to work with parents and the student (age appropriate) to establish a prevention plan. Changes to the prevention plan to promote food allergy management should be made with core team participation.

• Assure that all staff who interact with the student on a regular basis understands food allergy, can recognize symptoms, knows what to do in an emergency, and works with other school staff to eliminate the use of food allergens in the allergic student’s meals, educational tools, arts and crafts projects, or incentives.

Page 16: NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL - portnet.org · ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL The official day begins at 8:45am and ends at 2:55pm. Due to individual bus schedules, the actual time of

• Practice the Food Allergy Action Plans before an allergic reaction occurs to assure the efficiency/effectiveness of the plans.

• Coordinate with the school nurse to be sure medications are appropriately stored, and be sure that an emergency kit is available that contains a physician’s standing order for epinephrine. In states were regulations permit, medications are kept in an easily accessible secure location central to designated school personnel, not in locked cupboards or drawers. Students should be allowed to carry their own epinephrine, if age appropriate after approval from the student’s physician/clinic, parent and school nurse, and allowed by state or local regulations.

• Designate school personnel who are properly trained to administer medications in accordance with the State Nursing and Good Samaritan Laws governing the administration of emergency medications.

• Be prepared to handle a reaction and ensure that there is a staff member available who is properly trained to administer medications during the school day regardless of time or location.

• Review policies/prevention plan with the core team members, parents/guardians, student (age appropriate), and physician after a reaction has occurred.

• Work with the district transportation administrator to assure that school bus driver training includes symptom awareness and what to do if a reaction occurs.

• Recommend that all buses have communication devices in case of an emergency.

• Enforce a “no eating” policy on school buses with exceptions made only to accommodate special needs under federal or similar laws, or school district policy. Discuss appropriate management of food allergy with family.

• Discuss field trips with the family of the food-allergic child to decide appropriate strategies for managing the food allergy.

• Follow federal/state/district laws and regulations regarding sharing medical information about the student.

• Take threats or harassment against an allergic child seriously.

LATENESS

Children often find it difficult getting ready for school in the morning and parents can experience difficulties that leave them behind schedule. At Salem, we understand these early morning challenges and can accommodate an occasional lateness. When a child is frequently late to school, he/she always has to play catch-up. Having missed the morning announcements, the pledge, the general directions for the day from the teacher and the time allotted for children to ease into the rhythm of the day, the tardy child faces extra challenges in adjusting to the normal academic demands. This additional burden often causes problems for the child throughout the morning and places him/her at a learning disadvantage. It is very important for all children to experience the full school day. We enlist your help in seeing that your child, too, has this advantage.

HOMEWORK FOR ABSENT STUDENTS

Homework Policy for Absent Students Students and families are encouraged to get homework assignments by calling a classmate or having a friend or sibling stop by the classroom and then drop it off at your house. The main office can also be contacted if you intend to come to school to pick up homework, and it will be ready at the end of the day. Extended absences may require an email or phone call with the teacher to plan appropriately for your child. When students return to school, they will discuss with their teachers any work missed. Individual teachers will communicate their expectations regarding long term or on-going assignments. Please note that, according to District Policy, homework is not provided for illegal absences such as vacations.

HOMEWORK GUIDELINES

The purpose of homework is to reinforce and enhance the learning process and create a sense of independence, self-discipline and responsibility. Generally speaking, you may anticipate homework regularly. The assignment should reflect these time guidelines. These times do not always include reading at home. Grades K, 1 10-15 minutes daily Grades 2, 3 20-30 minutes daily Grades 4, 5 40-60 minutes daily

SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM VISITS

As a security measure, all doors, with the exception of the main entrance, will be closed between the hours of 8:45am and 2:55pm. Visitors must use the main entrance to the school and immediately sign in. The district has requested that all visitors present a photo ID to be left at the security desk. A visitor pass is issued that must be returned when signing out. Photo ID is then returned to the visitor. If you are going to visit a classroom for either a special activity or conference, please sign in at the front desk and receive a pass before entering the classroom area. Since our teachers have many responsibilities during the day, please arrange a mutually convenient time before coming to school. Since arrival and dismissal times are particularly demanding, we ask that you seek a conference at another time. When attending a special celebration or activity in a classroom, do not bring siblings who are attending Salem as it is an instructional disruption. If other classes are invited, it will be done so through teacher invitations. Please make sure that when you visit Salem for a special activity during the school day, that you attend that celebration. Visiting other children’s classrooms can also be a disruption and a security issue.

TELEPHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Students may not use the school phones except for an emergency and then only with staff permission. Electronic devices in general may not be brought to school. This includes but is not limited to cell phones, iPads, iPods, and V-tech or Apple Watches. Electronic books are on a case by case basis in the upper grades.

GIFT GIVING

In accordance with Board of Education policy, the presentation of gifts to district employees by students and/or their parents is not an encouraged practice. Dr. Ferrante encourages and welcomes letters to staff members expressing gratitude and appreciation.

COMPUTER USE AND ACCESS

Computers are powerful tools that can help children collect, organize, analyze and present information. Children use computers to observe, explore, experiment and construct in a format that integrates with the classroom instructional program. Computers are not a subject. Our technology program utilizes a full networked system comprised of classroom and desk top work stations, Chrome Book and iPad carts that contain open-ended tool software and hardware that is used to teach word processing, database, spreadsheets, graphic, multimedia, and telecommunications. The curriculum will spiral and basic applications are introduced to all students K-5, at appropriate grade levels and are reinforced through the elementary years. In addition to the classroom workstations and carts, a bank of networked computers is available in the library as well.

STUDENT INTERNET GUIDELINES

The Internet allows children to connect to people and computers all over the world. It may be used to send e-mail and search the World Wide Web for information about classroom studies. The following guidelines are designed to keep all children safe:

1. All e-mail will be respectful and polite. 2. No one will give out any personal information (full name, address, telephone

numbers, etc.) to anyone on the Internet 3. The Internet will only be used for school projects. 4. Any material that is offensive will be immediately reported to a teacher. 5. The Internet will be used only when there is a teacher in the room.

PROPER CLOTHING

All children should come to school dressed appropriately for an educational setting and according to the weather so that they may participate in all activities including outside play. Hats, gloves, and jackets are requested for days when the weather is cold. Please be sure that jackets and hats are free of strings and cords that can catch on playground equipment and lead to injury. Students will not be permitted to wear hats, open-heeled shoes, or sneakers with wheels in the sole during the school day.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND PROGRAM ATTIRE

For the health and safety of the children involved, as well as to meet the legal responsibilities of our school district, we offer the following:

1. When participating in physical education activities at the elementary school level, proper and appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn by the student. Appropriate clothing could include any one of the following choices or combinations:

a. Shorts, sweat socks, and T-shirt. b. Sweat suit or warm-up suit. c. Comfortable play clothes appropriate for the level and/or activity. (No belt

loops, zippers, or pockets).

2. Footwear must be appropriate for the activity, and safe for the student and those students around him/her. Proper footwear consists of sneakers which lace fully, or are secured by velcro. Slip on sneakers and/or cleats, sandals, and snow boots should not be worn, nor should any sneakers with a heel.

3. Jewelry should not be worn during physical education activities. Students are

discouraged from wearing jewelry to school on days when they are scheduled for physical education.

NOTE: The physical educator is responsible for determining the appropriateness of

the clothing and footwear within the context of the above statements.

SOUTH SALEM HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION (HSA) The South Salem Home and School Association works with the school in a cooperative effort to continually enhance the quality of education for all our children. Education extends beyond the classroom through meetings, committees and programs sponsored by the HSA. Many activities in our school are organized and staffed by HSA volunteers so feel free to participate. Check the district calendar and the HSA newsletter and website for a listing of upcoming HSA meetings and activities. https://www.salemhsa.org/

HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION CHANNELS

This policy is designed to foster communication between home and school. Its aim is to encourage an atmosphere of open and honest exchange and contribute to a cooperative and mutually supportive school environment for the benefit of the Salem children. The following are the recommended sequence of steps: Step 1: A brief telephone conference between parent and teacher is frequently the only

informal interaction necessary to allay parental concerns and resolve issues. For questions and concerns centering on student experiences in school but outside the classroom, the principal can be contacted.

Step 2: A face-to-face conference between parent and teacher is recommended if

either party feels that the telephone exchange has not resolved the issue. Step 3: For any issue that cannot be resolved between the parent and teacher, the next

step would be a conference with the teacher, parent and principal. Step 4: If a parent is not completely satisfied with the outcome of the conference

involving the teacher and principal, the parent should outline his/her concerns and the details of the unresolved issues to the principal. The principal will respond in writing to the parent, articulating the school’s position on the issues raised by the parent.

Step 5: Upon receipt of the principal’s response, any parent who remains dissatisfied

with the school’s effort to resolve the open issues may refer his/her concerns to the Superintendent’s office, either by phone or in writing.

CLASS PLACEMENT

The process of placing children in particular classes is to establish environments in which children may be productive and successful learners. There are many factors that go into this decision-making process such as general ability, gender, learning style, special identification (e.g. ELL, classified, etc.), and compatibility with other students. Classroom teachers carefully consider the academic and social needs of children as they form classes for the coming year. Our process involves the teachers of a particular grade level meeting with the principal, as a group, to find the best placement mix. In addition, the school psychologist, guidance counselors, resource room teachers, speech and language teachers, reading teachers, and special area teachers will provide key assistance. After classes are formed, classroom teachers from the receiving grade will also meet with the principal to review their assignments and rosters for the coming year. Throughout the school year parents have the opportunity to share their child’s strengths and needs with his/her current teacher through conferences and other means. Rest assured this vital information is included in our discussion. Request for specific teachers cannot be entertained, and the principal asks you not to approach your current classroom teacher to discuss such placements. You may contact the principal if you have concerns regarding your child’s placement due to:

a) prior experience with a potential teacher and your child or his/her sibling, or

b) if you have a personal, family, or business relationship with a potential teacher.

The principal will assume responsibility for all final decisions regarding your child’s placement. This description of the placement process will enable us to work together in an open and fair way to serve the best interest of your child. The collective wisdom and judgment of the Salem family will lead to sound decision-making and a successful educational environment in September.

DIGNITY ACT IN PRACTICE

It is the responsibility of each person to help make a safe and welcoming place where everyone feels comfortable. We treat each other with respect and kindness. We don’t make fun of or exclude people for how they look, what they think or believe, or how they feel. We accept and celebrate both the ways in which we are the same and the ways in which we are different, and we learn from each other. Anyone who is made to feel frightened, or embarrassed, or uncomfortable anywhere in the school – classroom, playground, lunchroom, bathroom, hallway, or on the bus, or through the use of the computer or cellphone is able to get help by speaking to an adult-teacher, counselor, school nurse, principal, aide, bus driver or parent. Anyone who hears, sees, or knows of a friend in trouble, is also able to get help from an adult. As members of the school community, we all need to stand up for each other to be upstanders instead of bystanders.
