Note for engaging Technical Institutes
Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH), also called parasitic worms are a significant public health concern for India. Around 68% children of 1-14 years of age (22 crore) are estimated to be at risk of parasitic intestinal worm infestation. Evidence shows detrimental impact of STH infestation on physical growth, anemia, under nutrition and cognitive development as well as poor attendance at school. Based on national level STH mapping, and WHO treatment guidelines, the GoI has issued a notification to states recommending the appropriate treatment frequency based on prevalence data. Karnataka is required to conduct biannual deworming due to high prevalence (49%). Considering the high prevalence, it is crucial that all children aged 1-19 years are dewormed on NDD. A consistent, high quality and high coverage NDD program will contribute in reducing the STH (worm) prevalence and slow reinfection rates.
The NDD program in the state is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Health and Family Welfare, Public Instruction, Pre-University Education and Women and Child Development with technical assistance from Evidence Action. The last NDD round was conducted in all the schools (government and private) and anganwadis across the state on February 12, 2018 and has dewormed 1.47 crore children. The state has started planning to implement next round of NDD on August 10, 2018.
The state is targeting 1.97 crore children aged 1- 19 years for NDD Aug 2018 round. Of total targeted children, 20% (40.8 lacs) are under OOS category which also includes children enrolled in technical institutes along with other categories (migrant children, child labor, OOSC etc.) It is important to focus on coverage of these children to achieve high coverage, state has to build strategy for reaching out to technical institutes. The benefits of deworming will be limited in those who have received the drug, if there are other children who continue to harbor the STH eggs and the transmission cycle will continue.
The role of technical institutes in NDD program is very critical. You are requested to take following actions to support the NDD program:
1. The technical institutes should ensure their participation in the NDD Block level trainings. To confirm upon the dates of training please reach out to your respective Taluk Health Officers (THO) list attached as annexure 1.
2. Ensure to receive the drugs (albendazole 400 mg tablets) as per the number of children aged 17- 19 years enrolled in your institute from your respective THO.
3. To generate awareness and dissemination of information and for training on NDD program, please collect the IEC and training material (including reporting format) material from your respective THO.
4. Engage children from your institutes to spread awareness about NDD among children and parents through use of resources specifically developed NDD. Additionally, leverage platform of WhatsApp, SMS and emails for sharing/ exchanging key messages around NDD with children and parents.
5. For every child receiving a tablet, a single tick mark (√) on NDD (August 10) should be marked next to the name of the child in the attendance register. Double tick marks (√√) to be marked next to the names of children administered drug on mop-up day (August 17) in their attendance register.
6. Colleges must have emergency helpline numbers (104) and contact numbers of nearest THO/ANM. Please ensure that only Severe Adverse Events (SAE) are reported.
7. Institutes to ensure availability of clean drinking water on NDD and mop-up day.
8. Ensure timely reporting of NDD coverage in the prescribed reporting form to your THO.
