I’m here to talk to you about Queensland’s electricity network.
As we know Electricity is an essential service that keeps the lights on, society moving and our economy growing…but what else do you know?
• We as Queenslanders own five Electricity companies Energex, Ergon, Powerlink, Stanwell and CS Energy;
• These five companies contributed over half a billion dollars to Queensland’s economy last year, (to your schools, hospitals & roads);
• These companies employ more than 8,500 workers including 600 apprentices.
Recently the State Government has made comments about selling these assets. What would this mean for your family, your business and Queensland’s future?
I’m Tony Barry, you might remember me from movies such as; Australia, Scales of Justice and Paper Giants or for my Kiwi cousins, Good Bye Pork Pie and Home for Christmas. I’ve also been in TV shows like All Saints, Blue Heelers, Matlock Police and many more.

A little known fact is that there are only two states in Australia with fully privatised electricity networks. How do they stack up against Queensland’s 100% public owned network?
The Cyclone YASI experience - Public asset responding to public need.
The Black Saturday Bushfires - Private failure leads to public pain in Victoria
Response times and employee commitment to power restoration following YASI were applauded by the community, the government and the companies. The success was due in no small part to the fact that state owned electricity supplier Ergon Energy has depots in many local communities and its workers are actively involved in their communities. Apart from the clean-up it also assisted hard hit consumers through flexible billing and other initiatives.
The Black Saturday bushfires raged through Victoria on Saturday, February 7, 2009, killing 173 people, injuring 414 and destroying 2030 homes. The Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission found that five of the Black Saturday bushfires including the Kilmore East and Murrindindi blazes that claimed 159 lives were caused by electricity asset failures linked to lack of maintenance and upkeep.
We are told privatised power is cheaper, it simply isn’t! www.not4sale.org.au/get-facts

“As a parent, I can’t afford the increased cost of electricity that inevitably comes with privatisation. I’m involved with the NOT4SALE campaign, because we all deserve the right to understand how the privatisation of electricity will affect us and our families.”
