PRESENTING THE #1 STRAIGHT- AHEAD JAZZ LINEUP IN THE WORLD

PIANO/ORGAN We have mentioned Shelly Berg, Chucho Valdes and Joey Alexander, but The Jazz Cruise ’19 will also feature more amazing players, including Joey DeFrancesco (organ), Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap (with his trio of Kenny Washington and Peter Washington), Bill Cunliffe, Emmet Cohen, Tamir Hendelman, Edward Simon and others.

MORE THAN A CRUISE. THE JAZZ CRUISE IS A LEGEND.Since 2001, The Jazz Cruise has presented the finest in “straight ahead” jazz. Over time, as other jazz festivals and events morph into crossover music events, The Jazz Cruise remains dedicated to “straight ahead” jazz, in the process becoming the most important event of its kind in the world, whether on land or at sea. That The Jazz Cruise takes place at sea adds to the magic and majesty of the event as the ship becomes the crucible in which more than 100 top jazz musicians share the bandstand in unique combinations, pairings and performances, making The Jazz Cruise “the place” for “straight ahead” jazz.

FESTIVAL AT SEA Each show, each pairing and each event on The Jazz Cruise is carefully designed to create special moments for the musicians and vocalists to share with the guests. At various times, guests have 3, 4 or even 5 different venues to visit at a time. With each musician performing multiple times during the week, a well-planned schedule will allow the guest to take in hours and hours of their favorite performers and still have time to enjoy new events and combinations. In all, there are more than 225 hours of music on The Jazz Cruise.

AT THE HELM The Jazz Cruise is produced by Entertainment Cruise Productions (ECP), the World Leader in Live Entertainment at Sea, having created and completed more than 70 full ship charter cruises over the years. While ECP handles the logistics of The Jazz Cruise, the programming has been placed in the hands of Shelly Berg (Music Director) and John Clayton (Big Band Director), two of the most respected men in the world of jazz as well as providing our guests with the ultimate jazz experience. While Shelly oversees scheduling and creating our shows, John curates and directs Anita Berry’s Big Band (see below).

• Ken Peplowski (Reeds) puts together the Opening Show, a jazz sampler of the stars of the cruise who gather on the first night to give you a taste of everything that is in store for you during the course of the week. • For many years now Wycliffe Gordon (Trombone)

has served as the leader of The Gospel Hour, a stunning show held on the first morning at sea which features many musicians playing “gospel according to jazz” music for all to enjoy. This inspirational show is a highlight of the cruise.

• Jazz and comedy have been paired forever and

The Jazz Cruise features Alonzo Bodden, its comic-in-residence. Hilariously funny, he

also loves the music and the musicians.

• Guitarist, vocalist and raconteur John Pizzarelli will host several special events this year as well as be a prime late-night entertainer in our special Birdland at Sea venue.

• Interviews during the cruise are a significant element of the interactive aspect of The Jazz Cruise experience. Famed jazz

historian and radio host Dick Golden conducts the most entertaining

interviews in the genre.

THE BANDS In addition to its great trios and quartets, The Jazz Cruise features its own big band and several established performing group. Anita Berry’s Big Band is a unique big band comprised of musicians who lead their own groups but gather once a year for these performances. Under the guidance of John Clayton, the band features our vocalists and other musicians during their shows. And, we are thrilled to present four great bands, SFJAZZ Collective, Clayton Brothers Quintet, Tommy Igoe Sextet and Brecker Band. Each unit is distinctive and exciting and features top notch jazz musicians.

SPECIAL PEOPLE FOR SPECIAL EVENTS Throughout the cruise, there are special events that are produced and hosted by some of our amazing musicians.

VOCALISTS The Jazz Cruise always has presented top vocalists. That tradition continues this year with Eliane Elias, Cyrille Aimée, Steve Tyrell,

Mary Stallings, Niki Haris and our exciting newcomer, Veronica Swift, not to mention our beloved John Pizzarelli and Wycliffe Gordon whose vocals append their instrumental performances.

“The environment of The Jazz Cruise is like no other festival or concert that I know. For 7 days and 7 nights, the best jazz musicians in the world gather to share the bandstand with each other and to entertain and excite the amazing guests. There is no other week in “straight ahead” jazz like The Jazz Cruise.” —Shelly Berg on The Jazz Cruise

“I have the honor of selecting the music and conducting a big band comprised entirely of all stars, musicians who are leaders of groups in their own right. We come together once a year, practice like crazy on the ship and the rest is magic…and a lot of fun.” —John Clayton on Anita Berry’s Big Band
